First of all let me tell you a little bit about my son hes the kind of student that would never raise his hand to answer math problems in school . Now he constantly knows all the answers and his math teacher is pretty impress . Our family is so thankful for the wonderful service that Mathnasium of Montclair has provided to our child, my son now helps others who are struggling in math and that is quite impressive because my son feels so confident and now he has friends who look to him for help . This makes me teary eye because now i know my son is happy and does not have to struggle with math, The highlight of his day is when he goes for tutoring because everyone their really cares about the children and that is priceless.
Wonderful experience for my sons in Middle School. The staff is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and flexible. I feel my children are helped and challenged in a relaxed atmosphere where they can ask questions and grow in their math skills.
I am amazed at how much difference Mathnasium has made with my daughters confidence in math since she started there last summer. She now thinks that math is her best subject. She tells me that she finishes her math work in class early and helps her classmates work out some problems. I dont know how they do it, but Mathnasium somehow makes math fun for my kid. She enjoys going there so much that she asked me if she could go there twice a week in the summer. ...and as long as we can make it work, well keep letting her go.
Its a huge piece of mind to hear that my daughter feels like she is finally getting it She attends without arguing and comes out with a smile.
I love everyone at mathnasium Montclair . I could see my daughters improvement since day one . Now shes confident about math and finishes her homework so fast . Excellent team !!
Mathnasium is basically math-daycare. If you want your child to actually be taught, go elsewhere. If you want to dump your child off for an hour or an hour and a half in a math environment, then by all means, Mathmasium is the place for you.First there is the required assessment, which the child is given (for the nominal fee of $49) to supposedly determine exactly what she knows coming in. However the assessment is actually just as a crutch for the instructors to be able to sit there and basically not teach. For instance, rather than address an area of the assessment in which my daughter scored 17%, the instructors will instead give the child page after page of worksheets on an area in which she scored 75%. So for an entire hour-and-a-half session, the instructor sits back and does almost nothing while the child does the same type of problems over and over. Then when the child finishes each stack of work sheets, she has to wait (sometimes as long as ten minutes) for the instructor, who is either checking one or two other childrens worksheets or carrying on a personal conversation. Then when it comes to the instructor actually checking the worksheets, they often they mark answers wrong which turn out to be right. My daughter had a laundry list of examples of problems that were marked wrong and then overturned when she challenged the instructor. The instructors who were actually competent when it came to marking papers, still didnt do any actual teaching. Not only did they not proactively teach anything, but they didnt even reactively teach anything. Theyd mark answers wrong and then send my daughter off to do them again. Then even if the child gets them all right - ten stacks of worksheets, all answers correct, 100% - the instructor will still send her back with another stack of the same type. They wont move on to the next subject until the next session...at the very minimum! Sometimes my daughter would finish a session having proven hands-down 100% her proficiency in area just to be greeted with the same type of worksheets when shed arrive for the next session. In the whole time my daughter was there (ten 1.5 hour sessions), she learned absolutely nothing new. One time she brought in her summer packet - math work that she has to do this summer before entering 8th grade - and asked for some help in a particular area. Her instructor had no idea how to do it. The other on-duty instructor had no idea how to do it. They started googling it to try to find out. The Director, Ms. Angela de la Rosa came over and spent a very quick minute explaining it to the instructors and walked away. They still had no idea how to do it and basically shrugged their shoulders at my daughter and decided that she should just go back to doing the same worksheets, once again repeating the same work she already knew, over and over.I only let this go on like it did, because it was my wifes deal, my wifes money. My wife and daughter twice complained to Angela, but nothing changed. I had visited Mathnasium with my daughter months prior and I liked Angela, and we had spoken of my daughter actually having a free session to try it out. Angela seemed agreeable to it, but we had other things going on at the time, and we never went back. Then this summer out of the blue, my wife insisted my daughter was going there. I told her to do a trial session, but she didnt want to. I told her to email Angela when I saw how bad this place was run, but she didnt want to. So she wasted $500-plus (of her money, not mine), and she deludes herself that it was worth it for math practice LOL.So, if you still want to try this place, my advice is: (1) Ask for a FREE session before you pay for anything, including the assessment (2) If you join, pay by cc so you have recourse in case you need to try to get your money back (3) Do any complaints by email so you can show your cc company if necessary. To me, its not worth it to even try it. I dont think it is possible to keep this place on its toes enough to get your moneys worth.
