Dan is a VW guru. After a year of my car not being diagnosed correctly Dan was able to isolate the issue and provide the correct repairs. Couldnt be happier

I have driven all over the country in my 1988 Vanagon, and I have yet to find a repair shop that I trust as much as Dan’s. Dan is an absolute expert at these vehicles. He made himself available any time I called, giving me comprehensive answers to my questions even AFTER I had used his service and was far out of town. He told me to call back any time, and never made me feel like I was bothering him with my questions, even though I know he is extremely busy.Going to mechanics with my vehicle generally makes me very uncomfortable, because I am always overcharged. I am a young girl, I’m not “car smart” unfortunately, and my vehicle is obviously unusual. Dan not only charged me VERY fairly, I think he actually UNDERcharged me! My good friend, a mechanic in Tennessee, was pleasantly shocked when I told him how much I paid, and Dan did a fantastic job.Dan & his wife prioritize customer service like it’s second nature. I would be happily willing to drive several hours to get a service done on my Vanagon again here. Highest recommendations! Thank you, thank you, thank you for your honesty and hard work!!!! Brought my 2276 turbo sandrail in to get dyno tuned and to address a few other items. I waited until after the first dune trip to leave a review and it runs extremely well. Very impressed with their work and will be going back to them anytime I need something. Highly recommend

I recently purchased a 67 bus. I wanted to get the oil changed and a overall check. I went to 3 German mechanic shops only to find out they do not work on air-cooled engines so back home to the computer. I found 2 shops so I went to the first. I explained to the guy at the counter that I needed an oil change and I wanted a mechanic to check it out. Without hesitation the guy through out a date approximately 2 months away. I felt like he was saying that they didnt want to bother with a smaller job so off to the second shop I went. This shop seemed ok so I made the appt. for the following week. That weekend I was at this spot on Mesa and two VWs that looked magazine worthy pulled in so I asked them where they go for service. The guy said he only trusts one shop Competition Engineering. I immediately called (shop was closed on Saturday) and the owner answered!!! we made the appt. for the following week.I could not be happier with the services I received. The bus runs so good I had them order disc brakes so I could stop. And they were able to get their upholstery guy to do some small repairs the spot. I would not hesitate to recommend CE to family, friends, air-cooled enthusiast.

If you want the best, this is the place. They built my 64 beetle engine and its amazing. I took them my engine in boxes and towed in my car. They gave me a powerful reliable engine. You will be very pleased with their work. They are the BEST in Arizona.

I came in for a bus exam after driving from Northern CA.. I needed to find a pro VW specialist for my regular service needs. Dan and his wife Holly were so helpful and friendly. Dan took a look at a few issues and advised me. CE did an oil change, and because of their competent customer service, and friendly attitude, I will be back when needed. Thank you Competition Engineering.

Dan, the owner, completely overhauled the suspension on my VW Type 181 (Thing) that had been previously modified for off road use. Its perfect now and the cost was well below what I expected. Now he gets to work on my VW trike!

There is something to say about the owner Dan. He has helped me in many ways when deciding to go to a street car to a drag race car. Helping me fix up my piece of junk bug! After some hiccups with my horrible communication skills, we had a falling out and didnt speak for years. And during that time I moved to multiple states in the U.S. I had an opportunity to come back to Arizona and relocated back here in late 2020. I have since gotten out of drag racing (sorta) and switched to a street car with blow through turbo and hope that I can call Dan and have him tune my motor. He is the only one I would trust tuning my turbo motor. So, I am changing my review, because it wasnt right of what I said and hope that Dan will forgive me and not hang up on me :-).

Cant say enough nice things about the entire team. Dan always goes the extra mile for you and your v-dub. You will never be happier. Its the best shop in town!!

Family owned. Great service. Had what I needed at every visit. Need advice on anything about VWs they have it. Very helpful.

Bad experience. Spent a lot of money. Gave them a punchlist of issues to fix. Charged for things I didn’t ask for and didn’t fix things I asked to be fixed. Dan is ok, but ADD. Woman in the office is such a bit…to work with.

Dan is the most helpful and friendly person you will ever meet. If you own a VW you need to get to know Dan. I would only go somewhere else in an emergency. (It would have to be a serious emergency.)

Well they have been around for awhile, Dan came from Karls way back and is a guru of sorts. The do great work if you feel like spending classic car kind of money ( I mean these are VWs) . There staff has allways been the normal cocky VW type crowd thru the years.
