My daughter scored a 5 on her APUSH exam with tutor Dan. After being mostly online for a year and a half of US History she was worried she wasn’t prepared. Dan did a great job giving her an idea where to focus her efforts. She only had a few sessions and it paid off!

I was introduced to Tutor Shack by a friend and we have been very pleased with the results.We have a junior and he had taken PSATs and ACTs. He was flip flopping to figure out which one would been better for him.Once we got in contact with Josh at Tutor Shack our son decided to write the ACT. Best ACT Tutor! Josh was able to help my 11th grader get the ACT result he wanted in a thoughtful and efficient way (and while doing it all remotely). From start to finish, his method of organization and explanation is thorough and effective. I first thought about getting a math tutor for my son because he was going to skip a level in math. Then COVID hit and the schools closed. We signed up and got a fantastic tutor — Ener. He is so patient and clear. My son actually looks forward to his weekly tutor session, he has lots of useful assignments, and he is learning so much. This is the best one-on-one instruction my son has ever had. We will keep going even when/if our school opens up in the fall.

This place is fantastic. We had done SAT prep with our older kids, one through a group tutoring method, one with a private one-on-one tutor, and most recently with our youngest, two full rounds of tutoring at a different group test prep center. By far and away, The Tutor Shack has exceeded our results with any of our kids by any of these other methods. The tutors know how to get to the essence of the test prep, and Josh, who is a great teacher himself, knows how to match the right tutor with the individual child. Scheduling was easy and flexible, and the communication between the tutors and us as parents has been great. Josh did a great job for my daughter. We originally did a reputable online course, but the results werent as we hoped and going into senior year,my daughters confidence was shaken. Josh helped her regroup and redirect her efforts by identifying that she might do better with the ACT rather than the SAT. Despite having limited prep time before the ACT (about 4-6 sessions), my daughter went into the test feeling good and her results exceeded expectations!

I can’t recommend the tutor shack highly enough! My daughter who is a junior has been working with Josh for about 4 months to prep for the ACT. She saw him once a week for 1 hour. She also worked with other tutors at tutor shack on reading and writing both in person and by skype. We had to drive 30 minutes each way, so I was focused on whether it was worth the investment of time and money as it would have been easier to go with a local tutor. In doing my research on Josh and the tutors at tutor shack, I was drawn to them because I wanted more than an ACT tutor, as I was hoping the experience would strengthen my daughter’s study skills and grit in her approach to school. Josh has been an instrumental force in her life. He developed a great relationship with my daughter where he not only taught her how to improve her ACT scores (6 Points from her practice exam), but, more importantly, he was a big part of raising her goals and confidence. She has moved from an A/B student to an A student. Josh has a unique way of reading each student and customizing his approach to optimize the probability of having each client achieve superior results while boosting their confidence and work ethic along the way. Firstly, Josh is absolutely amazing. Within ten minutes he seems to have your learning style pegged, and stuff that seemed like total gibberish to you just clicks in your mind. He seems to be able to explain absolutely anything in terms that make sense, sometimes I dont know how he does it. The progress was immediate for me. In fact, all the tutors here are amazing. My student had an absolutely great SAT prep experience being tutored, focused just on one section. He needed a very targeted kind of work (especially on a sub-section of a section), so his tutor planned a program that paced him, kept him on track, and accommodated a very full extracurricular activity schedule. The student was extremely disciplined and determined in his study. I had three children take targeted sessions and Josh was able to address any deficiencies in their readiness. As noted by other reviewers, cost is a little pricier, but youll save money in the long run because you will need fewer sessions to accomplish similar results from cheaper competitors. Josh makes a quick and accurate assessment of needs and begins to address those needs immediately. The accompanying test prep materials were very valuable too.

We had heard of Josh from the Tutor Shack in Montclair several times and so grateful that we finally reached out to him! We have used Tutor Shack for the past few years for two of our three daughters for SAT/ACT prep and other targeted topics. Josh tutored my daughter for the SATs and her scores improved by 130 points!!! He was very responsive via text for questions and scheduling. My daughter felt that he was easy to work with, knowledgeable and good at identifying her areas of need. It wasn’t cheap but it was money well-spent in my opinion.

