TL;DR: You get what you pay for.I want to like these guys, I just can’t. A few bad experiences and I’ll go elsewhere.I brought my bike in for servicing and they swapped out the bottom bracket for a new one since mine was worn out. Worked great for about a month, then the bearings started grinding in the new one. Still functions, but doesn’t ride like it should for a months wear.Separate instance. I bought new tires for my bike there and talked to the guy about getting some durable tires. I didn’t even get 200 miles into my new tires before the back tire ripped a hole caused by a manufacturer defect in the tire. Another shop looked at them and thought they looked used. Who knows, but broke my trust. It’s just lots of little stuff too. The caps on a handle bar wrapping job weren’t put in right so they fell out or the tire was installed on a bike backwards. Just weird little things I haven’t seen other places. These guys are cheap, their parts and labor will likely be less than other shops, but you’ll be there a lot more often too.
I stopped in to get a nut that we lost when we removed the front tire. The person handed it to me and I asked how much? He said, dont worry about it. I went back to put it on the bike and the whole quick release came apart. Guess where I took the tire to be fixed? They are super busy because kids are being dropped off for school, but everyone was working hard. They were very helpful to everyone who came into the shop. I would recommend this place in a heartbeat!
Great customer service! We were looking for a bike for our college age son to have a solid mode of transportation around West Lafayette. They were very easy to work with, and they have a huge selection of quality used bikes that they have refurbished. They really took time to make all the needed adjustments to make his bike like new! Highly, highly recommend!
Took my four year old bike in for a check-up. Had a significant list of items to check and - if necessary - repair. Mechanic offered to do a full breakdown of the bike, lubing bearings, replacing spokes, truing wheels, servicing and adjusting brakes and derailleurs, and anything else they could find. For less than what I paid for my car-top carrier and two tires, I received my bike back - in better operating condition than it was new. Im exceptionally impressed with Virtuous Cycles and their team (especially John, who gave my baby the overhaul it deserved). Thanks, VC!
Staff and owner are very friendly. I did not encounter any hidden fees. They told me the exact amount of repair cost it is going to take for my repair breaking it down for me. Inconclusion its a good store.
Great service, they were very handy and answered all of my questions well.
Just wanted to shout out this shop. I lost my bike recently and stopped in here on a whim thinking they wouldnt have anything like my Surly Ogre but they had a shiny new Kona Sutra and Im so thrilled to have it! I feel blessed. Great service and chill people.
Terrible bike shop!! Dropped off my bike for service and was quoted 4-6 weeks. Showed up 5 weeks later to check on it and no one even touched it! Absolute worst poorly run place and experience I have ever had!! Go somewhere else for your cycling needs!Below is the customer service response that you get. Excuse after excuse is all I heard but never an apology. Bye bye from a local bike enthusiast.
This place has a little bit of everything. Great place to shop.
Always impressed with this local family owned bike store and bike repair shop. They have quantity, quality, and it comes with straightforward kind service. Knowledgeable, with good bike values makes for a comfortable purchase every time. Thank you!
This is just a great shop with nice people. Great customer service. The best place to buy a bicycle from in town or have your bicycle serviced.
Great service, friendly staff, almost no wait time
We had 3 bicycles that needed service. 1 needed a total service down to the frame. And 2, needed tune-ups and maintenance. The quality of service provided, with such attention to detail, by the mechanic John Cherry, was beyond what we expected! And is the best service we have had with any bike shop period. Our bicycles ride better now then when they were brand new! And one bike is over 25 years old!
These people are fair and helpful . Best prices on work they do.great selection of parts, first rate operation.
They use the products they sell, and are passionate about bicycles
Ive been here a few times and Ive been pretty happy with the results. They do a pretty good job and the people who run the shop are great people. They really know theyre stuff. I was happy with the work they did on my bike. I upgraded some things and had some other stuff repaired and they got my bike looking and feeling better than it was before.
This is my go to bike store fore.. since they opened maybe ten years ago. And I should review it every time its good to me, which is every time Im there, but I dont.Today a staff member named Garrett was exceptionally helpful and I want to say THANKS AGAIN VIRTUOUS for being so awesome.
