Honestly I can’t believe what just happened at this place. I had made an appointment to surrender two kittens. Two people walked in with no appointment in the time I was there and they were helped. I tried the day before to come in a was told it was not possible to walk in and that appointments were required.I was “helped” by a tall and skinny middle aged woman with long grey hair that was entirely unpersonable and really just rude. Beside the lack of communication and general unpleasant demeanor, she just picked up my crate and took it away without saying that this was the last time I would see my kittens. I had these babies over two months and found them when they had no home. I had to ask her to bring me his collar (with my personal phone number on it) and she had an attitude when asked. Furthermore, she didn’t acknowledge that when I handed her my surrender paper that I was good to leave. She just completely ignored me. I walked back into the place in literal tears after considering this service and asked to say goodbye but she said she has no idea how long the check in process would be. She assumed that since I was filling out paperwork I had said goodbye. So ASK. Your service is filled with difficult goodbyes sometimes. It couldn’t have killed her to at least ask if I was ready before walking off with them and then not letting me go say bye. This lady made this very sad day so much worse and honestly I’m devastated. Don’t work at a front desk of any business if you act like this. Your treatment of peoples affects them.
I arrived early for an appointment to drop off my two parakeets. Courteous, friendly staff processed my case immediately. The public areas are spotless. Kind, professional staff made a tough moment easier to bear.
My daughter adopted her dog and Kitty from them. They really cared about finding the dog and cat a home. I want to thank the shelter and staff for helpingus
Dropped off a stray dog I found. The location seemed clean, staff was friendly, and the in-take process for the stray was quick. I was given a piece of paper to track him on their website to see if he got adopted and I thought that was nice.
What an awesome experience!! I know it was luck and timing, but I was able to find the perfect addition to my family here! My perfect little Leonardo! 😍 The staff was so helpful and friendly which was greatly appreciated. I would absolutely recommend checking them out if you are thinking/ready adopt you new pet. They have a range of dogs who need a home and love.
Best place to adopt a furry family member. The staff and the volunteers are amazing people that genuinely care about the animals having a loving and caring forever home.
I visited the Wake Co Animal Shelter in 2016 soon after I moved to Raleigh. I bought the book Landfill Dogs as a Cocktail book. I loved it! What I didnt know that this book would become a game in my house. I often have clients in my home on my sofa. Just to chill while I do something in my office for them. So after a year I realized that the Landfill Dogs book would always be moved but the others would not.Popular Cocktail table books, Architectural Marvels, Gary Player Golf Courses, Madonnas, Beatles, Cottages and Coastal Books. The Best. But ALWAYS, LANDFILL DOGS would be moved. So I started a game, I would pick the book that would most interesting to my client, Senior, Single, Married, Millennials, GenX, you name it. They ALL opened the book and looked at it. News on the Big Screen, Music Playing, Drink on the table for them. They all had to see the dogs. Shannon Johnstone the Author did us a great favor creating this book. 100% of the proceeds go to the care and keeping of these wonderful animal, the fantastic team that care for them and the amazing volunteers. God bless them all.BUY THE BOOK PEOPLE. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL BOOK.
Staff is friendly, seen to care about what they are doing. Animal were well tended to (it appeared). HOWEVER - the fees are a little stiff to rejoin with your own pet.. last but not least, they do their best to ensure that pets dont go home with their rightful owners (a bit frustrating when in a hurry, but a measure Im grateful for in the long run).
Y’all really telling people that dogs “ came in “ neutered, when in reality the dog was spayed like 2 days before you give him to someone and you didn’t tell them so now the dog is in pain and on multiple different medications. do better. terrible.
We always adopt from this location. The shelter is always clean. They always have a diverse selection of pets and give you instructions on the care of your new pet.
This facility is love in action! God bless the staff...
Excellent staff, very helpful. Nice clean facility. We have adopted several dogs from this location. Please consider adoption before spending money buying a pet.
People are nice. Place is pretty clean. Great if you are looking for a large dog. Small ones? No go elsewhere. Ive been 3 times and they are gone the minute the place opens.
Great overall experience. Plenty of parking. Staff was friendly. If its your first visit they give an overview of the adoption process. We visited in July… TONs of kittens. Only loses a star because they don’t seem to have a play room to interact with the kittens, so it was a bit crowed with multiple adopters. In the kitten areas (there are 4 rooms), there are stacked cages (all seemed clean), each with a litter of kittens or a singular cat. Kittens that have already been claimed for adoption are marked with a slip on their cage. We did have to wait 1 day to bring our girl home, as she need to be spayed. All kittens are spayed/ neutered and chipped before they come home. Adoption fee was about $45 (special on kitten week). We named our girl “Salsa.” She is getting along great with our older cat “Tango.”
