Lisa is so friendly and answered all my questions I had about living here! The apartments look so nice and clean and love the location!
Lived here during the summer of 2020.Washer didn’t wash, dryer didn’t dry, and maintenance wasn’t much help. Dishwasher never worked, but all other appliances did work well (though they were dirty). AC never worked, and despite maintenance being called multiple times, the problem was never fixed and our electric bill was over $275 split between three people per month. One perk was the TV with cable and furnishings and cable hook ups in each individual room and included WiFi and other utilities. Bathroom was really dirty in my unit, specifically the shower and bath.About a week after I moved in, I was sent a letter about violating a visitor policy, even though I hadn’t. They send it to all roommates even if only one roommate has violated, and it put my lease in jeopardy. They threatened to put me on “probation” and end my lease because of this, despite me not breaking it. They don’t really vet who lives here. My “hand-picked” roommate constantly smoked marijuana inside of the apartment and on the balcony despite multiple complaints to management, so apartment constantly stunk of weed. Her boyfriend was always over and never wore clothes, and they threatened any roommates who “challenged” them. Management did nothing despite multiple complaints. When it was time for her to move out at the end of the summer, roommate claimed to not know how leases worked and fought with management until the last hour of the last day of move out. She left most of her stuff behind, forcing me to clean up so as to avoid their outrageous charges.Especially avoid staying here during the transitional period between summer move out and fall move in. Student workers and outside employees will unlock your unit and room without knocking. On three different occasions, workers came into the space without knocking, one time interrupting my zoom class.Homeless people often slept in the stairwell and harassed people for money and/or drugs. Many people smoked cigarettes and marijuana in the hallways and stairwells. As many people have said, snow is never plowed and there is never any parking. It’s not near any bus or train stops, and there were often homeless people begging at the corner where you must walk in order to be at the nearest bus stop. Finally, if you’re a COVID science student like me who often has to do at-home labs and dissections, do not stay here. Pay the extra money to have your own space somewhere. There’s no room for fetal pig or sheep brain dissections or agar plate procedures, unless you want your room smelling like formaldehyde and blood and roommates contaminating your refrigerated plates and extractions. This was an experience, for sure. It encouraged me to work harder so I could afford to live alone in a slightly nicer apartment. Think long and hard before signing a lease.
Worst place I lived in so far. I strongly recommend to stay away from this complex. I leased a room as a re-let. The last tenant specifically emailed the management to transfer his balance to my account as we decided. I confirmed everything before moving in. But, yet they refunded him and charged me the money. Now, they told me that I owe money even if it was a mistake from their side. There is no parking, tenants have pets even there is no pet policy. Pretty small room for that high price.
I have lived in this wonderful establishment for two years and my boyfriend has lived here even longer. I have received wonderful customer service here. It’s in a very great neighborhood, there are often great promos, you’re able to win many giveaways through their Instagram, and they have really fun resident events. It’s the best price for any apartment near the U of M, and all utilities are included except electricity which is really hard to find! Overall I would highly recommend living here.
I have lived here for 3 years. I would say its pretty cheap compared to everything around the area. Its close to the Light rail which is nice. Its not terrible and management is pretty great!!! Dont let the mean reviews scare you, this is the place to be!The front desk lady named Lisa W. is always a treat to interact with. Also Mack at the front desk is always good for an enjoyable interaction! University Commons sure has an amazing helpful staff from the GM to the maintenance people to front desk staff. Youll never find an apartment complex like this one
The place itself isnt bad, but the management takes advantage of students at any opportunity. Absolutely terrible.
I really enjoyed my time spent here. My room, the facilities, and the staff were all great. My experience with the staff was very positive. They were always transparent with me as a resident. The leasing manager, Tanoa, was especially helpful with questions I had about my lease during my time at UC. The maintenance staff kept everything well-ordered and clean. Great overall!
I signed the lease agreement before covid19 started. Because of covid19, I have to return to my home country until now.. NO FLEXIBILITY NO MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING given to my situation. Management only said that I have to pay or find someone else to takeover my lease. I have BEEN PAYING the lease since august without even living here. I have been marketing my unit with no luck because it is a shared room.. no demand.Everyone is dealing with a lot of trouble right now. But in this case, do I have to be the one paying for ALL of it?Since my email was not replied, I am resorting to this media. Thank you.
University commons isnt great, but it isnt bad. Definitely one of the better apartments if you want your own bedroom while still being close to campus and price is a concern. That being said, maintenance requests are sometimes just ignored and the hallways tend to smell and trash can be left for several days in the hallways before being picked up. They did get better about this once COVID-19 hit though. My apartment had clearly not been cleaned before I moved in, but that may just be because one of my random roommates lived here the year before so no one checked the apartment after the others moved out. The bathroom and window sills are moldy, dresser drawers dont like to close all the way. cheap appliances and the wood under the counters is bare and flakes off when touched. Not nearly enough outlets so youll need power strips.I will say, they do a fantastic job of choosing random roommates. I adore my roommates and 2 of them were random. Front desk is very nice and helpful, and the fitness center is convenient.
I lived at University Commons for two years. The apartments are clean and the community is quiet. Maintenance was responsive and the front desk people were always amazing. I never felt unsafe at University Commons. They unfortunately dont have elevators in the apartment buildings, but I knew that before signing the lease. They are also responsive when it comes to icing the sidewalks which was literally a lifesaver with 8AM classes in icy Minnesota weather.
