Lily did a great job on an unusual short cut that I wanted to try. She checked with me the whole way to make sure it was what I wanted/expecting and I ended up with something awesomely punky/edgy/alternative. The whole appointment was on the longer side, but she was delightful to chat with and very thorough. Id have gone back, but I moved away :(I liked the online appointing. In the summer of 2021 they were still enforcing no unnecessary waiting in the lobby (you would check-in by phone and they could come get you) and they were still requiring masks despite the relaxed mandate. Im not sure if those restrictions have since been changed.Atmosphere was modern and warm. Not too loud (except for hairdryers) and lots of natural lighting.

I learned by mistake not to walk in but to call ahead as I got no service.I will tell you this place is absolutely beautiful and extremely different. Kinda like a Chicago flair in Madison style of a place.

I love this place!! I went for the first time last week and I wasn’t super thrilled with my haircut. I emailed the owner, Liz and scheduled another appointment with a different stylist, Charlotte. She did AMAZING! She was so nice and kept the conversation going while I was in, and it was clear she knew what she was doing with long layers. Amazing customer service from Liz and Charlotte and I will definitely be making Thorps my go to for haircuts!

I usually never review, but I am not happy with this situation. I have been here a few times with minimal complaints. Post appointment these are missed spots I found after paying a hefty amount of money for this. I get spots get missed, but this is their error and should be fixed immediately. All that needs to be done is put toner on my roots to blend it. I was told I could come in next week. You should get me in now. Make it work. I don’t care who does it. Fix the problem. This is unheard of at other salons. Very disappointed on how this is handled and I still am not getting this fixed. I emailed the stylist and the owner with images and my concerns. I still haven’t heard anything back from either. The only thing was the receptionist trying to schedule me like I was a regular appointment. I am sorry, this gets squeezed in. Make it work. Fix your errors. My hair represents your business. This is embarrassing.

A lovely local hair salon! This was my second time coming in. They always do such a nice job and aim to please customers. They take people of all ages. And offer cutting and coloring. Staff is super easy to work with. And I really like that you can even book appointments online through their website. Highly recommend this place for both men and women. They work hard here! I am really pleased with Kennas work yesterday.

I went to Thorps because I was tired of an ok but often bad $20 haircut from Barbershop for men or Cost Cutters. My barber is JR and he does a great job. I always leave a satisfied customer. JR knows his way around the clippers and is great at keeping conversation alive during the visit as well.I will note I also feel very safe when entering this business during the pandemic. The staff takes extra caution. They wear masks AND face shields. A great place for the community. I cant wait till they are fully open again and I am able to enjoy a soda or a PBR while I am waiting for my haircut.

Lily has done an amazing job with my naturally wavy hair, which has been unruly since birth. Regardless of what type of cut I get, it looks wonderful and grows out beautifully, which has always been a struggle for me. She is also very friendly and personable, as are all the staff members who have helped me. I really appreciate the atmosphere and Thorps dedication to inclusivesness. I am able to get appointments that fit my schedule and find the centralized location convenient.

I was sort of considering changing hair places, and came here on the recommendation of another fabulously-haired individual that I met. It was a very easy, comfortable experience. and the staff is friendly and welcoming. Courtney was a breeze to talk to, and did a great job on my hair. All she did was a bang trim and some ~*fancy stuff*~ with the bits right in the front by my face, and my hair looks totally different and awesome - quite frankly better than it has for some time. Its a bit of a trip for me, but I am definitely going to try to come back and get an actual haircut here. Oh, yeah, you can also schedule appointments ONLINE!!!!

Nearly 30 minutes late, fouled up my name, and I left with a shirt soaking wet a third of the way down my back. Not amused. And I just got my electronic receipt and it is for more than I authorized. Really not amused. Now they just told me that this over billing “has been happening” and that they will “just have to refund” me. When, though? Really, really not amused.

Not only is Genna one of THE raddest, kindest chicks I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting, she’s also an insanely talented stylist. She completely transformed my hair color in one sitting and for that I am oh-so grateful. Its been a long time since I’ve been this stoked about my locks. I work in a professional office setting but have always enjoyed bright, bold colors. I’ve really struggled the past few years to find a perfect balance but Genna nailed it the very first go around. Im very particular about my haircuts and Ive shopped around a fair bit since moving to Madison a couple of years ago. I now regularly see JR who gives great cuts and is able to make adjustments through suggestions too. Definitely worth stopping in, although you will have to book a couple of weeks in advance to be certain of getting a time you want!

