I was just looking. Might add a third dog I have two now sister and brother getting old want them to help train a new member to our family/pack. It is user friendly. Easy to figure out how site works.
Fostering and adopting from SHH has been a great experience. They truly care about the animals. We have now fostered 3 and 1 turned out to be a foster fail. Attached are a few pics of the dogs we have worked with. While I have said that we are a foster fail, we still havent completed our adoption process. This is a good thing since they prefer not to proceed with adoption until the dog is is clear of medical issues including spaying and nudering them. For some, this may be frustrating since you may expect to adopt the dog soon after you meet it but it may be some time before you may fully adopt them.On the second foster, the dog ended up getting adopted within a week (so the process can also go by quick) but he turned out to have some underlying issues. The adopter reached out to SHH and because the issue was existing before he was adopted SHH performed the procedure for free. With this in mind if you are adopting please keep in mind that sometimes the foster doesnt have the pet for long so its worth keeping an eye on them, just in case anything medical comes up.Keep up the great work SHH!
We recently adopted a Labrador Retriever puppy and couldnt have been happier with the her! She is loving, caring, and so well behaved already. We owe this smooth process to the foster parents, who we could tell right away loved her the way we were going to love her. The transition from Foster Care to us was so smooth and the Foster Parents gave us so much information about our new pup. We could really tell our puppy was in such good care! In addition to giving us information about our puppy, they helped us with steps along the way. It was our first time adopting a rescue and we were pretty clueless as to the process. They answered any question we had about the process and helped us get in contact with people who they have worked with if they didnt know the answer. We were a little concerned about the wait and response time with the organization at some points. After a couple days of no communication, we came to find out they were out of the office for Junteenth. We were wondering why no one was answering our emails and if our potential pup was adopted before we had the opportunity to move forward with the process. I do suggest that the organization maybe has a kick back (out of office) email if all employees are out for a holiday so customers are aware and not waiting anxiously like we were. Once they were back in the office Monday, it was smooth sailing from there! They were responsive and moved quickly!
My family looked at Second Hand Hounds. Early in the process, we noticed that the organization is not entirely transparent about their animals and is not entirely honest in their communication. As a result, we decided to go a different path. I would not recommend Second Hand Hounds to any of my family and friends.
Thank God for this place and what they do! I adopted my best friend from them!!
I am a first time foster with SHH and it has honestly been an amazing experience. My foster pup has a bad leg due to a gunshot wound and weve had to make frequent vet visits because of it. They have been great at communicating with us on his condition, his treatment and what to tell future adopters. To top it off, he was a great fit in our home and we really couldnt have for a better first time foster dog.SHH also has a thorough adoption process which I appreciate as it helps to make sure these guys go to a good home. All the coordinators have been pleasant to work with and hope you all know you are doing a great job!
We rescued a dog with SHH and they were amazing to work with. Yes, the application process is a lot, but they do that purposely to do their best to ensure adopters are a good fit and likely won’t be returned. I’m fully in support of this and didn’t mind one bit. I highly recommend supporting them in any way you can. Adopting, donations, volunteering, etc. They’re doing wonderful things! Also, I’m leery of any critical review complaining they weren’t chosen to adopt.... there’s a reason. They may not like or understand, but there’s always a reason. Just sayin’!
After considering Second Hand Hounds to foster, I saw that the organization is not entirely honest about their animals. Then they pity you into adopting the animal. I imagine that in some experiences things work out, but why take that chance when the organization lacks ethics. If you ever hear back from Second Hand Hounds after your raise your concerns, they provide you a generic response that is a little off topic and that does not fully address the concerns.
Foster a puppy is a whole new experience. People are very nice, helpful and professional. They provide absolutely everything you could need for your dog. Good quality things and very useful. They are doing a great job!
I love this place! They take the most unadoptable dogs and find them the perfect family. I encourage everyone to donate here!
Welcoming staff great medicine. Felt like family.
Just picked up my dog today from his foster mom and the adoption process was so smooth and easy! I loved being able to go this route and will definitely be adopting from SHH in the future! I also have recommended them to some other friends and family in the area.
