Just moved to Richmond, so needed to find a barber. Being partial to old school barber shops, I found John Marshall to give it a try. Im happy to report Ive found my spot. Victor was great! He was very welcoming, listened to what I wanted, and gave me the cut I requested, along with fun conversation. Will definitely be back!
Looking for a good barber shop and found this. Victor did a perfect job and the price was very reasonable. Great old time atmosphere. Clean and orderly. Very satisfied.
Great bunch of guys, been going there for 30+ years. Hugh, the owner, is the best friend ever.
Been going there for years, A real barber shop . Victor is great. Wonderful atmosphere in a historic Richmond landmark. Well worth a try and you will probably repeat.
Great cut from Maya for the second time... Beatiful shop!
Mara is a skilled and attentive professional who consistently provides excellent results.
I have visited once a month for years . Infact, followed my Barber from another place. They are all very personable.
Great experience. I would recommend The John Marshall Barber shop to anyone and everyone. Victor is an amazing Barber.
Been coming here 42 years. Drive an hour for a haircut and wouldn’t go anywhere else. Personable, fun and accommodating. Get your shoes polished while you get your hair cut.
I’ve been going to this barber shop for 3 years ever since I moved to Richmond. I see Mara every time but everyone in there is top notch. I had gone my whole life only ever being “okay” with my haircut. That all changed when I got my haircut by Mara! When I say she literally cuts it perfect EVERY time I have gone for over 3 years, I am not kidding. I have since recommended this barber shop to everyone I know who comes to Richmond and they have come out looking like a million bucks no matter what barber they see in the shop. I cannot recommend this place enough, if you want the best haircut money can buy in Richmond (maybe even the east coast) come here!! Oh and did I mention the price is one of the best in the city as well.
The shop itself is nice. It’s in a historic building (from what I was told) and has a old style to it. That’s where the good part of my experience ended. The website shows they open at 7:30am but you basically have to have an appointment. I was told that if I came back in 45min someone would see me. The lady that cut my hair was anything but humble. She just kept going on about who’s hair she’s cut but was asking me which number of guards she should use to cut my hair. I’m not a barber, I told her how long I wanted it but we could get started until I asked her to show me the guards so I could read the lengths written on them. I had originally asked for a haircut and a shave when I had first come in but when I brought up the shave again I was told I’d have to make an appointment with someone else later. Price wise it’s a bit high too. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone else.
I will NEVER come back to this barbershop! Maybe I made a mistake in coming here because I was in a hurry. But the female barber that was there seems like she never cut a black mans hair before, and it showed! She did not edge me up at all, which is VERY important! She just shaved it all off! I was NOT happy and Ill be sure to tell my circle of friends to go to a barber that has experience in cutting African American hair. No offense to her and her career. I just wasnt happy with the final service, but I still paid.
Victor has decades of experience and is truly a master of his craft. He consistently delivers an excellent haircut. You will not find a better barber in the Richmond area. Highly recommend
I have never reviewed a business before, but I had to make an exception for the astoundingly poor service I received at John Marshall Barber Shop. For a place that calls itself a traditional barber shop it certainly doesnt retain any of those values. They do not make you feel welcome. They are completely devoid of professionalism. They also dont finish a cut with a straight razor, which was strange. I will not be returning. *Note* I cannot speak on Hugh Campbell, the owner who seemed like a very pleasant person. The first time I received a cut from Mara Leocadio. The cut was rushed. She ignored me nearly the whole time. But in the end, the cut was alright. The second time I received a cut from Victor Gonzalez. I asked for a high fade like the last time. The cut took nearly an hour, and I thought it might have been due to his attention to detail, however I think it might have been more of an inattention while he was watching the TV. Towards the end the haircut resembled more-so a bowl cut than a high fade and when I asked him to make the puffing bits shorter he became frustrated and mean. In the end I was still dissatisfied, however I still tipped because he spent a lot of time. As I was leaving he said that he was glad that I was the last person so he could spend more than an hour on me, scoffed and then snarkily snapped that I would finally be free.
One of the oldest barbershops around, Mr. Campbell the current owner has been there over 40 years and is quite a person to talk to.. there are several other people currently working for him..all appear to be very knowledgeable about their jobs and are pleasant to interact with..I have been getting my haircut there for approximately six months and have not gotten a bad haircut
Friendly service great prices.
Unprofessional. Called a few days ahead of time to schedule an appointment and twice the girl who was suppose to cut my hair was a no show. No notification or anything. This has happened twice! They can kiss my business goodbye, I don’t have time to waste sitting there wondering where she is.
Nice place. Got a great cut. They do offer a cut and shampoo which I probably will get next time.
Love this place. Convenient spot for anyone working downtown. Mara is awesome!
Mara is an exceptional barber. She treats each haircut like it is a work of art and truly makes you feel like she cares. The haircut is well worth the $20 + $5 tip cost.