Ive been going to Thorps for almost two years now! Sadie always does an amazing job on my hair! The salon has a really cool atmosphere, and the receptionist is always incredibly helpful! I love it so much that my husband decided to try it out, and now he gets his haircuts here too! The stylists do tend to book pretty far in advance so be aware of that when you call or look online. I highly recommend that you schedule your next appointment before you even leave the salon.

I’ve been there before and enjoyed my experience. I had an appointment today that I made two weeks ago and I was called as I was pulling in to let me know that my stylist doesn’t trim beards even though I was able to book them online. Please update your system so this doesn’t happen to someone else. It also would’ve been nice if there was another stylist there that could’ve swooped in and done a trim.

I originally came in to have Lucas fix my hair following a small accident. This is the best haircut Ive gotten in Madison. I learned some new things about my hair and ways to emphasize some of the natural features. I appreciated that Lucas worked with my existing haircare items and gave me tips that fit with what I own and how I normally do my hair. The staff overall are fantastic and Ill definitely be going back!

Michael was pragmatic with what he could fix, made some great suggestions and pulled off a haircut I am excited to have. He worked with the impossible and pulled a rabbit out of the hat I was hiding my hair under. I am sold and have found my local home for a quality cut!

I usually like going to this place for the skills all the stylist have, although today I was extremely disappointed with their customer service as I wasted an hour before the front desk lady remembered she forgot to check me in after I was willing to wait for her to get off phone when I first came in and she said I just need a name and got back on it. The online booking was not working right so I waited for nothing. I completely understand the glitch with the system I would of left no problem but if she would of checked me in we would of found out sooner and the way came across seemed pretty careless.

Jorge is the man. I’ve been looking for years for a good barber. I found Jorge about 2 years ago, and have been going to him ever since. I get a pompadour usually and he does excellent work at a good price.

Cool hip atmosphere perfect for the neighborhood. And on top of that Alyssa does a great job on my hair and beard. To prove this point I have gotten over a dozen short haircuts from her and I have never had to go back to get it fixed. I also love having a beer while getting a trim.

I went in for a haircut after some glowing reviews from my friends and was not disappointed! Quinley did a beautiful job and I am definitely going back. I loved the place so much I had them do my hair for my wedding . Sadie created a hairstyle that matched the day and my personality and did not budge until I took the pins out, despite a lot of dancing and humidity (without making my hair nasty with hairspray). HIGHLY recommend them! Great staff, great service, great space.

I have lived in Madison for almost four years and tried several hair salons and found each of them lacking for various reasons. Then I found Thorp Salon and Tara. Tara cut, colored, styled, and transformed my hair. She is the best! Not only a great stylist but a lovely person. The Salon is warm and friendly. It is so great to have found my forever Salon and Stylist in Madison.

Had an appointment booked online and had to give my credit card information to hold the spot. A week later they call and tell me they double booked. Have been going to Thorps off and on (attending school in a different city) for the past few years, but the quality has been lacking recently. Will no longer be giving them my business.

Although my colorist is good the place is very unorganized and thinks it is cooler than it is, which explains the high prices and lack of a receptionist. I have called multiple times throughout the day and only get the answering machine. (It was explained to me that receptionists are difficult to keep.) I also paid partially in advance to make an appointment and then discovered later that they forgot to subtract the prepay amount from what I had paid after my hair was done. Now its just a matter of trying to get a hold of them to rectify the situation. Ive been there when the water was shut off and the credit card machine wasnt working as well. Maybe its cool for hipsters to call with their credit card information the following day?

Great atmosphere and service. Dinah was awesome. Great suggestions and the relaxed atmosphere really was nice for someone who really doesnt know exactly what they want. They even offer you refreshments. Its a bit pricy but its absolutely worth it! Definitely would recommend this place.

As new residents of Madison (six weeks), I immersed myself in salon web sites in search of a stylist. (My wife and I had been seeing the same stylist in Los Angeles for 18 years).Intuitively I was guided to Jen at Thorps believing she possessed the insight and ability that would result in something beautiful.Prior to meeting Jen, I provided her via e-mail with 3 photos of my wifes most recent haircut.On the day of the appointment Jen studied the 3 photos again and the result was amazing in every way. (At this point my wifes hair was 9 weeks since the previous cut; THREE weeks longer than usual).The haircut is great! Jen is expert and adept.Thank you Jen! You are creative AND skillful; the perfect combo to implement a vision.Jens haircut was a wonderful welcome gift to our adopted home town.

I love Thorps. My partner and I have gotten numerous cuts there and they have all been fantastic. I got my hair and make-up done at Thorps for my wedding (by Cera and she was amazing) and all my bridesmaids as well, of which I had 11 which I know is ridiculous. Everyone looked fantastic and really enjoyed the salon. Their music is great, as are the vibe and the decor. Capital beer is also a plus. Ive referred a few friends who love it as well.