This is my favorite store for everything cycling. Their service is great, the people are knowledgable, and it has that carefully cultivated hometown bicycle feel to it. They have new and used bicycles and free workshop nights that are helpful if you want to learn more about caring for your bike or how to upgrade it to make it exactly what you want. There is great bicycle parking right out front too!
Bikes are hard to come by in the Detroit area so we decided to try a local shop in Lafayette Indiana where my son attends Purdue. We had a terrific experience purchasing Kona bikes for both my wife and son. The staff was beyond knowledgeable and friendly and made sure we left totally satisfied. I would highly recommend Virtuous Cycles for your biking needs. 👍😎
Top notch little bicycle shop with excellent service. I brought a bike that I thought I was going to need the whole wheel replaced or at least the free wheel, but the guy found the problem and took it apart, cleaned and greased it good and it rode like a charm. They saved me a lot of money too! 100% recommend them.
Very nice and plight done a great job on my bicycle at a reasonable price .taking my other bike there
Fantastic place to get your bike serviced. They did a great job on an old mou tain bike of mine with quick service. Rides like new.
Amazing Experience!! I was in the market for a nice commuter bicycle. Zoe (the owner) has an awesome selection of used bikes to choose from. I found the perfect bike at a great price. Zoe and the whole staff went out of there way to help me set it up perfectly for commuting. Highly recommend this bike shop!!
Bike had a flat (first bike since being a kid), learned I should check tire pressure every week to avoid a pinch flat. Took 10 minutes to fix. Knowledgeable staff, highly recommend this shop.
Excellent family-owned, local bike shop that goes above and beyond in the customer service department. Always fair with pricing and will work closely with you to meet your biking needs.
Good prices, very friendly and knowledgeable. They fixed my badly maintained bike to better than new condition! Definitely will be back
Virtuous cylces has been very helpful to me. I have been there a variety of times, and they are always very helpful and explain everything thoroughly. I have had 2 different bikes worked on, and every time they are quick (except for major modifications, they have done it while I was in the store), and I have had a bike appraised by them. They gave a very reasonable evaluation. One heads up, they do have a small charge to cover the cost of using credit cards, so it is a little cheaper if you BRING CASH.
Very rude. Do not recommend. We had to wait outside due to COVID which is fine except the one lady that was bringing out bikes was completely not interested in actually bringing out bikes. I patiently waited while she was just talking to her friends. Finally she asked me what I was looking for and I informed her. She took a while bring out a bike that was nothing like what I said I was looking for and before I could say anything she walked off talking to her friends again. I realized I’d be here all day at this rate and she was making no effort in engaging a customer or making a sell. I’ll buy my bike at Hudson’s.
Very good customer service, dropped my bike off for a replacement wheel (the perils of living on a college campus) and they had it swapped in two hours!Definitely recommend supporting this local bike shop
This family-owned store is very customer friendly. They support our local community in many ways.We were able to take in a bike have a new tire put on and several adjustments made while we waited - it only took a few minutes. The staff had the bike up and running at a very reasonable price.Earlier this summer we took our daughters bike in that needed the works including a new seat, rims, breaks, and ..... . The staff did a great job! They turned a beaten up bike into a bike that our daughter rides trails on. Thanks so much to everyone there for making this worried Mama much, much more comfortable!
Great local bike shop. Very friendly and helpful. They are a little more expensive than some places but they have good high quality products. Their labor rates are very fair.
Had my shifter serviced. Quick, easy, and extremely fair prices.
Family owned and operated with the highest ethics, community minded, entire family is actual bike riding advocates. They have tons of experience in bike commuting, bike culture and lifestyle. They stand behind their sales, and are a huge asset to the community! Totally trust their advice and products and have purchased several bikes, helmets, shoes, parts, bags, etc. Also excellent fair trade in values given.
Always the best items in stock, incredible customer service, and happy smiling faces. Best quality, authentic value. It’s my go-to bike shop!