Ive lived here for 3 years during my time in college, and Ive had nothing but great experiences. Im really lucky to have found such an affordable place to live in a great area by campus. Management and employees have been nothing but kind to me!
I love living at the University of Commons my experience since Ive been here been wonderful with everyone from the students to the Staff. There all are EXCEPTIONAL.
Good location, reasonable rent and great amenities (hot tub and grills). The security staff could definitely be overbearing at times.
Pros:-One of the cheapest spots for your own room-Never had a problem with maintenance or front desk staffCons:-Apartment was dirty upon arrival-Totally OVERCHARGE for electrical (up to $35/person per month) and parking-THEFT Issues: Me and my roommate had our bikes stolen (locks cut) and a friend had their apartment robbed (3rd floor) and car stolen from the lot!!-PAYMENT Issues: I had many problems with paying for rent on the website they use since it is super outdated and not user-friendly. You also had to go get a money order to pay if something went wrong on the website!-Appliances were not up-to-par (Dryer needed multiple rounds to actually dry clothes, fridge was TINY)-Classes (especially in psychology) are a 30 MIN WALK from here
I’ve lived here for almost a year now and have signed to live here again next year. I’ve really enjoyed my time here and love all the events they plan for us including resident bingo and holiday events! We also have had a great experience with the maintenance staff helping us out with any issues promptly! I also love the gym here compared with other apartments in the area because it is bigger and cleaner. Lastly the front desk staff is always so friendly and willing to answer any questions! 😊
If you are looking for a clean, safe, comfortable, and affordable place to live near campus, University Commons is as good as it gets! I really have to applaud the staff and management. Ive lived here two years and the student staff have always been so friendly, well trained and extremely helpful. The management has done a great job of increasing the safety of the complex, especially this year. The amenities are great, and they actual rooms are very affordable but not so cheaply made like most new apartments on campus. I have loved living here and could not recommend it more.
This is a great place to live. It is the perfect location- it is close enough to campus and transportation but the slight distance makes it very quiet which is always very nice. The staff is extremely helpful and is very attentive. The gym is convenient and the free printing and other amenities that the apartment has to offer are incredible. I would highly recommend living here.
Decent apartment for the price, but don’t expect anything to be shoveled or plowed in the winter. As a resident with a car my only option is to rent one of their shovels to dig my car out. I have worked as a plow driver and any reputable company would not leave the lot looking how it is. I wonder if they ever hire plow drivers or just make residents struggle to even leave the front door.
The university common staff are very nice and helpfull with other residents. I like how its close to the U of M which its nice and easy to commute from home to school. The Maintences people has been very helpful problems that had happen in my units and always on it right away.
Great location
Well-maintained amenities, great student life and atmosphere. Work orders are attended to within a timely manner and the front desk has great hours. Study room is slightly on the smaller end but it provides free printing services (paper not included) which is super convenient and makes all the difference. One thing that would make the University Commons experience much better would maybe be the addition of a bus stop nearer the area.
I love living in University Commons. It is a very homey environment. The layout I live in is two bedrooms and a bathroom on each side of the kitchen/living room, which is nice because it spreads out the people living in the space. Highly recommend choosing University Commons as your place to live!
My roommates and I were ROBBED (even though ALL our doors were locked; the thief got in by forcing the lock on our porch open). In the following and preceding days 4-5 apartments around us were burglarized. It got to the point that my neighbors and I went shopping to get wooden blocks to barricade our windows. However, then thieves started to BREAK WINDOWS. University Commons DID NOTHING to help us through this hard time. In fact, THEY TRIED TO KEEP THE ROBBERIES QUIET. It wasnt until a MONTH after the THIRD robbery that University Commons sent a VAGUE notice to ONLY A FEW PEOPLE to stay vigilant. It was dangerous, scary, and terrible. On top of that, our apartment was FILTHY when we moved in (THREE of my roommates and I had to spend 6 hours EACH deep cleaning), there was MOLD, RATS, and just awful customer service. Even after all this had occurred, we were still NOT allowed to cancel our leases, we had to find subletters if we wanted to move out.So just imagine going through FINALS week at the University, desperately trying to find someone to sublet a dreadful apartment, so that you wouldnt have to wake up every morning SCARED that you would get something stolen. Please do NOT stay here, at least not on the ground floor of the fourth building.
University Commons is a great place to live if youre a student at any of the surrounding schools! The location is wonderful, being right next to Hwy 94 and the Metro Green Line for transportation, a short walk from campus, and a bunch of food options within close proximity! The management is very helpful and want the best for each resident, I havent had any issues with them or maintenance. The quality of the apartment is really good for the price I am paying, and everyone is so friendly! Definitely recommend.
Horrendous place to live, homeless people sleeping in the stairwell, the amenities (pool, game room, etc) were never open. Multiple break ins into cars throughout the year. Should definite be your last resort when choosing housing on campus.
The office is always helpful w/ any problems I have. Maintenance is always quick to come when I put in a work order. Overall, a fantastic place to live.
A overall very good apartment with reasonable price and caring staff. easy to get to the light rail station. utilities in the room is fully functioning and useful. would consider renewing but I am moving out of campus next year. Definitely RECOMMEND!
Good place to live. In most cases, the staff members are kind and able to solve your problem in time. A little far away from campus, but still easy to find a restaurant within several minutes of work. De-ice team do their work during the snow days at night and they work really hard to keep residents safe, though sometimes the snow is too heavy to clean. I really appreciate their help.
