Starting with the security up front to the 2 front desk receptionist guys and also the lady’s helping in the back checking in and out with Ollie. Super thankful! Excellent Service!

Please be very careful when adopting puppies from the humane society. I adopted from SD humane society Escondido campus. It was disclosed that he had been exposed to a dog with distemper, but was cleared and received a negative test. 3 weeks later and $8000+ of vet bills later, my puppy died after battling a tick borne disease (Anaplasmosis) kennel cough, k9 flu, and was ultimately diagnosed with distemper too and thats what seemed to kill him. He spent his entire time with me quarantined and never was around other dogs after leaving the shelter. I notified the humane society mainly to warn them that other dogs could have been exposed (another puppy got adopted thr same day I adopted my puppy). I never got through to a human, I left a message and they just sent me a refund for my adoption fee _ no one ever reached out to talk to me. I also sent an email, still nothing and its been 2 weeks now. On top of all of this I am now battling the insurance company to pay for vet bills and they may not approve my claim since he was exposed to distemper st the shelter (despite receiving a negative test). I am heartbroken. My puppy meant everything to me and I loved him dearly. Instead of starting a life with my dog, I am dealing with all of this with no help from SD Humane Society. I understand that humane societies are often underfunded and under staffed, and I empathize. but I adopted from this shelter because I wanted to support them.. Now I am left completely heartbroken, without a puppy, and without even a phone call or email or follow up.I want to add: the employees on the floor that day when I adopted were amazing. They were kind and nice despite a very busy, crazy day. I am more frustrated with the larger systems of SD humane society for not doing more thorough vet work and for the lack of response to me after such a tragic incident.

I am so appreciative of this dog park. There are 2 good sized parks available. They are separated as less active or more active for different levels of energy, but its mostly to provide a safer environment for smaller dogs. I have been bringing my puppy here to allow her to socialize and comfortably work up to playing with bigger dogs. I dont always feel safe bringing my small dog to any park, so I am really happy they focus on making all sizes comfortable here.

Try and adopt a dog here if you want your heart broken. Already left a review but they deleted it, most likely because they dont want people to know about this BS. I got approved for my dream dog but could not pick him up the same day because I live in San Diego and was working when they approved me. I called and left a voicemail stating that I was working but could be there first thing in the morning to adopt the dog. I call the next day after no response and they tell me that they approved someone else because I could not pick him up the same day. Like hello people have to work and cant just drop what they are doing to pick the dog up the same day. Maybe if they were open later people who work 9-5 could adopt a dog easier because with there same day pick up policy it makes it pretty much impossible. Also why is it ok for the people they adopted my dog to, to pick him up the next day but not me? Because the time of day?! Seems to me like they are picking and choosing which is not fair.

Adopted a very old and sick cat. I was unaware of all the health issues until I took him to a vet. Humane Society said he was 100% healthy. Requested to put down cat due to health issues. Staff said that I’m just the inappropriate owner for him and that they will rehome him again. After arguing with them over phone, they finally made the appointment to euthanize him. Even at the appointment they had such attitude and gave me disapproving looks for my final decision. They took him from me saying they will look him over real quick and then when they came back they said that euthanasia is the best option for him. I wasn’t allowed to say any final goodbyes or to see him before they did the procedure. Their whole attitude was very immature and made me feel uncomfortable about the decision and the fact that I can’t see him before the procedure. Makes me question if they actually did it...

Called once a while back when someone’s pet had gotten out onto the streets and they refused to get the pet unless it was injured. I couldn’t get the pet myself so I had to just let it go. I was devastated for the owners (who was not present) and for the animal that would end up in unfortunate circumstances.called today because there was an animal that was either in shock or paralyzed in the middle my road, alive but not moving...mind you Im in no way a veterinarian, again i’m told they will not go get the animal unless it is visibly injured or has broken limbs. I am told to wait it out and call later, another person who saw the animal said it had blood on its fur, so they call to inform the clear injury and they’re told that I must call them back. (why? i have no idea, why does it matter who calls when there’s clearly two witnesses to this animals trauma)I call them back clearly aggravated, and they suggest i bring the animal in myself because they have little staff. My car is broken down and the other people in my household are working on the clock. WE CANNOT TRANSPORT THE ANIMAL OTHERWISE WE WOULD HAVE. Eventually they gave in and sent someone, but they make it incredibly difficult for you to spark their interest on who they should rescue, it’s not like it’s their job right? bottom line is, people who answer the phones are condescending and inconsiderate, and they show no actual interest in the well-being of animals in their local communities unless it’s right in front of their noses.

However I come back Saturday morning at the same time as this dog was being adopted and guess what. The dog was being adopted by a male. Idk if they planned on holding the dog for someone else and lied or what the deal was. Then I also had wanted to see some other dogs and they gave me a reason why I couldn’t see basically any dog I was interested in. Saying there was breed restrictions for the area. If that was the case why would they have any of these animals if they can’t be seen.

