I’ve been a member of this gym for years and it is one of the best since my community gym in Brooklyn. Joseph Garcia who left a very long 1-star review is totally wrong, and his review prompted me to write this. I can’t speak to free weights, as I’m not a gym rat like JG. I am a woman in her 50s trying to stay fit and healthy. The machines are of excellent quality and there is always a staff member available to help or give fitness advice. Everyone is friendly, and there is rarely a wait for entry, though I do make an effort, especially during covid, to go at less popular times of day. Everything is clean and well organized, and that may have to do with the lack of sticky beverages that, as Mr Garcia notes, are not allowed and therefore, as he also notes, haven’t had the opportunity to be spilled. Mr. G is also wrong about member demographics, as I see mostly adults and older adults. I suspect that Mr G was considering opening his own gym and is seeking to devalue the competition or is simply a disgruntled individual seeking revenge, as my experience bears no resemblance to his.

I like this gym, very much. It is clean, friendly, helpful. I have recently signed up for my second membership, it’s great to be back. My recommendation would be: more classes for those of us who work in the city, and definitely don’t work 9-5. I do appreciate how Mike treats his staff, seems employee-friendly, and as a business owner, I appreciate that (even if it means they’re closed early on certain holidays). Would love a family membership too.

The staff is wonderful and friendly. The place is very clean, huge parking lot, very friendly atmosphere and very comfortable place to workout at. Not to mention they have an amazing child care staff also with a huge CLEAN room for the children to play while patents get to workout at a very reasonable price!! There is everything to love here and not one bad thing can ever be said about this place. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!

Older staff at the desk are rude. Equipment is outdated. Super expensive. Classes are crowded and the hours are not good for anyone who doesn’t have a 9-5 schedule. If you do have a 9-5 schedule it get super crowded on machines. Beware the annual fee, too. They only had my partner sign the paperwork so I didn’t know it existed. It’s 2019, maybe they should go over all the paperwork with every adult instead of allowing one adult to sign for another. Seemed unprofessional and a bit illegal. Hopefully they will update their business practices.

Outstanding staff at all levels! Trainers are there to monitor what you do and motivate you to do the best you can. None of the staff is ever idle and each one makes you feel like they care about you. The gym is immaculate. Planet Fitness and Golds Gym do not even come close to the standards of Mike Artegas!

This gym is basically fine, the machines all tend to be kept in good condition and everything, but there are some major issues with it.I joined just for the pool. The pool, however, has a lot of rules that are enforced with varying degrees of consistency depending on the guard at the moment and often border on the absurd. One such rule Ive been told is they dont allow fins. I use short, training fins often to strengthen my legs and work on good form. Sometimes Im allowed to use them and others, Im not. They also dont have basic amenities all other gyms with pools Ive been to had: pull buoys, hand paddles, a towel service, and suit spinners (bathing suit dryers).Additionally, the inconsistent enforcement of often ludicrous rules is not just true of the pool. I once had a Gatorade or something like that and was not allowed to bring it into the gym - no drinks with dye allowed, is what I was told. (If memory serves correctly, they were selling Gatorade with dye at the time, but I might be wrong on that.)They lack basic amenities, as Ive mentioned above. They also dont keep scales in the locker rooms. I asked about that after I joined and they told me that they way I look and how my clothes feel should be enough. Sorry, no, that is a basic piece of equipment at a gym because they are usually more accurate there than home scales. The membership fees are fairly high for the area, but they seem to get away with it because they offer one of the only indoor pool options in a large radius. The fee to bring a guest is HUGE: $15/person for the day, and no free guest passes EVER.The class schedule is difficult to make use of if you work 9-5 and they close the gym on nearly every federal holiday.About half the staff are very friendly and the other half very rude. They do have some incredible yoga instructors, though.Overall, Id skip this place unless you really desperately need a pool and cant make the trip to a farther location.

