Neil Kelly is a spectacular company to work with! They torn down then put in a brand new kitchen that is worthy of a high-end magazine. I have to list my HUGE KUDOS to the whole team: Erika Altenhofen, my designer extraordinaire who not only listened to my vision, was extremely professional, yet personable, and a very talented designer. So much fun to work with! Brian Silver, my project manager, whom I was very lucky to drive the amazing team, keep everything on schedule, check up on our progress, make corrections where needed, and finish EARLY! Vladimer and Nadia, who not only did all the difficult demo but installed all the beautiful cabinets and made sure everything was done to perfection. And they kept everything clean and in order. Steve, Wade and Fuzz who did lots of carpentry and finishing work and seamlessly picked up the baton and ran with it. All the subs that they hired - the painters and floor installers - were top notch and so very professional. The Neil Kelly team was such a great choice and I did not have to manage anything, which is what I wanted. You get what you pay for and I highly recommend everyone to consider them as they are worth every penny. Im sure Ill do another project with them - bathroom and solar. Thank you!

I went through Neil Kelly for a new roof, concrete walkway, and concrete driveway pad. Excellent work! They were timely, fast, and produced an excellent finished product. Jason was amazing getting our home quoted with material options and lining everything out, even made a digital 3D model of our home after taking measurements to see what different roofing would look like! Would recommend to anyone needing to update their home!

We had a very positive experience working with Neil Kelly Company on our 1910 farmhouse kitchen remodel. From our initial meeting with Barbara Miller, Design Consultant, we felt heard. She worked within our budget and with our abilities. Difficult dishwasher removal & installation. The first crew delivered the machine but were not able to remove the old machine because of a flooring issue. It was a difficult situation requiring special skills. We now had a new machine sitting in the middle of our kitchen.Michael Johnson, project manager, asked BRUCE to come on Sunday morning, his day of off, to fix the problem. With his skills, patience and determination Bruce was able to remove the old dishwasher. The installation crew returned early the next day to complete the removal and installation project. In addition to his skills BRUCE was a gentleman with a great sense of humor. Bruce worked without making a lot of noise. He was working on the 12th floor of a condominium, on a Sunday morning. Our neighbors were not disturbed.Working with Michael Johnson as project manager was a pleasant experience. He stayed on top of the job. He went above and beyond the service anyone would expect from a top notch company like Neil Kelly.

We hired Neil Kelly (at the recommendation of Mark Powers of Mark Powers painting - thank you, Mark!!) to help us create two home offices with barn doors out of existing space in our house. The job entailed installation of two new walls (with framing and sound insulation), as well as hanging drywall and installation of two barn doors. Brendan Kerg helped us plan the job and offered some great suggestions that left us with results even better than expected! Scheduling was super easy, payment was super easy and we could not be happier! They did a fantastic job and were a joy to work with all along the way, highly recommend the team at Neil Kelly!

Hired Neil Kelly to replace two incorrectly installed and leaky basement windows; I used their handyman service and worked with Casey Deck as the estimator/supervisor. He did a great job of explaining exactly what they would do and why they would do it, and really took the time to work through all my concerns. I came away from the estimation process feeling confident theyd get the job done right. The installer (Ive forgotten their name, unfortunately) was fantastic: I had prepped the area in a way that I thought would keep things clean, and the installer realized I had definitely not done enough, and very thoroughly readied the space before doing the install. Im glad they did, everything wouldve been covered in dust with the prep I had done. They also did an excellent job of cleaning up afterward, and the work is exceptionally solid. Its been some months since, and some very heavy rain, and I can happily say: no more leaky windows! Neil Kelly did a great job and Ill go to them first for my next project, without hesitation.

I had my roof replaced on my home on what might have been the hottest week in 2020. The crew was so professional and quick, leaving very little evidence that they were even there at the end of the day. Tygh Tarlton came by each evening after they were done and checked their work; and when he did find something that he didn’t think looked how it should, he made sure it was fixed the following day. I got a lot of estimates before making a decision, and while Neil Kelly was on the higher side on price, their work and customer service far exceeded my expectations. I know that when I am ready for my next renovation, I will be using Tygh and Neil Kelly. Thank you!

