It is a beautiful and challenging designed course. Unfortunately the condition was lacking when my foursome played. The $60 fee isnt justified based on the course condition. If it was well maintained they could easily charge $80 - $100 per round. The pro apparently doesnt read posted reviews because I recently heard him say the Big Run was in great shape while he was at another course in the area. You have to acknowledge aproblem before you can correct it. I hope the course survives and doesnt fall victim to housing development.

A little TLC on the sand traps would make it almost perfect. A ranger who pushed slow play and teach golf etiquette 101 would have made it perfect. Greens we perfect with the exception of ball Marks player dont repair.

Big Run needs Big Maintenance. Fairways are dry, patchy, and full of weeds. Very disappointing since the course layout is great. Its a shame to be in the condition it is in since it could be nice if it were maintained.

My 1st time at big run, found it to be a very challenging in great shape golf course. Despite the rain the nite before and early morning there were no soaking wet spots or puddles of water on the fairways. Was great to use carts on the fairways at 90 degree angles, being a senior citizen it make it easier for me with my bad knees. Greens were difficult but very playable. Sand traps were wet and not filled with water. Like all golf courses now days, too many players do not repair or replace their divots or ball marks on the greens. Unfortunately no sandmix is provided on the carts. Enjoyed my game here and would definitely return again.

Nice course with some really tough holes. Problem is pace of play. From other reviews 5.5 hour rounds seem to be the norm. We never saw anyone on the course helping players keep a pace of play. Saw a lot of people just drinking and sometimes playing and a lot of older gentlemen who need to be moved up a few tee boxes.

Many trees need to be trimmed or completely removed. Slow play was also an issue extending time on the course from 4.5-5hrs. Love the bar & food. Will not likely return.

The course condition is the worst I have played on, clover filled fairways, and dead dandoline sticks still rapid in the fairways. Never returning, too bad, great hilly and tree lined, but no grass, and grass clippings on the greens, bring a broom.

Let me qualify this by saying this is a great golf course. But for $70 on a weekend you would think that the conditions would be better. The fairways and greens were great, but when you get in the rough, the weeds and dandelions were so bad it was difficult to find your ball. After all, who shoots from the fairway all the time?FYI - I played on 5/2/21

Course is decent. However I will not be bringing my business back there.5.5 hour round on a Wednesday 1p tee time. When I let the Pro Shop know of the long round when we got done, the gentleman simply stated its a long course so its common. No apology or statement that theyre trying to speed up rounds there. The time before I was there the ranger was having a bad day. Wasnt exactly nice or professional. If he talked like he did to me to someone else whos having a bad day, there may be more than just words exchanged. The guy needs to go fly kites for a living cause he dont belong dealing with customers. If you want to give your hard earned moola to a business that appreciates customers, go somewhere else. If you want to play a round in 4.5 hours or less go somewhere else.

The course wasnt awful for 18 holes at $50 including cart. However, I was disappointed at service just to acknowledge my tee time. The guys at the desk seemed agitated just because I was checking in. It was also pretty annoying there was literally no place to warm up. During the round, the course was in ok condition. The rough and fairway was pretty good. The greens were very slow and the sand traps had very little sand. Tee boxes were spotty.

Couse pretty wide open. Good for the novice. Hilly. Golfed in early April which made condition of course tough to judge. Cost was $60 for 18/w cart which I thought was a lot for that time of year.

Fun course, but this review is based off paying $70 for Ranger Rick to hurry us (6600 yards, 4some, 4 hours and 20 minutes) and watch us play what seemed like every hole. The course is in poor condition, sparse and mud traps. Better courses in the area for the money!

Review №26

Im confused about people saying the course is in great shape. The greens are nice but the rest of the course is an absolute pit. Huge rocks in bunkers, no sand, fairways are non existent, same grass length as rough with most fairways being a majority of weeds. Dead trees all around you. Yardage markers are missing or unreadable. Holes dont even have 150/100 yard markers. The side handle of our cart was cracked in half so you would cut your pants or scratch your leg constantly. Such a beautiful piece of property but unfortunately this course is gone.

Yesterday our foursome played Bigrun. Haven’t played there in years and had high hopes. But unfortunately it turned out to be a less than favorable experience. The course most closely resembled a goat pasture as my friend had described while we were playing. But what’s worse was that the two Marshals feel a need to give you a hard time. Everything is dryer than dry yet won’t let you get to an arrant ball on a par 3. And had to listen to a 5 minute dissertation on how he doesn’t know who we are but wants us on the cart path and doesn’t want to have to throw us out. And the flow of play was pretty good forward and behind yet one marshal had the nerve to give a warning to keep it moving. Even though we were putting out on a par 4 and the group behind wasn’t even teeing off. For $72 a person, lots of better options out there. We will not be back.