Was a clean facility. Not many in house animals. (Which is a good thing) front help was very helpful on information regarding adopting an animal thats in a foster home and etc.
I just want to say thank you to the amazing staff for everything they do. I met my best friend here a little over a year ago. I appreciate the love they gave her during her stay because I know how difficult shelter life can be on a pup. The staff really truly cares for all the animals that walk through their doors.
I ended up adopting this beautiful boy right here. Only a 9 month old kitten. Everyone was friendly and the animals well cared for. The dogs were being taken out either by a volunteer or employee and trained for basic commands. For a shelter it was clean but definitely full of animals in need of adoption.
This place was great. We didn’t end up with a dog but the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. They helped us even though we were there at the last few minutes of them being open.
Great place to find a new pet friend. This is my second pet from here. Prices were great. Know what to expect from a shelter pet, old owner knew nothing about dogs. Turns out the dog was house broken, was in great health, very easy to train and sooooo loving. Our new dog just needed a strong consistent leader who had patience.
If youre looking for a smaller dog this is not the place to go. Staff said they do not keep them very long because they can get out of the cages. So they are usually referred to local shelters.
All the animals are real humans in my family and imaginary social life i wasnt allowed to look because the desk said they werent open high kill shelter i was next to be uthenised im already dead in the kennel
I adopted my beautiful Athena there today. The process was easy and simple. The fees was cheaper than most shelters. The place looks clean and animals look like there are well taken care of. I would definitely recommend this place!
Met my amazing cat (John Paul Jones) here and he has been the most perfect addition to the family. Hes beautiful, healthy, and happy. The most loving little animal Ive ever met. They made it so easy for me to adopt him, neutered him, and microchipped him. If I couldve, I wouldve adopted every cat there. Im so glad I met this cat. Thank you, WCAC!! ❤️
Be careful before you adopt at this place. I adopted a dog from here for $95, they made me wait 6 days before I could pick him up. Unfortunately on the day I was supposed to pick him up, an emergency happened that was out of my control and I was unable to pick up the dog at the scheduled time. I called and asked if I could pick up the dog the next day instead, they told me NO because of the contract I signed. And then I asked to be refunded and they also told me NO because of this contract. So I basically just gave this place my money.I understand I signed a contract saying I would be there to pick up the dog, but at the end of the day as humans emergencies happen, especially during the pandemic we are currently in. This place needs to review its adoption policy and be a little more understanding, especially since I had to pay SIX days in advance before I could get the dog; anything can come up in six days.So now I have NO dog and I lost $100. So be careful when you adopt here, if you have to change your schedule at all for any reason on pickup day, they will take your money.
Only put 4 stars because I havent actually gone through the adoption process with them, but the kennels were clean and spacious.
Excellent service and support for my first adoption
Very nice facility and caring staff.
Can you surrender you dog here ? Because I’m trying to get in the process of surrendering my aggressive dog and I don’t really know what to do !!!.
Great place, friendly and extremely helpful staff. Got a cat and the adoption process was quick, easy and all in all wonderful. Highly recommend checking it out if youre looking for a furry friend big or small!
Came to the shelter today for a cat, and the service was good, but could have been a little better. Overall, the place was pretty clean and the cats seemed happy and healthy. I would say I am happy with this shelter and 10/10 would get more pets here
The kitten we adopted likes to eat anything he can get or steal. 10/10 would adopt more in the future. Handling Covid in a good way at this shelter. I hope to see this place help more people find small rage balls of love.
Great place love our new family dog and she loves it with us her name is Hazel only 10 months but she is big and full of energy...knew she was the one for us right when we laid eyes on her and she knew she was coming home with us.....crazy thing is she had just got in the shelter that day and we was there to bring her home with us....I recommend everyone if your dog lovers please go get you a new fur friend from there they have plenty wish I could bring them all out of there....Have a great big back yard for her but she mostly stays in the house with us her bed is in our bedroom....but Imma end with this we love our new family member....everyone Go get you a pet from here they have plenty.
Very nice people. Got a great adult cat in sept
I was sad that most of the animals seemed anxious and or aggressive. They are very nice at the front desk and the team in the back with the animals is very helpful. The cages are clean and the animals seem well fed. I wanted to adopt a dog but after my son and I were in the cage the dog began to growl at my son who is five. The team members seemed to not know very much about the temperaments of the animals.
