I love this gym! Theres a good variety of equipment and classes available, everyone is friendly, and its both been a great place for me to get back into fitness after time away and a place to sharpen my skills.
BEST PLACE TO GET BACK OR BEGIN WORKING OUT!!! EVERYONE YOU MEET THERE IS CONSIDERATE & HELPFUL FROM TRAINERS TO OTHER MEMBERS. PLACE IS VERY CLEAN & EQUIPMENT IS IN TOP SHAPE. MEG
This is my sanctuary and communal space as a new Middleton resident after coming from the isthmus. 4 pools one of which is outdoors, three hot tubs were the big selling points for me. I go here multiple times a week and love it.
Nice staff and good facilities. Like others’ comments, the lift training equipment is old and outdated. And sometimes people did not keep the weight plates orderly and organized after training. Despite the shortcomings, the atmosphere is very good. I enjoy my work out at harbor.
Weve enjoyed Harbor for my daughters swim lessons, but what stands out is how the helped today when we left swimming lessons to find our car with a flat tire (as well as a hungry and worn out toddler). I was working on getting the spare when Robin came out to ask if I needed help. Pretty much before I could even answer, he was bringing out a portable air compressor to get the tire topped off to make it down the road to the service station. It was a huge help to us!
Not disabled friendly. Even after renovations
I have recently had a couple of monthly memberships at HAC. From the very start, the people working there have been remarkably friendly. I had a great tour of the facilities with Brittany my first time there, and she has known my name to say hi ever since. I now have a medical issue (surgery) that will interfere with much of my second month of membership, and they are willing to make an accommodation for me. I am really impressed by HAC!
There classes are great! Trainers Rock! They truly care about their members! They are always innovating and even more now with Covid-19... they are making the club as accessible as possible during these ever changing times!! Their ability to pivot and get classes online and get a tent for the new outdoor classes is impressive! The only bad thing is I wish I had more time to use it to its fullest! Because they truly have SO MUCH to offer!
The place is dark, with very few windows, it makes me feel like I’m in a cave. There is equipment all over the place in a disorganized fashion (like on the running track, on the basketball court). It’s almost like they had ordered equipment without actually thinking about what would fit in the building. Everything is old, and the building shows its age.I came to get a trial membership, just to test the place out for a few days, get a feel for it, and the guy that I spoke with literally rolled his eyes at me when I told him what I wanted. He made it seem like a chore to go into the other room and grab 2 day passes for me. The 2 big gyms in Madison (Gold’s, Princeton) both happily gave me trial passes, one for a week and one for 2 weeks.Tl;dr - Old building, cluttered, unprofessional staff, I won’t be back
Harbor Athletic club is pretty great. Multiple pools, excellent weight room, multiple cardio rooms, courts, everything. Also group classes early in am and later pm. Also is kept very clean- huge improvement over other popular athletic clubs with smelly locker rooms- Harbor is definitely superior.
Outdated facilities with some “facelift” and horrible customer service/attitude.
Ive been a member of Harbor Athletic Club for about 8 or 9 years now, and I absolutely love this place! First, the atmosphere is great. The staff are friendly, and there are people of all ages, shapes, and sizes working out. This is not a place where people mainly come to show off, but one where I feel welcome and happy to work out. Second, they are very family friendly. There are people of all ages there, lots of families, and things to do for all age groups. Third, they have 4 pools! 1 outdoor pool open in the summer, and 3 indoor pools -- a lap pool, a warm water pool (great for therapy and occasionally used for classes), and a sport pool (great if you just want to float around and also occasionally used for classes). Each of the indoor pools also has a hot tub nearby. I often like to unwind, relax, and float in the pool after a long workout. Most other athletic clubs only have a lap pool where that is not possible. Also, the hot tub (in the winter) and the pool (in the summer) is what often gets me motivated to go the club in the first place. (Just imagine sitting in a hot tub on a cold winter day watching the snow fall outside; or cooling off in a pool on a hot summer day!) Then once Im there, I work out as well. This is one of the nicest athletic clubs / gyms I have ever belonged to!
This club is clean, friendly, and is wonderfully staffed! The customer service here is the best I have experienced at an athletic club or gym. Additionally, the amount of amenities, group fitness classes, and workout machinery surpasses any other facility in the area. Great club, highly recommend!!
