Wet behind the ears, I arrived in the market for a Manhattan apartment with no experience whatsoever working through brokerages to find a rental. I had no idea, having come from San Francisco (where a smile and a handshake with the owner of a flat will, in many cases, seal you a very amenable deal) that, simply by responding to a Craigslist posting, I would quickly find myself at the mercy of a host of ravenous brokers, some of whom would have no reservations about shaking me down for every penny to my name. I went from feeling like a kid in a candy store to feeling like a legless swimmer, bleeding, in a pool of sharks. Thus, it came as a most welcome relief to have met Philip, from New York Casas.My exposure to the game of brokering is limited to what few days it took before I found a home, but it was enough for me to become aware of how competitive, confounding (to would-be tenants, if not to some of the brokers themselves!), and, at times, ruthless the business can be. Especially after reading numerous Yelp reviews about the very individuals I was working with, I was overwhelmed with distrustfulness, and certain that my best interest was the very last priority of my so-called advocates. My paranoia was probably an overreaction, but I was sure that I would not escape some kind of beguiling or another.Most of the brokers I met seemed as though the business had exacted from them a heavy emotional toll. It seemed likely that they had not experienced a lot of success in the game, and thus, by necessity to survive, their will to act truly in the best interest of their clients had been eroded, their passion (if ever there was any) deflated, and their ethical posture bent, or even crippled. They were despondent, and their pessimism made me feel that they would be unlikely to find me a suitable home, and that it would somehow be my fault.But in every aspect that I have described about these hardened souls, Philip was a profound exception. Where they were dismal, Philip was buoyant. Where they sought advantage, he sought mutual value. What they lacked in sensitivity to my preferences for a home, Philip possessed, with strong intuition, after showing me only one apartment. It was clear that Philip had a different take on life, a sharp edge, possibly many interests outside of the game, that he plays the game the way he wants to *because* he wants to, and that he takes good pride in his work. I would be genuinely surprised if his satisfaction with a deal were ever to surpass the satisfaction of a client.Interestingly, I did not find my apartment through Philip, because I was still oblivious to some of the rules of the game (which effectively prevent a client from being shown an apartment by one broker, then accepting a lease through the advocacy of another broker). Nevertheless, I was so impressed by his professionalism, intellect, and taste, that I felt compelled to backtrack and write him a sparkling, 5-star review.To any friend moving into Manhattan, or relocating to a new apartment in Manhattan, I would happily refer Philip, thereby sparing them from a heap of unnecessary anxiety.
