Stereo Unlimited is an institution in San Diego. I went in to get a high-end stereo system for my son and I had a specific budget that was probably bigger than the average person— but still not tremendously high. I found Bruce —the owner— and all his workers to be incredibly personable. After two or three visits, you are like family! I love the atmosphere-- You walk in to a room full of McIntosh amplifiers and real vinyl albums spinning. Ever hear of Marantz? They have a ton of stuff. There are relics, little sculptures of jazz musicians, and dream library like showrooms that make you feel like you are back in the 1970s listening to the good stuff. Its a huge space! Spacious.. They have a full vinyl record store which is something many of us have not seen since the 1970s or 80s. The staff will absolutely work with you! they don’t want you to make a mistake —they want you to get the best system possible which is upgradable. MUST SEE BUSINESS!
These guys are a class act. Always willing to give advice and provide support even though you may not be buying something from them that day. They consistently offer excellent customer service and their employees have a deep knowledge of their products. If you want intelligent, thoughtful, and honest advice and support for all of your stereo needs look no further than Stereo Unlimited.
What a great experience! Our band came into Stereo Unlimited to listen to a test pressing of our new recording. We were welcomed by Bruce and treated to listening to our album on a super high-end stereo. When first heard, many people might have discounted our album as noise, but Bruce was so cool and open-minded that we were blown away. His demo systems are absolutely incredible. What ensued while listening to our record was an eye-opening exchange of ideas, and sharing of vinyl favorites and recommendations. This whole experience could easily have went the other way with a salesperson rolling their eyes and discounting our efforts, but that was not the case, and we appreciate the hospitality.Thank you Bruce--You are a solid dude. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend Stereo Unlimited for quality stereo equipment and shopping for vinyl.
Better deals than anything online! Huge collection of high quality audio/visual equipment. Multiple listening rooms and helpful staff.
Im new to the area and was disappointed with the selection of speakers at another high end stereo store I went to and so was subsequently blown away by the incredible selection here. Very knowledgeable and helpful staff too, Great audiophile discovery!
Im sitting now listening to my audiophile music system. I have so much appreciation for stereo unlimited. I couldnt quite get my system right so I went back into the store . I originally bought a Rogue Audio stereo amplifier from them . I brought my speakers in and they tested them and gave me a few tips on how I should place them in the room. I took their advice. Im overwhelmed at how good it now sounds. . They were easy to talk too. I did not need to spend a lot of money to get where I am now. I highly recommend this place for all your stereo and vinyl record needs.
High end stereo and audiophile grade equipment. Great record selection as well.
I wish I could give Stereo Unlimited more than 5 stars. For a guy who loves record and hi-fi stores, and has visited hundreds across the country, the gang down at SU are knowledgeable, friendly, fair, and very great to work with! This is a must stop for any audio hobbyist and music enthusiast. They are a San Diego institution and I feel are the finest hi-fi shop Ive come across.
Good for modern and the very old equipment. Also lps.
I’ve been going here for 30 years. Bruce, Ray, Bob, even the late Oran, always knew what I wanted and needed and helped me with purchases over the years. High end audio will always be around for us with real hearing and appreciation for amazing sound, and the engineers who forever reinvent that sound for the pleasure of listening to well recorded music. It’s truly one of the best enjoyments of being human.
This review is for Bruce. I called on a last ditch effort to setup my boyfriends stereo as a surprise. The volume on the record player and cd were extremely low. I told Bruce what system he had, he asked for the make and model and within minutes retrieved the manual. A button had been depressed which dampened the sound. It was easy but not something I noticed and to have the help meant a lot at the time. Thanks again Bruce
Update 2021: do not purchase anything and have it shipped by them. I purchased a preamp at the store and they shipped it to me. I received a much cheaper model and they said the one I purchased they would not have sold at that price. They said ship it back and they would refund me the money I paid for the item. waste of time and money. Go to Alma audio they are much better and professional. original review:Throw back to the days of great audio stores. Many rooms of top shelf equipment . You can get anything you need headphones to towers turntables to streaming. Many new and used lps as well.
Excellent selection crippled by lackluster customer service. Was down in San Diego and thought I stopped by to listen to the Diana Phi headphones. The people working here are just very apathetic in regards to helping me out. Makes miss the passion in audiophile world I get from my local Los Angeles Dealers at Shelleys Stereo and Upscale Audio. Good thing I have those stores to go to in LA instead.
I have visiting Stereo Unlimited and known Bruce and Ray for over 35 years. As with any high end store, there is a learning curve of the language and value of the subtle differences in the auditory experience. Humility and patience is the key here as a life long learner and an appreciation for beauty of the sonic enjoyment. I have always found them to be helpful and patient in that way. This is and never should be a Best Buy, and there is nothing wrong with Best Buy, just very different, since they are dealing with the audiophile and only high end products here.
Phone of specialist with an excellent used record selection as well as new records
Bought a Mcintosh amp, some speakers, and Vinyl from the team at Stereo Unlimited. Very knowledgable and friendly. Great selection of high end stuff at this store and can try out everything. Great experience..Thanks
I am a previous purchaser at Stereo Unlimited and recently went in to upgrade my speakers thinking they needed upgrading. However, Bob had walked through the system I had and came to be that I upgraded my turntable to MoFi Mobile Fidelity was the best move and never sounded better. Highly recommend them!!Thank you Bob!
I have been using these guys for 12 years for all my audio and home video needs. I have spent many hours in their record room buying new and used vinyl. Recently purchased a VTL 6.5 Preamp. Love it. Great store and advice.
I just love this store. The staff is amazing eager to help without any pressure. Their prices are reasonable and they stand behind their products. On Saturdays I love going in just to hear the new equipment they have set up. Im committed to buying all my stereo gear here.
