I am a brand new rider and know very little about bicycles. I had done as much research as possible before going to Conte’s but nothing beats talking to an avid rider. I met Sandy and we had a great discussion about my interests, preferences, cost. Sandy had some excellent advice. He showed me a great bike and got it set up for me. I have thoroughly enjoyed riding this bike since I purchased it two days ago. I greatly appreciate Sandy’s knowledge, understanding, and helpfulness. I had a great experience. I took my bike to Contes after having been in my garage for about five years without use. I stopped riding it after having multiple surgeries on my knee and ankle. I thought the tires had dry rotted as both front and rear ties were deflated and appeared worn. The derailleur was hanging and the chain was coiled up. I wanted to get the bike repaired and usable so my grandson could ride it to school. Jessica and Stuart did an excellent job with my bike! They replaced and repaired new inner tubes and chain mechanism adjustment; as well as realigning and tightening the hand-braking assembly. Everything is working perfectly now.Five Stars and Two Thumbs Up!

I love Contes, I have been to the Newport News location and Va Beach location(Pedro was great). I have always been given great customer service. As a minority and a bigger rider, I always felt respected and was given the proper attention when purchasing my bike or having any issues with my bike. I will continue to use Contes in the future. They are the best in the 757!! The Newport News location is my fav!! Wish it was as big as the Va beach location.

I depend on my bike as my primary mode of transport. Woke up the other morning to a rear flat and decided to try Contes just up the street from me at Tech Center, Newport News for repair. I Consulted with Sandy when I got there and he gave me a fair price to complete the repair, along with a new tire. I just cannot say enough about the quality of service and professionalism i experienced at this store. Stuart was the one who repaired my bike and also helped tweak a few other things and Jessica the manager could not have been more accommodating. I went into Contes to get a bike serviced and started looking at other mountain bikes. Jennifer (an employee) answered my questions and showed me the Specialized mountain bike and told me to take it for a spin. I did, loved it and bought it. When it came in Jennifer called me and I went in to pick it up and she was ready to go. Jennifer answered more questions and helped me customize the bike and I was out the door. Between Stewart and Jennifer’s knowledge, you can rely on getting professional and courteous help to accommodate all your biking needs. We went to Conte’s in Newport News today to have some tires replaced and the grandchildren’s bikes generally evaluated. Wonderful experience! Jennifer, store manager was outstanding. So helpful and attentive to our every question. We could not have asked for a better experience than we had today! We will definitely be going back there in the future. My wife came into the store knowing what bike she wanted and even ended up buying one for me! The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. I have to say the sales associate Megan went above and beyond to get us a bike rack and get our new bikes home the very same day. Very happy to have given this store our business and Megan made it very easy to do so.

They serviced my daughters bike very quickly and she loves the adjustments they made to it. The shop in Newport News isnt huge but the selection is pretty good. Most importantly, the staff were always very friendly and knew tons about kids and bike development. We had a great experience.

These guys from Contes helped us with renting road bikes for doing the Virginia Capital Trail. They provided us with all of the necessary stuff and were very friendly and flexible for the bike returns, to accommodate to our flight schedule constrains. I recommend anyone doing the trail to stop by this shop to get all of they need. The trail is superb! We did two thirds of it, up and down. 65 miles. Virginia plantations landscape is wonderful!

This was the first time I had to use the insurance package I purchased with the bike. Service tech, Joseph, quickly rebuilt everything that was broken and got me back back on the trail. Good customer service thanks.

We bought my mother-in-law a new bike (from a different location) as a surprise and the first time on it the derailer bent into the spokes because it was not adjusted properly when assembled. We took it To Contes on a Saturday and they had it fixed within the hour. We were so grateful because we live out of town and needed it back quickly to avoid another 3 hour round trip to pick it up to return to her. Thank you so much Contes! You saved our weekend!