I have been getting my haircut here for five years, which is a small amount of time compared to many of the shops other patrons. Mr. Campbell is a great American and gives one of the best (if not the best) haircuts in town. I highly recommend John Marshall Barber Shop to anyone who works in or near downtown.
Thank you Lindsay, you did a great job, the place was clean and the barbars were friendly. Will be coming back and recommend you to others. I called and you took me right in without an appointment.
Mara did my haircut today and she was really nice and friendly. The haircut is fantastic with $20 plus $3 tax. Recommended. Appointment is needed if you want haircut right away.
Linda cuts an awesome haircut. Ive been to some high-end salons recently and couldnt get the right cut but Linda knows haircutting! And shes fast-in and out in 20 minutes.
Excellent haircut, about as good as any I had in Brookyln. Victor knows conservative cuts quite well.
My favorite classy barbershop. Everyone is friendly, especially Mr. Campbell, the owner. And you have the added bonus of possibly running into the Governor getting his hair cut.
Made an appointment twice with Mara ahead of time, and she didn’t show up both times. Victor basically shrugged his shoulders at me, which shows that no one there really cares about customer service here. Won’t be coming back, and would advise anyone who reads this to follow the lead. Read the bad reviews.
This is the only place I go for a haircut. I work downtown, do its a 10 minute walk. Do your best to have an appointment or you may not get your haircut.
Clean. Great service and cuts. Downtown parking is difficult.
I am new to Richmond and I was looking for a place in town that does a good flat top. Mara did a fantastic job. Ill be back
Terrible, I had to literally walk back in because it was uneven on both sides, and they couldn’t even fix it the 2nd time.
Victor is the best! Best place for a cut in Richmond! Best to make an appointment ahead of time though!
Got a great beard trim and neck shave from Lindsay at a great price!
Mana does a great job. Ive been happy with every cut Ive had there. Great throwback barbershop and best prices around.
Best barber Ive ever been to. Will only go here from now on!
Treat well and quick. Good results most of the time.
I called ahead to see if they had appointments open and they did so I came in about a hour after I made the appointment. No one was in there except for one guy in the chair. Mara took me she cut my hair in less than 20 minutes and messed up my hair really bad. She rushed for no reason and my hair line is now uneven. The hair around my ears and the back of my neck is uneven. She even gave my a tiny bald spot by cutting my hair to high and too short. This is the worst experience I have ever had and I won’t be coming back. I’m new to Richmond so this the first place I went to.
To be honest, I had terrible haircuts. While She was cutting my hair, I asked her to make me face the mirror but she rejected and I don’t know why. And she did a lot of things that i disn’t asked her about.
Great service and great cut
Best Haircut in the City. Period. Victor is old school and phenomenal.
Victor is awesome!
Quality, fast haircuts, and beard trims. Mara is great!
This is a boutique salon geared towards men. The staff are friendly but it is overpriced and you must have an appointment.
Its a Richmond institution. You should give yourself a treat and experience a haircut in a traditional barbershop. Hugh Campbell, the long time barber there, once gave me a free haircut when I was looking for a job.
This place is straight trash. Rude on the phone, rude in-person.
Ive gone almost a year before deciding to write a review, but seeing that others have left comments on Yelp to the same effect of the experience I had, I felt compelled to do so.I was going to JM barber for a year, to the same woman, as the quality of her haircuts were great, although she was always pretty rough around the edges to put it nicely. She seemed to get crankier the longer I went there, and on the last occasion, she was straight up as rude as can be. She acted like she didnt know who I was when I tried to engage in friendly conversation, then talked to me the whole time like I was an idiot who was bothering her. She did finally apologize for being so awful when I was paying out, after explaining some horrendously personal information about why she was in such a bad mood. Ive seen her on more than one occasion treat people really badly, especially walk-ins, so I know this wasnt a one-time occurrence. As did the reviewer on Yelp, Im leaving two stars because the owner of the place is a really stand-up gentleman, and the place is gorgeous and rich in RVA history. Its a shame that someone who doesnt seem to appreciate where they work and who might have a little too much job security has ruined an experience that I used to look forward to.
Victor is the man. He gives a good haircut and has appointments on Saturday - which is huge for me.
Best haircut I’ve gotten in a while. I may have to commit the most deadly sin of all time, Barber adulatory.
Excellent barber shop, laid back atmosphere, and Lindsay is a great stylist
Top notch, appointments only.
Terrible place, made an appointment with Victor waited 15 minutes and he was not there. Not in the shop period. Will never go back again.
You should update the times youre open. Walked up at 4:45 on Monday and you were closed.
Great place to get a hair cut
Great place for a great haircut
Linda is the only one I trust to cut my hair in Richmond.
2:30 PM Monday, they were closed.
Make an appointment and see Victor!!