Made the mistake of ignoring the negative reviews on google and thinking it cant be that bad. You need only look to the generic response by owner comments on all of these negative reviews to fully understand the kind of impersonal and money-focused service this company provides. If youre waiting for a wake up call or a sign to not live here, you can consider this review as one. Youll have a roof over your head, but do yourself a favor and find somewhere youll be happier.
University commons is a great place to live and has everything I need as a college student! The staff is super accommodating, especially Aubrey and Shanley! They are always willing to help and answer any questions I have!
I lived here for one year and I would not recommend it to anyone I know after my experience. When we moved in, our apartment looked nothing like the apartment they showed us on the tour. The furniture was old and very obviously extremely worn from years of use. The hallways and stairs are never cleaned in any buildings except the first floor of building one. They clean this hallway daily. The apartment they show on the tour to interested residents is on this floor, so I’m sure that’s part of it.The air conditioning and heat is all or nothing. Your room will be extremely hot with the heat on or extremely cold with the air.I lived in building four and we had a pest problem. We called the office and they brought in an exterminator. This exterminator told us that he had been in our apartment before, and it was a reoccurring problem. We had to email maintenance multiple times to get them to schedule the exterminator on a regular basis until the bugs were gone. Each time the maintenance people came in to check our apartment for pests, they made us feel like we were being bothersome for complaining. The snow is never plowed the day of. When it is plowed, they plow the snow in piles behind all the cars that are parked in the lot. I would see people shoveling their cars out of snow piles after every storm.Management is awful with communication. I signed a lease, and they lost it. I ended up having to resign the lease. Then towards the end of our lease, my roommate was going to sublease to an individual and then changed her mind. We told the office, and they told us this individual would not move in. They still gave this person the key because the manager we spoke to did not tell the student worker on duty that night. No one told us this new roommate would be moving in, and we woke up to a stranger in our home. When we complained, management moved them to another apartment immediately and claimed they mistakenly gave them the wrong key. Although they immediately fixed their mistake, this shouldn’t have happened in the first place.I would not suggest University Commons to students looking for an apartment after my experience. I now know all of the good reviews for this complex are written by their student workers.
This particular place does not deserve a single star and I urge you to do yourself a big favor by not living there. Especially if you are an international student. Because these vultures prey on students like you. Let me explain.Apart from being cheaply made and having an inconvenient location near I-94, where air pollution from traffic and nearby construction is plenty, this place treats its residents like the European settlers treated Native Americans. Taking advantage is their specialty. They have a fee for everything. Want to switch your room with your roommate? Fee. Want to re-let your room? Fee. Not to mention the sneaky fees they charge AFTER youve moved out like the installment of new carpet and cleaning fee. What if the carpet was already old when you moved in and the apartment was cleaned thoroughly? Why do you have to pay hundreds of $$? They dont care and you cannot do anything about it.You pay a security deposit when you sign the lease which is a common practice in many places. What is NOT common is having have to pester some incompetent moron for months via email before getting your deposit check back after you move out. They will charge you the re-let fee twice and when you call the front desk they will tell you that: we dont know anything about refund because it is handled by our corporate office in Texas. After months youll receive an email apologizing for inconvenience because their new accountant seem to have charged you twice without checking. The buildings smell like pot with the occasional puke decoration in the hallways. People leave their trash in front of your door. You might get run over by a car while walking into the building because there is no safe sidewalk. The buildings are built so close to one another that you can hear every drunken slur and cough from the opposite balcony or window. When you make a noise complaint about drunken and aggressive males screaming until morning, the front desk will encourage you next time to walk over to them and make friends.....because they actually might be a very friendly and fun people. If you get a crack in your wall all the way from the window frame, the front desk will ask you if you can see through it.Yet they will send you texts and emails urging you to Renew your lease today at University Commons & avoid the hassle of moving! No, thank you. I will move to California and will drive the U-haul truck myself if I have to....but I will not re-new my lease there. They will also call you and knock on your door. And, yes, I chose to live there so its also my fault. But you dont have to make the same mistake.
Location is great for students, a lot of nice restaurants and grocery stores nearby, 2 mins walk from metro train... Apartments are really nice and clean with all amenities included in affordable price. And, on top of that staff is very helpful and welcoming. Overall, it was a fabulous experience for me. :)
The location is great and the office staff are always willing to help with any questions.
Great area to live, a very quiet and relaxing place to come home to. Offers a hot tub in the warm seasons and a great fitness room. Would recommend, only issue is a little far from campus.
Stayed in few different properties around the campus and this is by far the worst. Bad experience ever since I moved in. Expectations weren’t met from what was promoted when we signed the lease, felt cheated. Had problems with air conditioning throughout the year (both heating and cooling system was off). Called regarding cooling system (whole unit have a temperature of 85 degrees during warm weather), but wasn’t given a solution. Even the hallway is cooler than the unit. -.- Was asked to wait for few days to solve the issue. Can’t wait to move out when my lease ends. The 1 star given is for the students working by the front desk. They are really helpful and great. Would’ve given 0 otherwise.
