Even though their mechanics are working through a big backlog, they were able to squeeze me in last minute for a quick fix for my 2002 Eurovan camper which had been throwing some transmission related codes. The van was in and out in less than a day. Ill definitely be coming back!
I worked with Tom - he explained my cars issue and time line to get it fixed very well. He called when he found exactly the issue with a reasonable price. Got my car back sooner than expected! Also, he noticed some issues that were covered under warranty/recall from VW thankfully he didn’t try to upset me on those repair but instead sent me to a VW dealership. Great shop 10/10 recommend!
I only go there to buy parts.I do my own repair.
Work was fine. Fair price. Not fast, but I was told that up front. Would go back without hesitation for future work.
They have had my car for over a month and still have not called me to say when theyre going to fix my car
Great guys. I do business there all the time, thank you for still being local brick and morder business!
I have been using this shop for the past 5 years since Ive moved to Portland! Great family owned company that knows Vanagons. Customer for life!
This is the only indy VW/Audi shop in town to take your German vehicle to. They welcome you very warmly. They listen very well and understand the issues (especially a man named Lee). They explain options for fixing and the prices that come with them. Once they even offered a discount that reduced my cost almost $500 on a 9k bill. They do thorough work on your car. Very highly recommended for auto care.
All around terrible. Take your money elsewhere! Incredibly rude employees. Way over priced work.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff, top-notch work
Love this shop. Good people that treat me like family.
Halsey always has the parts I need if not discontinued... they have been professional help as long as I have been going to them and thats been about 20 years now they have even provided me new old stock parts that have been discontinued five star service in my opinion....keep it up Halsey!!!
DO NOT TAKE YOUR AUDI HERE. Ive been going to this shop for years, no longer. My vehicle has been in and out of their shop 5 times in the last 13 months, its not the car its the mechanic. Chris was the old Audi tech and when he left seems like so did the quality and costumer service. Why do I need to call to find out if my car is ready, if they have even looked at it after being at the shop for over a month. Just got my car back and the new hose they told me was the reason for leaking is leaking again after only 2 hours of it being back in my possession. Im never going back, Im tired of giving them the opportunity to fix their work and it not being fixed.
One of the best shops in the PNW in my opinion. Ive taken my cars to this shop for over 15 years, they have some of the best and well known, skilled technicians around. Family owned and operated shop, and honest good people. The parts department is super knowledgeable, and very helpful, no matter what you need. Highly, highly recommend this shop. You wont be disappointed!
My boyfriend and I were treated horribly from this business. We were cussed at, yelled at, had my keys thrown at us and were kicked off the property for arguing the quality of the repairs done on my car. Over 2 visits in an attempt to have an extremely bad wheel bearing fixed and window mechanics diagnosed for a window that wouldnt roll up, I was charged $50 for the diagnostic. But after the diagnostic they had broken the door handle inside the vehicle so the door could not be opened. They claimed they had nothing to do with this. Had it checked by another mechanic who said it was clearly broken by Halsey and not completely put back together. Halsey ripped me off to repair nothing and break the door.As for the wheel bearing that was bad, it never got fixed during that visit! They replaced the wrong one! One that was in good shape. I was told to bring the car back and they would fix it. They fixed the bearing and charged over $550 for $225 in actual repairs as I was charged for wrongful work that was their fault. When complaining about the quality of service they got extremely aggressive and hostile. We were repeatedly yelled at by the mechanic to shut up and told we were liars. Their excuse was things magically broke like a light bulb not turning on one day (no joke), which is ridiculous because a door handle doesnt magically break after the door has been taken apart and a bearing doesnt magically go bad between being repaired by the mechanic and picked up by the owner.Theyre very kind until you have anything negative to say about their quality of work done to your vehicle. After looking at the recommended and not recommended reviews on Yelp we see were not the only ones with this experience. (Quick sum up of Yelp. We signed up specifically to write that review which automatically lists us in the not recommended reviews because its how Yelp prevents spam posts until you upload a profile picture and or other reviews. There were 15+ one star reviews in the not recommended section of which people had the same issues and clearly signed up just to write a review like us.To sum it up, we were treated like horrible people, yelled at, cursed at, thrown keys at and 86d from the property for arguing the quality of their horrendous service.