Without actually physically having a list of the worst things that has ever happened, I will still say this would make the top 5. My husband, 2-yr-old son, and I went into this location yesterday night (12/3/16) and found a dog that was for sure a match in our hearts and home. With an open mind we continued our search through the kennels before we went inside to find that another family was having an interaction with Peanut. However, we stayed and waited to find out they decided not to adopt. Unfortunately, with the late hour so close to closing time, we were advised to return in the morning. With little sleep from the excitement, we did not just go back, we were there at 0930 and the first ones on site. Now, because I decided to hold open the door for two older ladies, while still leaving us the first to request an interaction... Turns out they were there for Peanut too, they just hadnt asked yet as they were struggling to find the ID # for the pup they were interested in. When the two employees behind the desk realized this, Pricilla, (who was helping them) went on to confirm that the ID# to be Peanuts, decided to put them on the list to go in; while the woman I was working with got up to see if Peanut had left for his vet appointment that morning yet. Although she was able to keep him on site, the other two ladies confirming that we were there first. She had them go in first regardless of the events leading up to what did in fact turn into his adoption. Leaving us heartbroken, cheated, angry, and hearing a whole lot Im sorry. Except for from the one who knew was to blame... So my advice is, if you find yourself in a similar situation either prepare to shove and kick your way through the door first. Otherwise, hope that Priscilla is not there anymore because the truth is, there is no common courtesy with her, no integrity, and is just by far a despicable person who does not deserve.... well let me stop here before I loose my mind again. Good luck to you on your search to find that special pet for you.

Unbelievable! We have a racoon in the yard, the animal - female- is not really energetic so we call animal control at this number. After 7 (seven) minutes of waiting I got Janet on the line who after some routine questions connects me to Julian (again with a minute waiting) of the dispatch center. After providing the requested data and location, they ask me to monitor the animal until they show up, which will be approximately 30 minutes. They ask me to call back in case the animal is no longer in my vicinity. So I check on 5 minutes intervals on the animal which is now laying down in the shade on the driveway for about 35 minutes. When I check again, the racoon is gone. So following the request of the dispatcher, I call back to animal control and... hung up after 11 minutes and 8 seconds of waiting. Your call is important to us is definitely a very empty statement here. If this animal was sick, it probably would be too late, it could even have walked to the nearest veterinary center by itself. While I understand one cannot expect immediate response, the least one can expect is : timely answers and .. if they had removed the animal in between the two check ups, a little knock on the door or a note. I dont doubt these people have good intentions, but I am glad I only had to call them once since I lived here.

Regarding the dog park. Horrible! I would have thought the Humane Society would know better then to use this rough, slick, artificial turf as ground cover for a park where dogs want to run and play. The dogs were sliding, slipping, and falling. This was only exacerbated by the fact that park is set on a steep hill. We were there for only an hour and our German Shepherd left limping. Upon inspection his paws were shredded, the pads holding on by a flap. If the Humane Society truly cares about the welfare of animals it will close this cruel park so no other dogs are injured while they raise money for an appropriate ground cover. Please!! If I bring my dog to the shelter will you treat his injuries for free as you are culpable?

Awesome place to bring in your pet or a found pet . Animals feel safe here ! Animals have a sense of knowing things like this & they srnse when you or they are in danger & will let you know as well as when they are in a safe place around other animals or people whom will help them out & make sure they are placed in a new safe enviorment !I had to sadly take 2 cats into The Humane Society & a dog. Sad for my family & I to part from our pets whom we cared for . But wow you should have seen them crying when I put them in their pet carriers crying & scratching trying to get out but as soon I drove into a block or 2 away from the San Diego Humane Society in Oceanside all of a sudden they were calm, sat still listening without making a noise at dogs parking & other noises around us .... But these barks were like happy barks, almost like welcoming the once scared crying cats into their new temporary home until their new forever owners came to pick them out to take them to their homes ! And knowing that as soon as we entered the San Diego Humane Society area the cats were as calm as could be made me feel like this would be the right place to leave them at & all the employees that were there were caring and helpful not only to my needed help of dropping off my pets but also caring & understanding to the needs & care of cats & other animals that were their . And helpful and understanding to make sure as to we all needed help with ! Thank you to the Oceanside Humane Society as well as to the Escondido Humane Society whom took in our dog Kodo ! Whom we aslso love & miss much ! I always remember I would be cooking in the kitchen & he always knew & would come right in ! His favorites were Spam & chicken ! I know that where ever they are they are happy ! They love to be loved & will love you right back ! Pets are amazing creatures full of love & understanding when given the chance !!!