It is a good place to adopt a puppy
I got my dog from here and when I got him he was in perfect shape and I saw all the other animals they are treated with kindness totally recommending to all my friends and family who wants a dog car or any other animal
I wish I could take them allllll home!!! Kennels are clean, staff was friendly and helpful, animals all seemed very well taken care for!
Some of the people act like they don’t want to help you, seemed like like didn’t care to speak with you, some of the girl that worked there weren’t very friendly at all like they were being sarcastic when they did say hi and stuff.
Such a great place to adopt animals. Everyone was very helpful and kept up the covid security measurements. Best shelter I have ever went to!
Wonderful And Understanding StaffI Was Very Emotional And They ComfortMy Feelings And Encouragement Was Great
There are few shelters you will find that have such a constant flow of animals, literally thousands each year, and is still such a clean and safe environment for animals and the public alike. Staff and volunteers are incredibly dedicated to every single animal-- there is so much hard work done behind the scenes to make sure strays can find their owners, sick animals and those dumped in boxes outside get their needs met, and that every animal has ample chances to find a forever home. Whats more proof than anything is that nearly all of the thousands of incoming animals are either adopted, transferred, or returned back to their lost owners, and this rate is growing even more yearly because of our amazing adopters and shelter team! Having been a volunteer at the shelter for over 1.5 years makes me more confident than ever to recommend adopting one of the incredible, loving, homeless pets from the WCAC.
All the animals seemed sad, kennels not in best condition, it was heart breaking.
Has cute animals in a clean facility 10/10
I adopted a dog from them almost three years ago and recently needed to update my dogs microchip. I couldn’t find the paper so I called them and they helped me out. They did everything that could to help me. I will be adopting another dog from there in the future. The staff are very loving people!
Most visits here have resulted in me either finding a pet or finding a pet for someone I know. All things considered, the facility is pretty clean and I love that they adopt out all kinds of animals. I think the volunteer staff is incredible.
They are so rude here and seem like they do not want their animals to be adopted. It felt like we were such a burden asking to see a cat we thought might be our missing cat. The people who we interacted with seemed miserable and annoyed. There was one girl who was so nice and helpful and I wish I could remember her name so hopefully the workers see this and can act more like her. I would highly recommend that this establishment had some type of class, instructor, or session where they learn about customer service, compassion, and how to simply be kind. You’d think people who work with animals and helping animals get re-homed would be nicer.
Spoke to someone by the name of Daniel on the phone. He has no sense of customer service and 0 personality. Seems like the person they allow to pick up the phone should be friendly. But what do I know. I’m just a person willing to spend my money, give business and patronize the shelter. Not anymore however. Thanks to Daniel Wake County can kiss my business goodbye. He should really find a new job since he among other faculty members seems miserable and overworked. With today’s technology I can just simply adopt a pet online: that’s exactly what I should’ve have done in the first place.
Sad to see so many homeless dogs there. Everyone should adopt from the shelter.
Went there to have my cat put down. Very understanding.
Called for help with 15 cats about to be homeless and was told sorry you are .2 miles out of wake so we cant help you.... they are more willing to let animals possibly die then to try and figure out away to help. Couldnt even provide me with help or resources just a heartless not our problem kind of tone. I was going to donate 200$ i was so excited when i had a family member tell me they found a place to take the cats to be met with such disregard. Yall should not be intrusted with animals. Probably have dead ones in your freezer.
We had a good experience adopting our dog at the Wake County Animal Shelter. The staff was friendly and it was an easy process to reserve and pay for our dog once we decided. They require dogs to be spayed/neutered before you take them home, so you dont have an option but to let the shelter perform the surgery (if theyre not already fixed). Please adopt and not shop it youre able!! We love our shelter dog.
I hate my doggie was in doggie jail..but they were nice..price is another thing..I love its going to help other pets..
Very nice folks to care for the misplaced animals. This shelter has had tremendous improvements over the last few years. I have adopted several fur babies here and they are wonderful additions to my family. Good job!
Its taco bell. My wife loves this one in wake forest. The food is always good. It would get 5 stars but sometimes there is a long wait.
Arrived slightly before noon, when they open, to inquire about adopting 2 adult mastiff females that were on the website. They said they were not available - that they are not allowed to adopt out dogs over 100#. 2 young female employees told me that they are on the website for information only - to try to find the owners. There was nothing on the site that indicated they could not be adopted. I asked if I could foster them - and was told that they also do not allow individuals to foster dogs over 100#. They said they will send them to a rescue. I asked which rescue would be picking them up if the owner did not claim them and was told that was not disclosed to the public. We recently lost our 2 big 100#+ dogs and these two wouldve been a good fit. The shelter employees were extremely unhelpful. There was a young man at the front office who even refused to give me his name. He said that they do not have to give out their name so they dont. I gave up. Hope the dogs owners came to claim them.
