Best hospital I’ve ever been treated at, from the time I was first admitted (18) to most recently dude to a relapse (24) now . It was nice seeing familiar faces Luis, and Barbara, Chris, Bo, all true hero’s, legends of Sharp Mesa Vista! I hope to someday go back to work as a volunteer is my dream, hopefully someday after I’ve finished my schooling, and who knows maybe even work there! This is my two cents on SMV, I love you guys ! Thank you for everything you’ve done for SD!

As a patient, multiple times, I, with hopefully not too shameful a plug, do declare this place to be the best hospital I myself have ever been to. Special, extra special thanks to Neda, and male and female other various individuals like Sarah, and so many others. Who am I to even speak their praise? Not in AA that’s for sure....;) . That said, it is an example of a properly run machine, with all the moving pieces harmonizing into multidimensional symphony; an concerta ? Am I saying that right? Dr. Jafar, whom I hope I can keep in touch with at the cog program and continue to chat. Very deep but also able to meet at place of patient. Rare gem of a man. Can think outside box . Ya know? All of east wing two, all my love xoxo

My daughter was at Sharp Mesa Vista for the 7 and 14 day program for attempting suicide. Dr. Kosmach is literally a life saver. He is understanding, funny, and works with the patient. A refreshing thing to see. Both the programs taught my daughter new tools and ways to cope when she feels low. We did the family days at Sharp and we learned a lot as a family. Its been over a year now and my daughter is stable, doesnt have anymore self harm or suicidal thoughts. Sharp put us on the right path. My daughter and our family are still doing the work, and we have learned that there is no finish line, there is no fixing, or quick fix. We do the work daily and we couldnt be more thankful, relieved, and grateful. Its amazing how something so negative turned into something so positive.

This is a very well kept, clean, and organized facility. I was very impressed with it. They have a lot of visiting hours with the patients which is great for families and friends to be involved, and all the staff that I encountered were extremely friendly. The food is not bad, pretty average for a hospital. The only downside seems to be common in hospitals like this which is that doctors do not seem to be very involved other than popping in and adjusting medication. This can be a little frustrating at times but generally the RNs on duty can answer any and all questions.

Beds were comfortable to sleep in (with readily available ear plugs). Blankets do feel like towels but they’re warm and comfortable. Food is hit or miss; picky eaters might have trouble, but I never went hungry. Staff is very friendly and supportive. Support staff like social workers really make sure you’ve got a good plan before you leave. Recreation therapists were very friendly and fun and encouraging. The worst part is honestly being bored between therapy sessions, but they have cable tv and some activities like coloring and word puzzles always available.

One thing I can say about this place is that the majority of the people working were nice and kind. That being said the level of treatment was poor. They only have 2-3, 30 minutes groups a day, sometimes they seemed unsure about what they were even teaching. About half the nurses werent aware on how to help somebody when having severe anxiety besides saying let the medication do its work and you just need to calm down somehow, but offered little to no way on how to do that or didnt help us to do it. Besides the other reasons I was here, they never even touched on my eating disorder. Not once did they ask about it or offer therapy or ways to cope with my ED. I know hospitals arent the place to recieve all the treatment and help you need, but more definitely be done.

I remember in 1997 I was 11 years old going on 12. And I remember how good they was to me. They just wanted to help me get by in life before anything that happene in the future. So I am proud to say I literally came along way in life. So I definitely say that this was a really great facility to get treatment to definitely get better without holding any negative emotions. Its a place to redeem yourself for the better. Now I am 33 years old and I am doing much better than before. I been training martial arts for 16 years now. I am also a devoted father of one boy. And I am a successful massage therapist at a high end hotel spa. I really thank you so much for giving me the confidence for definitely moving forward in life. Please never feel a shame that you have a problem because they will help you. And you will be free of issues.

I have been to Sharp Mesa Vista inpatient and outpatient programs and it is the best treatment Ive received. You have to be youre own advocate and tell them what you need but once they know they help you. They treat you like an individual and respect your decision to either take medication or not. They explained to me the options I had and didnt bother me that I chose to not take any prescriptions which I appreciated. Im in cognitive group there outpatient now and it took two weeks to get used to it. Theyve helped me a lot. My therapist has found resources for me and my psychiatrist has helped with documents that I need for my medical leave claim. A psychiatric hospital is not exactly where anyone wants to be but sometimes you need it. It is hard to adjust and hard to be around others who have more extreme symptoms than you do but its worth it.If youre reading this I hope you know that wherever you decide to seek treatment just know its okay to ask for help. No ones judging you as much as you judge yourself and I hope you get through this. Its difficult to be in a position in life where youre considering mental health treatment but it means youre willing to heal and thats awesome.

I recently went to this place. In the inpatient program for adolescents. I must say a few things about this place. First of all the beds are terrible. The blankets are like towels. (My roommate and I stayed up all night the first night joking about it actually.) Second of all, the food (most of it anyway) is garbage. There were a few things on the menu that werent bad though like the pizza and the sausage dog. So if you go here, always get those 2 things on the menu. But there are positives to this place as well. Most of the staff are very friendly and are there only to positively encourage you and get you the proper help. But if only they improved on the living quarters...