So far everything has gone smoothly.Office has been easy to deal with and answered any questions I had.Payments are fairly simple to set-up online, but I wish they had an option to auto-ad electrical overages.Any issues I have had they fixed within a reasonable time frame.Pricing is reasonable as well. The people who work at the front desk have always been great too.So, update.I had to move out and sublease my room for the remaining two months.I was charged a fee off like $50 or so to apply to re-let, thats fine, makes sense. But, a $250 fee for re-letting my room is just outlandish and ridiculous. And I found out when I received the bill, they didnt inform me at all. I removed all of my belongings and cleaned up after myself. This sort of fee when my rent was only $419 a month is just wringing me for money.I hope I dont get any more fees by the end of my lease and I get my security deposit back....
The literal owner of this place told us it was ok that we turned in our keys a few minutes late but then ended up charging us over $200 because our keys were “late”. Not to mention they came in without 24 hours notice and and didn’t clean the apartment before move in. And then they also have the audacity to charge for not cleaning our apartment even though we left it MUCH cleaner then the way we found it. Absolute garbage. I’m sure they’re automated robot will reply with “im sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay” acting like they care but they don’t. They just want to leach money from students who are already financially struggling.
Seriously don’t consider getting a place here. I just got an email from this place letting me know that the room I had planned to stay in is now unavailable a day before I was to move in. They offered me a chance to stay in a shared room instead, being a 26 year old veteran student it’s important for me to have private space. If you are considering signing a least with these guys are a parent don’t do it. Unprofessional and unreliable. Do this only as the last possible choice.Hope his helped and god bless.
The staffs are not friendly and really UNprofessional. The apartments are old and not clean, but you get what you pay for. Overall, not recommended.
Extremely bad apartment! Unfriendly management.Location is also bad.VERY UNSAFE! I went home at 2 am on a Tuesday night. Someone was lurking around in the first building in the neighborhood. When I tried to open the door, he started charging toward me. I barely managed to get in before he got me. Never live here. Your life is worth much more!!! Plus can easily get another place with the same price in a better location
Their staff is amazing! If you want to live close to the University for an affordable price, this is the place. Best prices in the area with great service from maintenance, front desk and management.
DO NOT LIVE HERE. they over charge for electrical, saying we spent over 200$ a month in electricity. They also charged us for taking garbage bags when we didnt leave anything in the apartment. They also charged me for visitor parking but I always handed them a check when I got parking.
It wasnt the best place Ive lived and its not the worst. Rent is cheap, but if you wait until later months to sign your lease youll get about a hundred dollars knocked off your rent which if youre a poor college student like me, that wouldve been nice to know. One of my roommates paid less than us because she signed later. Note for residents hoping to resign or sign!
My son just moved in yesterday with following observations.1. Air condition with very bad performance...2. WiFi Internet still not installed...I am giving two star based on first impression, Hope fully urgent action will be taken from management and will force me to change my review to 4-5 star...
University Commons is a great apartment for a sophomore-level student. The quality of living is significantly better than the UofM dorms. The best parts of this apartment are the amenities including the gym and pool. The location, however, is as far as I would want to be away from camping while having to walk to class. The only thing I would say is the dryers suck up a lot of the electricity budget. You will have to dry your clothes up to 3 or 4 times to get them completely dry. Also, the fridge and freezer space for 4 people is not adequate. For a 4-person, 2-bedroom apartment at University Commons the space is very tight. However, it is the one of the cheapest apartments on campus, so tight spacing is to be expected. Overall, this is a good 2nd-year student starter apartment.
The rent is very cheap, and while there is a bit of an increased walk time, I feel it is worth it. Everything is included in rent, but the electricity billing is a bit stingy, so be sure to limit your consumption to avoid an overage bill. All in all, a very good apartment complex.
The apartment is great. The staff are helpful and very nice. Not as expensive as the other apartments nearby.
I love this place, Have been living here for more than a year! I appreciate their great services, location, Maintenance and Staff. I always recommend this place to my friends! Prices are affordable, I got a discount this year for renewing my lease!!
They overcharge you, will never take action of you bring up an issue, and dont care about the people who live there. People smoke pot all the time and stink up the buildings. The student workers at the front desk cant help you with anything and refuse to get someone else who may actually be able to do something. Work orders take months to be completed, and thats only if you remind them 4 times that they havent completed it. Can hardly get a hold of someone on the after-hours line, and once you do, they dont do anything. Im not even sure that they record the reports of residents smoking weed. Long story short, they dont care about anything you have to say, and overcharge you for a cheap apartment.
If you like to make noise and partying then U Commons is the right place for you. People party and play loud music in the pool area every night. I dont mind people being noisy in the pool area before 12 am but sometimes people go to the pool area after midnight and they would party until 4 am. So if you like to sleep at night then look elsewhere.
A solid place to live. Simple but quality. Maintenance staff is awesome!
