I recently graduated from college in Pittsburgh, and joined X Shadyside during the summer of 2020 since the gym on my campus was closed due to covid. I planned on only using this gym for a couple of months until I was able to go back to campus, but liked it so much that I stayed until graduation. This gym is clean and professional and the location is awesome. I always felt welcomed by the staff at the desk, and felt very comfortable working out there. Signing up was very easy, and the staff always responded quickly to any questions. I had to cancel a few weeks ago when I moved out of Pittsburgh, and canceling was very easy. I will genuinely miss this gym.
Have been a member for about 3 months now, and have been powerlifting for about 7 years. There’s a great variety of equipment for all sorts of workout styles. The patrons and staff are kind and courteous and people are usually good about putting weights back. High-contact parts of machines are kept clean but if you wipe down other parts they’re pretty dang grimey. I also don’t think anyone has ever vacuumed around the perimeter (see debris and dead insects in photos), so cleanliness could certainly be improved on. The AC could also be cranked up a bit in the summer because it gets humid and musty, which is a perfect environment for breeding bacteria on sweaty equipment (trust me, I’ve taken a few microbiology courses).Overall, it’s a great gym, but a regular cleaning staff should be hired to wipe/mop/vacuum more thoroughly cause I’m pretty sure the regular staff never gets around to it.EDIT: staff has cleaned around perimeter and windows so they’re not as grimy anymore. However, general equipment and mirror cleanliness is still very lacking (see photos).
I’ve been going to Xshadyside for about a month now. I was looking for a gym that had good equipment, flexible hours and an option for personal training. I was a little skeptical because my last experience with personal training at a locally owned gym was awful, but I can wholeheartedly say that I am having such a great experience here. When I first inquired about the gym management was extremely responsive. Izzy answered all of my questions upfront and made sure that I felt completely comfortable with everything, especially because of my past experience. She also talked about how the owners are very involved and the staff is like a family - this is something I definitely admire because if you’re running a business and care about your customers you have to care about your staff first. My training consultation was productive and everyone was very friendly when I got to the gym. When I first met my trainer, Hayley, she was (and still is) super communicative about schedules and really listens to my goals. She’s also very thorough and even did a survey before our first session which I thought was super helpful and showed that she was invested. She’s also very personable so whenever I go to the gym I feel like I’m working out with a really smart friend that knows her stuff and I trust her to help me get to where I want to be which is a complete 180 from my last experience!Aside from personal training I go to the gym almost every morning. It’s very clean, has great equipment and there’s always machines available. Sometimes I feel like I have the gym to myself which is nice for those who are just getting back into it or starting a workout routine. Every staff member I’ve come in contact with is always friendly and helpful. I think pricing is great for personal training options as well as general use of the gym. I haven’t gone to any classes yet - but that’s next on my list!If you’re looking for a local gym with friendly staff, great pricing, good equipment - I highly recommend!
X Shadyside is overall a great gym. The staff is nice, the facility is clean, and it’s generally not too crowded. Literally the ONLY thing I would ask is that they get the free weights that go up in 2.5lb increments. But that’s obviously a pretty insignificant “negative” hence why I still have 5 stars. Love that they’re locally owned and operated!
Its amazing! Clean, organized and the client attention is the best!
Before I joined X Shadyside, it’s worth noting that I have been a member of over 5 different gyms in my life. I have also lived in China for one year. The equipment in all my gyms prior to joining was relatively modern. Now let’s discuss X ShadySide. The membership is $55 per month which is already expensive. The equipment and machines is OLD and no I’m not exaggerating. The bench presses are absurdly narrow, the Olympic bars are dated and the weight plates themselves are ancient. The worst part is the machines, they are literally the oldest machines I have seen in my entire life.I recommend that the owners upgrade the equipment. There’s no sugarcoating it or reframing it as a “retro vibe”. This place needs to be updated badly. It will attract new customers and keep current customers on board. I personally talked to three people who were switching to JCC or LA fitness. The layout is a bit strange but the best part about this gym is that everyone is friendly and respectful. Grunting and yelling isn’t an issue.Ownership - please invest in your business and new machines/equipment. Your gym is located in a premier and upscale neighborhood but this gym doesn’t reflect the high membership price or match the reputation for high quality.
The best gym in Pittsburgh. This place is incredible in many different ways. From the location, the equipment but most importantly, the people. From the moment you walk in, youre greeted with a big smile from a staff member whether that be a trainer, front desk, or the owners. The gym is equipped with everything you need for all types of people. The price is exceptional and you wont find a better gym in the city of Pittsburgh! Guaranteed.