Last month, I had a less-than-desirable experience with Contes that caused me a fair amount of trouble. (Broken bike on the side of the road, had to walk it out several miles kind of trouble.) I was really unhappy with the incident. I wrote to the manager about the experience, explaining everything that happened, and told them how I felt about it.The very first thing the next morning, the manager (Jennifer) called me on the phone. Not only did I receive one of the most heartfelt apologies that Ive received from a business, but she promised to make it right. They bent over backwards to fix the problem and to make sure that I was happy. She turned a never going back there again into a happy customer.Mistakes happen - its how you own them and recover from them that shows character. And that counts for a lot in my book.

I called during open hours they say someone will be with me shortly, the phone rings like three four times and then a female computer voice comes on says goodbye and hangs up on me. How rude. They wont get my business! And we were going to spend thousands too.

Today 5/1/2020 was the second and last time I will ever visit Conte’s Bike Shop due to the fact that both times I was “helped” by the same employee and was treated rudely; today took the cake. The employee I’m assuming is the owner because only the owner could get away with such poor customer service and still be employed. Today I attempted to buy one simple bike inter-tube. I was wearing a face mask due to COVID-19 where the owner unlocked the door and acted as if I was inconveniencing him. However directly behind me was a second customer without a mask who was, based on his clothes and car, an affluent person. This customer was treated with a hearty greeting and a welcome. I was ushered to the back of a sales floor, handed an inter-tube then shunned and forgotten while the second customer and the owner held a minutes long conversation while I was expected to remain in a corner like a good little boy and be ignored. The aforementioned conversation only stopped because I handed the item back to the owner and said I would spend my money at another bike shop. The owner then stated that he was only trying to provide customer service. I guess he meant a working stiff like me gets no service while only Conte’s rich customers get good customer service. I now, and always will, shop at Free Wheel Bike Shop over on Warwick. There everyone is treated with respect regardless of the class.

My sons bike was in pretty sad shape so we took it to Contes for service. He hadnt ridden it in awhile and it needed some serious love and attention. We certainly got that at Contes! They were amazing start to finish. They gave his bike a very thorough inspection. They made sure everything fit him and made adjustments as hes grown since we got the bike. Contes made sure it fits him now and taught us how to adjust it when he gets bigger. They even found a manufacturers defect in the bike and reached out to the manufacturer to get a new part. They treated our military family like we were VIPs. We couldnt have been more grateful. Although they offer a military discount, the care and attention they gave us were worth so much more.They had several customers in the shop when we walked in and I was in awe listening to the vast amount of knowledge these folks have about all aspects of bikes and biking. You can tell that each person that works there genuinely loves and is passionate about biking. I caught my son and husband ogling two modified bikes as they left the store that were really, really impressive!Im not very savvy about bikes and stuff like this, but I know when Im being treated like Im a person who matters and not just a dollar sign. I cant tell you the last time I entered any business and felt that way. I got that today.

Have been a Conte’s customer for decades, my first bike was purchased at their old NN location. Recently returned to the area and needed pedals dialed in for my new road bike. The staff was super helpful, happy to help, and had awesome suggestions for spots to ride. Happy customer for years, and always feel welcome when I come in. Thanks guys!

I brought my rear wheel in with a broken spoke shortly before closing. One of the two mechanics in shop, Neal, jumped right on it. He replaced the spoke, trued the wheel and installed a new tube while he was at it in no time. Great job!

May 15th 2020...we waited patiently outside and once inside, I felt like I was bothering this guy and Im already new at bike riding...so sorry I went to your store to be felt like I was bothering him. Trust me, my friend and I wont be back and I regret going. Ill be taking my business to the other bike store. He was not friendly at all!! If your store is so small..then work on better FRIENDLY SERVICE

I brought in a couple of old tires that were dry rotted and from a much older bike... Contes found some tires but told me it might be a little while before they arrived... We were called in less than two days and told they were ready. The tires were installed on our rims, and waiting for us when I arrived. Super service! Just great!

Absolutely the best bike shop in the area. I went to several different shops the same day and was treated like I wasnt important enough because I wasnt looking to spend $1000 on a bike but at contes I was greeted as I walked in by Dave and he took his time and showed me what they had and all the pros and cons to each he was such a great help I ended up purchasing for me and my wife both!! Shop with confidence they are good people.