Friendly, helpful staff. All animals seemed to be being taken care of as well as reasonably possible. Every pets info sleeve even has a dry erase last cuddled time on it! We didnt find our lost cat, but they were very helpful about helping us look.
I arrived today to see if my missing dog that was stolen was there. I looked on the website and there was a small Chihuahua on there. While walking down the hallway a women came out one of the rooms and asked if she could help me. I told her I was looking for a small chihuahua that was on the website. The dog weighed about 7 lbs. I told her this so she takes me to a dog that weighs 45 lbs and said this is him. I said its not and asked to see that dog. So she became really snotty and said Well okay follow me but you cant touch him I told her if it was my dog I WOULD TOUCH HIM.Before going she wanted to see pictures of my Jasper and I told her to just take me to the dog. After seeing the little guy it wasnt my dog. But she said something very disturbing. They deemed the dog not adoptive material. Why because he has dental disease. So your not going to adopt a dog because they have dental disease.I went to the front and asked a woman at the desk. Why this little dog was not going to be adoptive and she said a rescue was going to get him. I have a friend that runs a rescue and according to her no rescue is in line for the little guy. I have been there and know for a fact they had a puppy there that had heart worms they adopted to another friend of mine. So you can get a dog with heart worms but a dog with bad teeth you cant ?????This place is BAD
Nice place with nice people and really cute animals! Love the fact that the volunteers are so passionate and just seem to genuinely care about all the animals!!
Love pre covid being able to view the pets but even during covid the staff is very patient and understanding. Think my first dog will deff be a rescue.
I put my cats in there until i am able to take care of them again, and i went online to look up their ID. the pictures of them are absolutely awful, they look like mug shots. they are both calico and the lady at the desk wanted to argue with me that they weren’t. they also need to get adopted together and she said that’s probably not going to happen. i will be back to get them.
On 9/28/2019, I adopted a 9 w/o kitten. Her name at the shelter was Baby Ruth, but is now Missy. Long story short I have visited the shelter a few times looking for the perfect kitten, before I finally brought her home. Overall, it was always a good experience when I had came in to visit. However, the day I brought Missy home there was a rude guy who works at the front desk. He had an attitude when I asked about her shots and just wasnt friendly in general. Then arose an issue when he wouldnt accept my form of ID. Well, the ID I handed him was, infact a federally accepted form of identification. Anyways he made things difficult by telling me I couldnt adopt her and that broke my heart, because she is a good girl and deserves a loving home. (there was a family that adopted her and brought her back to the shelter the very next day). I didnt want that to happen to her ever again. So, I came back immediately... With a friend that had the form of ID, that he would accept. My advice is that if someone shows an extensive amount of interest on an animal that had previously been given up on; its the best thing for the animal to get adopted by that person. After all, the workers are there to help the animals be adopted into a loving home, right?
A great place to consider adopting a pet. It was surprisingly clean outside and in and the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. We came looking to adopt a rabbit and found Baldwin aka Trooper as our new member of the family.
My wife and I visited the Wake animal shelter to adopt a cat. We ended up adopting a wonderful white with tabby patches female named Tundra. We have had her for over a year now and she has become a beloved member of our family! We have 4 boys ages 4-15, and 3 other cats. Tundra fit right into our family, and we love her dearly! The staff was great! They were very patient with us and very informative. I highly recommend adopting an animal here and giving it a second chance at life!
Very quick to help lost pets find their home.
I gave them four stars despite my negative experience with the front desk lady. We tried to find our cat a few weeks ago (before they closed) and instead of being compassionate and understanding front desk lady accused us of lying and that the cat on their site was not ours and asking how could she have traveled this far- like idk lady people pick up lost pets and drop them off all the time! The other front desk lady actually APOLOGIZED for her coworkers attitude- like what? She shouldn’t have had to do that! I don’t have the lady’s name because I was almost in tears with our terrible experience but she had very long blonde hair and you would know by her negative energy alone when you see her. We watched her continue to be rude to more people as we were adopting pets. Hope they can find better people who are more aware of their presence in these situations. Overall our experience got better when we went to the second window but legit why should we have to do that. Employ better people!