Ray helped me pick out a fantastic home theater speaker package from Goldenear Technology, allowed me to demo several blu ray discs in their amazing home theater and even personally delivered the speakers himself the same day to my condo in Mission Valley. Thanks so much and I highly recommend Stereo Unlimited!
Simply amazing. The staff and the stereo equipment available enabled me to purchase the sound system of my dreams. Everyone was helpful and provided outstanding service both before and after my purchase. They even offered 100% credit on an upgraded turntable during the first year. I was so impressed I brought in a friend who raved later raved about his gear and the quality of the staff. Highly recommended!
Thee place to go for stereo equipment and music. They want to sell their Audiophile grade equipment, but not at the cost of a lasting relationship. They figure out your personal listening needs; Where you listen, your tastes and your available budget and fit that together to provide an experience that will bring joy for many years. I took a long time to decide what to buy but so glad I had them to guide my most important decisions. If you are a neophyte no need to worry, Bruce and the guys are top shelf audio guys, not pushy salesmen. I beg everyone to stop in and let them flip your audio world upside down. You will never hear music the same way again.
Bruce and his staff do an amazing job at knowing their products and what would be a good value for anyone with specific needs in regards to music genres. They truly understand there are very Musical setups and equipment for different budgets and desires. Ive trusted them for 20 plus years.
They need someone working the front who will actually care about customer service or at least would pretend to. The older guy with the pony tail at the front clearly didnt care about customer service, he had the most apathetic attitude on the phone too. Wandered around a bit looking for someone to help me and found no one. After a few minutes i decided to leave and The guy at the front was back and saw me come in and out the store and did not bother to ask if I had been helped at all.
Lots of product, but overpriced; some sales people (such as Ray) exerted great pressure for buying; it is not a store that welcomes visiting without buying. Do not feel comfortable going there.
This place is THE place. Bob adjusted (well fixed actually) our mmf turntable to a much more user friendly status plus made it more suitable to travel back home in the back seat of the car. He was very generous with his time and knowledge of stylus cleaners, record cleaners, general audio bizz info and invited us to the back to search their extensive well priced vinyl and even use the stores vinyl cleaner for ¢50 a pop!! (Hey you wanna kill an hour on a Saturday with gratis pizza, AND get those long played babies sounding rich again this is the place!) Like Bob said, theyve got headphones and speakers that start at $200-$250 to big bad high end audio at $50,000, cartridges, cable, wire, amps, pre amps, every quality manufacturer you could imagine, home theater stuff to die for, they have anything you may need. but the best part for me, hands down, even over free pizza Saturdays, and a place to wash my records, was Bob. We will be back!
These guys are excellent! Brought in a 40 year old turntable & the owners jumped in to troubleshoot the problems. They were joined by some of the regulars who were hanging out in the store. They had the problem fixed in a short time and the price was very reasonable. The store is a throwback to the mom & pop stores from the past. They people are knowledgeable and friendly. I would recommend this place to everyone interest in music.
—Vinyl Room Review—Uninteresting mediocre curation of records, this is basically like the Salvation Army across the street; went to both today and found the same albums in both no kidding. Difference was here you would pay $5 instead of $2, which is already expensive for a thrift store.Prices are out of touch, expensive for no real reason, nothing stands out, not enough variety. They have plenty of classical but I don’t take anything cause I can find better deals at other shops.Won’t be coming again really
Bruce was very gracious to give me a great education and time. I look forward to going back for whatever my equipment needs!
For the past 30 years, ive been comming to stereo unlimited for my equipment. these guys know their business. you cant go wrong.
Good value for the price. nice clean install. 6 months later no issues.
I went here for a new turntable and phono pre-amp, and I have been completely satisfied with what I was sold and how it was set up. I loved it so much I went back to trade up the pre-amp and they were kind enough to oblige. Now Im 150% happy with my music setup and will be using them for the next upgrade.
It was amazing to see such a huge selection of old Hi Fi Gear. Put on some Harmon Kardon Headphones with dire straits. Suddenly I realized . I have another passion.
Fun place for the best mens toys
I have been dealing with Bruce, Ray and his group of experts for over 20 years. They have never let me down and have always exceeded my expectations. My latest buy was a BAT Tube Pre Amp and it absolutely took my system to a new level....wow what a great piece of gear .......truly world class. No sales pressure at all. Bruce played a Fleetwood Mac LP, a record on a turntable, in his high end music room.....i have never heard anything like it in my life....it was magical. Support this San Diego Institution They did my complete Audio Video system too including instal. Its still working flawlessly and you cant see any wires. My wife loves it!Brad Shoemaker, Owner of Express Funding Mortgage Co. I know great service and Stereo Unlimited brings it big time.
Best stereo equipment in the san Diego area. Never up-sell me. I have vandersteen quattro speakers which take me to church. recently bought Abyss headphones for a couple of thousand, was going to spend more but did not need to after speaking to the guys at Stereo Unlimited and hearing the Abyss. Abyss headphones are insanely good. Studio sound quality. Advise all audiophiles to check it out.
Best place in town for HiFi and AV.
Pro: A difficult to beat selection of very high end speakers, headphones, etc.Con: Ive been twice now. Every employee is a pretentious, pushy, commission-seeking jerk. I will never go back. I will drive to comparable stores in LA for Ill go back there. Very evasive when you ask about return policies.
High quality hardware and a huge vinyl room.
Friendly, knowledgeable and low key
Good stereo shop
A+ Customer service!
Turntables, turntables and turntables, the best shop in town.
First time buyer- unpleasant, not customer friendly-cant remember the name but the guy is overweight/glasses . Will NOT recommend this place to anybody.
Unpleasant customer service.
Wide variety of vinyl and audio equipment!
The best in audio and video, vinyl!