Where to start. Carpet in apartment needed to be replaced years ago. Very unsanitary. The apartment was not freshly cleaned when I moved in; dust had collected on most things and the bathroom floor was pretty gross. Also theres only an elevator in the first building and none of the other buildings, making moving in to upper floors even more of a workout and meaning your apartment is inaccessible to any handicapped visitors. The stairwells are always stinky and the carpet is gross with bits of trash. They keep the paint on the outside looking good, but havent updated the interiors since they were (poorly) built. They clean the main floor of the first building where they do tours daily, and Ive never seen anyone cleaning in my building. The heat options in the apartment are either too hot (upper 70s to 80s) or no heat (upper 50s). The heat is not well circulated in the apartment, especially in the bedrooms. The top bunk is a constant ten degrees warmer than the bottom bunk, because the vent is near the ceiling. The windows are insanely drafty. My desk is in front of the window and I dont use it in the winter because when I do, I constantly feel drafts. They wait at least 24 hours after it finishes snowing to clear the snow, leaving plenty of time for it to get packed down and slippery thanks to lots of foot traffic. They have plowed/shoveled the outside around 11/11:30 several nights; nice to hear when Im trying to go to bed.Close to the highway (car pollution) and hospital, so it is common to hear ambulance sirens several times a day at any hour. Not even that close to campus; there are several closer places. Ten minute walk to the stadium village bus stop.I live on the third floor, and if people are having a conversation outside on ground level, I can hear it as if I was standing next to them. Especially pleasant when a bunch of drunks decide to have a conversation from 2 AM to 4 AM just underneath your window.Incovenient that the eletricity overages dont automatically get added to the next months bill. Ive heard of some people getting insane electricity overcharges ($32 a person in a 4 person for a month) but ours have ranged from a few cents to $14. Ive heard a lot of accounts about poor interactions with management, including when my roommate was given the wrong bedroom key at move in and didnt find out until she couldnt get into our bedroom upon arriving back after winter break. Her mom had to call in for them to be motivated to fix the situation they were 100% responsible for in time for my roommate to sleep in her bed.I saw a mouse in our kitchen four times in three days, running between under the stove to the pantry, where the crack under the door is plenty large. Mouse poop in the silverware drawer. Management set up traps the year prior, which caught nothing. I set up different traps, caught nothing. Smart mice.No organics recycling (like most places but still). They dont close the garbage and recycling bins when it snows, so they get filled with snow. The indoor bike garage is nice. The free printing is nice, but you have to provide your own paper. This is not everything.Edit: It is not my responsibility to make this place better, so I will not be contributing my valuable time to call management and express the same complaints. Im moving out in three months, why would I care?
Its a fairly good place to live. Gym facilities and utilities provided are top class
They’re gonna penny pinch you like I’ve never seen before awful place to live
They offer amenities, but use the least convenient ones around, charge too much for what they do, and give little to no notice when they need to come into your apartment for anything. I thank them for doing what they do, but i would NOT live here again. Spend your money somewhere else
Prices are affordable, considering that Im near campus and have my own room. Yeah, it may not be cheap, but any cheaper and youre looking at getting a rundown house in Como. Last year, I lived in a new Dinkytown apartment, and I like that its much quieter here and I dont have to worry about being woken up at 2 am every day from all the people walking home from the Dinkytown bars. My friend and I went through their roommate matching and we got placed with two really great roommates who Id consider to be good friends now. It was nice that my friend and I werent forced to find our own roommates.
Its all right place to live even if youre not a student close to everything downtown in St Paul Minnesota lots of buses and trains
Very affordable single rooms, gym on site, and relatively close to the UMN campus. It is about a 20 minute walk to Coffman. I recommend living here.
Horrible!!! i lived in the university commons for 3 months, and I decided to move out. There are so many reasons but you can read them below from other comments. Right now, I am writing this review for the only ONE Bookkeeper who took his/her Thanksgiving holiday on 11/23/2016 through 11/28/2016. Because this place has only ONE bookkeeper, and who is on vacation I couldnt move into my new apartment until 11/28/16!!! Thanks for letting me have the worst thanksgiving!!! Horrible, irresponsible!!!Staffs are good!!!
The place looks good, but theyre in it for money. They refused to work with me as a person, but instead acted immaturely, rudely, and dismissively. Overcharged by MILES, treated the college students like inept children, then turned around and acted like inept children themselves.Rude management, desk attendants, etc.I really cannot think of a positive thing to say. The place was pretty, but for what I was paying it had best be.Countless small hidden fees, communication issues, incompetent management that seemed like they had never held a job. They didnt help me solve my problems but instead wrote me off countless times. Insensitive, incompetent vogons.
This place is a great place to live if you are in college at the U. It’s within walking distance of both campus and the green line ( for lazy people like me who don’t like to walk the whole way). The management is super responsive about any questions you have or repairs that you need. Unfortunately the giant hot tub isn’t open all seasons, but it’s a fantastic amenity to have in summer spring and fall! It’s also really great having the ability to have a private bedroom at a competetive price in the area.Another thing that I love about this place is that the utilities are included in the rent. On a tight college student budget it’s nice knowing exactly what you will be paying that month.A few catches to know about the place is that they have a weird rent payment system . If you bring a checkbook or set up automatic direct payment it’s totally fine, but don’t make month by month payments online. They go through a third party payment website that’ll charge you an extra $20 a month to pay your rent. They are also very strict about parking, so if your guest doesn’t leave by the time the office closes without a parking pass they WILL get towed. (Happened to my roommmates mom). Other than that I have nothing but good things to say about my experience here :)
TERRIBLE. Absolutely terrible. Staff dont give a s*** to tenants concerns. Price for parking may be reasonable in this area but overall expensive. Space is limited at night and rules are not enforced at all. While majority of people who live here are students, people from (poor public housing) across the street park here and walk inside our common area and computer labs, play pool games and video games.I signed the lease (4B2B) in a rush, not knowing much about U of M and other living options in this area. They appeared not knowing their own property too well and had not idea how many leases had been signed. The room was okay but not very clean. Kitchen is small. Tub is the worst Ive ever seen: low point in the center of tub so there are always water in it.Amenities: Spa pool is closed all the time, except for late summer and the beginning of fall, which is the time new people move in. Fitness room is okay. Majority of management esp. upper management are not helpful. Response to service request is SLOW. Theres only one repairman on this property, gotta be busy huhh. And they are slow at plowing in winter.NOT SAFE! All of our roommates have been victims of crimes on this property. Two break-ins to our unit, and one more to the unit right next to us the next week. I understand this is the ground floor but seriously?! When asked the front desk showed their dismissive attitude: We cant do anything about it. Thats it?! Why the heck dont you install more if theres one, surveillance cameras and even security bars on windows?!