They do a great job with animals and the rescues. Please look to rescues inside of fashion dog. You cant go wrong
Another well meaning rescue group that fails the animals who never find a forever home as well as their community by making the application process nothing less than ridiculous. The application process could be streamlined, I have filled out NINE applications because that take about 30 minutes each with irrelevant questions. I have 9 acres of fenced in yard, have fostered 2 dogs successfully in last 2 years, have had dogs my hole life, have older kids, a dog would have all the love and wonderful life with us but 9 months later and 9 applications I’ve been replied to twice and no follow up. No “hey will keep your application on file” you have to restart everytime abd what irritates me is when you apply for a dog and a month later ITS STILL AVAILABLE. I mean at what point does the whole mission of “rescuing”–to find as many good homes for as many pets as possible–become lost when when people like this are the gatekeeper and making the process too exclusive.
I fostered for SHH, and that process was a great experience so I decided to adopt. The initial communication was good, but when I was the first to reach out to the foster to visit the animal, her response was she was waiting to hear back from other applicants and then make her decision as to who would be the best fit. Ok, I understand that so I asked her what her criteria was as I fostered through SHH. If I was good enough for them, why am I not good enough for her? It just didnt make sense to me. Also, finding the right home for the animal should be a collaborative effort between the foster and the animal so if you limit their experience to your biases, how are you to know? I contacted the adoption dept and silence. SHH didnt even address the issue. This experience has left me bewildered and I will not be supporting this organization going forward. I wish them all the best.
Weve adopted two rescue dogs from SHH over the last five years. They are so wonderful! SHH is dedicated to saving dogs from high-kill shelters in the south and bringing them to Minnesota where they find the best fosters to care for them while matching them to their perfect forever home. We love our rescue dogs! Thank you, Secondhand Hounds!
Great response and communication. Didnt adopt through them but will suggest them to others.
I never been here before but the dogs my family has gotten have all been so sweet and a great addition to our family. My old dog Josie and I
We are so thankful to secondhand hounds. They received and cared for hotdish so we could bring him home to a loving forever home. He is amazingly wonderful. The entire process to adopt him was well done and their team works tirelessly to make impossible situations for dogs good. Jordana, Emily and Cassie...Thank You. We love Louie (formerly known as hotdish)
Very unethical practices by Second Hand Hounds. Second Hand Hounds provides a false narrative to what happens to their animals. Second Hand Hounds does euthanize animals. They will guilt you into adopting / donating money. Avoid!!!!!
I visited Second Hand Hounds in Eden Prairie for the first time as a potential volunteer. I was impressed by the cleanliness and openness of the space. They are a very well-run non-profit whose first concern is the health and happiness of the dogs and cats that they rescue.SHH is a foster-based rescue, meaning that the dogs and cats that they receive do not languish in cold, lonely cages. Instead they get sent to safe, warm foster homes who teach them that people are good, peeing outside is good, and toys are fun to play with. When you are interesting in adopting an animal, you look online and read their profile. The foster parent will come out and say things on the profile like Not good with cats so if you have a cat and are looking for a dog, this particular dog might not be for you.Unlike in other rescue non-profits, you dont just choose the dog or cat, they allow the foster parent to choose the future forever family. There is the option for a meet-and-greet with your family and furry animal to ensure that this adoption is the right fit. This is a good way to prevent dogs from being abandoned in the future. While the adoption fee is high, it includes all the shots, surgeries, and spay/neuter procedures. The foster parents are not required to pay for anything, they get free food, carriers, leashes, etc. They just need to provide the love and training to get them ready for their forever family. If you are interested in helping animals, please feel free to volunteer. Volunteering is perfect for those people who cannot afford financially, spatially, or time-wise an animal but still want to help. Perhaps a family member has allergies that prevents you from adopting but you still want to help. Perhaps you are a young college student or a retired senior citizen whose housing situation is not suited for an animal.
Love that they care for animals, but the staff is horrendous. The foster stalked me to where I had to block her from everything, and one of the coordinators tried to ruin my business because I had a different opinion than her.