We started using Josh at The Tutor Shack in 2009 when our oldest daughter was a junior and we just finished with our youngest child, who was recently accepted to Georgetown, his first choice!! I cannot say enough good things about everyone at The Tutor Shack and have recommended them to many parents, who like us have used them for more than one child. All of our kids improved their scores dramatically after their time there. They are extremely accommodating, working 7 days a week and late in the evenings to accommodate high school students busy schedules. They even offer sessions via Skype! We tried a few other places before we found Josh and they absolutely did not compare. Most importantly, each of our 3 children found tutors they liked working with and they actually did the homework! All of the students we have sent there have had similar experiences. Definitely the best tutor center around!!

Amazing experience with several different tutors! Tutor Shack is extremely well run, easy to schedule, and Josh always sends reminder texts which is key! My daughter used Tutor Shack for chemistry, calculus and the ACTs and her scores dramatically improved in all areas. Josh specifically does an amazing job teaching math concepts so kids don’t just memorize formulas. He is full of jokes and connects magically with some very stressed out kids. Knowledgeable and friendly staff have proven results: test after test (two diff math courses w diff teachers) and SAT improvement. Josh makes learning fun and breaks down the material so it can be understood in its components - much easier to understand than being inundated with equations and trying to memorize them all without direction. Great help in both changing my view on the subject AND improving my performance in class (two grade levels!) and boosted my sat score significantly.

The Tutor Shack is absolutely great for many different kinds of help. Its convenient, reasonably priced and the tutors are extremely competent. From SAT prep, which several of our sons friends have done here, to help with specific courses or upcoming tests, its been a real asset. This past year, our son, a junior in a private high school, missed HALF of his school days due to serious medical problems. The school was pushing for him to repeat the year, which he was adamantly against. We were frantic. He is extremely bright so we decided to try to get him caught up and enlisted the help of tutors in multiple disciplines at TS. Happy ending: he was able to finish the school year - with all As! Josh and staff were VERY helpful, accommodating, concerned and competent, yet relaxed - a perfect learning environment! Josh and his team are fantastic! My daughter not only struggled with the test content for ACT but was suffering from severe test anxiety. Josh worked with her on strategies to help her stay calm and relieve her testing stress. In addition mid way through prep for the ACT after looking at her strengths and weaknesses they re-assessed and pivoted to focus on SAT. She did some practice tests and Josh put together a program to focus on her weak areas. Needless to say she only had to take the SAT once because she hit it out of the park! My two daughters went to the Tutor Shack between 2010 and 2016. They were tutored in calculus, chemistry and ACT test prep. Josh and three tutors on staff guided my kids through subjects for quiz prep and homework for comprehension. Tutor Shack was an absolute key to their success in understanding the subject matter and what teachers expected from students at Montclair High. ACT test prep was instrumental to their success. Tips from Josh were incredible. For example, Josh told both my daughters to warm up with a sample exam one hour before at home before taking the standardized test. He told them that English would be the first test subject and he guided them through how to warm up to demystify and lessen their anxiety. I cannot recommend Tutor Shack enough either as a weekly tutor session or a fill in the gaps if you give them a few days notice. I give them a raving and rousing A+++

And Joshs work with my high schooler over the summer resulted in my sons ACT score going up FOUR points in the upper score range! Thats a success!

I cant recommend Tutor Shack highly enough. My sons used John for all levels of math from Geometry through AP Calc. We had weekly appointments, but John and Josh were always really accommodating if we needed to move our appointments around to deal with test and sport schedules. They were invested in the kids success and it showed. Josh seems to be able to find the perfect person for every need. We were happy with the tutors he paired both boys with for standardized test prep and help with individual subjects. Two hours with a grammar specialist a week before the SATs resulted in a 200+ point jump from one SAT to the next! While we had scheduled time each week for math, Josh could always be counted on to find a tutor to work with them even for one or two sessions in any other subjects. When we had emergencies in the form of a test the next day and something wasnt clear, a phone call to Josh or John and the crisis was always averted. I look at the money I spent at Tutor Shack as an investment in my childrens education that paid dividends with lower stress for them and an extra measure of sanity for me. Money well spent for sure!