1st indoor (masked) workout since mid March....spinning rocked! It was amazing! Safe! I will be back tomorrow, Yahoo!!!
Excellent facility with lots of superb instructors! Handling Covid-19 perfectly!
It was an excellent visit. The staff were kind, friendly and helpful; they have everything you might need to work out; they have a steam room and a sauna which is awesome; free coffee. The only downside was construction, but they are only under construction to make their business even better. Thanks!
No complaints except for the weight lifting area and machines being ancient...it gets old having your dumbbells get loose and start unscrewing themselves on you as youre using them.
Was hyped to get back in after the shutdown. Only real change was pathways to walk down, carry around a spray bottle and towel is no big deal. Wife will be happy when the other two pools open back up.
I had dropped my wallet in the parking lot on the way into Harbor athletic club. An amazing member had written my name down and called my insurance company to get my phone number to return the wallet. He also turned it into the front desk. He told me the exact amount of money that I had in my wallet and said it was all in there waiting for me. Honestly I didn’t expect to see the wallet or the money ever again. I considered it gone. But to hear that somebody had turned it in with all my money in it truly made me happy. I went to pick it up today and my wallet was there but all of the money was missing. Moral of the story is do not lose your wallet.Update: The money was returned. To the young man, We all make mistakes and the way you took ownership is something you should be proud of. Owning up to mistakes is extremely hard and it takes courage. The action was a very wrong but the way he handled it was correct. Remember, what you do in life now will define your future. So don’t be an idiot.
Love Harbor! Spend most of my time in the wellness center and have to say all the instructors are great and very helpful. Really nice group of people. Just bought my husband some personal training with James and he is very excited to go. I am sure he will love it as much as I do! Thanks Harbor!
Great place/folks.
Harbor is such a great place for both families and individuals to get their fitness on! I love all the class options and times through out the day- very convenient. I also love that they offer kids classes too. All of the instructors are so friendly and knowledgeable.I really like the different pools that they have as well, there are many family swims and then adult only swims options to choose from.My experiences have been nothing but positive and exciting at Harbor!
I really appreciate Harbor Athletics effort to be a good community member. From the time I signed up to now, Ive never felt hassled or misled (unlike some other gyms). They are always sponsoring local events and able to offer direct discounts and immediate solutions since they are locally run. The facilities may not be state of the art, but there is no reason you wouldnt be able to get in shape there and you will be treated like a valued customer as you do.
I have been with Harbor Athletic Club for a year. I am really not happy about the club. I left my jade Chinese face scraper in the sauna room. I called right after I got back home and they found it. I was told to pick it up from the front desk. I got there after two days and no one can find it. It literally disappeared from their front desk. They changed the policy for having one lap lane open with the master swim classes. I was speaking to Melissa (she told me that she is the owner of the club), she told me that all the schedule wont be changed. If the schedule does not work for me, I can go somewhere else.I was shocked to hear that. This is the worst customer experience. All I am doing at the club is swimming. I went ahead and moved myself to Princeton the same day.The place is dirty and is always in construction.
Not quite sure how you can justify needing a $10 guest pass to bring a 6 month old baby into the indoor pool if mom already has a membership, but thats exactly what the gatekeeper told us last time we were out. Do you really expect people to pay for an additional membership for an infant so mama and baby can go swimming together for an hour on a weekday afternoon? You offer free child care, but gotta pay if they are going in the pool? Seriously?? We will be exploring other options.
Currently taking a group class at Harbor, as well as done a individual personal training session. Both went and are going wonderfully! Harbor has a nice space, as well as a crazy amount of classes they offer! Looking forward to utilizing more of what they offer! They have many different spots and areas and makes if really feel like you’ve got a lot of options.
Love this place. Very friendly staff and trainers, which sets the tone for interactions with other members as well. Not the least bit intimidating for newcomers. Many options ranging from those who want to get in a light/social workout to those who want to get their butt kicked by a class or personal training. I especially enjoy the Boot Camp classes which are included with membership. My children enjoy going to Kids Club, swimming in both their indoor and outdoor pools, and this spring theyve made amazing progress in just three swimming lessons at Harbor. Facilities and equipment are well maintained, clean, and not overcrowded. I also really appreciate the culture Harbor has established: welcoming and motivating atmosphere for people of all ages and fitness levels, actively engaged in their community through philanthropy and volunteering, and responsive to their members needs. Such a great part of the Middleton/Madison community.
