This place is awesome!The space has a cool vibe, and the staff is always friendly and attentive.Akira is a hair genius, when I met her the first time she did not need a big explanation of what I want, and my cut was exactly what I wanted.And, John the owner, is a very genuine man and his customer service and attitude is great. This place makes you feel good about yourself not only on the outside with their great haircuts but in the inside too.I was there during the pandemic, and I like the steps they are taking to provide a good and safe environment.Looking forward to my next haircut and beard trimming on my next visit.Thanks for the great experiences and see you soon.

I have been a consistent customer of Lukas. His demeanor is quiet and professional, but if you know how barbershops work, just like great decades past, he and the other staff members open up quickly and candidly. Get to know your barber. Dont just come in, sit down, tell them what you want or leave it up to them, and move on with life. Eventually, they will know who you are and what kind of cut you normally receive, but will ask just to double-check, and dont print out a style profile like some other big name places do. John has personally texted me, called me, and emailed me, just to make sure that I received the service I wanted. I will continue to be a patron and my tip will always reflect the service received. Keep up the great work Lukas. Itll be time for another cut here soon.

The Proper Barbershop is a hidden gem that really needs to be showcased as a prime place for a haircut on the peninsula. I’ve been to multiple barbers there and have never gotten less than a great cut! Their barbers are very professional and take their time to get you looking sharp. Big plus for me is their selection of Layrite brand products that are typically harder to find. I’d recommend this place to anyone.

When i walked in I noticed how clean and bright it was in there. Wasn’t super loud like some barbershops are. Victor was very professional and gave me a great cut. Would highly recommend. The haircuts are good, excellent service from the barber and very kind (1000/10), but it is not worth $30 PLUS tip. As a male, I think that $30 for a haircut in Newport News is fairly high, especially during a pandemic, when I can go to other barbers and the haircuts are between $20- $25. If they included other services with the $30 haircut for example, beard trimmings, a hot towel for your face, ect. then maybe I would go there again, but in the meantime there are other competitors out there for cheaper and they provide better services. They claim they cant provide beard trims due to COVID, but frankly other shops do beard trims and follow CDC guidelines, they also have them posted on the doors. I will not be going back to these prices anytime soon.

Great spot for a perfect haircut! They were able to squeeze me in after a cancellation and Jen gave me an incredible haircut! Being able to text for scheduling is very convenient and time efficient!

First time customer, found this barber shop through some word of mouth Facebook post. My old haircut place was just a place to get your haircut, in and out. I’ve never had very good advice on what to do with balding, and the best advice I got from other “barbers” was my own from Googling. I was tired of just getting any old haircut.I explained my dilemma to Victor. He took the time to listen, and offered some really good advice based on what I actually said and what I would like. I don’t remember the last time I had someone pay so much attention to detail as if they were actually taking pride in their work and how I would look. He even took time to talk about the product he was using and how it would manage my hair. He didn’t stop there, afterwards he talked about what he did and what direction would be good to manage my solar panel.If you’re just looking for a wham bam thank...sir, this may not be for you. If you have pride in self and want someone to pay attention to you as a person, this barber shop is it. You’re going to pay a little more, but you get what you pay for.I think I’ve found an actual barber, my barber. Good job guys! Your shop and crew are awesome!

First time customer. Had Victor cut my hair. He was very professional, patient and very meticulous when it came to cutting my hair. Everything else was also great about this place. Even the spray water they used to dampen your hair smelled effing amazing. Sanitation and hygiene was also top notch. Definitely worth the price and recommend you try this place.

Called and let them know were stuck in traffic. We arrived 8 minutes late to have the barber locked out of the barber shop with a bad attitude informing us he can no longer do the appointment. No apology, no reschedule, nothing. It gets 2 stars only because we didnt have the opportunity to judge the haircut.

My son just got his 3rd haircut from Victor yesterday.As always he did an amazing job!I asked Victor if they get many children and he said not really.This is a shame. He does 100% perfect haircuts and is very good with kids ( my son is 6)The shop is smaller, but its clean and professional. The experience and quality of work has been above expectations and my son James will have Victor for a barber for as long as Im the one paying.

Finally had the opportunity to get a real cut and beard trim from The Proper Barbershop! I got tired of getting my hair cut from the cheap big chains that rush and dont provide a good value for their service. Plus there was never any way in hell I would let them touch my beard. These guys at Proper Barbershop provide not only excellent service but in my opinion great value for what youre getting. James, the beard sculptor, took his time and was super personable- clearly a master at his craft. He nailed the cut I wanted and I have no reservations about him trimming my beard again. John, who greeted me, was enthusiastic and welcoming. I highly recommend The Proper Barbershop to any bearded or bare faced man check this place out. I will be back and wish this small business the best as they grow!

This is a nice place. Hector cut my hair well and we also had an enjoyable discussion during the cut. You can tell these guys care about doing quality work. I had to wait a while past my appointment, but the manager noticed and gave me a discount, which I appreciated. It says a lot about their business practices and bodes well for their future.