One of the best MN rescues. They do not adopt out dogs until they have 100% treated all their medical issues. They even just took care of a poor dog in Kentucky who had been shot in the face with an arrow -- they brought him up here to get surgery at the U of M. Such an incredibly organization to use their money and resources to help dogs like that in need (check out @eros_journey on IG to follow his recovery story!)
I have a friend who volunteers for 2nd hand hounds-Bryce. His stories and photos of these pampered pups have changed the way I view shelters in general. Im sure theyre not all as good as this one, but I know they really take care of all their animals wonderfully and make sure they all have a fighting chance at finding their forever homes. I cant take on another fur baby right now, but when I can, I plan to give my support to Secondhand Hounds! ❤ Thank you for all you guys do. We need more people like you in the world!
We adopted a 3 month old coon hound pup from SHH and the process was very smooth. The foster parent brought Sweet Potato (Now named Jerry) over to our house first to see if he was a good fit and was very supportive after the adoption. Now almost 4 months later we are blessed to have him as part of our family. I highly recommend SHH.
Had my Harley from them - he was an awesome dog - miss him everyday!🥺🐾
Great organization, excellent diligence in screening and making sure the welfare of the animals come first. We adopted two cats and continue to donate and support SHH.
I applied to surrender a cat I found in my garage. I received an email that my application was denied - without any explanation. I then responded asking why I was denied and the girl said that they couldn’t take anymore special cases because of his urinating outside the litter box. If they would have actually read the entire application and medical history, they would’ve learned that was because of his UTI, which has completely cleared. I responded to their denial email that I was willing to foster him until he found a home (which was also included in the application ((that they never read))—that I just needed help in finding him a home and they said they would get back to me. Nope, that never happened. I was ghosted by Second Hand Hounds.
F0ster homes for adopting. Dogs and cats,. Online viewing
We were looking at adopting out first cats ever and found Elsa and Annie (Sisters from the same liter) and fell in love with them. We were able to go visit them and knew we had to have them. From the day we found them online till the day we brought them home was just over a week. They were fast to respond when emailing and fast to send paper work. We were very impressed and would recommend them for anyone that has never adopted before as they kept us informed on the steps needed to do next.
I adopted my Che-Wienie a year ago. Her name is Eloise. We call her El. I haven’t owned such an affectionate dog in a long time. She hugs me, sits with me, sleeps under my covers with her head on my chest🥰. She loves her older Maltese sister and especially her cat brothers. This, by far, was the best adopted experiences I have had.PLEASE SUPPORT SHH❣️
We just had a most excellent experience working with Second Hand Hounds on the adoption of our little kitty, Minnie. The kitten had been fostered so we were able to talk to the foster family to know more about her personality and tendencies, so itd be a good fit for our 5-yr-old daughter. Second Hands Hounds went the extra mile when some extra medical care/monitoring was needed with the kitten at their facilities after it became sick just after we received it. The people at SHH were SUPER CARING and kept us informed about how the kitten was responding. Now little Minnie is a happy, growing, bouncing, purring lap cat ... just ideal for our household. We cant speak highly enough about the job Second Hand Hounds did to make this all work.
Amazing people that truly love and care about their animals! Ive worked with and met over a dozen of their foster families and in all my years working with the humane society and other rescues, this is the best one hands down. Everyone in the process show their priorities are the dogs and not the bottom dollar
I was looking to adopt a puppy, and how they “pick” people to adopt is an really awful process and not fair.I have many years of dog experience, I adopted my first dog who recently became my ESA, and am a great dog owner.I religiously would wait until Wednesday’s (the only day they would post available animals) and be one of the first to email about a specific puppy.I did this for over a month, taking up my time, energy and getting my hopes up. My application would be put in a “pool” of other applicants and the fosters would decide who would adopt.I do live in an apartment, it’s spacious and it’s across the street from the dog park and a huge park. I walk my current dog at least twice a day, he’s very active. I was denied again and again, and when I reached out the coordinator said to keep trying. I know I was judged on living in an apartment, which is totally not fair or correct. I plan on moving within a year to a house with a backyard.I decided to put my time and effort into an actual decent shelter and adopted a wonderful puppy from there. I was able to send my application in and was picked right away.Thoroughly disappointed and disheartened when trying to adopt through SHH. It’s not at all what they post on social media.