I have been a long time member of Harbor - since my son was young and I could take him there to swim in the evening. I swim and sometimes work out but mainly have used the Wellness Studio across the parking lot. There is a wide range of yoga and pilates classes at convenient times with excellent instructors. I much prefer Harbor to other more glitzy clubs.
I’m disappointed with my experience at Harbor Athletic Club. We pay $112/ month for a family membership (my husband, 3-year-old son, and myself). It’s pricey but we were willing to pay it because HAC touts itself on its access to 4 pools. When we signed up we were told we could have access to any of the pools except for the time period when the warm water pool had classes or lessons. Much to my surprise when we went to use the regular pool tonight we were kicked out of the pool by a swim instructor who was using one lane to teach a private lesson to ONE student. She was rude and inflexible about the situation. She didn’t even have to the common decency to walk over and talk to us. Instead she screamed at us from across the pool! No one else was using the ENTIRE rest of the pool. Another member pleaded with her to just use one area as well since they were only using one lane. She claimed to be a manager when we asked if this was a new rule. And of course no other managers were on site. I’m shocked that this is the way a manager is trained to talk to members. The remaining two pools were occupied as well so this pool would have been our only option to swim with our 3-year-old son. If they had been transparent about the pools availability I would have never signed up for a year contact at $112/month. Your money is better spent at another club. I definitely feel like just another number here after the way this manager treated my family.
Lots of awesome class option, but run down and they have TERRIBLE communication/training amongst staff members. The number of times I’ve received misinformation during my two year contract has been numerous. Each time I point this out, I am told either “we have new staff” or “we have a new system.” That is very disappointing.
Our family has really enjoyed Harbor! The facilities have everything you need and more to get a variety of workouts in. Best of all they are family friendly and have a great childcare program that my kids just love. The outdoor pool is the summer is always a big hit! We appreciate the kindness of the staff and all that Harbor offers in programs.
Love this place! Very family friendly. Lots of equipment and pools. Very clean. My only complaint is about the basketball court. Not enough access to it. It is almost always reserved in the evenings.
This is our fourth year at Harbor and could never see ourselves anywhere else. We love the many options of workout rooms, classes, pools, and the staff. It is an incredibly welcoming place to all skill levels and stages of life. Our kids also love going to not only the child care, but the classes they offer for kids, the playground, and of course swimming! Harbor is not a chain that is just moving bodies through the door. They care about you and want to know you personally.
Mixed feelings about this gym! While the equipment and facilities are old and bit crusty, they have nice pools and free onsite childcare, which makes it an excellent option for families (especially during the long Madison winters). I take my daughter here to swim almost every weekend. Still, the place some could use a good cleaning and some new equipment.
If they want to be around for another 10 years, they need to start investing in their facilities. -Employ qualified people(not friends and family) -just enough people(too many just hanging around) Majority of their employees are nice towards their known friends and family while not servicing the other 80% of the other members. They can be rude to those 80% of the memeber that they are not friends with. Just go across the street to star bucks and see how they service their customers. Need to train your employees and focus them on revenue generation.
Way to crowded, not enough room for everyone. Impossible to stay focused while getting a pump.
Harbor Athletic Club is the best gym in the Madison area. I have been to almost every gym around and I always stay with Harbor. Its not just a gym but also a community. A+ I recommend to everyone and their grandma.
We have been members for 3 years and it is the BEST family gym in town! We love everything: my zumba classes, spinning, powerflow. Also the kids club! All people is super nice and my kids love to go there to play. I also like sauna, the 4 pools and whirlpools! 100% recommended!
Friendly gym with great classes & decent equipment, generally look & locker rooms are little dated.
I love the spinning classes, womens workout room and hot tub. Plenty of clean locker room facilities. Desk staff is always friendly and helpful.
Outdated equipment, old pop music always playing in the lifting area that dulls down any lift, and take a walk around the club and youll see people sitting on couches watching tv. End the cable subscription and put that money towards new equipment. If it were not for the great location of the club, i would not be lifting here. With that said, they do have a lot of classes and family friendly workouts. But, not the best location for a serious workout.