I had Zoe and his crew custom build a bike for me. I live in Indianapolis and it was well worth the trip up to Lafayette to work with him and it was an overall great experience. Will definitely return and recommend this shop to my friends.
I bought my first road bike from Virtuous Cycles. They do all my maintenance and have help provide recycled bikes for kids! I always recommend this place!
Super friendly, & professional. They adjusted new bike for me even though I didnt buy it from them. Awesome service.
Nice and friendly LBS that offers fast service at a reasonable price! Highly recommended!
For years, Ive been going to Virtuous for everything from window shopping to advice to repairs and new bike purchases. Theyve always tried to help me out to best meet my needs rather than just make a sell. And theyre very patient with all the times I come in even just to window shop wistfully!
Love this local and family-owned bike shop. Virtuous Cycles does great tune ups, has an excellent selection of bicycles and accessories, and has some of the best people working there!
Been going to Virtuous for years. Trust these guys with all of our bikes - and for recommendations on super special kickstands to hold up our 100lb tagalong situation! Love this shop!
Extremely friendly and helpful people. I got a used road bike and they went all out with getting it ready for my needs, and customizing it a bit, all included in the price. I really like the feel of the place too. Definitely recommend if planning to buy a used bicycle. They also offer to let you use their tools to repair stuff on your own free of charge on Sundays from 4 - 6, which is super cool.
Very helpful and friendly people working there. I bought a bike that wasnt quite what I was looking for and they were more than helpful in finding me a better fit. Will buy my next bike there for sure!
I am always so impressed every time I go in there. Thank you again! Also as others have said they remember you even if you dont come in very often.
Ordered a piece over the phone from Virtuous Cycles, they were super helpful and speedy, received the piece just as described and very quickly! Great experience. Thanks folks!
What a great local shop!! As a new, very beginner biking enthusiast (with 1000 questions to help decide which bike I should invest in) I was very grateful for the patience and expertise of the guys/gal in this shop!!! They spent hours trying help me find the right bike. I havent taken delivery because I am awaiting some special order parts to go on my bike. But just for the pure buying experience I give them 5 plus stars!!
I had an issue with an order through them and they went out of their way despite some computer problems to resolve my issue. They also do great work and have shown to be a local company willing to go the extra mile for customers
Ive yet to come to this shop and find friendly help. I came to town today, looking to pick up a new cycle for a new riders birthday, braved covid and construction to come to the shop and try, and was not quite politely told to wait outside. If I wanted to wait, I could go somewhere else. Come here and find the owner doesnt want to really sell to a new customer, just fix existing ones. Hard to want do business with a shop like that. Turning away new business is a hard way to grow. I like doing business with local people, but I feel this one is worth scratching off my list of places to spend money. I wouldnt stop in if youre looking for anything but service.
Virtuous Cycles goes above and beyond in matching our cycling needs. We love this place and the people!
Got a New tire and tube for my bike I always go to virtuous cycles for any bike repair
Came in for a general tune up. Bike rides better than it ever did
Fixed my needs on my bike fairy quick..nice still have small town business.
They go the extra mile to find the right product for you.
A great shop with wonderful owners and staff. Over the years, they’ve helped me with everything from picking out a basic helmet to hand building a custom set of Onyx/Velocity wheels and ordering limited edition Paul components to match my bike. Incredibly knowledgeable, super nice, and locally owned.
Great place with amazing people so happy we have such an awesome bike shop in Lafayette.
VERY RUDE I ASKED AN EMPLOYEE TO BRING OUT A BIKE DUE TO THE COVID 19 RULES AND THEY DIDNT EVEN BRING IT OUT!!!! I WAS HUMILLIATED AND HARRASSED THAT DAY! IM NEVER GOING BACK TO THAT STORE!!! #RUDE #BOO
Great shop where all the workers have a lot of knowledge! The owners are super nice and remember their customers months later. Its really nice to be able to go in with questions and get them answered so I can keep taking good care of my bike.