I was originally very happy with this place. They used to help me out a lot. Then one day I decided to get off of my opiate meds through a rehab clinic (Pacific Bay Recovery-- crooked and awful, do NOT go there) and that facility took me off of my mood stabilizer and anxiety medication. I asked to be put back on them at SMV but Dr. Moyer said no and laughed. Im absolutely not privy to whats funny about that. I left as soon as possible and quickly found a new doctor. Turns out Dr. Moyer, who Id been seeing for years, had misdiagnosed me. Im Bipolar II, not simply depressed. I saw several other psychiatrists until I found my current one and they all diagnosed me with Bipolar II as well. Im on Lamictal and Xanax XR among other things now and Im much more functional than Ive been in a very long time. Also, on my first day during that visit post-rehab, Dr. Moyer was called to come see me as soon as possible because my symptoms were very bad. I cried a lot because I was terrified and didnt know why and the nurses told me that Id have to deal with it until he came. I asked if they would give me a B-52 (a strong sedative for quickly calming patients) if I began acting violently but they said we cant give you medication without your consent. Bulls**t. I was put on a 5150 once in a Sharp facility and they wasted no time restraining and sticking the guy across the hall, who had yelled and thrown a tray, with a B-52. They absolutely did not get his consent and nothing says they have to in those situations. Dr. Moyer eventually came near noon and gave me my basic medication which was nearly 24 hours overdue. The next day, however, he came extremely early. I asked him why he hadnt come early the day before when he was paged and he literally said oh, I have to leave pretty soon so I came in early. Im taking my kids on an Easter egg hunt. Youre WHAT?! You ignored me yesterday when I had NO medication but today you come at 7am because you have to go appease kids you dont even have custody of?! (Hes very openly divorced and depressed about it). I get that doctors need family time and sleep and all of those basic needs but hes dealing with mental health patients and thats not exactly something they care about. They care about relief and help in this trying time, not Easter egg hunts.Another puzzling thing is they will let you read and use portable DVD players but they wont let you have portable video games because it will distract from group meetings. And those other things dont? Also, Ive been there enough times that I could definitely lead these meetings myself. You could go there for a one week stint and be able to do this. Im not slow and neither are most of the patients there so we dont need to be talked down to. And if you dont go to the meetings you can be labeled as non-compliant and kept in the hospital longer.Lastly, my friend Terry is dead. She died a couple of years ago, another victim of suicide. She was vibrant, fun, and very special to a lot of people. The nurses all knew shed died but had to talk about it in hushed tones and tell me to say nothing. She was at SMV almost every time I was and she was always in the same condition with the same medications. Like me, I believe she was misdiagnosed which lead to her finally succeeding in a suicide attempt. Shed successfully pulled one off at a mental hospital (maybe SMV, maybe not since she never told me) but was revived after 10 minutes and was in a coma for two weeks. She was also likely the reason the doors are the way they are now because she hung herself there with her sheets but was found minutes before she successfully finished herself off. But shes dead now. And I at least partially blame SMV.

Well i just tried to get my pre teen mental health care & was ding by Aurora Behavioral Health, Childrens CAPS & Sharp Mesa Vista mental health in San Diego for being privileged for Having Blue Shield HMO. because she is not homeless, foster child & unwilling to take medication she does not meet criteria as they discharge us they said but if she thinks she is going to harm herself bring her back. According to Dr. Patel @ Aurora Behavioral health the Social Worker Mayra Bel has final say about what happens to my kid so im new to mental health my daughter was mentally dumped out. According to Mayra my kid was accepted by a residential & i should drive her immediately to the facility. I ended up at project oz which is a satelite or no profit YMCA program. What i did not understand at that moment Mayra the Social worker at Behavioral health was medically dumping my kid out & i was volunteering takimg her out to a YMCA residential based on me paying, etc. They dont take insurance. It was a volunteer program & it was up to me financially & if i agreed to drive up & take days off work for my kid couslimg sessions. According to blue shield Hmo mental legal department, Aurora Behavioral health never returned their phone call. According to Dr. Patel my Blue shileld HMO is a pain. According to Dr. Hal @ Childrens CAPS Christina the Social workers degree overwrites his Medical liscense & Christina has final say & cannot go to a residential. So the homeless, foster kids have priority but only because they dont know better & are willing to be in an unclean facility & take medication. What happened to couseling? My concern is medication to mental health homelessness is priority what happens when they go back on the streets with no medication & no counseling tools to deal with the real issues of assault, abuse neglect etc. Is Mental health & medication 1 for treatment is this a billing issues or kick back from pharmaceutical to physicians, social workers & mental facilities. My other issue is if you make an appointment for knee ortho they ask you at Childrens mental health, self harm questions they dont treat your knee because you tested positive for mental health & thats priority, Childrens hold the kid for 72 hold 51/50 the kid refuses treatment because they are looking for counseling this dings them as they dont meet criteria for mental health treatment. CAPS at Children Rob the RN was set to discharge my kid bevausr i arrived earky since i live 2.5 hours away from San Diego. I asked what i had to sign Rob the RN said nothing because i was taking my kid voluntary, i asked if they were going to document as me taking my kid Against Medical advice, AMA according to ROB its just voluntary. According to ROB RN, Dr. Hal was not promary doctor for CAPS Mental treatment so why was Christina the social worker & dr. Hal in charge of diagnossing my kid as does not meet criteria. My kid said they did not offer couseling, they offer she treat with someone in her area. kick the kid back home for parents with no mental health degree to deal with. I will make under appointment for my my kids knee appointment & my kid will get tied into the same systems going around in circles with no treatment for my kids knee because the kid will answer the same depressed questions & is a potential self harm. If your Mental treatment is worthless in San Diego with more resources what do you think its like 2.5 hours in the imperial valley with less resources. If as a parent working to have insurance dings us as privileged then give us all a fair chance in the mental health services & give all U.S. citizens who work free Medi-Cal. I ask was anthony bourdain, robin williams violent did they meet criteria for mental health services, part of privileged society & they still killed themselves. Not to tale from the RN, technicians who really did help the kids. To them thank you.