Wow. I visited my friend out of state and I parked my car three hours. Its school vacation and there are more empty spots than not. But they towed away my car. Just wow. How cruel. I get that only residents can park but they could have cut me some slack when they had plenty of parking left and its 5am
Overall, not too awful. Small living room, small kitchen. You will never find someone to sublease this place. Its anyones last resort. Somewhat expensive. Any financial transaction is a challenge as they only accept checks or a large fee for using a credit card. For example, I couldnt end my lease and PAY THE REMAINING BALANCE UPFRONT. They drew out my lease so I have to pay for the people living there and cant send in payments directly as Im traveling for the summer. I only have $6 overage for electricity so I either need to mail a check or pay a $20 fee. BTW: expect electricity to cost $6-$20 per person a month. We were frugal with our usage and never fell below $6. I dont recommend living here. Its far from the life of dinkytown, como, and campus.
WORST SERVICE I EVER HAD. What they care is only money. Staffs are VERY disrespectful. I higly do not recommend living this apartment. You must regret to have contract with them. Im willing to pay more money not to live here. Staffs didnt want to interact with me.
CAVEAT LESSEE: Let the tenant beware. That should be this places slogan. As I read the other reviews from other tenants, I unfortunately must agree. This place needs a serious overhaul in management and practices. They seem to operate on the premise that students dont know any better and the result is a disorganized, indifferent staff that cannot seem to resolve simple issues. I came here from out-of-state for the summer and unfortunately it is the cheapest option in the area. I was told there would be parking available and while it appears there are PLENTY of spots available because it is summer, I (1) havent received any notification of an available spot (although Im purportedly on some kind of unicorn waiting list) and (2), when I did park in a spot overnight, I woke up to a giant green tow sticker on my windshield. I was in the wrong, sure. I can take the blame for that instance. However, the point is that due to their sheer incompetence and disorganization, I am having to move my car around to find another spot so I wont get towed, even though there appears to be a plethora of spots available. I am willing to pay the $80 or whatever it is for peace of mind, but at this point, dealing with the office staff doesnt seem worth my valuable time. I keep being told there are no spots. Ok...When I called customer service to attempt to resolve this, I was actually told, Youre lucky...some landlords wont even give their tenants warnings! What an unprofessional and grossly misinformed thing to say. While the parking problem in and of itself is not a huge issue, it points to larger issues of mismanagement and predatory practices. If you are a parent thinking about leasing here, please review the lease very, very thoroughly and think twice about allowing your student to live here. Since I am only here for the summer, I can tough it out, but I cant imagine that this place would be a great place to live for a year-or-more long lease, even if it is college living.I must echo the sentiments of other reviewers as well: if you are a student in a high-demand program (i.e., MBA, med school, or law school) do not live here.
Love living here! The staff is great and very helpful!
The location is good, ten minutes walk to the green line station. I released my apartment because of the location. The front desk staffs are friendly. There are a lot of activities for residents throughout the year. The rent is reasonable and if you re-lease within a certain period of time, you get to keep the same rate (but be very sure to take your time to review the lease very very carefully and make sure that the rate is what the leasing manager has promised). Because of the reasonable rent, this place gets very popular and we nearly lost the chance to release(we waited for only one week untill the spots are availale again, same thing happen to my other friend). Only one of the buildings has an elevator. Therefore, if you get a fourth floor apartment and you want the elevator access, you will need to double check with the office to see if your building has one. When my housemate and I first moved in, the apartmemt was not cleaned. We were staying in a different place for a year before moving in to UC and paid similar amount of rent but the cleanliness was so much better than UC. I am not sure if they have too many buildings to maintain but I have seldom seen staff cleaning or vaccuming the corridor or stairway. Like what people have commentted before, poor building maintenance. We are generally happy with this place but the cleanliness could be better taken care of.
I enjoy living here. It is very “homey”.