I adopted two dogs over the last 3 years, great experience and great dogs!
Fast response.
They are amazing!
Such a great organization to be part of. Fostering is made so easy and they truly trust their fosters to find the best home for the dog. Good communication and volunteer opportunities. Always putting the animals needs first! And now, we adopted our puppy through them. The process was so easy and everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful.
Great place to adopt a dog!
An amazing program with kind and caring staff. SHH makes it so easy to care for the dogs. If you want the joy of having a dog around, but maybe cant commit to being a forever home, try being a foster!
I have been a long time supporter of SHH until I found out a few important things. One, with an abundance of resources, why are they not helping more animals? It is not hard to figure out how many more they could save as long as they dont pay the founder so much money. Traveling around the world for months is unheard of in the rescue world. Secondly, the publicity is always focused on them. Why not share the spotlight with smaller rescues to help them receive more donations? Lastly, if the whole purpose is to save as many as possible, why wont they help smaller rescues by giving advice and tips to make their dollars go farther and to provide assistance with marketing? So I can easily say they dont do enough. When you live a fairly decent life of luxury as well as have an abundance of resources, they could clearly do more. Of course I expect to get harassed for being honest. Too many followers and not enough people who will step back and see the whole picture. I truly hope the greed of this rescue will end. Until then, most of the rescues will live and survive dollar-to-dollar since they truly want to save every life.
I recently became a foster for SHH and love it! They have been so easy to work with and give you the supplies to make your foster feel comfortable in your home.
I love that they are trying to find homes for these pets but I cannot agree with their pricing. You can buy an 8 week old puppy for the same price. Drop it down a bit.
Of course its great. Who doesnt love puppies? Everyone here is very passionate about their job. Its just want you want in a rescue.
With the passing of my doxie Sassy Ann on January 1st, 2020, I had lots of food, etc to donate. I wanted to make sure that the neediest dogs received the items. My daughter told me to check out this shelter. I was impressed with how the pages are laid out-there are easy to read. Secondhand Hounds takes in the animals, shows them love, gets them the medical attention they need. I will be donating my items to them. In the future I will be choosing an animal from Secondhand Hounds.
Secondhand hounds is an incredible service, that makes sure dogs find good homes. They Foster and care for a large variety of dogs. I recommend them to anyone looking for an animal. All dogs you rescue through them are well loved and healthy.
Have heard so many good things about this rescue. However. Ive reached out to them and not heard a reply back. Its been well over a week mow.
Secondhand hounds does amazing work! They facilitated a miracle by pairing the dog we adopted, a puppy mill breeding mother whose puppies were born prematurely and died, and a litter of 5 orphaned puppies. She nursed them and raised them from 2 weeks old to 10 weeks old and all found forever homes! The foster mom that cared for the dog we adopted and her adopted puppies was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, diligent, detailed, and patient.
They do not answer their phones
No one better.... like getting a dog with a guarantee..
Great and quick communication, very open about everything they know about the pet. We adopted our sweet girl from here a few weeks ago and were so happy with her! I definitely recommend this rescue to anyone I know looking to adopt!
Any place that cares for animals is okay with me. My sister has adopted several dogs and theyre all very sweet. Thanks SHH
They do wonderful work!
It isnt a physical location. They have a website and have adoption events in the area. They have an impressive number of foster families in their group. That is best for the re-homed dog. The foster parents can help match to the prospective adopter.
Love my rescue pup, benji
Even during these uncertain times, SHH was fast to respond. I am happy to support their mission.
I wanted to see all the dogs that were up for adoption and was unable to see all of them otherwise it was very informative on how to adopt or Foster or volunteer or whatever very informational
Bringing adoptable pets to the Twin Cities proving any type of dog to meet various needs. This organization is very involved in the community and cares so much about homeless pets. I even have a fur baby from them! Check out their site and adopt-dont shop!