As a guy who rides his bike eight miles, round trip, every day, including winter, Virtuous Cycles is my one stop shop.Zoe is the man. Virtuous is everything you need and want in a local bicycle shop. Do you want a new bike to get around town? They have plenty of those. Need gear to bundle up for the cold winter commutes? They have you covered. Is your bike not riding like it use to? All the staff are knowledgeable and will give you a fair price for repairs. What sets Virtuous apart is their used bike collection. Unlike Craigs List bikes, Virtuous sells bikes at a fair price and will make sure the bike is tuned up (brake pads, break cables, shifting, chain integrity, oil all the parts, safe tires, etc.) before you leave. Nobody has time for a crappy bike that squeaks, creeks, falls apart, or worse, puts your life in jeopardy.
Everyone that works here is friendly and they really know what they are doing. Great selection of bikes and add ons.
Great bike shop. These guys really take the time to figure out the best option, either for a new bike or repairing your old bike. Awesome to have such a great bike shop in town.
I went to Virtuous Cycles today on a recommendation. What a great place!!! They not only sell new & used bikes but service them as well. You can also purchase just about any accessory, equipment or apparel you might need. The guys at Virtuous Cycles really know their stuff and are very easy to talk to. No pushy sales people at Virtuous Cycles either. They are honest and open to all your questions, which is huge plus in my book. I will absolutely be back! You should stop in and check out this hidden gem in downtown Lafayette for all your cycling needs. Thanks again for your help.
I pinched flatted my tubeless tire while I was riding near the shop. The tire was compromised and they didnt have my tire in stock. Rather than try to sell me a tire they had, the owner let me borrow his personal bike so that I can ride home and grab a spare I had at home!! That is just first rate stuff right there. When I got back, they checked my rim and spokes to make sure they were structurally sound and set me up tubeless with the new tire in about 20 minutes. Awesome service and bailed me out of a tough situation.
Incredible bike shop! Very happy to have found it. I usually go to BGI in Indy and get great advice, but here one of the employees, Justin, actually walked me through pulling off the rear wheel and disassembling the cassette to check and redo the rear bearings. Super helpful, very friendly, and happy to share their knowledge with the community. Will strongly recommend people to come here and will continue to come here myself while Im here in Lafayette.
My problem was simple. I assembled the bicycle myself, and being a first-timer, I did not tighten the screws very well. In a month or so, the brakes became very loose, and I did not know how to fix them. I searched for bike repair shops near me, and found this place with excellent reviews. The bar is set very high, I thought. I took it to Virtuous cycles. I was greeted by a person and I explained my problem to him. He took a look at the bike, and told me it would take x dollars to repair. I waited for 20 minutes, he repaired everything, tightened the handle bar, checked the air pressure and gave it back with exemplary care. In the middle of all the money-minded auto repair shops, such nice people to take care of bikes seem to exist!!! If you have any bike issues, this is the place to go to. To them: keep up the good work!Pros: Nice people, honest upfront approach (in terms of payment), value for money, walk-ins accepted for minor repairs (I presume).Cons: Lack of waiting area for customers, which is partially compensated by the large collection of new and used bikes on display.My response to the recent 2 star comment on this place : It is a bike shop; not a shopping mall!!! It is supposed to look that way;
Very helpful and not afraid to take the time to explain and answer questions. Gave me lots of options, offered to order items I needed. Very reasonable prices. Locally owned and that is another good reason to support them. They have something for everyone, any age, any walk of life.
All you could want in a local bike shop. Huge attic of low cost rebuilds. Good range of new bikes including road bikes and kids biles
Very friendly and helpful owners with a great selection of bikes!
My wife and I went to Virtuous Cycles looking for a road bike for her birthday. They were incredibly helpful and friendly, answered a ton of questions for us, sized her for a bike, and helped us find her dream bike for a very reasonable price. They have a great used bike selection with a wide variety of models and prices, and it was perfect for us.Most importantly, the shopping experience was great. The owners and staff are friendly, knowledgeable people who love bikes. They were never condescending, even when we asked super basic questions, and really practice the community building they preach on their website. Would recommend anyone in town looking for a bike shop here first.
