Update after purchasing (9-21-2020)I recently purchased a Hustler XD and it exceeds my expectations. Based on the previous model it has improved on the hydrostatic trans mounts, which are now much beefier. The deck shute has no obstructions and blows out grass debris clog-free. The spindle covers are now vented, allowing easy blowout of grass clippings. The deck height adjustment is now more in line with pro models and comes in 1/4 inch adjustments and are identified by actual height instead of cryptic letters.In addition to the whole team at Land and Coates has bent over backward to provide a professional and satisfying sales experience. As long as the service is as good as what Ive seen so far theyll have a customer for life.9-15-2020I spoke with Tyler today about several homeowners options for a new zero turn mower. This young man is knowledgeable and enthusiastic representing the brands they carry as well as the benefits of purchasing from Land and Coates. I appreciated my time with him and will be back tomorrow to make a purchase. It was refreshing to deal with a salesman like Tyler. He is definitely an asset for his company as well as for the Hustler and Toro brands of zero turn mowers.

Ive been here before to purchase a new gas blower, I have had it for about 16 months and I love it, of course I use there pre made gas only & no problems. So I went back to the store when it was time for me to buy a new lawn mower, which I purchased a hustler DASH XD Zero turn mower and once again I love it, I also dropped off my Husqvarna self propelled to be worked on. I called for for a lawn mower repair, I was told that they were really backed up, it would be over a month before it would be serviced... Ive heard stories about this place that I cant confirm nor deny... I Took my riding mower to another location, (well it was picked up), for repairs, and even though they were seriously back up, they made the repair(s) on my riding mower and brought it back the day after it was dropped off (2 day service) they get my 5 stars!
I took our weed eater in because the cord kept breaking and wanted to find out what was wrong. Come to find out it was operator error. We were winding the cord wrong. The gentlemen politely showed me how to wind the cord properly and he didn’t even charge me for the new cord he put in. So thankful! It is nice to know, there are since good people and good businesses that are there to help!
Instead of just taking my broke mower off my hands, the staff took the time to listen to what i had done to troubleshoot it and just advised me on a common fail part i had cleaned and thought was fine. I order the part from them and got it running that day. Loved the honesty and courtesy provided by the staff. Would recommend them in the future.
All of the staff are professional,courteous, and knowledgeable. They go out of their way to make sure you have what you need. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them.

Great people are the foundation of any organization and this location is staffed by superb individuals on every level Ive encountered. I recently had a zero turn mower that did not run picked up from my home. The delivery driver showed up when promised,which is expected, but what really impressed me is the care he took not to damage my lawn or gate leading to my backyard. If youve had experience with a zero turn that does not run, then you appreciate all the effort it takes to push it and the procedure necessary to disconnect the drive wheels. Land and Coates repaired it correctly and the price was far below what I expected. The driver returned it my home and again : no damage to my lawn! I also had an issue with the cutting head on my string trimmer. Since I had such a great experience with Land and Coates, they were my first choice to repair it. Walked in, told them the problem and within 15 mins, the problem was solved. I asked for the price of the repair and the gentlemen behind the counter informed me No charge, sir. For future repairs or purchases of any lawn maintenance equipment, Land And Coates is my first choice. Job well done!

The gentlemen there troubleshot it on the spot and got it working again. The woman at the front was very friendly, helpful, and professional. Could not get my chain saw started after letting it sit up for a couple of years. Took it by to drop it off for repair. The repair technician worked with it for at least 15 minutes and got it running. Didnt charge a penny.

Walked in with my Husqvarna chainsaw that I couldnt get the cover back on after changing the chain (been trying for months). They educated me on the brake inside the cover that had to be released to put the cover back on, then they fixed it for me. Absolutely thrilled to have my chainsaw back in working order. Iand and coats in Portsmouth is an awesome place,I bought a zero turn lawn mower and salesman went through the process with me and was very professional. Then took chainsaw in for work to be done. I talked to Jed and he was great and professional as well as explaining things to me about saw. Service was excellent and they make you feel right at home. I will go to them for all my needs. I highly recommend this place. I brought my push mower blade in to get sharpened and the manager personally took care of it right away even though the guy who normally sharpens the blades was busy. Everyone I talked with was super friendly and helpful, but the manager went above and beyond and to my surprise really blessed me in a big way. Took some mower blades to be sharpened in the summer of 2018. The Service Technician said they looked fine; didnt need sharpening. What a refreshing dose of honesty in a world where there seems to be so little of it! And just before Christmas, they sharpened my blades (while I waited) and INSTEAD OF CHARGING ME, just said Merry Christmas. Wow...Thanks, Land & Coates!
Went in to store on Friday, and was helped with great customer service. I purchased the equipment I needed. Store Manager was incredibly inciteful about equipment that I purchased. He needs a raise. He also gave service with a smile. That is a rare thing these days. Overall Im very pleased with my experience in this establishment. They have a return customer in me.