This rating is based off of my experience of living in a 4 bedroom apartment for 2 years with my friends, just as an fyi.Not 4 stars because it has downsides (5 stars is reserved for a perfect place for me, so I wont ever give a 5 star rating unless it reeeeeeally deserves it)If you are looking for a place that is affordable and comfortable place to live in then this is the place, if you want luxury then its not. Maintenance is extremely fast (day of or day after for every work order I have submitted), and the management is nice. It is great to note that management also cares about your feedback, they have a survey every year, and after living here for a year I was able to give some solid feedback and requests for things they should do differently, and they took my advice. The rent is cheap, but that is because it isnt in the best location (next to a highway and a little sketchy at night) and it is a little old. Everything inside works extremely well though (water pressure, stove top, and any appliances work better than other apartments I stayed in) and if it doesnt and you tell them about it, they will fix it in the same day.Pros:Cheap, lots of room (TONS of pantry and cupboard space), plenty of parking (and some free parking nearby if you know where to look), great windows for sunlight and a breeze to come through, maintenance is very fast, management is nice, comes with a TV, balconyCons:A bit of a hike from campus, sketchy to walk alone to/from at night, washer and dryer are in the living/dining room but behind a set of doors which adds some noise when you try and do stuff there, lighting in living room isnt bright enough at night (for me, but I like it super bright) so you need to get a $10 lamp at IKEA or someplace to put in the corner, the table in the dining room has really weird legs that stick out and it takes up an unnecessary amount of space and is easy to stub your toe on.I really enjoyed living here, and if I werent moving for my job I would definitely consider still living here after college
Absolutely awful. Staff couldnt be less interested in your concerns and will always find a way to charge you more money. The drive is never plowed, just left to turn into ice making it difficult to walk to class without slipping and falling. The front desk people are extremely dismissive -someone broke into our apartment and stole some valuables and a roommate of mine was mugged in their parking lot- all they have to say is what do you want us to do about it? Just rude all around.
Things that transpired during my hellish stay at University Commons:-Washing machine flooded the apartment and sound like an airplane taking off-Power went out in half of the apartment, including the oven, and the breaker needed to be replaced-Multiple people were injured on icy parking lotLove yourself and live ANYWHERE else.
Its 5 am right now. I was woken up about 45 minutes earlier by a tow truck immediately outside my window. There is construction due to start a few yards away in about 2 hours. Ive been to the office to let them know that I occasionally like to sleep in my apartment and that they need to start towing at a reasonable hour, but most of the workers are a combination of lazy, irritable, and ignorant. So here we are, months later, and I am still struggling to get a good nights rest. If you are a student who needs sleep to perform academically, I suggest you find somewhere else to live. Oh, and this is in addition to what other reviewers have noted about hidden outrageous fees, incredibly slow and incapable maintenance, smoking in the building, and just general indifferent incompetence on the part of the management. If you need to save money and are considering living here to do that, just eat more ramen.
DO NOT CHOOSE THEM !!!! Too far from transit station and too close to highways. Noisy and uncomfortable room!! Their internet speed is so slow. Even worse, it gets disconnected at rainy days EVERY TIME !!! Plus, they charge unreasonably. I doubt the carpet would be as clean as new after one-year usage but still they charge me $310 to replace it after cleaning it myself. Again, DO NOT TRUST THEM! WORST APARTMENT EVER !!!!
Sadly most comments are accurate, get woken up by music on the 3rd floor twice a week
I lived at UC for two years and had mostly good experiences here. Its not the greatest complex in the area, but for the price and the proximity to Stadium Village, it really cannot be beat. The rooms all have mirrored closets, which helps them to feel bigger. The bathrooms arent great, specifically the showers have a lot of standing water (I lived in two units over my time there and had this issue in both). Also, the smoke detectors are almost overly-sensitive -- this is probably a good thing but even blowing out a candle would set off the alarm for a few minutes... so fair warning there but really not a big deal. Its also really nice to have W/D in unit, as well as to have the separate sinks (in my 4b2b private room layout) in the bathrooms. The gym is basic, but pretty nice. It gets crowded, but if youre creative with times, you shouldnt have an issue. There is a study room that could use some more space, but the computers are nice and its decently quiet (when people arent screaming playing foosball lol). The pool area isnt great, usually people are really loud and its closed most of the year, but the occasional study session in the sun can be nice. Overall, 7/10 for public amenities. HOWEVER, just a small thing -- the stairwells are always DISGUSTING. People drag their trash, so there is always things on the ground (i.e. rotting food/liquids), its never really cleaned in there, and people smoke a lot in the stairwells, which means that it always smells like a bad combo of a garbage can, weed, and cigs. Again, not really a make/break, but it is pretty gross and I lived on the 4th floor so I had to deal with alllll of it.The front desk staff are usually really friendly, and Ive never had any issues with safety -- they do send out prompt emails if anything does happen, and also if there are things that tenants need to know about (surface plowing, etc). Sometimes it takes a while for maintenance to get around to fixing things, but everything (from a broken closet door to a light bulb replacement) has gotten done. They kind of suck at responding to emails (when registering my ESA), so going to the office is the best bet to get anything taken care of.Roommate matching was nice, so we didnt have to seek out people to live with, but Im not really sure how they did it, because my best friend and I (who requested each other) got placed with two people who REALLY did not vibe well with our lifestyles. This is totally not their fault, theyre both nice people, but it is hard to rely on roommate matching to place you with people you would live well with, and get people who are very much not like that. Something to be aware of -- did not ruin my year, but made some things (i.e. trying to get my roommate to take out the trash more than once in 9 months) pretty awkward/uncomfortable at times.Biggest complaint is the cost of parking and the parking lot -- I was unable, for months, to get a parking permit, even when there are easily 15+ spots that are unclaimed ALL THE TIME & having put myself on the waiting list. Also pretty sure that people who work at the hospital park in the lot, which kind of sucks -- this has not been verified though. And people park in the 30 minute parking for DAYS, so when I had a petsitter, she had to park forever away just to feed my ESA. Probably more of towing company issue, but annoying that UC did not enforce that any better. Still, for the low cost and location, all the negatives really get overruled by positives.
