We had a wonderful experience. Everyone was extremely nice and welcoming from the very beginning to the end. BIG SHOUT OUT to Lucy McKnight, our adoption counselor, who assisted us throughout the whole adoption process. Lucy, thank you so much for helping us this weekend. You made this new adventure exciting and helped ease our nervousness as first-time cat parents. My partner and I had a million and one questions. We have a small dog and wanted a cat that would fit into our family. I’m also allergic to cats so Lucy diligently connected us with cats that she felt could potentially not flare me up into hives. It was trial and error until we found a kitten that we were interested in. My partner and I took the afternoon and returned the next morning to have a 1x1 contained interaction with our first choice to see if I would have an allergic reaction. Lucy stayed with us the whole time and was calm, patient, understanding, added no pressure on us yet was encouraging. Fortunately I had a very mild allergic reaction- I sniffed and cuddled with the cat a lot! To be honest, Lucy’s support is the real reason why we adopted our kitten, Bean. She understood our concerns, provided great recommendations, and helped us navigate this new endeavor. The facility was clean, safe, open, in case you were wondering what the adoption experience is right now. My recommendation is to walk around look at the Animals available and then go to the front desk and set up an appointment with a counselor like Lucy. Another note is we originally went in wanting an adult cat but after further discussion with the staff we decided to go with the kitten because that was the best fit for our lifestyle. I recommend going in with an open mind and heart. Be honest about what are your preferences because that helps the counselor find you a good fit. Bean is settling in very well and is extremely playful and curious to meet our dog Leela in a couple of days.
Decent place if your looking to get a pet. Most come with full background info, care info needs, and have little hotel rooms to view and play with before hand. Multiple visits may be required to find just the right pet, dont rush it find what feels right.
They take good care of all their babies here. Recently found a stray kitten with an infected tail injury that sadly required some minor amputation. They took really good care of her and even let me see her (when I was adopting a brother for her) before she was ready to be released back into my care. The staff who helped us were so kind and courteous and sincerely love animals.
Adoption counselor Mike was wonderful. He helped me find the perfect kitten for me. Thank you!
Unfortunately I was unable to locate my dog here. However the staff were extremely friendly and very thoughtful note that I was a disaster in the way of my sobbing tears and sniffles. They really are the best around here.
We adopted two kittens. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. The facility was beautiful and bright and I could tell the animals were taken care of with love. I would love to come back here in the future to adopt anymore furry friends :)
We got to go in, look at all the dogs. There were quite a few that we wanted but we only have room for one right now. We got to go into a room with the dog to see if the the dog would feel comfortable with us and vice versa. They gave us instructions on everything we needed to do to keep him healthy and to be legal dog owners. Then we signed papers payed monies and brought our Siberian Husky home. NOTE: When you go dont forget to take a leash and a collar for your dog. If youre getting a cat, rabbit or hamster dont forget to get a cage or box to bring your pet home.
Took 2 community cats for TNR(trap neutered, release) program, very nice and efficient staff . I re released the 2 cats they look healthy, and recovered well. This service is at no cost to the person taking the cats in, its a great service, humane way to control the community and feral cat overpopulation.
All the staff were very courteous and helpful when we brought in a stray we had trapped. We were hopeful this cute kitty would eventually be adopted out after neutering, vaccines and flea treatment. We were surprised that no cats are evaluated for adoption unless they are 6 months and younger. We had to search for other organizations to help and the Humane Society referred us to a woman who was willing to take our cat. Her shelter began due to the policy of the Humane Society and the age restriction to evaluate cats for adoption.
I had my rabbit vaccinated at their clinic and the whole experience was great. I hadnt seen the downtown location in years and so much had changed inside and out! Its a beautiful facility with lots of light and space! It was a joyful experience!!
This place is fantastic! One of the best humane societies I have ever been too. I adopted to kitties and you can tell they really care about their animals there. Highly reccomend.
Everyone was genuinely and sincerely helpful during our visit. Our adoption of Ben and Elise (now named Cash and Cookie) was seamless and efficient. Thank you so much. And thank you Volunteers.