This is the place to get your bicycle. The manager of the store, Jennifer and her team helped me so much to get my bike (BMC roadmachine 02) to get on the road so much faster than I expected. All the tune up and services were done for the bike. And I truly appreciate their hard work to satisfy customers. I live in VB, but I would rather come to Newport News, this particular location. Not all Conte Bike shops are same. Thanks again guys.

Dropped my bike off to get a tune up and some adjustments. One of the employees called back to let me know that I didnt need the full tune up package, but I did need a new chain and a few other adjustments. He let me know this to save me a few extra bucks which I really appreciated.Seems to be a great bike shop.

It is evident this establishment is anti-equality. Employees are able to exercise their own personal views and deny access to customers of color but do not hold non customers of color to the same standard. Buyer Beware.

I had recently purchased a used road bike from a friend of my father-in-laws and needed to get it sized properly. Sandy did an amazing job getting my bike sized. I was surprised how in-depth just the shoe portion of the fitting was. All in all it took about 50 minutes and now my bike is way more comfortable. Sandy made good recommendations of some purchases that would make my bike even more comfortable (i.e. a new seat), but didnt pressure the sale at all. Overall it was a great experience. I went in the shop a few minutes ago wanting to purchase one or maybe two different types of unicycles and the help was so upsetting I had to post something in the review. I was going to let it go but seriously the service was so sickening I just had to say something my God the guy was on the phone when I entered the store I wasnt even acknowledged when he got off.I just wanted to purchase a couple of unicycles thanks for ruining the rest of my wife and I evening I didnt get the guy name thats how upsetting it was. I really hope the owner sees this post believe me you Im not writing this just for attention its just so SICKENING with all thats going on in the world today what does it take to treat each other with greater respect.

I had a problem with a new bike seat fitting on the post, and not being able to adjust the seat angle. I had even purchased a new post, which was the wrong size. I took the seat and the post into the shop, the technician showed me how it adjusted, using the old post, and didnt charge me for his time. I will remember that, the next time I need bike supplies or services!

Even with all the work they had during this shut down, Contes got my bike fixed up quickly and at a reasonable price! Thank you guys for the work you did. I cant wait to get back on the trails!

The mechanics are magicians! They resurrected a 20+ year old Gary Fisher bike that brought back a lot of family memories. Now my grandson is the proud owner of a fully restored retro mtn bike.

Needed a new seat and the tech was helping and using the tools and stated I needed a new one. Brought the seat and asked can he finish using the tools so I can attach the new seat...he stated he can do that and I asked can I use it since i’mStanding right there...he stated no can’t allow it...but you took my money and you can best believe you won’t see me again and I will share my experience with my group of bike riders.

My wife and I stopped by here on our way out of town for a cycling challenge with a last minute flat on my wife’s front tire.Cannot say enough about how pleasant the staff was - Charles greeted us immediately as we entered the store and offered some great solutions right away. Neither my wife or I are experts when it comes to cycling but we enjoy it and felt extremely well taken care of and respected.Tommy did a great job working on our bikes and we ended up choosing to replace the tires and inner tubes on both bikes. He had great advice as to the specific tire and had everything done very professionally and very quickly.My wife and I were worried we would be scrambling to try and get her bike into working shape. Instead, we ended up very happy with both a phenomenal customer experience and new tires all the way around. Highly recommend this shop!!!

We have purchased from Contes in the past and have been very satisfied, I recently purchased a more complex mountain bike for my son, and I was really impressed with the way the staff took their time setting the bike up to fit my son and explained all the features. After a one-day shakedown, my son had more questions and noticed a couple of things that needed adjustment. We stopped by Contes, expecting to make an appointment, but they took us right in, made the adjustments and had my son take a test ride to ensure that he was completely satisfied. Throughout the process, we all were. Great Job!