4 star generala gives five stars worth it
I like that it’s a local business. But I would reconsider the choice of “art” in the bottom floor. A lot of the portraits of the women (like a picture of a naked woman on her hands and knees i front of the treadmills) are out of place for a gym and doesn’t paint a good picture of women. Its demeaning. Should be an easy fix for management.
I will definitely give 5 stars for this gym. I got my memberships here in 2018 and always went there after work or study, or in the Sunday morning just because of eating too much on Saturday. I love the fitness facilities and the environment. Always clean, smell good, look great. And their staffs are friendly. I will recommend this gym to my friends.
Clean, very nice staff, plenty of equipment. Good mask policy during covid.
This is a great neighborhood gym. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. The facilities have everything that you need for weight training, cardio, and stretching. I highly recommend this gym!
I joined almost a year ago. It was nice at first, but THIS PLACE IS NOT CLEANED. Don’t come here if you expect clean facilities. There are not enough wipes, so obviously few people wipe down after themselves. It smells here. Always. I’d add a picture but it won’t get the stench across.I have to ask the staff to refill the bathroom paper towels almost daily. The lighting is pretty low like a 24 hr hotel gym.Men’s changing room is absolutely disgusting. The floors get swept at night, but nothing is sanitized. The showers don’t work and there is mold on the shower curtains. It’s about $45 a month.Upsides: group classes are included in membership. This place is a 2 min walk from my house. There’s gigantic posters of skinny semi-naked women everywhere. Put that in your pros or cons, but Idt they’re there for female body empowerment.Update: picture added
I am a former employee of X Shadyside, so I wont discuss the way gym is set or its cleanliness. But I had to part my ways with gym due to a very poor management. Manager was absolutely irresponsible about her job and absolutely UNRESPONSIVE when it came to my personal belongings, last paycheck and the contract we signed for my records. Even after I left I asked to get copy of my Work papers they just ignored me, I left my stuff there and wanted to pick it up and I was told I am not allowed to. My last paycheck was messed up and counted wrong, which thanks they fixed it. But payment after I left they decided to deduct taxes when I worked on 1099 and unfortunately they didn’t responded on my questions neither as well when I came first time to talk everyone even didn’t look in my eyes which means they used me as example for everyone who works there. Management is choosing people due to her personal preferences, whatever your experience might be. I wont recommend anyone to deal with this gym or especially work for them. I believe, your personal safety is as important to you, as it is to me, so JUST DONT APPLY THERE. I loved other trainers there and people that I worked out with, but. There are so many places that see you as a human being and appreciate you and your hard job.
I’ve been going to Shadyside X since 2003.The gym is convenient to the neighborhood, clean, has an excellent staff, as well as amazing owners. I highly recommend this facility to anyone looking for a permanent gym.
Decent gym walking distance in shadyside. Gym has potential to be a great if it had some quality equipment. One piece of equipment that would improve the gym the is the rogue rhino belt squat machine. This single piece of equipment would help separate the gym from competitors in the area. Works excellent for people who suffer from back and shoulder problems. Sell/replace one of the 3 leg press machines, and put this in the place and you go from 4 to a 5 star
I had a great experience at X Shadyside. The gym has all equipment I would need, and is a great environment for a workout. Will be going back when I am in town.
I love working out here. The memberships are priced very well for the city, and classes are included. They offer a great variety of classes, and the community is very supportive, respectful, and fun! All of the employees are very sweet, and I never feel judged or shy to workout. Definitely check it out. Such a gem in our Shadyside community!
X Shadyside is a great gym. Location is perfect, facilities are clean and the staff is helpful and kind. They offer a variety of classes and the building itself has more than enough space. Its open 24 hours which makes it easy to get a workout in, and they offer enough equipment to target any part of the body. I highly recommend this gym for anyone whos not a fan of waiting in line for a machine. I was always able to easily work in with someone and never had to actually wait behind two or three other people just to get on a bench or squat rack--and then feel pressured to hurry through my workout. 5 stars to X Shadyside.
I wanted to join this gym. When you go to the home page of their website, theres a woman in a Wonder Woman bikini. Shes not wearing gym clothes and doesnt even look like she works out... shes just skinny. She is literally just eye candy. Its barely even relevant and makes me feel like they have a very unwelcoming/ objectifying culture towards women.
The X is a bit of a disappointment. I bought a year long membership when I moved to Shadyside because the gym was within walking distance of my place. I’ve been going here several times a week for 6 months now and, while walking to the gym is convenient, I’m not sure I would make that decision again. There are 7 machines upstairs that require a full length bar, but they only have 5 bars. This renders 2 work stations almost completely useless if the other four are in use simply because they lack the proper amount of equipment. The upstairs workout area is already extremely congested, so the machines become a waste of space. It’s the only gym I’ve ever been to that doesn’t have a surplus of bars, and it’s the most expensive one I’ve gone to. If you go here and are interested in benching, squatting, deadlifting, or shoulder pressing you may find yourself waiting quite a bit. May seem like a small problem, but it might be worth considering when looking into gym memberships. Speaks to a general theme within the X. That being said, the staff is friendly and accommodating. Other members keep to themselves and are courteous.