Information and communication problems. They’re doing wonderful work but fail to relay the proper information to potential adopters. My family went to this location find an addition to our family. There were about 20 dogs available, but they have these information cards attached that explain the dogs, behavior, temperament, specials needs etc.We found one that we loved. She was a pitbull mix that was good with kids, a little excitable but just needed lots of physical exercise. She let the kids pet her through her cage. Was happy to have the attention. We let the staff know and they sent us to the office to speak with an adoption specialist. A young lady went over the basics and okayed everything then passed us up to another person. We were ushered to a little cubicle where another woman went over everything again in more detail. This is where is got really really weird. The “specialist” tells us that the dog is good with kids but she has a tendency to jump.We have a dog trainer living in the house and I let her know that this is a solvable problem thT happens with most dogs.We asked if we could meet her.Instead of directly saying “No.” I had to listen to the same spiel about her jumping problems.I asked about the placard and the prescreening, but she couldnt give me an answer. So instead of admitting that the papers were wrong, as well as the computer information, the woman skirted the option of a meeting until i figured out that it wasn’t going to happen. It was uncomfortable. It was unnecessary. If she had been up front, or the information had been correct, we could have saved a lot of time and heartache. We are well aware of the strenuous task of dog adoption. Sometimes it doesn’t work out. But this place made the task disheartening. The problems she talked about are common in most dogs. They are trainable. This specialist soured our experience at the humane society. We found our furrever family member at a private foster care group, who worked with us and communicated clearly. If a family is asking questions about a dog prior to making a formal inquiry, the information should be correct so that everyone can make an informed decision. The volunteers and workers should not be afraid of being honest about the pets that are in their care.

Kudos for taking care of the dogs. Bad bad experience trying to get a dog. The trainers seem to think that the dog gets to choose their new owner. If the dog in question is so timid then obviously it needs to get out and go home to more attention and love. If my wife and I were willing to show up twice to meet the dog, first time was a bust they wouldnt even let us see the dog and the trainers went home at 4:30 but their site says open until 6, then we are genuine and are going to assume the risks. This dog may be timid for its entire lifetime but that is a risk we are willing to take. Every dog I have had has some kind of neglect issues from their past, but with a little love they appreciate your time and attention. I dont understand why they are trying to keep the dogs for so long.

Hands down the worst place ever! And I used to work for a Humane Society, I was appalled at how this place is run. First off my dog was collected and I called them right away, they didnt answer and I sat on hold for 5-10 minutes. I actually hung up,called the San Diego location and had them transfer me. They were able to speak to someone on a different line and link me. By the time I got in touch I explained my dog was missing she was chipped, licensed and her coloring and what bandana she had on. The woman told me to check their website and I looked and found her immediately. I drove to the location, and the woman at the counter was training two new employees. She made me wait 5 minutes without customers in front of me. Once she addressed me I told her they were holding my dog, and that I was there to pick her up - mind you my dog had been at the shelter for only 15 minutes. She then informed me my dog was immediately vaccinated with everything and I went ballistic. I asked her why they didnt think to check her collar, her tags were there with my phone number, license and her microchip ID# along with her name. What if my Riley had just had her vaccinations a few days ago? She would have gotten ill by over vaccinations. It didnt stop here, the woman had the gaul to charge me. I told her not going to happen at all, they didnt answer my phone call, they didnt even bother to check the tags, they removed my dogs collar and put a ratchet one on instead. She said okay, fair enough, provide proof of vaccination and license which I did, however was confused by this request as they already loaded up my baby with innoculations... So then Im standing there for 15 minutes because she wants to continue to train the new employees. Now normally, Im patient and I understand they have to learn, but with the awful load of customer service I was just served, combined with the nerves of finding out my dog was missing and that I work overnight grave yard shifts, I was not so willing. So I told her, not to be rude, but can you train them later or explain what youre doing after you process my case, and explained I work overnight and should have been in bed two hours ago. She complies. And then... AND THEN... Continued to train the new employees. Finally once everything is processed she takes Riley out to me. And I ask her where Rileys collar and bandana is at and she looks at me with the blanket faces I have ever witnessed and then jumps back into action, as if she were a machine rebooting. She walks into a side office and then collects the collar and bandana and hands them to me. I put them on and tell the I dont want the ratchet collar and told her next time she could save the shelter time and money and their patrons time and money by checking the tags and answering their phone. MY DOG WAS ONLY AT THE SHELTER FOR 15 MINUTES!!! And it would have been less if they bothered to answer their phone, considering there were three people working the front desk. Oh and when I asked to speak to the manager she informed me it would be a minimum 15 minute wait. If for some reason I choose to adopt, Im driving all the way to Yuma to do so. This place is disgusting and does not care about their animals, the wellfare of their animals or their patrons and customers! The Humane Society of America will be hearing about my experience.