The equipment certainly isnt the newest, and the facility looks its (old) age. But, this is a great, family-friendly gym with an excellent selection of classes and all of the equipment you could ask for. There are dedicated areas for cardio, strength training, swimming, cycling, racquetball, basketball and more. Lots of interesting classes which are mostly included with membership. The wifi is reliable, too. An expensive but worthwhile investment.
Weve been members for years and love all the options. As someone who is not a die hard fitness person the price can be hard to swallow and the fact that soooooo many things cost extra is really annoying. Again maybe if I utilized it more I could see the value but to go twice a month and have to pay extra for the classes has me screaming Rip Off!
All the equipment you could ever need and the best trainers in the greater Madison area. Membership is a great value.
My husband and I went in for a tour of the place. I was not impressed one bit. All equipment look outdated. The inside of the building is very dingy and not feeling clean about it. Nothing against kids, but I saw a lot of them in there. The staff at the front were awesome, very helpful and tried to make the place a 5 star, but its not.
Our family absolutely loves the club! They offer a wide variety of classes for the entire family, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the facility is squeaky clean. A+
If it were not for the mostly awesome class instructors and the variety of classes offered, I would not be a member of this club. it is VERY dated and dingy. the carpet is filthy and very worn, there are always dust bunnies when I run the track, the windows and mirrors have the same smears and marks in them that were there over a year ago, and it is just all around kind of a gross place. I do not step foot any where but in the group exercise. I wish the owners would take a little more pride in their club and do some updates and hire a maintenance and cleaning crew that knew how to really clean. also, the kids club is pretty sad...toys are not updated and there are barely any toys to begin with. my children cry when I say were going to harbor kids club! most of the staff is friendly, hence the 2 stars. i only joined because of the classes and would leave in a heartbeat if a diff gym were close by.
A place to workout and play, Love the pools! Now the outdoor pool is open, it must really be summer!
As a swimmer, although there are multiple pools here, it is terrible for real distance training for multiple reasons. In the lap pool, there arent designated lanes among the 4 lanes available. So everyone wants to take their own lane even if they dont swim any real distance. Secondly, having a hot tub in the pool area may seem nice, but due to the low ceiling, the chlorine concentration in the air in the smaller air volume spikes with bad air circulation sparking coughing fits among many trying swim anything more than 500 yards. I will applaud that they at least have backstroke flags, kick boards, pull buoys, and a time clock. Lastly, with regard to the equipment, its sporadically maintained and replaced and there is no organization to plates and dumbbells. Although not horrendous, for at a minimum of $60 per month for one perso with $20 guest passes, a well managed LA Fitness would blow this out of the water.
This place is bs, when I went in using my family passes (which I have done before many times with no problem) the only way it was different this time is my friend was black. She then went on to make us leave. Although its just my opinion, you should definitely be able to let you friends use your passes. Just saying KEVA is $5 for a day pass, and much nicer service.
Overall its a good place to workout. My major complaint would bethat they need to gut the mens steamroom and start from scratch. They have been continuosly fixing a broken steam room for whatseems to be the last 20 years! The fence along the back of the outdoorpool has been broken for over a year! They simply need to re-investin the club itself.
Adjust your focus If you want to be all to everyone then you cannot have families and classes in the pool and adults who want to swim it doesnt work. It would be nice if you focused more on people who come here to work out instead of a community hang out place. I am all for having kids have fun but NO ONE watches them. Kids hit you will balls so you will leave. The people at the desk say hello to everyone but dont do anything. Stop allowing so many small children in the hot tubs for LONG periods of time this is not safe! Other clubs dont have these issues and if this wasnt so close to work I would leave after being a member for 12 years it is sad to say I no longer enjoy coming here I have to think about who I have to fight for a lane. I also question the cleanliness as NO one showers before entering the pool and no one corrects them . A sign saying No dry bodies in the pool area or telling them they will be asked to leave if they dont shower
Great equipment! Always open! And childcare!
Great facility
Horrible customer service. They dont care about keeping you as a customer . Kathy (manager) was rude and unhelpful.
Great people and a nice facility