I needed help with a rescue I got fill out forms and wait not pleasant experience at all the dog needed a foster to save him he did not get the help he needed
Secondhand Hounds is the quintessential and premier rescue group in all of Minnesota. I wish rescues across the country would follow their lead! Every year they continue to grow and find new ways to save animals. I was fortunate to get one of my dogs through Secondhand Hounds and have been a huge fan ever since!
Always take care of their animals. I foster and my foster is unadoptable and they never lack in care for him. Even tho theyll never see a dime from him........hes needed surgeries and special meds and theyve never failed to provide that for him
Great experience!
A beautiful place to walk, bike, and explore. Lots of construction happening now that should be complete in July 2022.
We have had such an amazing experience throughout the adoption process with Secondhand Hounds! Nothing short of wonderful customer service. They have made this process so quick and enjoyable!
Theyve made it very difficult to adopt. We ended up going to a breeder we found in the news paper.
I don’t want to say SHH is bad, since all animals deserve a home. So I don’t want this to deter anyone from adopting a pet from them. I will warn you though, be sure to take your pet to the vet right away and get blood work done! My cat was deemed healthy, though she had been very sick before. All physical exams came back great, I decided to get blood work done. Now it turns out that my cat may have cancer. I contacted SHH, they basically said “sorry you are having this problem” and was done. My biggest point is to be deligent with looking into and checking the health of the pet. Get it all done with in their window, blood work too. With that said, the adoption process was smooth, the foster I met with was great.Update: Please take the time to discuss this with me instead of brushing off my attempts to contact you all. I’d be happy to go over the vet records with you. Which policy is it? Every animals gets blood work or you can’t provide the proper tests for each animal?
It was open there are no animals at this location. The pets are in foster care. However they do have show, where they bring the wonderful companions.Best to go to there website for information. As I arrived I was greeted by jenny the office manager whom gave me a friendly warm smile and directed me to there site and gave me a date they would be there next gathering to see there inventory of pets. Yet there site has pictures.
I am sure this is a great organization and they love animals. I rate it a 3 because of a negative experience we had with a foster parent who made a subjective and snap decision on our ability to care for a pooch without talking to or meeting us and, we feel, treated us unfairly. To our surprise the foster parent ignored the requests of Second Hand Hound staff to contact us to discuss his or her concerns. Our rating is based on solely on the fact that we feel the process can be improved.
Great communication, and a wonderful Foster couple to partner with. This organization is very transparent and fair. We had a wonderful professional experience and added a great doggie to our family.
Great at facilitating adoptions and fostering! For fosters, they provide food, vet services, toys, and many other things that help avoid any stress from housing a dog for a bit.
This place is disgraceful. The employees are very rude and should be reprimanded. They dont answer their phone and dont call you back. I went into the office and the girl I saw acted dumbfounded and didnt seem to know what she was doing. She kept looking at her cell phone and texting when I was trying to have a conversation with her. Very unprofessional. I dont remember her name, but she had brown hair.Edit: this place just proved more of their stupidity. Obviously, I was there before February.
Phenomenal company. Hands down does the best for their pets and wants the best for the owners and the hosts. We got our dog, Emma, from there and they didnt allow us to get her until the vets cleared her. They came to our house to check it out to make sure it was the right fit for the dog. The process to adopt was easy and honest. Love this rescue and always give them a shout out when we talk about our sweet little Emma.
I got two young dogs through this organization - a pit/lab mix and a Chihuahua/lab mix. They were obviously well cared for, fostered in loving homes, socialized, and the organization did a good job making certain medical records and home checks were properly taken care of.Their application process isnt bad, either. Apply early so that process can finish before you see the dog or cat you know everyone else will want too. :)
I adopted my two fur babies 😻 from a wonderful foster through Secondhand Hounds! I highly recommend SH as you know the animals are being well taking care of in a loving home.
Adopted our pup - great experience!
They rescue pups, and do a fantastic job of it. Need I say more?