Im going to give these guys a 5... Tom diagnosed and rectified the issue with my 78 bus driving like a champ. My guess the super low stars are possibly people who just took a shed of a vehicle in that was beyond a well priced repair.Too many people out there just too quick to rip into people and cannot come to terms with the fact their vehicles just had many problems.Tom... Thank you buddy and a massive thank you to your lovely wife too.
Ive been coming here to buy parts for a lot of years. Why?They have a knowledgeable staff and the parts I need at a reasonable price. That my friend, is all the reason Ive ever needed.
Always very knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly.
ZERO STARS FOR HALSEY AUTOMOTIVE!!! Do NOT give these people your money. I dont care how long Halsey Automotive has been in business -- they are con-men. My experience was with Tom and a mechanic standing next to him. It was clear they were bullshitting me about work they had done -- over $1,400 for very simple repairs and maintenance. So I asked a question about whether they checked my heater and was there any problem with it? Instead of saying no, we didnt check it -- it wasnt on your list (as it wasnt).... they said: Yeah, yeah. We checked it and it works just perfect! Me: Really, heat comes out? Tom and Mechanic: Yes, no problem - plenty of heat! Me (now Im really baiting them): You mean you turned on my car, turned the heat fully on, let it run and it was fine? Both of them nodded eagerly and assured me there was no problem with my heat. Heres the thing: my heater had been broken for a long time and absolutely no heat comes out. Ive had honest mechanics tell me why there is NO HEAT. So only visit these dishonest idiots at Halsey Auto if you have money to burn and a yearning to listen to liars lie.
Very detailed with their work and quick turn around time!
Great staff, very knowledgable. Brought my 05 audi a4 in for repairs, technician took time to check over my car, and suggested the necessary repairs. Service was done same day, and at a very fair price. If you have a vw or audi, this is where to go imo
Best place in Portland to take your VW!!! Very helpful and do great work!
Had a good experience getting my Beetle fixed up here. Knowledgeable family-owned business had the problem narrowed down and repaired by the end of the day I brought it in for, and kept me updated via phone on the process throughout the day.My only qualm was the differing estimates they gave me, making me wonder at the final price, which thankfully turned out to be less than any of the projections, but couldve just as easily not have been.
Amazing family owned Volkswagen and Audi repair shop!
Havent really worked with them yet apart from having them do a pre-purchase inspection on a vehicle I didnt end up buying. Their reputation for quality work means it may be a bit of a wait, but the word is that theyll do the job right.Unfortunately, the main standout of my experience with them so far was that you definitely shouldnt ask any questions about the popular Subaru engine swap. The owner jumped down my throat at my first question on the topic, and didnt seem to really take any of my other questions on other topics seriously afterward.Though everyone else was friendly, I would probably try one of the several other highly reputable shops in town before coming back here, for the sake of being able to ask questions freely without being treated that way.
Called on the phone to get a quote and all I was got was rude and quick replys. A lot of WHAT, HUHs before being placed on hold and passed to another tech who had no clue why I was on the phone and had the same inherent character. There team is not professional at all and did not seem like they wanted or needed my business. Its a shame because I own several European cars and would love to find a decent Euro mechanic in the area.
Best VW shop around!
Frindly staff and have the parts i needed. Able and willing to help.
Dropped car off Sunday night. 5 pm Monday had received no communication. Called and was told they would look at it the next day. FRIDAY had still heard nothing. Called. Oh...they will look at it next. Atrocious customer service. Be warned.
I get honest answers and timelines for repair. These are quirky machines, they know how to fix them and hunt up the odd issues. When I roll out, I feel more confident with a road trip safety check.