They are one of the very few companies deemed an essential service that takes their employees use of PPE, gloves and disinfectant seriously. And I am thankful. It made me feel comfortable having a contractor in my house. Marcus came to my home yesterday to do a simple electrical job. He wore a mask and gloves at all times, and had wipes and a bottle of Lysol with him. He wiped down everything he touched with Lysol after he finished the work. Even the last door handle he touched. I wouldnt even give this company one star! One year ago we began a very expensive remodel of full kitchen, two full baths, one half bath, and upgrades to laundry room. It was supposed to be a 3 - 4 month project. We ignored bad reviews and went with Neil Kelly because they are local, they care about community, etc., etc. It started out well but when it went bad it went horribly bad. These were not small things one expects, they were HUGE. We had a flood from the upstairs bath through the ceiling to the new kitchen, a shower glass door that literally exploded and could have killed one of us, plumbing mistakes that required having to cut a large hole in a ceiling of a room that shouldnt have been touched, bad tile, bad painting, shower pan surface that were still dealing with, orders that had to be redone and redone and redone until it was correct. Every time something else happened they said weve never seen anything like this. Not one time during the all the months of hell we had to deal with this did an owner or upper management person contact us. Not once to this day. We just received our final invoice, one year after construction began, and with that not one cent of a discount which we had requested. You will sign away your life and they have you over a barrel leaving you no recourse and this is after paying a huge premium for their supposed great work and on-time completion rate. It doesnt matter if its 6-9 months after their promised completion date or that anything that could go wrong, went wrong. With our final invoice we got weve completed our contractual obligations. Well, it was not done well and it was not done honorably and wed give anything to go back in time and choose another company, ANY other company could not have been this bad, or this expensive. Listen to the bad reviews, they have been written for a very good reason, as we so sadly learned.

I emailed him back asking why it came in so much higher. A full week later he wrote me back explaining it would end up being more work that originally anticipated. I wrote him back telling him Id like to just move forward with the small job. Here I am, now 3 weeks later, with NO communication back from them. If you dont want the job, at least tell me that. After the money fell through of course you have to get something done or your throwing away $2500!!! dollars. So they worked out a bid for $15,000!!! to replace the front door and paint the living room(10 x 20) and entry(5 x 5) and fix an 6 x 6 patch in the living room. Since she had already obtained a bid the year before to do the front door ($9600). That would leave $5400!!! to fix a 6 x6 patch and paint the living room and entry. Now since Ive been around this industry my whole life the most for the patch is probably $1000 so that leaves $4400!!! to paint the living room and entry. WOW!!! Oh and heres the clincher since they wanted $2241 to skim coat those walls(also way over priced, that would be $7641!!! to paint a living room and entry). They worked out that she would patch the walls for them. Anybody that knows anything about this knows that this is most of the work. So in the end she will do the time consuming part of the work and they will fix a little patch and what about 20-30 hours for $5400!!!. WOW!!! Must be nice to be a Corporation. Oh and on top of that they didnt install front door. Its a subcontractor. Im sure they got a nice chunk of that for his new green cabin on Mt. Hood and all the shareholders for there boat payment.

We just finished our full kitchen remodel with Joel Fraley (designer) and John Finn (project manager) and could not be more pleased with the experience and the final product.Joel was exceptional at translating our desires into a constructable design. And John was top notch at setting a schedule and keeping the construction on track and on time. I followed the project in person every day, and our carpenter Jamie was skilled and meticulous at getting things installed correctly. All of the subcontractors did their work to a very high standard as well. On the whole we could not be happier with our new kitchen. Now if we can just find some additional funds to remodel a bathroom or two...

Designers Matt Sipes and Tessa Isett at the Alberta St office in North Portland were great to work with for our first floor renovation. We had a wall removed between our living room and kitchen, which opened up the space. They designed new lighting and matched the flooring to seamlessly turn 2 rooms into 1 large open space which truly fits our lifestyle and the way we entertain guests. To remove the wall, some structural work was also needed. The Neil Kelly team painstakingly took all the steps necessary to ensure the new space is more than structurally sound! We could have never achieved our vision for the new space without Matt and Tessa!

Well we hired one of their HVAC guys name Brice Riley to install our HVAC systems back in April. Brice shows up on a Saturday in Neil Kelly van. We purchased our own equipment from a wholesaler which saved us a lot of money. All Brice had to do was set the two units, install refrigerant lines and charge them. Sound simple. We just received power yesterday and was able to test them. Bad news. The units start but do not cool. As I looked more in detail I believe this guy either did not charge them or the copper lines he installed leaked. So now we are trying to get a hold of their office. No on call people I guess. And it is 100 degrees outside.

We turned a small bedroom into a big bathroom. This job required permits, and adding brand new plumbing from the second floor to the basement in a 130 year old house with lathe and plaster ceilings and walls, among other challenges. Working with Neil Kelly Company, Matt Sipes, Tessa, Phillippe and their team was a great experience. The work they did was impeccable. They were very responsive to our requests, and at the end of each day, left the work area clean and ready for the next steps. We absolutely love the finished bathroom: it is totally modern in function, but in design, it is appropriate to our old house. This additional bathroom has really transformed our home.