After several encounters with Land & Coates-Portsmouth at a professional level over the past two years, I can honestly say that their service, professionalism and abilities to inform me of new equipment updates and parts supplies is of a nature that is excellent and refreshing whereas I look forward to future endeavors with this team. My current encounter with Kimberly Harrell, Sales Rep., was another professionally directed purchase of equipment by myself especially due to the fact that I am the President/CEO of Barnes & Sons Maintenance & Repairs.
I called for help with my electric mower (I got stuck trying to do home maintenance) which is not regularly carried by local folks. Tracy asked me to come right up and he would do what he could. He met me at the curb, took the mower and removed the blade and sharpened it. So courteous and attentive. Thank you for your assistance.
Called and asked if they serviced Stihl trimmers. Jedd stated they did. I brought the trimmer in and described the issue I was experiencing (trimmer would not start). Tracy helped right away and took a look at the trimmer. After a quick inspection of the spark plug and its associated wire, Tracy started it up. Success! And to top it off, Tracy stated to me “no charge.” What a great surprise! I fully expected to spend some money to repair my trimmer but Tracy and Jedd went above and beyond in getting my trimmer back up and running. Great service and a pleasure to deal with! I purchased my hustler raptor from Lowes in Suffolk, had PTO failure and Portsmouth land&coates picked up my machine registered and repair it under warranty. The mower was delivered to with new PTO and motor at no cost to me. Tracy and his staff did a outstanding job. Wow!! Took my gas blower into Land and Coates - Portsmouth ( Churchland) location because it wouldn’t start. I had not used it for several months. Tyler took it to the back room immediately and cleaned the carb and got it working properly in about 5 minutes. He said it had bad gas from sitting and he Reccommended a great product called TruFuel It is premixed in a can and I will never have the carb gunk up from non use even if it sits unused. He did not charge me and I was so impressed that they fixed my problem so fast and now I’m back in business 👍Thanks Tyler for your Great Service and I will continue to buy my Lawn equipment from Land & Coates :)Mrs. Boone
Bought a Honda HRR216 push mower and Stihl Trimmer. Outstanding customer service from everyone in the store. The mower would not fit in my Jeep so they offered to deliver it to my house same day. Will be back in the future. Would recommend over the big box stores any day!

Stopped in 8/20 about 3 pm to ask if they might have eyelets for a string trimmer. What brand? he asked. Cub Cadet. Nope. You dont have any kind of universal repair parts? Exact quote: The only thing we have universal is gas line and pull cord. Okay...not interested is generic service. Got it. My two cents....if you cant help with small things today, you wont be on my list for a major purchase either. Customer service is customer service. If you cant be bothered to get off the counter stool, thats an indicator. I hope brick and mortar proprietors dont wonder why internet sales is booming.

The Portsmouth Land and Coates appears to be disorganized in the fashion they handle customers. I have been there a few times and some employees appear to attempt to give a good service, but others seem as if they dont care if you buy or not at this particular store. The last time I was there I needed to purchase a trimmer, but no one was able to help so I had to leave and pursue my purchase at a different location. Customer service needs a lot of improvements.
Unprofessional. If your a business and need something done they will not update you on the progress of your equipment. If you buy a piece of equipment and it has a recall they will not inform you. Very displeased with the unprofessionalism and wouldnt recommend.
Has everything you need to fix and repair your mower. I wouldnt say its wholesale price, but its better than looking for hours in stores for a part.
We had a problem with our 60 inch zero turn Toro mower. We had a broken mower deck belt and were in need of new blades.The belt broke on Friday and we had baseball and football games the next week and the fields needed to be mowed. We call Jedd at the Portsmouth store and he immediately help us with our problem. We were back on our mower Tuesday and our games went on without a hitch.I have always dealt with the Portsmouth store. They are always helpful, courteous, and professional... I have been going to Land & Coates in Portsmouth for about 5 years now. They are not your low-cost leader, and they do not try to be. They sell good, better than consumer grade equipment and have knowledgeable staff to help guide your decision making, and to support you after the sale. Recently I had them perform a repair on my weed eater that I think they only charged me parts for. When a similar problem arose a couple weeks later, they not only fixed it for free, but offered me a loaner in the meantime. They make it real hard to go anywhere else. Thanks for great service guys!
I had my Zero Turn tune up, what a blessing, friendly staff and great service, and pick up and delivery from my house.
I took a Stihl BR420 backpack blower in for repairs. It would not start or run without extraordinary effort. I suggested to the technician that it was the carburetor, as I had replaced the fuel filter, ignition coil, spark plug and air filter. After three separate visits over six weeks and $235, my blower now works after they installed a new carburetor. I am disappointed that it took that long and that much money to fix a blower with a relatively simple problem. I would not recommend Land and Coates for small engine repairs.
As a first-time customer, I brought my Toro push mower to Land & Coates this afternoon with what I thought was a broken throttle handle. Tracy helped me lift the mower from the truck, I showed him the piece that had fallen off, and 30 seconds later he had the mechanism put back together. No charge, and he cheerfully helped me lift the mower back into the truck. Hard to beat customer service like that.

Glad to know I can use this location instead of driving to the location in Chesapeake because the lack of customer service at the Portsmouth location kept me from ever coming back. Much better experience than two years ago, thats for certain.

On 01 April 2017, bought commercial Honda Lawnmower & Stihl Weed Trimmer with assistance of Mike (courteous & knowledgeable sales associate). On 17 April 2017, I needed a repair of my weed trimmer due to operator error. At 8:00 am, I dropped off the trimmer for repairs. Andy & Jed at service desk gave a thorough explanation of possible issues with my equipment. Furthermore, they reviewed end user procedures and cautions for appropriate operation of the trimmer. At 2:00 pm on the same day, my weed trimmer was returned for a quick turn around.I recommend Land & Coates Portsmouth, VA location for purchase of, service and repair of quality landscaping equipment. Also, enjoyed a friendly morning conversation with Jim, employee & ODU alumnus.
