Maxercise is an academy with a lot of history. I know when I first started training MMA I had read about Maxercise through Grappling Magazine over 15 years ago.I have had the fortune of being in Philadelphia and getting the opportunity to train here for a couple of days. The instructors are great people that are very knowledgeable, and have put themselves on the front lines and competed - so you are learning real self defense techniques that have been battle tested. All the students were very humble and a good reflection of what one would expect at a real martial arts academy. If you are looking to learn mixed martial arts in a clean, safe, and fun family environment - this is the spot.
Maxercise is easily the best place in Philly to train; whether you are someone who wants to focus on competition or are just looking to learn something new and get active this is the best place for you. I happen to fall into the latter category. Even though I was not athletic at all and was definitely overweight, the instructors and students greeted me with the same welcoming and inclusive attitude that would have been given to a person who was focused on the sport and competition. The instructors here are top notch and the school overall has a welcoming atmosphere. Whether you are looking to compete or just trying to lose weight and get in shape you should definitely give this place a try.
Man!!! What a great place. Professor John D. Is awesome. He is not only an accomplished BJJ instructor and competitor but also has a strong judo background which adds so much benefit to his students. Ive had the pleasure of visiting here to train and would absolutely love it if this was my home academy! Everyone was very welcoming and friendly. Ill definitely be back!
I trained there today. The front desk girl was very helpful as well as all the instructors. I arrived a bit late and one of the instructors took the time to catch me up on the moves. All the other practitioners were kind. If you are in Philly this is a great place to roll!!!
Maxercise really emphasizes the team spirit and works to make everyone feel welcome regardless of all things, and its flexible to folks who want to train intensely for competition or just enjoy BJJ and want to work on techniques and training.I joined knowing next to nothing about the sport, just interested in getting exercise that wasnt a normal gym (because lets be real, that wasnt going to last) and because as a woman I feel like a little self defense never hurt anyone.I quickly came to love the sport, and have stayed because of the team. We have an impressive womens team who always encourages each other and the rest of the team too.It is a good workout and youre bound to get some bumps and bruises but in exchange youll feel good about yourself and learn more. If youre not sure if this is the sport for you, I recommend taking advantage of the free month trial, Im sure youll be hooked in no time:)
I came to Maxercise after training in another state. Everyone at the gym was extremely welcoming. The instructors are very knowledgeable and great at taking time to explain the techniques. Great place to train in Philadelphia.
Training at Maxercise has changed my life. After reaching my late 30s and getting bored with weightlifting, Maxercise introduced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu into my life and now Im experiencing true passion again. I also have been taking the kettle bell class which has strengthened my core so that I can better perform the BJJ moves. The environment at this gym is very friendly and family oriented. Training gives me the opportunity to discover things about myself that benefit me both in the gym, as well as, in my personal life outside the gym.One point that I must add is that my son and I both train together at Maxercise. What a bond that has been built between us, as now we have something in common beside being blood relatives. We actually can set goals and motivate each other in the same direction.
I’ve been a part of Maxercise for 8 years.I’ve learned so much & over the years have been able to physically feel fit and comfortable with myself. The mental strength and confidence have really helped me achieve success off the the mats.
Maxercise is a friendly and welcoming gym, open to all levels of fitness and interest. The high quality instruction is its best asset- its obvious that head coach John DiSimone truly loves to teach the art of jiujitsu, and you can see this reflected in the students as well. Casual practitioners and hardcore competitors receive the same level of respect, and the atmosphere is one of mutual achievement, rather than hierarchy.
This is a great gym for anyone in the BJJ community. Whether you’re looking to train as your primary sport or you’re looking for someone new to add to your routine, I recommend Max for anyone.
Excellent instructors, great energy, and positive vibes:I moved out to Philly about a year ago for school and was interested in trying out a jiu jitsu gym. I heard about Maxercise through a friend in Pittsburgh and he said it was worth stopping by. I took the plunge in January and have not looked back! Maxercise is very team oriented and that’s exactly what one experiences when they step on their mats - they are suddenly apart of a group continually striving to better themselves and each other regardless of rank.I quickly grew addicted to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and I try to train as often as my schedule allows it. The camaraderie amongst my teammates makes it an even more enjoyable experience (even when they’re getting the best of me on the mats!)If you’re looking for a gym to also call family, check out Maxercise!
Ive been training here for 2.5 months and have gone from a wimpy nerd to a slightly less wimpy nerd. 10/10 would roll again. But seriously, this place is dabombdotcom. I came in here with zero athletic experience outside of some basic weightlifting and the instructors and fellow students were very welcoming and worked with me, lack of coordination and all. Training at Maxercise been the first time in my life where I participated in a sport involving other people where I didnt end up quitting due to lack of natural talent. If youre thinking of trying recreational strangling for whatever reason, whether it be for exercise, self defense, competition, learning a new skill, trying to become a more badass person, etc, this is a great place to be at.
Great place to train and nice people who challenge you. From beginner to advanced there is always a nice vibe and great training environment.
John the coach illegally charged my credit card an excess of over 9 thousand dollars . I have filed a police report and will proceed with further criminal investigations, to prosecute him, I speak with plenty of proof and extreme disappointment and disgust as I was a past student of Maxercise and there are nice people there going to this school. its a shame the one who runs it has to be so corrupt, I have texted this individual, he has been playing nothing but games and feeding me lies. I feel sorry for those OTHERS that were affect by him as I have found other websites that have similar complaints about this John how he is all about the money. I had one of my staff members go for the 30 day free trial and he was asked for money the kid is a college student so he could only give him 300 dollars during his first 30 days, before the 30 days where up, my staff member said he could not go, John denied refunding him his money (another theft) STAY AWAY FROM THIS SCHOOL !!! HE WILL STEAL YOUR MONEY, I have atatched copies of attorneys request to refund and still no answer, STAY AWAY !!!!
The greatest gym I have ever train at
The combination of the level of competency of the instructors, safe and friendly yet competitive training environment, genuine care and attention provided for every student, family vibe, unique character of the place, and a history of competition success makes the experience you will receive at Maxercise truly invaluable... This place will change your life.
Great teachers, amazing with kids. Recommend this to anyone.
Its a good gym with great classes but the only problems are two, its a bit pricey but a guess thats because its smack dead in center city...7th chesnut...and you can tact on the cost to park also....between 4-5 $ if your luck enough to find a kiosk parking space, if not it will be about 11$ to park for about 2hrs....if money is no issue i would recommend this gym, maggie is great along with the other instructors...great muay thai class...intense....150 a month for bjj.......prices go up after you move up in rank to more advance classes
Best place to train BJJ in Philly!
Very friendly place with friendly people! Will roll again
Awesome people and awesome instruction!!!
Friendly atmosphere