We had moisture damage in our laundry room and it needed a complete renovation. Thomas from Neil kelly did a terrific job of tearing out walls and floor and rebuilding it. All of the workers did their work well and cleaned up after themselves each day. We are very pleased with our new laundry room. The work got done as scheduled and we would call Neil kelly again.

Irie & Miguel were professional & conscientious as they guided me and helped me organize & understand the step by step process in my bathroom project: which included converting the tub into a shower/tub, new water heater, new toilet, electrical outlets, improved ceiling lights & a fabulous dehumidifier system. On delivery, they noted defects in the original stone wall & returned it and ordered from another company. The the Granite wall is gorgeous. Every thing I requested was done efficiently & I didnt have to repeat myself or shadow them to assure that my requests were granted. All their contractors were on time, efficient, neat and easy to obtain information on what they were doing. I could go on but this company is a keeper . They left me feeling confident that all the work was done properly & if there is a problem, I can contact them without resistance & excuses. With much gratitude - Jill Nathman

We couldnt have been happier with the work that Neil Kelly and our project manager, Chad Ruhoff, did at our house. It was a major project: we had Neil Kelly install a second bathroom upstairs; split a large upstairs room into two kids bedrooms; install new windows; add earthquake retrofitting; put in insulation throughout; install a tankless water heater; and strip and repaint a kitchen cabinet. Thanks to Chads outstanding guidance and management, the entire project was completed, on time, without a hitch. Chad was very helpful and engaged from the first stages of planning all the way through the end, making sure that every small detail was taken care of. He was always easily reached (in-person meetings, phone, text, email), and he also kept us constantly informed of the progress. We found that it was incredibly helpful to have everything, from the first design ideas to the finishing touches, directed and managed through a single company and a single project manager. The quality of the work was very high, and everything looks and works great. It was clear from the start that Chad cared about the project and wanted the result to be as good as it could be. We highly recommend Neil Kelly and Chad Ruhoff, and would happily use the team again for a future project. Thank you!

25OCT2018 UPDATE - I am now selling the house I had Neil Kelly work on. The buyers inspection and due diligence has uncovered the fact that Neil Kelly did not get all the necessary permits and did not upgrade the electrical panel to handle the additional current required by the A/C they installed. So, not only did Neil Kelly leave my family exposed to the risk of an electrical fire, they also have made it difficult for me to sell my house. I intend to file a law suit against Neil Kelly. I recommend you avoid doing business with Neil Kelly.27OCT2018 FURTHER UPDATE After being fully apprised of the situation described above, Neil Kelly refuses to take responsibility and says, essentially go ahead and sue us, our clever contract says we arent responsible.Unresponsive. We have had 3 wonderful experiences over the years using Neil Kelly Co for major renovations of an old house and wouldnt hesitate to do so again or to recommend them without qualification. They do a thorough, creative and thoughtful job in the design phase, provide a detailed plan for exactly what work will be done when, anticipate most issues so that there are few change orders, and they do this almost to the day on their projected time frame. While it may seem that they are slightly more expensive than many competitors, it is worth it because of the quality of the work, reliability, few change orders to add expense and their overall good relationships with their subs. They make it all happen with only the necessary disruption to the homeowner. Therese DuBravac and Tony Butchart were a perfect team!

We had great service and advice from Neil Kelly designer, Sandi Erdman, whom we met at one of Neil Kellys free info sessions in Lake Oswego. She helped advise, select and order countertop and back splash material, and provided detailed plans for an upgrade to our 20-year old kitchen. The work crew was also excellent. We always knew what was happening and when. Questions answered, minor issues that cropped up handled with out any complaint or push back. Highly recommend. All the Neil Kelly folks and their subcontractors (plumbing, electrical, tile, granite) were a pleasure to work with. Worth the money!