I love the gym and enjoy going. However, I went very early in the morning (4 am Monday), and the gym was closed. Why was it closed if you advertise as 24 hours, and will this be an issue in the future? Ill update to 5 stars if provided with an explanation. ThanksUpdate: Thanks for the explanation!
Great gym. If you are thinking of choosing between this and LA fitness. You will love this family owned gym. 10/10
Amazing management and staff. I visited for a few weeks and they were able to tailor a very agreeable membership plan that met my needs. Loads of equipment and very spacious, I never had to wait for a station.
Been a member for nearly a year now. Most members do their own thing and keep proper gym etiquette. The facilities are clean, have solid classes, friendly employees, and equipment is in good condition. I think they could utilize the 2 spare empty rooms a bit better, maybe with some more dedicated Olympic lifting stations, but I wouldn’t doubt it if they have plans.
I hate giving bad review, because I try to see the positive in everything and be thankful for any service I enjoy, even if I paid for it. Unfortunately, I cannot do that for X Shadyside as I feel misinformed and as a victim of fraud. I was going to be there for a month or two so my first question when signing up was when can I cancel so that I wont be charged the following month? The answer I received was before the 4th. I went there in the middle of last month to try to cancel my membership and I was told I have to send an email. I sent an email on the 4th of Feb to end my membership.1. There was no reply till today2. I got charged plus late fees3. I called to inform them about it, whoever I spoke to was not willing to refund me my moneyThank you for giving me a place to workout but I do not recommend the gym to anyone
Amazing gym! They’re doing renovations which is great for more empty floor space for mat workouts. Moved to Pitt looking for a clean, modern gym with friendly staff and found it. Tried the PNC Y downtown and it wasn’t half as nice. Price isn’t terrible and you can quit at anytime. Plus, all the classes at X Shadyside are free which is great and the selection is solid too (P90X, insanity).
This gym suits my needs perfectly. The spin classes are regularly schedules, and the instructors excellent. Theres good weights, treadmills and its open whenever I need. Lots of friendly people - excellent gym
I have been a member for two years and have been pleased with everything this gym has to offer. Additionally, Ive found the staff to be very friendly, the facility clean, and the equipment well maintained. That said, I also thought Id respond to some of the other comments below that seem focused on billing/price complaints. Overall, I would offer that your experience is going to be entirely based on your own individual perspectives. If you are looking for a private gym, in the city, in Shadyside (up and coming part of town, lots of young professionals and grad students), within walking distance, and where the staff knows your name - then there are only two or three options and I and personally I considered X Shadyside to be the best. Conversely, if youre looking for a cheap big box gym (PlanetFitness, LA Fitness, etc.) then I think you need to be prepared to drive because you arent going to find that anywhere in Shadyside, Oakland, or Squirrel Hill.
I love this gym. It easily is the best option for exercise in Pittsburgh for any one wondering and I have tried them all. I just wish this place was 24 / 7.
This gym is scummy and has terrible customer service. They have charged me twice for services that have not been rendered. When I signed up for a membership a few days later I had an accident and could not stand let alone walk. I swiftly asked for a refund. But to this day I have been ignored. Im still being charged and after several emails to the owner he/she refuses to even respond to my case. I would give them 0 stars if I could.
I definitely recommend this gym!
Staff is helpful and nice, gym is quite outdated. The weight room looks like it’s from 1980. Old machines and weights. Normally I’m okay with this but if your going to charge 50$ a month plus start up fees you need to put money back into the gym and get some new equipment. Lack of squat racks and deadlift areas. Too many empty rooms with no equipmentUpdate! they Added new equipment gym looks much better
Love this gym and the people who work there. Great workout environment and all the equipment I ever need!
Cozy local gym, friendly staff, reasonable hours, usually enough equipment that theres no waiting around for machines, etc (except during the usual rush hour)
Positives - the staff are very nice and the place is decently clean. The locker rooms and restrooms could stand to be cleaner but aren’t terrible either.Negatives - you do NOT get your money’s worth here! It costs you $50 a month and the equipment and facilities at SO outdated. Nothing has been replaced in years. The free weights all have cracked or missing rubber, the yoga mats are crumbling apart, the floor/carpeting hasn’t been replaced since they opened and the machine are old and coverings are cracked. The whole place needs a total remodel to brighten everything up and replace things. For what you’re paying at this gym, things should be replaced well before they ever reach this state. Gyms like crunch fitness and planet fitness in the area, which only charge $10 a month, have far surperior equipment and facilities.