Kind and speedy service. Was a 20 minutes wait to pay for licensing, 6 people infront of me in line. Parking however was an issue. Drove around their establishment looking for a spot and found none had to park down the street and walk. Was better with appointments only during covid.
Humane society is awesome excellent customer service very caring loving people if you have any issues with your cat take a chance with the humane society because Ill tell you theres nothing that beats in San Diego
Staff were very helpful and a pleasure to work with. Very adorable animals
Great place to find a companion. Call them to clarify if you have any questions.. Homing fees are very flexible and vary on animal age.
They were very helpful on locating my dog they treated her good and gave her all her shots even though I already had them done. They charged me nothing to get her back. Thank you
I admitted my two babies here - Inuyasha and Queen. Please take care of them - because I really love them so much. They were my only family that I had to give up because I couldnt give them anymore what they need.Daddy loves you so much and I am so sorry I failed you two.I pray you find a good home one day and pray that you have good healthSo sorry
Dedicated, caring professionals, who do everything they can for animals. When we found an injured dove, the Wildlife Rescue wing took it in & rehabilitated it. We got our wonderful dog from them 20 years ago, and every year we do the Walk For Animals to help raise funds for this exemplary organization.
They need to actually post on when a dogs been adopted on animals been adopted so you dont go up front back and forth constantly like when I adopted a dog in Las Vegas at least they would at least post that the dog has been adopted it would make it easier
They were so kind and informative, and very professional, plus the facility itself was beautiful, clean, and well-organized, which instilled confidence in me as a (then) puppy parent-to-be. I brought my sweet girl home this very same day without all the rigamarole and delay that other agencies can sometimes involve. I was actually pretty discouraged before coming here after my experiences with a few other places but this was a great experience. They provided detailed background information on all of the animals I was interested in and let me know about any areas of potential difficulty (health, behavior, comportment). The ladies who helped me were patient with all of my questions and gracious about my apprehensions, and gave me great tips on how to help my new friend adjust to a new home with me.Also there were tons of services (like vaccinations, spaying, first vet visit and complimentary behavioral assessment) that were either included in the adoption fee or well discounted. The pup I chose was shaking like a leaf when I first saw her but her bright, intelligent eyes said she was a gem. I was a little worried that she might be a tad too shy and skittish for me to be able to help her through but Im glad I was encouraged with great advice plus their adoption guarantee because now me and Lily (short for Lillian! 😁) are both happy campers and getting along great. Im looking forward to a long and fun-filled friendship together! 🥰
Amanda helped me adopt my gohrgeous kitty ( Sevoolig ) aka Blacky.documents, chip & some vacc. supplied.
Super clean, friendly and all the animals look very well taken care of

All the staff and volunteers are friendly and helpful. The place is clean and the animals all have a decent amount of space with toys and beds and other things for comfort. Even just walking around there is a lot of information listed for each animal including some health and behavior history as well as helpful tips for which animals will be okay in homes with kids or other pets, etc. Plus the adoption process was pretty simple and we left with everything we needed for our new pet including a free bag of the food she had been eating there.
Great place, very organized and you can tell the staff loves what they do. I was in and out in 5 mins and very affordable.
Took a tour today and bowled over!SDHS is way More than a shelter. It’s the Largest Humane Society in US, established 139 years ago. Here are some amazing facts:5500 volunteers50k animals / year3400 foster animals30k field calls1st kitten nursery in US100 veterinary staff15,000 spay/neuter procedures each year
LOVE the San Diego Humane Society. They have super great facilities and a great staff.I’ve adopted a dog there and taken a puppy to their puppy classes. We learned a lot in the class and our puppy is so well behaved. She sits at tables with us at restaurants and never even comes near our food. (The pictures are her in class)They have great resources too if you want to get your pet fixed but can’t afford it. They’ll fix any chihuahua or pit bull as well as house cats for you and charge based on your income. They will also fix any breed under 100 lbs if you are active duty military. Out in town we got an estimate of $1000 to get our puppy fixed and here it is $95!! Take advantage if you can!I also just love coming in and looking at all the cute little guinea pigs and bunnies!! You don’t have to sign anything before walking around and looking you can just look!