A Portland Secret: Volkswgen repair shop and european car parts sales (new parts only) DIY Mechanics as well as shops go here to get thier parts! Halsey is awesome.
Friendly staff good product...ect... ect...
Audi parts in stock, priced well below all others. I love this place and have bought parts here for just About every car Ive owned in the last 20+ years
This bill is always less than I expect, they always show integrity with their work and I love that this is a successful family owned business.
I’ve been taking my car to Halsey auto for a few years now and have consistently been impressed with their quality of work, speed, honesty and clear communication, and fair pricing.
Got my 80 Dasher back and its running worse than when I brought it in. They replaced my clutch fork and somehow the clutch sticks. They installed a new starter and my car starts worse than when my old starter was in there and is now draining my battery. Supposedly they had a Dasher expert work on my car. Whats worse is they got mad at me for coming to pick my car up at the end of the day like I dont have a job. Unless you hate your VW dont bring your vehicle hereResponse - I picked my car up on 2/13/18. Havent been able to start or drive it since I parked it at my house. Shouldnt have to bring my car back for you to look at it again. It should have left you shop ready to go or at least I should have been made aware of any issues. After the attitude I got when I came to pick my car up is there any wonder I didnt call you guys back?
Angel is great. They know what they are doing. Good prices.
Great customer service and very knowledgeable. These guys have been around for a long time because they are great and know how to do good business!
Terrible service. Paid for repairs that were never done. Over charged for parts and time on repairs that were done. Several occasions did they not fix problems that they were to fix.Was yelled, cursed and kicked off the property for arguing the quality and wrongful charges of repairs and damages caused by them. Lee Caldwell has a hot temper and is one of the employees who was enraged by the arguments. Avoid this employee.
I now miss these folks! Tom is straight up and his wife is just a super person. simply said, they are very trustworthy and knowledgable!
Great family owned business!
Impressed with the counter folks, more impressed with the lady who helped me behind the counter and her sweet kitty with only one eye, what a,adorable cat..these guys know there vws!
My wife and I have been getting work done by Tom and his guys for 20 years. Never had any issue with quality of price. They are all very noligable and very helpful. Would not take my vw anywhere else.
Im absolutely blown away by people giving this company bad reviews. If you treat vendors rudely then sooner or later they are going have enough of your attitude and get mad themselves, they are only human. My wife and I have use them for her 2001 Beetle 1.8 Turbo for 17 years. They have alway been courteous, treating us more like family. VWs have a bad reputation for throwing up error codes, sometime with good reasons, other times inexplicably. Tom tells us when a replacement component is needed or if its OK just to reset the code and continue driving. I actually reset them myself these days if I know what the code is telling me. Its true that sometimes they cant fit you in for several days but that is just a reflection on how many people go to them becasue they trust them. They will often go out of their way to help, for instance a few years ago I took the car in on a problem. Tom told me that he thought that there was a secret VW warranty on that particular problem and to leave it with him. He the checked online and confirmed its existence, took the car down to a VW dealer in Gladstone, got it fixed under the warranty (my car was at least 5 years old at this point) and returned it to his shop for me to pick it up. He charged me nothing, not even for his time. Just last month he worked with a body shop, supplying them with a spare used drivers door to keep the price down. My bill was $1,400 less thanks to him acting as a go-between.
They fix Volkswagens. But I was having a problem changing a tire and they come out and help me, 😀😁😂 and I drive a Ford !!!
Family owned and family run.
I have two VW TDI cars which I have had worked on at Halsey Automotive multiple times. Every time they have been great. The issues have been resolved and I was charged a price very close to what I was quoted when they started the process. I would highly recommend them for any VW mechanical work you need done.
They fixed our 73 Super Beetle in a timely and professional manner with a more than fair price.