Very saddened with the service we received today. We referred to the store by Wabash Riders Club. We wanted to get a used bike. The young man took us upstairs and basically said have a look around, hope you find something. He showed us a couple of really low end pieces of junk, really didnt even ask what we were looking to purchase. Went to Hodsons after and were treated like a person, not someone taking up their precious time and energy.
The people here are the best! This is hands down the best bike shop I have ever been too! This is a shop that you will want to come back go for years. They are knowledgeable, kind and very fair. I cannot recamend this place hourly enough! 6 out of 5 ⭐s!
Great place! The owner and employees are awesome. Great attitude, helpful, honest. Attention to details too, plus, seriously awesome bicycles. I saw some biking shoes in there that I covet. ;-) Seems to have everything in stock. Easy to find free parking too, which is good since I had to take in my bike. Oh, and prices were very good. Cheap as online sources except without the waiting and hassle of delivery.
These people are on the fast track to becoming the go to LBS in Lafayette. I had only gone to the shop across the river before and never had a good experience. They were extremely helpful and approachable, not condescending at all. I will recommend this shop to everyone.
Great service. Friendly staff.
The guys at Virtuous are miracle workers...my bike fell off the back of my camper at 65 mph, and was destined for the dumpster. I took it in to Virtuous, and within 3 hrs, the bike was returned in very good condition and in some ways better than before the mishap, and for less than $50. Grateful for the guys at VC who saved me a bunch of money and always provide outstanding service!!
Traveled all the way from Indy for a Kona for my son, only to be rudely told to wait outside and another customer taken before us. I get it that COVID has changed how business must be done, but I was never even welcomed by the staff or even asked what I was shopping for. Overall a bad experience for me personally.
Have to come from out of town 40miles, these Guys get me in as soon as i show up, analyze the problem, suggest a solution and get the it fixed right! Knowledgable mechanics!Very reasonable charges! Recommended!!
Virtuous Cycles is easily the best bicycle shop I have ever been to. Their prices are extremely competitive (even compared to online), the quality of their service is phenomenal, and they really want to make sure that you love your bike. I went here dozens of times during my four years at Purdue, and I never once left the shop disappointed. The owner is super friendly, and all of the mechanics know their stuff. They wont try to sell you a bike or upgrade that you dont need and really cater to people who use their bike for purposes other than racing. If you are looking for great service at a great price, Virtuous Cycles cant be beat.
I really appreciated the kindness and patience Paul had for me when I took in my new shoes. Im very new to bikes and he took the time to show me how to adjust my shoes, and also fit me to a couple different styles of bikes. Being a newbie, I would highly suggest speaking to their knowledgable staff! Thanks again!
TL;DR Dont come here for repairs if you dont know much about repairing a bike. They will prey on your inexperience and charge you multiple times for labor. (Info below)I walked in with a flat tire, and they told me what caused the flat, and how to prevent it in the future, which was great. I asked if they could change it for me, which they did. After that, they asked me if there was anything else they could do for me. I then told them my back brakes werent working well, and was wondering if I needed new pads. They said no, its just that theyre loose, and asked me if I wanted them to tighten them for me. I said sure. This took him a few seconds to tighten the know, and after that, they asked if I wanted them to tighten the front ones while they were at it, I said sure again, not knowing that each and every action they were doing was an extra $8.50 charge. I figured there would be a labor charge for the whole operation, but never did they tell me that they reapplied it for each and every small action they performed. The brake tightening took no less than 10 seconds for both the back and front tires, and they charged me twice for labor, totalling $17.00 for turning two knobs. I felt that the $8.50 charge for changing the back tube was fair, but the $17.00 for tightening the brakes felt wrong. When I got to the register, I was so happy that my bike was fixed I even tipped him for how nice he was. This was before I knew how much he upcharged me for his exhausting feats of labor... I feel like I was scammed.