Good gym, good value since the fitness classes are included in the price. Lots of machines, but still enough space for people that want to use free weights.
The gym is usually very full and it doesnt have a lot of equipements. The other bad thing is that the existing equipments are not distributed equally, for example in the first flower there are many more treadmills than other types of machines. High price for not a great gym. Only the location is convenient.
I love the variety of classes they have! Im excited to try them out!
The gym is fine, I never had a bad experience working out and it was rarely crowded. However, the whole pricing scheme is set up to scam you out of as much money as possible. I havent belonged to many gyms, I hope this isnt standard because it is horrendous here.I tried to freeze my account, I was told that a notification of a freeze needed to go in by the 25th of the month before. So I lost $55 for a month I wasnt in town for. When I moved, I tried to cancel my account over the phone but I was told I needed to come in to do this. I came in, on the 22nd of the month, thinking that freeze/cancellations had the same policy. NOPE! Cancellations have to be in a month before. So I froze my account for the next month and then cancelled the following month. My roommate doesnt live in Pittsburgh anymore and has no intention to return and they will not let him cancel his account. My wallet was stolen elsewhere and I had to cancel my credit card. My card was declined and they charged me a $15 fee. Better yet, they never notified me, had I not asked an account question I would have never known and would have been accumulating more and more charges.I explained the situation and they were nice and removed the decline fee. This was months ago and it still hasnt hit my account. Ive asked about it twice and havent seen the credit...
Excellent facility. Clean. Plenty of equipment. Very nice helpful people.
Registered in the morning for a demo class and got the confirmation email with ref. number. Came in the gym SAME DAY, and staff said the ticket can no longer be used.Impressed by how these people manage a business without trustworthiness.
Beware the cancellation process is RIDICULOUS!!!! You must give 30 days written notice sent via certified mail, then call them with the tracking number and go thru numerous reps just to cancel.
I joined X Shadyside this past summer while in Pittsburgh for an internship and without a doubt it was the best investment I made over the three months.I was big into their group fitness classes, particularly body pump and buti yoga. I saw atleast 6 of their instructors in action, all if which were very knowledgeable and encouraging. I recommend Lisas body pump to everyone for a challenging workout!Ontop of all their awesome classes, the staff is friendly and so are the people that go there. Everyone is on their own fitness journey, and I rarely felt judged while in a class. In the weight room, I was a little intimidated, but downstairs they have another small weight room which leads to a hall way lots of people go to lift weights privately. This is usually where I would go stretch after spending time on the stair stepper. All in all, great place! If you live in the area I highly recommend. Others at my internship with the L.A. Fitness route, and I could tell they didnt look forward to their workout as much as I did!
The location is great! Also their spin classes are pretty good!
If this was actually the case, we would have a lot more bad reviews concerning cancellations considering we’ve been in business for over 24 years.”— here we go, a piece of review about the cancellation experience. The membership for me was lasted for three full months with couple of prorated days at the beginning. The payment usually being processed on around 7th of each month, so I notified the gym about cancellation on the first day of that month, expecting to avoid the payment of the following cycle. However, the payment was still proceeded on 9th of that month, and I was friendly reminded that I could use the gym till end of that month which, however, sounds a little bit difficult for a guy whos already moved to a new neighborhood that isnt nearby. What I end up to know is that their billing cycle begins on the first day of each month, and you’ll need to pay the full membership fee for that month even if you notify them at the first day. So, if you plan to cancel you membership, you probably want to cancel it at the end of the last month, or as they said 30 days in advance: “WE HAVE A 30 day cancellation notice.
Amazing gym, classes are great and they had all the equipment that I needed.
I go here with my mom and really like it. They have a variety of equipment so I never have to wait to use something.
Very terrible cancellation experience. They have a so called 30 days cancellation notice policy, which means if you are not satisfied with the gym in the first month, you cant quit and get the money back at all, however, you will be charged for the next months membership fee, which is 50 dollars. And the you need to pay 50 dollars in the first month like the activation fee ., which means if you join the gym, you will charged 150 dollars guarantee! (50 activation fee+ 50 first month membership + 50 second month membership fee )
Great place to workout. Friendly staff, and lots of equipment!
Make sure you get a confirmation email when you cancel. They have a habit of keeping accounts running and only contact you when your card in file expires and they cant charge it.
How much is the membership and do yins have a basketball court
Location, great exercise machines, staff, community
Got huge