Hands down the best haircut Ive ever gotten. I walked in off the street, so I didnt really know what I was getting into :DThis is one of those fancy hair salons. Appointments required sort of thing. I randomly got lucky, someone canceled their appointment before I walked in.Id never been to a hair cut place like this, so two things stood out. Compared to a standard guys haircut, it is eyewateringly expensive. Also compared to a standard guys haircut, you walk out looking super sharp! Personally, its up to you whether looking extra sharp for a week or two is worth $50. For me, honestly, its not, but it was a neat one-off experienceMolly did a fabulous job cutting my hair! If you wanted a fashionable, trendy haircut, Id get it here.

Went to get a Mens Haircut. Ive been growing my hair out long so that at my next hair appointment they would have material to work with. The hairdresser, Leah, after telling her I wanted short sides and to keep the top long -- essentially an undercut, whipped out a buzzer, and completely shaved the sides and back of my head without giving a second though about the shape of my head or the fact that I said I didnt want to be able to see my scalp. She did absolutely 0 fading and gave a completely amateur haircut. Not to mention, I showed up and the woman at the front desk barely even greeted me and seemed eager to get back to her phone. Do not recommend AT ALL for a Mens haircut.

Went to Thorpes for the first time yesterday. Really cool place, and my haircut looks great. Hair stylist really took her time, made some great suggestions and really listened to what I wanted, and was very skilled. Never felt better, price was really reasonable after trying a few different places in town. Will definitely be coming back.

Thorps has a cool vibe and nice people, but they really do a good job with haircuts, which is why I go. I have had countless bad haircuts elsewhere and none here. They allow you to do reservations online and have some nice products available for sale as well.

Let me start by saying that Ive had five haircuts in the past four months (each to correct a mistake made during the last cut), at cheap chain shops, in an attempt to save money. By the time I decided to make an appointment at a high-end salon, I had already spent twice the amount of money I spent on a haircut at Thorps earlier this week.First, I love the ease of scheduling an appointment online. You can read about the stylists & their specialties on the website, & the scheduling system actually matches you to the stylist(s) that will best suit your needs.Second, the ambiance of the salon is cool. The vibe is somehow vintage & modern at the same time, with a hipster flair. This definitely isnt your run-of-the-mill hair place. They offer PBR. The chairs are probably the most comfortable salon chairs Ive ever sat in, big & cushiony.Third, Jesc was a complete pleasure to work with. She took the time to listen to what I wanted, made good recommendations, & explained to me what techniques would best suit my look & lifestyle, & why. I had been on a medication for years that left the top layer of my hair brittle, coarse, & prone to breakage. Before coming to Thorps, I worried about the price of the cut because I was skeptical that anything could be done for my hair. I had seriously considered buzzing my head & getting a professional hairpiece because I was so embarrassed by the state of my hair. Im so glad I kept the appointment. I cannot reiterate that enough. Jesc cut my hair into a fun, attractive bob, styled it, & I left with sleek, smooth, shiny hair, the first time Id had that in YEARS. I actually feel like *I* got away with highway robbery; $60 is ABSOLUTELY worth it to feel as good about my hair as I did after my appointment with Jesc. Shampoo, cut, & style? Totally worth it.I also want to give a little shout-out to Davines oi oil. I was a little worried I wasnt going to be able to emulate Jescs styling at home, but I put the oi oil in my hair today, & almost ZERO FRIZZ. I am completely sold. For the first time in years, I feel really good about my hair.Overall, I couldnt be happier with my experience at Thorps, & Ill definitely return as long as Jesc is there.

I booked my appointment online and I was not disappointed. The head receptionist greeted me right away -I know that sounds silly but just imagine walking into a party with people you dont know and a familiar face comes to greet you with a warm smile, thats what it was. My stylist was Taylor, she is a long-hair expert and she is AH-MAZING(I got my bangs fixed, a trim and some colour). Taylor spent good time on me and we had a fluid conversation throughout, which is pretty amazing on her behalf. Multi-tasking is a dying art. So skilled is she with those shears, a little snip goes a long way and Im really satisfied with this look.

Dont go here. They will mess up your hair color. Take 4 hours to do it. Charge you $146 for a cut and color. Then when you ask to get it corrected tell you they are too busy with other clients.Tell you they will refund you, then tell you that was a mistake....a typo. Then refund you for only part of the cost and then actually refund you-by returning the tips you gave to the stylists instead of the service fees! Shady place for clients to go and stylists to work.