Very bad apartment. Why I think it is bad? I parked my car in the wrong space and they immediately towed my car without any notice!!! Charge me 215$ without any refund! They are happy not me. Without any time to inform me that I park the wrong place. I pay for 215$ for the tow. I try to argue with them that they should at least give me some notice. They said thats my fault. I park the wrong place, but the apartment at least should give me some notice before towing my car! I feel they just want to charge me more money. When you choose the apartment, I suggest you avoid this apartment because they dont care about their residents. I am afraid next time someone park the wrong space, consider to pay extra 215$.A lot of apartments nearby, Wahu, Stadium Village and so on, I will not live here again. I just want you to know the irresponsible policy here. Avoid!
The buildings and rooms are really nice, but they will take any chance they have to make your life that much harder.
Terrible place... very bad communication, and they always seem to find very random reasons to add fees on top of the already overpriced apartments. Ill be happy when my lease is up
Hands down WORST apartment ever. First week we moved in the internet didnt work for 2 weeks. The prices they charge you to live here are awful for what they offer. All those amenities they claim to have never work, but yet my husband and I who are both students still pay close to $1400 a month for a tiny, one bedroom. The hot tub is broken more often than it works. The grills only work half the time. We werent allowed in the grill area for 2 weeks, now its been another 2 weeks they still dont have the new grills in, but they did put one of the old grills in and it doesnt have propane. So its the middle of June and I cant even enjoy grilling. I absolutely CANNOT wait to move in August, and NO ONE should live here.
This is a fairly affordable apartment best suited for students. For the price, its ok. The downsides are primarily its distance and management company. Personal story at the end, if youre interested.1. The walk is about 25 min. from the apartment to the Mall area on campus. During the winter, this walk feels like an eternity. Dress very warm, as you will have a 30 min walk to campus and back daily.2. The management is acceptable under normal circumstances, but they are fairly incompetent and uncooperative when problems arise. This is probably due to the high turnover rate for their managers, but still does not excuse their poor performance.tl;dr Recieve outrageous bill upon moving out. Called management 7 times, got no answer and never received a call back. Management is nearly impossible to work with and tries to harass tenants into paying their fees.My roommate and I left our apartment in a mostly clean, but not pristine state upon moving out. Several weeks later, we all received a bill for $150 each, amounting to $600 total for all of us. For reference, this is the equivalent of 2 men paid at $15/hr working for 20 hours to clean our ~800 sq. ft. apartment, which is impossibly high. I refused to pay the bill and demanded to speak with management about the charges, but I was walled out every time I called. Every time, they claimed they had just hired a new manager, but he/she was out sick and I was asked to leave a message. I called a total of 7 times, all the same answer. I am doubtful there were 7 different managers, but they were incredibly difficult to work with and contact.
Terrible. The staff helps with as little as possible. Everything is always broken, pool sticks, tvs, smoke detectors, i havent seen the hot tub working since i moved in almost a year ago. The walls are thin, beds are uncomfortable, and their roommate matching is a joke. My friends apartment here got robbed by his roommates friends, my other friends roommate got evicted for trying to kill his girlfriend in their apartment. Its not that safe, its not that cheap, and its not that nice.
For starters - the internet offered in the rent is advertised to be high speed but actually only gets about .1 MB/s. Because of my work and school projects I have had to get internet from a third party, adding another bill. Next there are no elevators in 3 of the buildings, making them inaccessible for handicapped friends/family. I have also filled out 3 service requests for the same issue and havent herd back on any of them in over a month. Additionally, appliances work off and on. My packages have been mis-marked and lost once aswell. The CAs are unfriendly and often appear to me uninterested in issues or questions residents have. Late move-out fees are charged ($75) with 3 days notice by slipping something under a door and no email or other attempt at communication made.Overall, it isnt worth the price paid in comparison to some of the other apartments near campus, I get the impression they are going for money, not customer satisfaction.
If there were a no star rating Id use that. This place just rips kids off. My son and his roommate were charged $50 for a single piece of paper and $60 charge for cleaning the kitchen and it was cleaner than when we moved him in. Parents keep your kids away from this place
First of all I didnt get the room that I signed the lease for. Second of all they wouldnt let me off the lease because they couldnt give me the room that I signed for. I ended up paying for it but I barely stayed there. At the end of my lease they charged me for a stain in my room.
TERRIBLE PLACE TO LIVE. When we moved in there was mold in the bathrooms, the first floor gets robbed all the time, staff was not helpful. Dont live here.
Just dont do it. They roomed me with someone who had legitimate mental problems and was three times my age. They refused to do anything when he screamed all night or banged on walls.
Decent place to live for the price.
My car got tolled on the first night I moved in when Im still wondering if I should get a parking pass or not. There was no warning or notes and just tolling. The office knows nothing about it and let me to call the tolling company to confirm the situation myself. Really wish there is 0 star.
Every month they charge about$ 20 more for electric fee and cant offer a detail. Stuff are horrible, would give 0 if there is
Awful. Nightmarish staff and experience living here. Do yourself a favor and avoid this apartment.
Never ever choose them! THEY STEAL YOUR MONEY!
Its cheap- rent is cheap, furniture is cheap. Its in a great location, but if you have a room near the stairs it will be super loud
Worst apt ever after
It was ok
Dont live here, I will ignore you if I lose your shipment!I had several shipments with their English names, and then they refused to accept them, and they did not know where they were. I updated my English name in the email a few months ago and also left the address of the apartment. In the end, they just talked about something, Residents of more than ten years ago may have the same name, I need to confirm by email twice to count to shirk responsibility.
