He is humble, the first to volunteer that he doesnt understand something and willing to take responsibility for the uncomfortable - a trait and ability that creates an enormous amount of space for parties to move through their own discomfort, so they can focus on having the conversation they want to have.In our mediation, he not only asked the types of general questions that allow parties to recount and explore the conflict but also seamlessly transitioned into gathering specific information, the kind that maps out whether an agreement is viable or not. He honored the self-determination of the parties throughout, communicating with a directness that reflected his respect of the parties and their needs as well as his confidence in maintaining the integrity of the process. His thoroughness and patience in supporting the parties as they navigated their conflict resulted in a representative and comprehensive agreement.

When mediating with the New York Peace Institute, it’s normal to have never worked with your co-mediator previously; you meet them for the first time ten minutes before the mediation begins. While I have now mediated with Alnoor for hours, it was clear to me from the start that he would be an incredible mediator to work with and learn from.Because I’ve mediated with Alnoor on one case with multiple sessions, I’ve had the privilege of watching him adjust his mediation style to meet the needs of the parties without sacrificing his neutrality or their self-determination. He leans directly into the difficult emotions at the root of a conflict and creates space for the parties to honestly examine their experiences, asking questions, reflecting critical information, identifying shared interests, and moving parties to consider and create their own potential outcomes. Thoughtful, steady, and curious, Alnoor is a deeply effective communicator, both checking in with parties to honor their work throughout the process and collaborating with me to be of the most service possible to the people present. I know Alnoor Maherali from our time together at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. I took an Advanced Negotiations Skills class with him under the famed Professor Brian Mandell, an intensive two week session of 13 hours of daily theory then practicum in small groups in the philosophies of negotiation and mediation. I had the good fortune of being in a session in which Alnoor acted as the sole mediator. It was a complicated issue to do with warring groups, deep divisions and unresolved grievances in which Alnoor represented a neutral body (i.e. the UN). One participant in the scenario was particularly (and purposefully) an emotional, uncompromising stalwart who simply did not want to budge to reach an agreement. This impasse went on for several hours, but Alnoor smoothly and brilliantly talked this person off the ledge while gaining the trust of both sides of the dispute, *and* helped us all eventually reach an agreement we could all live with, including the difficult actor. It was an impressive feat to watch, and I am sure Alnoors abilities in this regard are partly inborn, but also partly due to his previous career as a Canadian diplomat. I am personally so pleased that Alnoor is using his great gift for mediation now full time, and cannot recommend his services highly enough.

I had the distinct pleasure of taking part in numerous negotiation simulations and workshops with Alnoor at Harvard, where he always impressed me with his commitment to investigation, communication, and relationship-building. As a volunteer mediator in Boston-area county courts, I often find myself thinking back to Alnoors thoughtful approach to conflict. Always a pleasure to work with, Alnoors experience as a diplomat was always on display as he built rapport across the negotiating table and managed the conflict-resolution process.