I have never taken the time to write a review for any business, but this time I thought should.I have a 03 GTI 20th Anniversary that put a rod through the side of the block.I contacted four local VW repair shops to get a estimate on replacing the engine. Halsey Automotive was the only one to call me back in a timely matter. Two never returned my call and the other took four days.Lee called back within fifteen minutes with a quote on a used engine. I asked how much more for a new one and he got back to me in 10 minutes.I had them order a new engine on a Friday and it arrived the next Tuesday from the east coast. I dropped off the car thinking it would take 10 to 14 days to repair, and they called me back in 4 days telling me the car was ready to go.This is a family run business that knows Volkswagens inside and out. I was able to talk to the mechanic that repaired my car and had all of my questions answered. I had a new clutch and cooling fan replaced at the same time. They did a fantastic job repairing my GTI.The car is a blast drive with more power, and I dont regret spending the bucks to fix it.I would highly recommend Halsey Automotive to anyone with a VW or Audi needing repair. Thanks, Sean K.
Absolutely Amazing staff!
Have used this shop for over 20 years. It is so nice to have a mechanic that you can confide in and trust.
I brought my expedition today and i had a wonderful experience with this guy name Beto, he made me feel confident and safe with truck by explaining the good and the bad about my truck, he noticed that my rear right tires had a damage that could lead to a disaster if im gonna be traveling miles and miles away, but since Mr Beto noticed it right away and send me american tires to replace it! Kudos Mr Beto!
They do good work on vw and Audi cars
I wouldnt have work done on my or my wifes classic VWs anywhere else!Ive been taking my 1985 Vanagon to Tom and his crew for 20 years: Tune-ups, leaking cylinder heads, brakes, coolant leaks, transmission repairs, replacements of allsorts, fuel lines, radiator, hoses. They installed some new shocks and springs just last year. I have received numerous tips, free advice, and have been told some of my plans were not good. I appreciated the honesty. The customer isnt always right!I have always considered their work to be top-notch, fairly priced, and Deborah (Toms wife) has always been pleasant and fun to talk to.That said, Halsey Automotive Repair is VERY busy. What does that mean? You wont get your work done as quickly as you might like. What else? They are that good. Thats why they are so busy!!!Now, there are a bunch of fast paced, new-comers to Portland who complain that their repairs werent done quickly enough; guess what? You can have fast or good, but not both. While they have your vehicle relax, take the bus, ride a bike, or walk: it will do you good. Or just rent a econo-box if you must drive. Finally, this is a shop with people working there not God. Mistakes can happen, but if you approach problems with a smile on your face and love in your heart, you may be surprised how things will work out.Good luck!
Tom is not honest, I will never take my Westfalia there. It is an amazing story for a well known place for cheating customers, later I was told by few Tom has a reputation. After three weeks of keeping my camper, For a tuneup job he replaces my Digfit Control Unit. When I took it back because it has lost power on third gear he told me to change to higher grade fuel. Nothing helped.I then drove to california and asked my old mechanic to check it. After checking the old control Unit and the newely replaced by Tom has asked why I changed it. I drove back with normal power with my original Control Unit and it is running fine.I did not tell you how much all that costed me. Thanks to Tom.
Ive known this place for a while, did some business with them and would like to recommend it. But my recent phone conversation disappointed me. I just wanted to confirm diagnostic fee and schedule. What I got was condescending disrespectful and kind of rude talk. I dont feel like giving them my money again.
AWFUL!! I called about having my transmission looked at a very rude grumpy old man told me he couldnt see me for 2 weeks, Ok fine. Then he said I should drop it off, get a rental and if I kept driving Id need a new $6000 transmission...HE NEVER LOOKED AT MY CAR and suggested all of this. I went somewhere else and it took 3 hours and no rental car was needed and all is good.