Amazing shelter, wonderful staff, I would encourage people to adopt and not to shop! Also I fell in love with every single one
We went to adopt a dog we already knew we wanted, and upon waiting for him to come back from his walk, the shelter volunteer slammed the cage door in our face. When asked if we could see him, he said to go ask a shelter staff member, so we went to go find one. Once found, the staff member said he should not have said to find a staff member, he couldve done it. She then let us in, and said if we wanted to get out, we could let ourselves out. We had to learn to let ourselves out. We then found the same staff member and asked about seeing the dog in a yard and play with him (we werent sure what their policies were), and she literally replied, well, Im kind of busy right now. and walked away. They seem like they dont WANT their dogs to be adopted, so Silas was lucky we already fell in love with him. Now our interaction with Julie at the front desk (I think that was her name) was a pleasure and super nice, and so was the young lady who brought Silas out to us the day we came to officially pick him up. This shelter is understaffed, and the volunteers/ staff who do work there (not all, just some), are not even happy to be there. Great dogs, not great at adopting them out.
Gone multiple times looking for my missing cat. Staff is always willing to take me around to the new rescues to see if she’s back there.
Please adopt from here! The only reason its not 5 stars is because the staff is awful. I only met two volunteers who seemed to care, and offer somewhat knowledgeable information on the animals (cat or dog). These animals are sweet and innocent, and they definitely need forever homes! Please dont take your frustrations with the staff out on those poor babies. The facility itself is clean and the animals are obviously given proper care while there. I understand being an animal person and not a people person, but there needs to be some kind of balance here. It doesnt promote adoption if people go in and leave feeling unwanted.
I love WCAC! Yes, it is a kill shelter. They have to accept every animal brought to them. That includes animals that rightly should be euthanized, but their families are not able to take them to a vet. But the staff works so hard to get every adoptable animal any help they need using donations, fosters, volunteers, and rescue groups. They have been able to avoid euthanizing any adoptable animals for a very long time. This is a great place to find your next family member.
Great place to find your next best friend. They always have dogs and cats, even little critters sometimes. The building is off 64 a ways back, so if youre following GPS, and it seems like its taking you an odd direction, youre most likely going to the right place. The staff is pretty friendly, most of the time theyre just happy to have people visit the animals. They even encourage people to come and just play with them. Ive gotten 2 dogs from there and will go back again for my next one. Keep in mind though that puppies go very quickly. So if youre looking for something younger then youll want to get there early.
I have called in twice about the terrible situation at 238 Adam Lane in Wendell!! There are dogs there, and puppies getting loose doing damage to neighbors plants, they dont have but 1 doghouse for 1 of the dogs, and puppies have been weaned. Female, not spayed, keeps on having puppies. The dogs do not have water or food for 3-4 days while the POS owners are on vacation.Never is anything done and ACO will find any excuse NOT to deal with this unsavory situation.
Many cats and dogs and others in need of homes! Vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered for a great price this is the most cost effective way to adopt a new pet and you save a life in the process. Adopt and save a life you wont regret it!
After inquiring about an older sweet dog we were told he was transferred but not given any information as to where so we could go adopt him. There lack of info has risked an 11 year old dog of not being able to get adopted so nice they transferred him to another unknown facility due to overcrowding
Waste of time. No pets and you are stopped in the parking lot to make an appointment that the person on the phone has no available times.
I love this center. The staff is always willing to help. Their foster program is top notch and you feel like family here if you are a foster or volunteer.
Fantastic Shelter. The workers there are beyond incredible and care SO much for every animal. There foster program is amazing and I’m so lucky to be a part of it! Highly recommend adopting from them ♥️
Nice people that genuinely care about the animals. Everybody is always smiling & friendly when I go
Got my dog holly from here, she is so sweet and so nice they only thing is the poop is sometimes still stuck to the inside of the enclosure and the leash they give you is very bad for the dog
They put in so much effort to save the lives of animals. Yes, they are a kill shelter, but only do so when its the very last option and a very very small percentage of the animals they take in have to be unfortunately humanely euthanized when all other options are exhausted. Sometimes people bring their very old or very sick animals to be put down because they cant afford a vet to do it, and the shelter will still make sure there is nothing can do to help improve quality of life for longer. All local no kill shelters are either a no intake or selective intake shelter so they can choose the highly adoptive animals to save, which is still helpful and awesome, but WCAC has to take in ALL animals brought to them, no matter what. THEY DO AMAZING WORK!!! All my fur kids cane from them.
I took my mother in law there twice to adopt a dog. I also adopted 2 kittens there. Please consider adoption when bringing a pet into your home. Its easy to adopt from Wake County Animal Center, and your adoption opens a space for them to help another.