My mother was recently released from the behavioral unit for seniors. She has multiple issues including anxiety, depression, early stages of dementia and an addiction to pain medicine. Dr. Khalafian is an exceptional psychiatrist! He is kind compassionate and very sensitive to the patients needs yet he also understands the pharmacological agents that are necessary to bring the chemistry of the brain back into a more balanced approach. He called me at least twice to inform me on my mothers condition and prognosis. He listened to my concerns as her son. He and the nursing staff were well on top of most of the issues that my mother faced, both physical and mental. They were very attentive to her needs and yet realistic to what they could achieve as goals. Also, my mothers social worker Tracy was a very efficient at setting up the necessary discharge contacts to ensure that my mother would receive further treatment. The issues of mental health are complex and difficult at times but Sharp Mesa Vista has done an exceptional job and continues to have a deep sense of commitment to its patients. My only concern is the limited number of beds available at a given time for such a large and growing need in our community.

Sharp Mesa Vista is an excellent facility for both detox and inpatient mental health services. They also have an excellent outpatient program too. I was reluctant to seek help for my issues because of punishing experiences at other facilities, particularly API in La Mesa, which is best avoided if your insurance provides alternatives. Mesa Vista is a comfortable, clean and spacious facility with top notch staff and excellent food. The staff consists of well educated professionals with advanced degrees. API by contrast, has a couple of doctors and nurses but, the day to day running of the facilities is done by certified Mental Health Workers, which is probably a 600 hour certificate program. My only complaint with Sharp is this....While I was in detox, a social worker met with my girlfriend and advised her (more or less) to terminate our relationship. This is not something you do to somebody on his 3rd day in detox!!! She accepted his advice, returned to my room and broke the news to me at a time I was least able to cope with it. The end result is that I left detox early and continued with a relapse could very well have been fatal. Another thing worth mentioning is that recovery is a process, not an event. People in recovery often experience several failed attempts to get things right, which often entails multiple detox/hospitalization stays. Sharp seems to unofficially put a cap on the number of times you can utilize their facility, even if your insurance agrees to pay for your stay. I was in their outpatient and did very well, achieving multiple months of sobriety between relapses. Despite this, the last time I attempted to enroll in their outpatient program I was given the runaround big time. I always attended in the afternoons in the past, now they suggested I go at night, when it was least convenient. Then, when I reluctantly agreed to attend the night program at Mesa Vista, I was referred instead to their satellite program across town. Perhaps they didnt want me to bump into the unethical social worker who dispensed the near fatal advice. I hope you consider this to be a balanced and fair review.

TRAUMATIZING. HORRIBLE. FRIGHTENING. INCOMPETENT. DO NOT PUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IN THE CARE OF THESE LUNATIC EGOMANIACS. Unbelievable dissapointment. The DBT program sounds great, and it is -- until you find out that the doctor in charge of it is less competent and more egomaniacal than the average inpatient. Am looking into a lawsuit against this person. She seemed nice and competent at first; then suddenly she flipped out and gave me this sudden diagnosis that was utterly the oppositte of every other medical professional Id seen. I was in severe clinical depression, exhausted after 2 hours of hellish rush-hour traffice to get there & only 7 hours sleep, and she said Im hypomanic, impulsive, and had racing thoughts. Which is hilariously inaccurate, as my issues are the exact oppositte of these, as has been noted by about 20 other medical professionals over the last 2 decades. When I patiently asked her why she thought these things, she could not substantiate even one of them. This struck me as insane. She also mentioned that my grooming wasnt adequate, in front of a few other people (thanks!), even though this is more a symptom of Depression than Hypomania, AND was totally untrue according to others I talked to later, AND she herself has long straggly unkempt hair like Cousin It from the Addams Family! Finally, she had this hostile, aggressive, stern attitude the entire time -- as if Id done something terribly wrong, completely ignoring the fact that I had done NOTHING wrong, and had worked my ASS off to get to the program that morning. Time to write her supervisors & NAMI, and Lawyer Up.