The folks at Halsey have been in business for like 40 years. You dont achieve that by being a bunch of con artists, lousy mechanics or have poor customer service. Some of these folks on here are ranting about their customer service. They may have just caught one guy on a day when they were having a bad day--which EVERY shop will have sometimes, hands down. Although I work on my own cars a great deal, some things are better left to the pros, especially when I dont have time...thats where Halsey comes in. They are a stand-up bunch of folks there. And the reason why some folks wait a long time to get their car back? Its because they are backed up for three weeks with business--which can be good and bad. Partially because so many other Vdub/Audi shops in the area have closed, and folks dont wanna get raked over the coals at the dealer. So ya know what? Ya shut yer mouth and take it over to the fine folks at Halsey and wait your turn for good service at a price you can actually afford. If you dont wanna do that, then shut yer mouth and take it over to Dick Hannahs dealership and pay the big money, and dont complain. (thats IF they will even work on yer damned 78 bus or your 66 Bug or your 79 Rabbit to begin with!
Be ready for Halsey Auto to keep your car for longer then what you expect.I made an appointment to have my GTI looked at on a Wednesday. I dropped my car off the night before but didnt get a call the next day. I had to call them 15 minutes before they closed to find out that they didnt have enough time to look at it WTF Thats why I made an appointment TO GET MY CAR BACK RIGHT AWAY. I was surprised that I had to call them instead of them calling me. I ended up getting my car back Friday evening... 4 DAYS after dropping it off with an appointment. When I was in the shop office picking it up I noticed 2 phone conversations with people who where upset that they werent getting their cars back too... I think they have a hard time managing their time and end up taking longer to get things done then they think... I am not going to bring my VW back here anymore. WARNING to be prepared to be carless for a few days if you give them your keys appointment or not.
I had heard about Halsey repair service and it was all good. When my bus broke down I had it towed in on a Sunday evening. They kept the car for a month before I even found out what it needed, in spite of calling a couple times a week to hear were working on it.First they told me that my carbs were from a type 3 and I needed a new set of carburetors. Then they told me that they could fix the existing carbs. I gave the ok and got the bus back another week later and was told it was running fine. Youll like it. Tom said as a was paying for the work. Well, I liked it for a week until it broke down with the same problem I took it in for. $250.00 in tow bills and Tom tells me that a wire was loose on the condenser. It was nice of them to not charge me for the condenser nor the labor. Cool, except for the tow bills. Another week later, the same problem came back.I took the bus to another mechanic that came highly recommend. I found out that the carbs had not been synchronized, the timing was off, a wire was not connected to the left carb. Jim did a tune up and synchronized the carbs. Finally an honest guy, who does great work at a fair price.Halsey no more.
Had my VW Vanagon 7 weeks and only gave me the run around and never would give me any status or when it would be repaired. Worst customer service Ive ever experienced. Finally had to have it towed somewhere else. Avoid this place unless you like being treated like a mushroom.
I dislike mechanics more than dentists. Ive never been robbed by an armed criminal, but I imagine its the same feeling I get when I leave my car with a mechanic and await his or her estimate (which I assume will always be half what they actually charge me). Needless to say, when out 03 Cabrio all but broke down less than a mile from Halsey Automotive, I didnt have a whole lot of options and they basically had me over the hood. I cant believe how well it turned out. It was like a miracle that not only was there a very capable VW specialist nearby, but they were also honest. They fixed a transmission issue that the previous mechanic had botched, and although the sputtering engine issue returned several days later, they fixed it on the second visit... all service came in under $400. We can use 2nd gear now, and the engine had run great for a half year since. Also, the Cabrio had a check engine light that came on occasionally for as long as I can remember. Other mechanics and VW specialists have looked at it over the years, and everyone had an idea what might have caused it, but the advice if any was always to ignore it because it always went away. It hasnt come been since we took it here. If my Hyundai breaks down, Im taking it here, too.
Knowledgeable staff, friendly and the place to go for your Volkswagen car parts. MK2
Brought our car here. They were uncommunicative and when they did communicate they were aggressive . I would write more, but they threaten my husband that they would call there lawyers if I wrote a bad review. Hence, the one star.
They know there jobs
Honest and fair prices