Used to be a great trackConditions need improvement. Layout is one of the best in the Chicago area but fairways overgrown with weeds and trees blocking approaches makes me think they need new ownership or a better grounds crew...or both! Bring your A Game with you when you play Big Run. Youll use every club in your bag just to make par. It humbles good players and demands accuracy. Numbers 9, 15 and 18, all par fives, particularly require both distance and accuracy plus a degree of strategy. Lots of golfing fun here. Challenging greens. Winding creeks. Towering trees.Shoot par here and then give me a shout. I want to learn from you.

I gave this Golf Course a three-star the last time I played it and this time I dropped it to a two star rating! The personality of the people working in the Pro Shop and the bar waitress really needs to smile and appreciate customers when they walk through the door. They dont greet you very well and it seemed like they just woke up on the wrong side of the bed every time Ive been there! The maintenance in this place really needs to shape up the rough is as thick as always and when making a tee time they never tell you theyre aerating the fairways, greens, or tee boxes which most if not all golfers usually need to know. If it wasnt for friends that play here whom I truly respect and want me to play with them I would never ever play here and recommend this course to anyone at this point in time!

Golf was great! The course is well kept, challenging, and fun all around. Pro shop staff was excellent. Jaree, Alex, and a female worker I did not get her name were awesome. Very personable, nice and fast. The bar and restaurant however were not so great. I come from the restaurant and bar industry and we close at our time either on the dot or stay open when customers are there. The kitchen closed 15 or so minutes before close (8pm). The bar called last call at the same time! I play twilight usually and expected to have a drink and some food. They were closed. Only reason I am leaving this place a 3 stars.

Played 8/11/2018. Wow this course is challenging!! Definitely the most picturesque in Chicagoland!! It lives up to its name! It’s huge and very hilly! Love the terrain. Unfortunately the play is slow. 5.5 hours is almost a given. They should really space the tee times out to 15 instead of every 9. We were backed up on every tee! Makes it more difficult when your pace is way off. Over all I love it. Next time I’ll try a weekday

Right from the first tee, you realize what youre getting yourself into. This is one of the most challenging courses Ive played in a LONG TIME, so add at least 12 strokes to your handicap. But this is a VERY WELL MAINTAINED course, with the most intimidating par 3s youll ever want to see. So when you get here, BRING YOUR A GAME, and play SMART! And if you go to a golf course to enjoy the clubhouse, this isnt the course for you, as this clubhouse is very dated. But if you want to have FUN, and be CHALLENGED with your golfing experience, well now youve found your PLACE!

One of the toughest tracks in the area....great layout....tons of elevation changes....some tight and open holes....138 slope from the whites outta tell u something....last trip greens were a little fuzzy and slower than normal but I think the weather has something to do about that....showing its age a bit but a must play, this Sam Snead codesign!!!

CHALLENGING - have to bring some game to play. The course is very well maintained. Lots of big mature trees and smooth greens. Something you dont see a lot of places is the Rangers doing something always. Rather moving golfers along or filling divots to keep the place looking great. This is one of the hardest courses in the area with 2 par 5s over 600 yards from the white tees and a 210 yard par 3 to an island green. So if you are looking for a challenge this would be the course for you. Be prepared to add 6 to 10 strokes to your normal score, If you manage to survive the front nine the back nine will surely punish you Ive played with scratch golfers that struggle to break 80 from the white tees but a very nice course at a decent price. Also the golf carts are new as of last year and each one has a laser yardage finder with comes in handy often.

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! I booked Big Run using golfnow and was able to find an unbelievable deal of $4/person (yes, $4) including carts for this Sunday. An hour later I received an email from the golf pro Bill stating that he wont honor the price, and instead will let us play for $45/person. I told him I understood there was a mistake, however there needs to be some convenience/leeway considering golfnow and myself didnt make the mistake, instead Bill from Big Run made the mistake. Bill gave me HIS BEST OFFER of $39, which is a $2 discount of a hot deal at Big Run. I told Bill $30 is more than acceptable/reasonable but Bill never budged, ultimately putting disadvantaged college kids in the hole and ruining their Sunday plans because incompetent Bill cannot honor and man up for his mistake.

Ive played this course three times, and in terms of a challenge and playability it is terrific - one of the best in Chicagoland. However, the pace of play is atrocious, especially on the back nine. Ive never completed the back nine under 2.5 hours, and todays round took a total of 5.5 hours. 3.5 hours in, and only on the 12th hole, I called the pro shop to inform them that three groups were stacked up on one tee. They said I should try to understand because these people are trying to enjoy the weekend. I dont understand.
