My wife still left me after ten sessions, but now I have more time to work on my boat, so I am happy.

I’m the type that really dislikes sharing my personally life with many people. I was dreading finding a marriage counselor mainly for that reason. I looked online for a Christian counselor and Shawn’s office just stuck out to me. He wasn’t our normal type ( we usually went to females) but our normals didn’t seem to connect with both of us. In the past, we would leave counseling and only one of us got anything from it. That is not the case with Shawn. He’s able to connect with both my husband and myself. Shawn’s very first words to us upon hearing our story back in Session 1 depressingly reiterated what we both already felt- “Your Marriage is Over.” Then, Shawn rephrased to say, “Your marriage as it stands right now is officially over.” He immediately began giving us guidance, providing tools, outside resources, and even his own personal contacts that stretched and grew us first individually and then as a couple. I have been to other therapists so why him? What makes him so different? If I were going to wrap Shawn Maguire up in a neat little box to sell to a potential client I am certain I would fail at the task. But when someone comes to me hurting and asks who I would recommend, this is what I share:I have brought all kinds of things into Shawns office- parenting issues, marital issues, anxiety, depression, grief, abuse, and other struggles from my past. Some were very heavy things. During one of these appointments I asked Shawn how he does the work he does. How does he sit through the stories, the struggles, and the suffering of others and still be able to come back to the office the next day? I am not at all sure what I expected him to say, but his words in those next moments deeply impacted me as they revealed much about his heart toward the people he serves and his surrender to do the work he has been called to do. Shawn said, I keep in mind that it is God who heals, God who saves, and God who restores. I provide opportunities and context to work through and rely fully on God to do the healing.He could have voiced a list of degrees, expertise from training, and experience from years of practice as a counselor building himself and his abilities up, yet in humility he chose instead to draw attention to God and give all the glory to God by saying that while he is available to be used of God, it really is God doing the work. And that, my friends, took all the pressure off giving me the confidence I needed to know that I was in the right place for healing. It assured me that I could show up with all my stuff and find him in the trenches beside me waging war in prayer and encouraging me through the battle, not standing up at the top with a flashlight shouting orders and telling me if I was doing it right or wrong, knowing God was going to be there in the midst leading the steps toward victory and freedom. That is the difference. You feel it in the atmosphere of that place as soon as you step through the door. So what are you waiting for?

Shawn uses a different approach than I do in my Counseling practice and I genuinely believe he offers something great! For anyone seeking faith to be intertwined into their personal growth process, I recommend him!

Working with Shawn was an extremely unique experience. He amazed me with his incredible insight and genuine, God-centered encouragement. Shawn is full of energy and enthusiasm, truth and non-judgemental guidance. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars was that I think I felt intimidated by his big personality and confidence, which was in stark contrast to how I felt about myself at the time. I am so grateful for Shawn and the guidance he has provided me and my son. I have recommended him to several of my friends. We first saw Shawn when my son (who is now 19 and a Sophomore in College) was going into the 6th grade. He was struggling with school and being bullied. My first experience with Shawn was fix my son!! Most of the sessions at that time were with my son, but I did meet with Shawn a few times one-on-one. After about a year or so, we stopped seeing Shawn. I thought that we had done enough and all was good. I remember Shawn calling me after our last appointment and he told me that my son would rebel. I dismissed it!! Looking back, I sure wish I hadnt!! As Shawn predicted, my son did rebel. Things got so bad when my son was a Junior in high school that I called Shawn needing help with my son. Shawn remembered us and graciously started meeting with me. With Shawns help, he has walked with me as I started setting boundaries (something I had never done before) and made the decision to remove my son from our home. If you havent guessed yet, I am a single mom and my sons father is not very involved in his life. My son went to live with his father for the remainder of his Junior year and then with his aunt for his Senior year. During this time, Shawn has walked with us and has helped guide us during this journey of restoring my relationship with my son. I give Shawn a lot of credit, which is greatly deserved, but ultimately the credit goes to God. Shawn happens to be the vessel that God has used in my life, as well as in my sons life. Im happy to report that my relationship with my son is being restored. We still disagree and have issues, but we have learned and are still learning how to deal with those issues in a healthy and loving way! I am much better with boundaries (even though I still need work in that area), God has weeded out the unsafe relationships in my life and given me better, more safe and godly relationship instead, and I now see myself as worthy in Gods eyes. Shawn is definitely being used by God to help families!! But you have to be willing to do the work. :)

When I sought Shawn, I was having suicidal thoughts and I felt like I was living in a huge black hole with no way out. I was extremely shut down and depressed. I couldn’t make sense of what was going on around me and within me. I started out in marriage counseling with Shawn and it wasn’t too long after that that I started individual counseling. He knew that it wasn’t just my marriage that was destroying me, but something much deeper than that. I thought I was tough, but I realized that I was actually a huge scaredy cat! I was very timid and a people pleaser, and did not know how to set boundaries. I had constant negative thoughts that played out in my head. I feared people, feared changes, and feared myself, feared who I really was. From as far back as I can remember, I felt “alone” and have had a hard time developing friendships. I was a Christian, but really didn’t know God, or His Love for me. Love was something I didn’t understand, and I certainly didn’t love myself. Shawn started helping me understand why I had so many cracks in my foundation, the core of who I was. He helped me understand my core belief system and why it was faulty. He helped me start seeing “reality” for what it really was and help guide me through the lies that I thought were actually “truth”. One by one, the core beliefs that kept me in a destructive pattern of life were broken off and I started gaining freedom and peace in my life. I went from being paralyzed and feeling like I had no control over my life, to being empowered to make decisions and changes in my life. There is now room for God to move in my life. I went from feeling worthless, having no self-esteem, and fearing people, to a 40-something college student who will graduate in May of 2016. Shawn, with help from Holy Spirit, was able to set me free from the darkness I have carried for many, many years. Shawn has an incredible gifting in counseling. He has a heart to help people reach their God given destiny and have tools to climb mountains. As I stated earlier, he is very patient. He doesn’t “give” you answers; he works with you and continues working with you until you see the answers for yourself. This gives you the power to “own” the answers which will help make lasting changes, changes that now give you a new core belief system to work out of which will stop the destructive cycles that have plagued your life. He seeks Holy Spirit for guidance on what path to take for each patient. Every one of us are unique and it will take an individualized plan catered just for you to help you through your situation.