I was a walkin on a very busy weekend. Im fairly handy but I dont do changing windshield wipers nor adjusting bike brakes. I was sent right to the back of the store to get taken care of and educated. They corrected the front and back brakes in a jiffy. They wanted to charge me for just one adjustment (the backs were not bad) but unlike some other reviewers, I feel this is a small business and should certainly be fairly compensated for EVERYTHING they do All I ask is that they be courteous and fair. I have no complaints with either and I insisted I pay for BOTH adjustments. We were just camping in the area and appreciated the great service. If I lived local, they would be my go-to bike shop for purchases and service. One other thing, I asked for a tool kit to purchase so that I could do-it-myself. I was not recommended the most expensive kit but rather the one that would serve me best. Nuff said! 👍👍 Thank you.
This is hands down the best bike shop in Lafayette/West Lafayette. The workers are amazingly friendly and great to talk with! Theyre happy to talk through bike voicec options and arent the kind to make you feel bad about whatever bike you have.
I love that Virtuous Bikes is family owned. Zoe, Des and every single person working there care about helping their customers and doing what is right. Im a novice cyclist. They took plenty of time to find a bike that fit me and was in my price range. Great place!
Waited in line outside and visible with my whole family for 20 minutes just for the guy to go to a customer that had just walked up. Done before I even started. Ill be buying my two bikes from somewhere else.
Was having trouble with a tire that kept going flat. Couldnt figure out what was going on. Went in and John found a piece of glass in the tread that I couldnt find. Took the time to explain how it happens and how to look for this issue in the future. I left a new tube and a valuable bike lesson! There is no better bike shop in Lafayette. They really make you feel welcome and answer all your bike questions. Theyre all expert bike mechanics. Highly recommend them for a your bike related concerns! Thanks Virtous Cycles for being so great!
Great assistance in working through options on a bike purchase. I very much appreciated the laid back atmosphere as they patiently helped me with a choice that I appreciate more each time I ride. Good selection of clothes and other gear as well. All this in a nicely re-purposed old building downtown just off Main Street.
These guys are awesome. Always willing to help fill your tires back up or grease a rusty chain. One time, I was even loaned a bike for the afternoon for a test drive. Tons of bikes in hand, anyone can find what they need in their price range.
Modern bicycle store with hipster appeal. This is a new store to Lafayette, IN, as of summer 2010. Zoe Neal, the owner, is very knowledgeable about bicycles and he rides them religiously to commute, as well as for recreation. His employee, Alex, also passionately races road bicycles. In todays world, where it is hard to find a trustworthy auto mechanic, you can at least be certain that you can find a reliable and honest mechanic for your bicycle, here, at Virtuous Cycles.
I like supporting local businesses. Bought a used commuter bike from them in 2016. Great value- still like going back to see them now and then just to visit.
Almost didn’t come because it’s off campus. People here are friendly and nice, they figured out my bike’s problem in a second and fixed in minutes. Price is also cheap. Definitely worth it to go off campus to fix my bike.
Ive been slowly upgrading my road bike and come in once a week or so for parts. Always am impressed with the service and knowledge of the staff! Theyve helped me regain my love for cycling!
Fantastic, helpful, resourceful, and knowledgeable bike shop with friendly owners and staff. We just swapped out three bikes for another three. Craigslist could have gotten me three new bikes, but with the tuneup and the swap value and the good in supporting a small business, we are very happy with our experience.
They have wide selection of bikes both new and used. They can customize your bike with racks and change a seat or handle bars while you wait Very knowledgeable and patient answering questions
This place is THE place to go to for buying a bike. They have a huge selection of well maintained used bikes for approx. half the price of brand new bikes. The owner is very helpful and not pushy. He spent an hour with me to help me customize the bike I was buying with minimal charge.
Knowledgable staff. Great communication. Friendly. They truly care about what they are doing and the prices are fair. Support this local business!
Ive been to Virtuous many times. What a great shop- Zoe is super helpful. His prices arent an arm and a leg and a lot of repairs he can do right there while you wait. Im still rather new to bicycling but theyve always treated me well. I will continue to give VC my business. This is how all businesses should be ran.
Friendly service. Amazing building inside. Reccomend checking out the upstairs if the staff is not busy! Visit the bathroom, its neat in there!
Zoe is always great to work with.
The best place for repairs and service! Staff is super helpful and kind! A+++