The gym is ok. It they are missing some key elements for someone being serious about fitness. Trying to locate a scale I was informed that they do not have a scale while it isnt a huge deal this is the only gym I have ever been to without a scale. Some of the freeweights are pretty beat up but they work fine. The equipment is pretty dated for some of the machines. The classes are decent as well. Over all Id say the gym is ok but could use some minor improvements.

Ive been an avid gym goer and self proclaimed fitness junkie for a long time Ive been to every kind of gym. I spent two years studying personal training. Ive been to multiple planet fitnesses, gold gyms, CrossFit gyms, family run gyms, and power lifters gyms. A gym culture is really important for people and it really determines if you wanna stay Ive been in this gym half a year. Its awful. You have much better choices in the area if you look or are willing to drive. So lets start with the gym cultureThe people are primarily college age. This isnt bad issue is none and I mean almost all, dont re-rack weights or place them in there correct spots. 40 pound dumbbells go in the 40 pound spot. Why do I have to search for it like Marco Polo in the desert to do my set. You have employees there you either need to encourage members to re rack weights or have staff fix the place. Same goes for the weight plates might I add. Why do I need to dig through the 5s and 25s to reach the 35s. Its not extra exercise its frustrating. I went to grade school I know how to match shapes whats going on here. This is annoying but the people are also just rude.Very stuffy its hard for me to strike that against the gym but if you go to a lot of gyms and you notice the members act differently at each. Youll understand what I mean. Say what you will about planet fitness members, at those gyms people tend to be quiet keep to themselves. Go to a family run gym or powerlifter gym. Everyone is kind and helpful. A positive community that encourages fitness. Mike Arteagas does the opposite. This is another pet peeve but card swipes for gym entry are the most efficient for gyms at the size of Mikes. Its a big box gym why do I have to give the receptionist my name. Some members have a number code but I never got that. Check in is slow and some days I and others dont want to talk to people. I would take anything over verbal check in. And you could cut down on staff because it really seems like they dont do much.Lets move onto gym rules. Gyms have written etiquette as well now this is just a dumb rule that boggles the mind but a lot of serious people go to Mikes many of them drink things like pre-workout and post. Why am I only allowed to bring water in. I shouldnt have to smuggle in pre-workout like Im Tony Montana so no employee will have to walk over to me and tell me not to drink that. Why is this rule in place? people still drink things that arent water all the time. It cant be due too spills. Ive never seen anything spilt there. Most of the gym is hard flooring. If someone does make an obscene mess why wouldnt they just be charged anyway. The reason youd go to Mikes is convenience and its pool. The gym is too small for the amount of people that go there they are expanding but I highly doubt thatll change anything. If you want a good gym with a pool go to All sport. Its right down 55. If you want a big gym go to golds. If you want to be left alone and/or feel welcome go to Planet fitness or a family run gym. If you just walk on a treadmill go to planet fitness. If you want classes go to golds. Mike doesnt offer anything unique it is a messy poorly run gym full of charmingly annoying people. Save your money for a gym thatll help you I can tell you right now Mike Arteagas is not that gym.

Horrible experience here. I was staying at a hotel in Highland that had passes to the express location located next door. I said I wanted to take a group ex class, and was told Id have no problem paying an entrance fee to the Poughkeepsie location. When I arrived for the class, I was made to wait at the front desk for 25 minutes while they figured out which side of their ass faced the sun (they were all very nice), only to be told that they didnt offer day passes, even at $30+, would I like a membership? No, Im visiting the area from out of town for the weekend so I wouldnt like a membership. It was a terrible experience, compounded by the waiting and no one seeming to know what they were doing. Fortunately Crunch Poughkeepsie down the road was able to accommodate me with AMAZING group ex instructors & workout area. Id rhighly ecommend them to anyone visiting the area- do NOT go to Mike Arteagas.

Terrible place. Way too many rules, especially the rules made up by the attendant at the pool. To watch TV on a treadmill you have to have an IPOD? Cmon. They also do not follow their own rules, as babysitting at the pool is also done by the attendant there. Go to Planet Fitness instead ( unless you are desperate for a pool ).