We had Neil Kelly-Mr. Sun Solar install a PV solar system. We have an older home that required a great deal of work just to get it ready for panels. Although we had delays getting to the installation process, once the construction work started there was a crew here every day that impressed us with their ability, communications, and cheerful attitude. This cheerful attitude continued even through the painful slog through the attic spaces doing prep work, and there wasnt a moment when any person on the crew wasnt helpful or willing to listen or answer questions. The attention to cleanliness was amazing; tarps would be rolled out over the floors, or booties would come on and off as they went in and out. And, out came the vacuum at the end of the day!We chose Neil Kelly because of their reputation, not the cost. And due to our type of house complexity, when it was all said and done, this was the best choice we could have made.Every day now I look at the computer screen and watch the graph of the electricity production!Rob Hertert

I have been a client of Neil Kelly for many years. I first had them do work for me in the 1990s through a rep named Pat Murray. Last year I had a fairly large project that needed to be done on my house. I wanted to convert my garage from a two door to a single door. I also needed to have the concrete slab redone, adding rebar underneath it. The driveway leading down to my house needed help too. Then the house also needed an exterior paint job. When assessing my house, my new rep, Tom Doberstein, noticed paneling on the south side of my house was rotting away. So they also replaced that and put in a new cross two by four with flashing to keep the rain out. They are about to add that to another one higher up this summer. This summer I needed a new roof and I hired them to oversee that task. They are also taking care of a few little tasks inside my house. I have found Tom to be very easy to work with and attentive to the smallest details. They seem to finish work in a timely manner but are going to put in extra time and effort if the job requires. Neil Kelly is not a cheap outfit. You will pay a certain price to have them do your job. But you will be assured the job will be done correctly and in good taste. So if you are looking for a reliable contractor to handle your home repairs and remodeling, you could do a lot worse than going with Neil Kelly. And I can recommend Tom Doberstein to you as an upright person to deal with.

Therese DuBravac, lead interior designer, and Tony Sage, lead project manager, both of which of Neil Kelly Company of Portland, Oregon, turn a condominium unit, to a modern light and airy a pied-à-terre, from something that looked like a drug den out of My Own Private Idaho. From her initial comments upon first visiting the unit, “what wouldn’t you do?”, flows a kitchen comprising cabinets in American Walnut finished in a fermented soot-based ink that is then charred in the ancient Japanese practice “shou sugi ban.” Hidden behind the cabinet doors that are actuated by metallic grey handles that seemed to have been wrought from chipped sword pieces are European top-line appliances including a Miele clothing washer that can hand wash something as delicate as an Hermès scarf, to a Miele clothing dryer that communicates moisture away from the condominium unit, to a slim Liebherr refrigerator, and a silent Miele dishwasher next to which you can sleep without bother and after which it opens its door when finished to ease your morning’s routines, as well as a Bertazzoni kitchen range and oven that is elegantly Italian.Topping the bottom cabinets and over the appliances is a glacially white counter that finished in a waterfall style to cap the side of the last cabinet. The backsplash is made of white clear glass which provides a brilliant otherworldly illumination when the under-cabinet lights are turned on.Nearby the kitchen is a woolly beige Phillip Stark’s My World sofa lounges that are long in the legs so that one can easily slip into a day slumber if needed or reached over to a “box” made from white untrained oak for a cup of expresso. Heavy screens made from rattan seclude those that rest on the Phillip Stark’s My World sofa lounges and are so immovable except in an earthquake that books can rest against it to form a small personal library. The lounges, each resembling a Japanese bedroll and sleeping accoutrements that are blown up.A flat screen television which can be pulled well away from the Wall is mounted on top of a Walnut cabinet whose front comprises series of parallel Walnut longitudinal slats and in which electronic equipment can be stored and breathed and through which facilitating remote commands. All wall colors are variations of gray albeit the wall color of the kitchen/living room approaches that of an early Summer morning on Mt. Tabor whereas the master bedroom the color of an angry storm in November at Seaside coast.Access to both the master closet and the bathroom is located in the master bedroom but unlike the moodiness of the bedroom the walls of both the master closet and the bathroom are in brilliant white.A hidden feature of the closet located in the Raumplus sliding door that separates it from the bedroom is a mirror that comprises the entire sliding door facing the closet. The bathroom was designed twice by Therese and executed twice by Tony. The first time despite what was on paper was off in practice. Now, instead of an aging bathtub, a modern glass enclosed shower with a bench cover in soft white marble with grey veins covered the walls to the floor. Both a rain-style shower head as well as a handheld wand pour water pleasingly. A beautiful white Japanese toilet/bidet resembling a great piece of asymmetrical pottery in a temple has an A.I. that knows when to open its lid and flushed debris away. The vanity has a white ceramic top and drawers in Walnut. But when the bathroom lights are turned off, there are lights under the vanity to illuminate the bathroom as if it is an otherworldly place. As I entered from the rain-soaked Portland into my unit a day this Spring, the rainwater slided from my coat and dripped onto the tiles made from river rocks forming the mud area, I came home thanks to Neil Kelly and its team of local artisans.