Did not have the dog we needed for our home
Wonderful people doing great work for the Furbabies.
Im an SHH foster failure. My wife and I fostered our beloved Seymour over 10 years ago, adopted him a month later and he has been part of our growing family ever since.
This is my first time volunteering for Secondhand Hounds and will be my last.I signed up to transport a dog coming in from Mexico from the airport to the Secondhand Hounds office. Her flight landed at 12 am today, so I was given a door code to access the office after hours. I got to the office with the dog and the code didnt work. I was holding a 10 lb dog who was shivering like crazy in the -3°F temperature in one hand and trying the code with the other hand. Didnt work. I went around to all the different doors of the office, not just the intake door. None of them worked.I tried calling several people at Secondhand Hounds (the ones whod coordinated this transport with me). After being at the office until nearly 1 am, I decided I had no choice but to take the dog home. Finally, when I got home, I was contacted by someone at Secondhand Hounds, who told me that the door codes had been changed too early. This was grossly irresponsible and resulted in me being forced to take care of a dog that I do not have the space and other resources to take care of. Im now feeding this dog with my own money at my tiny studio apartment at 2:20 am.I hope the dog isnt too traumatized and I hope she finds a good home, but Im never associating with Secondhand Hounds in any way again. This situation could quite easily have been avoided, and if the transport volunteer had been someone who couldnt provide the dog a place to sleep tonight, it couldve gone very very badly. Im not even an approved foster for this organization, but what am I supposed to do when they literally locked me out of the office in the middle of the night when I was supposed to drop this dog off there? Their incompetence has caused this dog to have to endure even more confusion and instability than she already had, and put her in danger by effectively locking her out of their building for her first night.Adopters beware. This is how this rescue handles their dogs before they get to you. Adopt from Animal Humane Society instead.Edit: Wow, Secondhand Hounds responded and blatantly lied throughout their response. The person I talked to on the phone did not offer to meet me anywhere. I was told that I had to keep the dog overnight and bring her in the next day. Further, I was not offered compensation for anything by anyone at Secondhand Hounds.
I recently adopted a 7 year old rescue from them. They responded quickly to my emails & texts. Our new little fur ball is adjusting great with the support of her foster mom Andrea. I feel like we have a new family member & little sister to our big dog. Lady Bird is awesome & SHH helped bring her to us.
My family rescued a dog through Secondhand Hounds a little over a year ago. They were very easy to work with and are thorough to make sure the animals are placed at a good home. If you are looking to adopt, I would definitely recommend them!
Great place
This place truly cares about the animals in their charge. With a thorough evaluation system for both potential foster and adoptive pet parents I feel confident the animals are going to the best possible homes. They provide amazing support to their foster families including supplies, vet care, and general advice and do as much as they possibly can so they never have to turn away a pet. ALSO, their new facilities are AMAZING!
Great organization!
Dont let your children get excited about adopting a dog from this group. We applied to adopt a dog and never heard back from them. I am only posting now because I know others who have had the same experience. There should have been no issue with our application as we have foster dogs for years and met all their requirements. Six weeks later, I noticed the dog was still posted, so I emailed back asking why we were ignored. Well, we got some lame excuse about some sort of email mix up, even though they had read and passed along our application. Then I find out the dogs foster parent maybe didnt want to give up the dog ...which is fine, but take down the dogs posting from the websites. When I replied back, they suddenly changed the criteria regarding this particular dog and since we were not living within fifteen miles of the foster parent we were black balled....lame.After some correspondence with this group it is my opinion that some of their foster parents are just trying out dogs until they find one they want to keep or they seem to be animal hoarders.I think they may even just post pictures of animals that will never move out of their foster homes, just to get donations.I applaud groups that place unwanted dogs with families, but this group needs to clean up how they go about the business of finding families for dogs. I know a family that just gave up and bought their dog from the pet store because no one would even get back in touch with them.... sad for the dogs that need homes and sad for the families trying to do the right thing and adopt from a rescue.
They care deeply about the dogs they rescue. The foster program is an excellent way to transition the dogs into their permanent homes.