Adopted a kitten 🐈! Great experience. The pet counselor was very knowledgeable and helpful.
The people that work here are 100% committed to helping you find your next animal companion! Despite the ongoing challenges the pandemic provides, we were able to set up an appointment with a potential new dog for a meet and greet. While we ultimately ended up not adopting said dog, the woman who facilitated the meeting was friendly, controlled, and was able to answer all of our questions easily.
Making structural improvements and promoting the adoption of animals in a friendly and safe way. Also clean, and aesthetically well put together for an industrial parkish looking place
Saving animals gotta be the best thing anyone can do, and these people are my personal heroes.
Great service. Took care of my Dog Scooby even tho hes a butthead and bites
Loved it very professional, staff is friendly and great customer service
They were very kind and understanding
My room mate and I are foster parents, they have good employees there.
Its not a good experience getting a dog from here if your lucky enough to get a response and if you dont own a car your pretty much out of luck unless you promise you will leave in an Uber and as soon as they hear you dont own a car they look down on you from there out. And Ill give you a heads up, definitely dont mention the trolley or you wont get an animal. The only reason I gave two stars is because I got a dog that I love after 3 months of trying and then I realized I was going to have to lie to get a dog which I seriously dont like doing. But if I didnt they would still have the dog I got hostage.
They were very nice but didnt treat my dogs wounds.
A bit long of a wait even with an appointment. Their COVID procedures are pretty simple and yet effective
We adopted a dog that had already been brought back to the facility twice. The two complaints were that she was not compatible with birds and cats, so it was no problem for us, but I was told that if she was returned a third time (by us), then she might have been euthanized. Although it weighed on me for a while after we first got her because she would react by barking at other animals, there is no way we would ever given up our adopted dog. Within just a few days she calmed down, and after a couple of years, shes loving to everyone in the family, including our other dog. She had a forever home with us! My MEME for her, is that getting her was the best money I ever spent!
Great caring and timely service
They have great service
Staff is great. Quick care for animals.
I am giving this a 4 star review because I had difficulty contact the licensing department several times and was forwarded to an automated voice system. I am writing this review to give my compliments to the employee Olivia. She went out of her way to assist me and make sure that my dog was officially registered. If it was based solely on her customer service this review would be 5/5!
The people here really care about you and your critter family, keep sharing the love SD Humane society 🤗
This place is a great place to come and get your rabies shot it cost $12 for one or $12 for three years.
We went to the Humane Society looking for the right cat to join our family with an older cat and young child. When I told the helper, she took us right to a beautiful ginger cat. She had been abandoned and living on the streets covered in fleas. She had a broken tail that just healed. From the very moment we met her, Butterball was a sweetheart. We took a look at a few other cats and kittens, but we knew that she was the cat for us.The process was laid back by meeting with a counselor and getting to know the Butterball. After, it took about a half hour to do the paperwork, pick out things at the Petco store in the building, and bring our new addition (who we named Lucy) home.Thank you to the Humane Society for taking care of another cat that we love and for all you do for the animals. We were impressed with the facilities and staff! We definitely recommend this location for people with young children because of the welcome nature and process.
I love the humane society but i think i was treated unfairly. I just got a dog from this guy who had lost her twice and she waa taken to rhe pound. The animal law lady told me that rven rhoigh I was just getting her. If she got brought there for runnung loose one more time. I would be fimed more thsn $300. So the new dog owner vets no mistskes
SDHS is like no other animal shelter; they have a list of great community programs that never stops growing. The staff cares so much about the animals and their owners/adopters and their educational programs are amazing. Project Wildlife does amazing work rehabbing local wildlife species of all kinds. They even have a behavior helpline that you can call for training advice free of charge! Theres way too much to type but I would encourage everyone to support this organization in any way that they can. Adopt, donate, volunteer, foster or utilize one of their many services if you are in need!
Very busy looked at the dogs and will return at a less busy time if there is one.
SD Humane Society is a beautiful campus with wonderful people who work there!
$300 for minor off leash. My last donation!