A little over a year ago the Neil Kelly team completed a full remodel on my kitchen. I can honestly say that it was one of the most positive remodeling experiences I’ve ever had.Our home was purchased new in 1997 so after 20 years it was in dire need of help. Someone had mentioned to my husband that Neil Kelly stands behind their work. That was especially important as I considered this to be a huge investment in our home.We walked into the showroom in North Portland and a consultant let us browse and dream a bit.A week later I had an appointment with Barbara Miller of Neil Kelly. (Fortunately they have a Westside showroom as well off of Bangy Road.)After several appointments we had my wish list on paper. : new cupboards, cupboard and drawer enhancements, tile, ceiling fan, sink, outlet placement, appliances, hideaway for hubbys iPad...and the list goes on.We were given a schedule and you know the most amazing part? They stuck to it.Between November 24 and December 23, 2016 the crew had completed demo and given me a new kitchen. By January 15 all of the little things were completed and the crew was out.Every time I walk into my kitchen I get a satisfied feeling of a job well done. It’s a joy to look at and it makes preparing food a pleasure.A year later we had a small problem with a faucet. It was covered by the warranty and they were out quickly to replace.Did I mention that while the carpenters were here working we got a few more ideas? We ended up with a new staircase in our garage and shelves in our bathroom.Thank you Neil Kelly and your wonderful, ever professional staff :Barbara MillerHollyBrianJohnVladimir

Though our 1903 Victorian home remodel project is not quite complete (we still have a few rooms to tackle), it is past time for us to share what a magnificent job Neil Kelly Company (NK) has done for us.From rebuilding and expanding our back porch, to adding A/C (and piping heat and A/C to our upstairs bedrooms), to creating a beautiful upstairs bathroom (where there was none before), the quality of the work, the communications with their staff, the level of responsibility demonstrated by craftspeople and project manager, and the value/price quotient, have been outstanding. The pièce de résistance, completed just in time for holiday entertaining, has been our lovely, and now so very useful, kitchen remodel. Janel Campbell, the NK designer who has been the captain of our project, not only had to select and coordinate all our preferred kitchen materials and suppliers, she also had to satisfy (navigate? mediate?) the various design opinions put forth by our family members. (For her trouble, Janel was rewarded with the prestigious 2017 Oregon Home Magazine, Structure and Style Award for our kitchen remodel.) Quite simply, Neil Kelly’s the best!Thank you Janel and Neil Kelly Company

My wife and I recently downsized from an older home with lots of charm in NE Portland to a newer home in SW Portland with more creature comforts but less charm. We knew we would eventually want to make the place our own by remodeling the first floor and installing a new kitchen. After several months of searching for the right designer, my wife attended a Neil Kelly seminar and came home raving about the presenter, Joel Fraley. So we invited him over, walked him through the house and began hashing out ideas. He had some great suggestions, like replacing our kitchen island with a peninsula to open up working space. No detail was too big or too small. We talked everything from counter tops and cabinets to light fixtures to hardwood floors. So we hired him and never looked back. After settling on the design, Joel introduced us to Paul Louis, our Project Manager. We had a meeting where they explained the logistics of demolition and construction. We went over the contract in detail so there were no surprises. And Paul drafted a ten-week project schedule so we would know what to expect and when. This was a pretty big job involving all the trades: plumbing, mechanical, electrical, tile, paint and carpentry. Every day we had someone show up at the house ready to go to work. I was amazed at how well they were able to stick to the schedule, even after my wife decided three weeks into the project that she wanted the powder room remodeled as well. The tradesmen and women were always polite and fun to talk to. They did a great job cleaning up after themselves.Ten weeks to the day, the job was finished. Living through a remodel wasnt particularly pleasant, but in the end it was more than worth it. Our first floor has been done to our taste and we finally have our gourmet kitchen. We could not be more pleased, and I highly recommend Neil Kelly in general and Joel Fraley and Paul Louis in particular if youre considering a home remodel.

We just finished a remodel with Joel Fraley and Paul Louis of Neil Kelly Co. and we couldnt be happier. Joel really took time during the design process to listen, understand the changes we wanted, and make suggestions. We also really appreciated that he narrowed details down to a a handful of options once he got a handle on our taste, so that we didnt have to sift through hundreds of choices.During the project itself, an addition expanding our dining room, Paul checked in with us regularly and was there in case we had questions, but otherwise managed all of the communication with the subs. The jobsite was kept very neat and clean with minimal interruption to our daily lives, the project was finished on schedule and on budget, and were thrilled with the results. As busy working parents, this was exactly the kind of service we were looking for, and Neil Kelly didnt disappoint.