It was my first time going in, I just kind of really walked in just to look around to see what type of bikes they had clearly. Wasnt what I expected, but what I saw was, oh, so nice a little pricey, but I realized that these are professional bikes even electric bikes, very impressive inventory. The gentleman who greeted me actually had a customer at the time, but he did take a moment to acknowledge me and ask me with anything that I needed. He could help with any questions. Lauren helped me early today to decide on a bike. She was very polite and helpful. She help me pick one out, had the seat adjusted, and install and extension so that handle bar was at more comfortable height. They then allowed me to ride the bike around the parking lot and help adjust it further to make sure it was everything I wanted.

Charles was recommended to me by a friend who recently had a great buying experience with him. He was awesome and very accommodating from start to finish. Not pushy in the least bit and still friendly even when I told him I wasnt ready to buy immediately. My husband and I are looking forward to going back in the near future to buy a pair of bikes from Charles.

I am very happy with the service I received from Charles and Sandy. Buying a $3000 bike is a big investment and their help was crucial. Im excited to be riding again, now that I have a bike I love. I appreciated their patience and thoroughness so that I wouldnt end up with something that didnt work for me.

The guys at Contes go above and beyond to fix your bike and get you back on the trail! They got Fox to custom build me a new rear shock (at no cost to me) after they were unable to repair it and a replacement was unavailable due to the age of the bike. They even let me borrow a brand new Santa Cruz 5010 to ride one weekend when Fox was delayed repairing the shock. They will take good care if you!!

Gave these guys 5 stars 7 months ago and would still do the same. Recently had a couple warranty issues with my bike and they helped out with little to no hassle for me. This past week, I broke my bike again and the warranty would not cover it. Charles did all he could to help me find a great deal on another bike. This review will be long so to start with the bottom line: If you are interested in getting into biking - Go to Contes. If you need a new bike - Go to Contes. If you need bike maintenance - Go to Contes. In fact, if youre reading this, next time you are nearby - Just Go to Contes!I have been going to Contes on and off since I was young and they were located on Warwick Boulevard. I moved away for about a decade but came back to the area about two years ago to find that they had moved. I went to the new location and immediately decided I didnt like it. It was smaller, felt more commercial, and didnt carry much of the more eccentric bike selection I am into. Over the past 2 years however, they have (through a series of interactions I only entered into because they were the last choice) proven to me that they are the best bike shop on the peninsula.About 1 1/2 years ago I was shopping for a new bike for my wife. Over the course of shopping I spent about an hour in Contes having a wonderful conversation with the salesperson about everything from new bikes, to the local bike culture. Although I didnt buy a bike from them, they were by far the friendliest and most engaging shop I talked to that day.About 6 months later I ended up in a situation where I needed immediate assistance with maintenance on my bike before I led a boy scout ride the next day. I went to every other shop first only to be told sorry we wish we could help but we are too busy. Contes initially said the same but when I told them why I needed the bike they agreed to fit me in somewhere during the day if I left the bike with them. They literally saved the day for 12 boy scouts.Fast forward to 2 weeks ago and I was looking to ship a bike I had just sold to someone online. Due to a work obligation I was leaving the country in 3 days and didnt want the buyer to have to wait 2 weeks until I got back. Once again every bike shop I called couldnt possibly fit me in, once again I called Contes last. Once again, they could help. When I commented about how lucky I was there was no wait he told me oh we have a several week backup, but obviously you cant wait that long, so were just gonna fit it in somewhere during the day.After these occasions I can honestly say Im a little embarrassed about my initial judgement of the new Contes. From now on when I need something, or when I just feel like soaking up some bike shop vibes, Im going to Go to Contes.

Contes Bike Shop is such a gem. I recently took my bike out of storage and realized the gears werent switching correctly. I decided to take it in for maintenance. Tommy assisted with taking a look at the bike and fixed the issue in 15 minutes! While I waited, Lauren helped me get squared away with the right road bike shoes. In addition, she took the time to teach and practice with me on how to use the shoes. Sandy and Charles got my bike adjusted to my legs and shoes. They both took the time to show me how to clip and unclip my new shoes and pedal. Great service I brought my bike in for a tune up and got it back quickly. Answered all my questions with no hesitation. When I picked up my bike it didnt fit on my bike rack and they allowed me to leave it over night. Great people and awesome service.