I love going to Thorps! I am relatively new to Wisconsin and went through the agonizing task of trying to find a good stylist. I looked at reviews and then checked out websites. I drive an hour (yep, might be crazy but its worth it) to get to the salon. There is a comfortable quirky feel to the place and the clientele fit that mold (from hipsters and students to middle aged professionals...). I have had Kenna and Quinley cut and style my hair. They are both wonderful - intelligent, friendly, professional, chatty, :-) I truly believe you get what you pay for and at Thorps you receive top-notch service from talented staff.

Do not go to this salon! They are incredibly rude and inhospitable! I was told by a stylist that she would be willing to fit me in and I made an appointment. I called in advance to tell them I was going to be 10-15 minutes late to which they responded thats fine. I arrive and am told that they can no longer see me that day.They do not care at all about their clients and conduct their business in the most unprofessional way! I am disgusted especially since I was getting my hair cut and colored prior to my birthday.

It’s hard to get in there. It’s expensive. Their service is worse than it should be for the price. The haircuts are only decent.

I have been considering writing this review for almost a week now and I figured since my experience at Thorps is still bothering me, its time to write. I am always looking for constructive reviews on google so hopefully this will help as a learning experience and also to any future clients visiting your salon for the first time. I had been searching for a salon to go to in Madison for months. I also get nervous to get my hair cut and end up never getting the courage to actually do it. When I found Thorps and read through the reviews and went through your website I felt like maybe this would be an amazing experience for me, because thats exactly what I was looking for. The reason being that 2018 had been an incredibly traumatizing year for me, I lost my sister and my grandmother and had completely let myself go in terms of self care and hair care. When 2019 hit I was ready to find myself again, I needed a fresh start, and for me going to a salon and re vamping this long, dead, dull hair of mine was the perfect way to get myself out of this rut. When I called to make my appointment, the receptionist was super friendly, I told her that my hair was very long and I needed it to be completely revamped because I couldnt stand it anymore, she said ok great I am going to put you with this certain stylist (first problem) and we set my appointment. In the week to come I was getting more and more excited for this experience I was ready to go to Thorps and leave there feeling like a new person. I was getting more and more confidence as my appointment got closer to decided that I was going to go for a super cute short hair cut and I was so excited. When I got to the salon I was ready, ready for this change, ready to feel like a new woman and get out of this whole I had fell down. When I first met my stylist she was super nice, we talked for a few minutes and I told her a similar story that I told the receptionist, that my hair was just dead and weighed down and I just needed something completely new. After she washed my hair we sat back in the chair to talk about what I wanted, I showed her the picture and said I really wanted to just chop it all off, she paused and stated that those styles really werent her specialty and if I wanted a haircut like that I would have to reschedule with someone else. I was a little shocked at that, I wasnt sure why she was only able to do one style of haircut? My hair was already wet and washed so I decided to at least have her get rid of some dead ends so that my appointment wasnt a total waste. She did a nice job, gave me a nice normal haircut. I think she could tell when she was done that I was just ready to leave. I was so disappointed. I walked out of your salon in tears, for me this day was supposed to mean something, I was supposed to walk out feeling beautiful and amazing, instead I left feeling like I had the same heavy, weighed down hair that was just a little trimmed up. It was so upsetting. I am not sure why you have stylists that are limited to one style of haircut? This is something that you should make your client very aware of, especially because when I called all I said was that I had long hair and I wanted something completely revamped, I never said I wanted a long haircut. Does this mean that your clients are not allowed to change their mind about their desired haircut before their appointment if they are booked with a certain stylist or else they will have to reschedule with someone else? If this is how you operate and have certain stylists for certain haircuts you should make this very clear to your clients. Im not sure why you would want to limit your clients to like that. Are your stylists not required to take continuing education so that they can become more versatile and able to provide a wide array of services to your clients, to include multiple styles of haircuts? I did end up scheduling 2 other appointments with the correct short hair stylist to come back and get the haircut and color I wanted, which after some thought I will be cancelling.

Really great salon. I fell out of love with my previous salon where cut & color was almost $200 and I was no longer loving the results. Not only is Thorps down to earth but the quality of service is fantastic. I see Hattie and I simply love her - shes skilled, knowledgeable, and I truly enjoy coming to see her. It doesnt hurt that a color is a mere $80 and a cut just $25. I love my hair again thanks to Thorps. One of the few places in Madison to get your hair cut if you have ethnic (not Caucasian) hair. Great atmosphere and people, and you get free coke/coffee/PBR while youre having your hair done!

$38 for a mens barber haircut before tip.Ive been going there for 4 years biweekly and they raised it from 25 to 38. The staff is great and the atmosphere is pleasant, but that doesnt justify their blatant cash grabbery! Never going back again.