Thank you!! Such a great experience. The lost and found area helped me find my dogs when all hope was lost. They are now home safe and sound so thank you Humane Society. You are all angels on earth.
We had a roaming, injured doggo in he neighborhood. Unfortunately, sweet boi was not chipped. Because my best girl does not do well with other doggos and because of his injury, bringing him here was the best option. Going to an animal shelter during a pandemic...it was well managed. I feel as though other facilities should visit this site and implement their strategies. The volunteers are awesome and working hard for these animals. If youre searching for a fur friend, theres a sweet boi, pit terrier, who I think would make someone very happy.
Amazingly everyone I came in contact with was in a good mood and helpful. Thank you.
Many years ago I adopted the most wonderful cat from SDHS. All these years I have been supporting this great organization that is doing a wonderful job taking care of the animals. However, it would help greatly if the online adoption procedure is explained more clearly. So, (at least) 5 stars for the way they take care of the animals ... hoping at the same time that the online adoption procedure will be improved.
Because thru the course of the pandemic, the San Diego Humaine Society, has been offering food free for dogs and cats. Its been the lifeline for my boys to have been able to eat maintaining their usual routine and that kept me from loosing what was left of my mind too loose
We adopted our dog Benji from the humane society and they just loved him so when the time came that Benji had to be euthanized I Took him there. They were so loving and compassionate to him even though my heart is broken I feel comfortable that he went where they loved him so much
The San Diego Humane Society has always been a well organized place to keep our pets up to date on licensing and required vaccinations. Of course during the Covid crisis, things are much quieter, since the pets are put away and access is limited, but we know once this crisis is over, the SDHS will be one of the most visited places for our pets needs and for people to view for adoption and the best rates in the county, so drop by for some added family fun.
Great staff with great attitude. Super busy.
They need donations badly. Blankets, bowels, dog beds food, money. It can be used items as long as they are clean and u damaged.
I love this organization. Its equally a happy place as it is sad.
Humane society was great! I implore ALL HOOMANS who are looking to add a member to their fam to adopt from A SHELTER!! PLEASE!! The counselor we had was awesome, she helped us narrow down from multiple doggos to find exactly the right fit for our existing rescue family. There counselor literally spent 1.5 hours on the phone w us sifting through behaviours of the dogs we were interested in to find our new girl Valkyrie.
I love the San Diego Humane Society.A stray cat made it to my house and she said her name was Zoe Simba. We love her. I would like to keep her. I will call when you are open.
Beautiful place for animals without their forever home yet. As of July 8th, the Humane Society has taken over animal services for most of San Diego. Spent time today with daughter building new beds for the dog kennels on the pound side of the facility. We volunteer there as a family. His is a zero-kill facility and organization. One of the best places to volunteer or find a pet companion for you or your family. There is a Petco onsite.
It is a blessing places like these however why so much form filing and invasive questioning about me before my dog can be seen
Went to drop off a wild animal at the project wildlife center. Its really cool that they have a separate area for wildlife!
Took in a wild baby rabbit the cat had brought in. Very helpful
Love this place they saved my Akita girl.
Staff is super nice
The employees at the humane society really care about the animals here. Its an upbeat environment where animals are celebrated and loved!Weve adopted dogs from here, trained our dogs here, volunteered our time here, and have said goodbye to our very much loved dogs here when it was their time to leave earth. Every interaction Ive had with the people who work here has been amazing. They have a little shop where you can pick up needed items for your new friend too. The last time I was there they also had a coffee cart out front for snacks and drinks to enjoy!
Good experience, nice building!
Adopt dont shop
Adopted two beautiful senior Beagles
A truly Great animal Halfway House! Every human I interacted with was friendly and generous with assistance. And, Yes I came home with a pooch, a 5 year old Jack Russel who was/is friendly as can be. As small as he is hes a great guard dog letting me know of company b4 the doorbell does. Came as skin & bones that hes since overcome.Family = Happy!
I’ve called in on a few different occasions and they are always so helpful. Excellent customer service!!
Best place to adopt a pet! Love everything they do for animals here❤
Loved it thank you very much
