The best part about my stay at this Airbnb was leaving. Initially, I was concerned that there was only one review, and I wished I had followed my instinct and not booked the home, Taj-kumal Villa. Dealing with Myrna, the host, was disappointing and disgusting. My guests and I were appalled by her unacceptable antics, poor hospitality and deplorable attitude. I was looking forward to having a wonderful birthday trip while staying at this Airbnb and it did not turn out that way. I requested to bring in my own chef, however, she declined. She recommended “chefs” she felt comfortable having in her home so I took her up on her offer and sent a $250 deposit for three meals. The deal was to have the chef prepare the food in front of me and my guests, however the chef did not come, he sent his wife instead. In addition, dinner was prepared at her home and not in our presence as requested. His wife and crew arrived late and therefore, dinner was not served at the agreed upon time. I expressed my disappointment to Myrna and she stated, “these people are poor and Mayan and have very little money” and I should be understanding. I found it disgusting and in poor taste how she could objectify these people in an obvious attempt to make me feel bad. Sounding irritated and dismissive, Myrna then mentions that I need to take whatever issues I have up with the chef, who happens to speak very little English. Albeit, the people who brought our food were pleasant, however, we did not enjoy the food at all. I expressed my disappointment with the food and informed her I would not be using them any further. I also stated I would not be paying anything more aside from the $250 deposit I had already paid. She emphatically agreed and stated that she didn’t expect me to. She also proceeded to give me the definition of a chef vs a cook and said my lackluster experience was due to the fact that I did not select a “chef,” although during our email exchanges she referred to the individual who was to prepare our food as a CHEF! She offered me a bottle of prosecco for my troubles and apologized for my experience. Once I took the time to calculate the cost of service/food for the meal, I requested a partial refund. She told me I still owed money for the chef and continuously requested that I make sure I tip them because they are poor. This was a HORRIBLE and UNACCEPTABLE response from a host especially since she agreed that I owed nothing further!As for the Airbnb, it can best be described as a Monet painting: attractive from a distance, but unattractive upon closer inspection. Sheets and bedding were stained, there was no hot water our first night, and the property is need of a power washing, especially around the pool area. The refrigerator did not cool well at all. We had to keep our food cold by placing it in the freezer (which cooled more like a refrigerator than a freezer).Also, one of my guests was locked out of her room one evening. She had the key but, it did not work. She contacted Myrna who told her she would not be able to come out that night but would come in the morning. She never came by the next morning to help, nor inquired about how my guest was able to get into her room. It was obvious Myrna did not care.Lastly, as we are leaving, her gardener hands me his phone telling me Myrna is on the other line and wants to speak with me. She is fully aware of the time we are leaving and decides to call me at that time to still request payment and ask me about tipping her staff. I explained to her I was unable to speak as our airport transportation had arrived. This was such a low and unscrupulous antic.I finally decided to work directly with Caribbean Fantasy, Inc. I expressed my disappointment with Myrna and other issues with the home, and they asked what they could do for me. I requested a partial refund and they refused.This a horrible experience with horrible service, and a waste of time spent going back and forth with the host considering I was to be enjoying my birthday trip with friends.

My family has been using Caribbean Fantasy for over 20 years, and they have been a pleasure to work with.Their knowledge of the area, is extensive, and they are always up to date on anything happening in the Yucatan.We hope to go back to Akumal again this spring, and we will definitely be using Caribbean Fantasy to help with our travel plans.

They were a huge help on my last trip, went out of their way to be sure we had all the local information and our trip was stress free. Highly recommend them for a worry free vacation!
