I’ve waited awhile to write this review to be sure no issues came up with my car post-work done being on it by Shiftin Gears. I used to go to another place in town for all my car needs until communication started falling apart with them over a course of months. Finally, after going in person twice, they sent me an outrageous quote for work to be done on my car. I talked to Steve and he said bring my car in, he would look at it and see what he could do for me. I’m glad I looked around, and will never return to the other place again. Steve gained himself a loyal customer in me through his timeliness, professionalism, knowledge of cars, but most importantly his fair prices. The place I originally was going to go to quoted me $1,497.90 for a job that Steve did for $623.58. A savings of over $850. The savings weren’t even the biggest point for me, Steve’s honesty was. He was willing to show me his invoices to see where he was coming up with the prices to charge me. He’s quick too. I can drop my car off in the morning and pick it up at lunch or drop it at lunch and pick it up after work. His team is fantastic too. Really great guys. I recommend them to everyone now.

(I would give 10 stars if it were possible.)I took my vehicle in for a starter replacement at Shifting Gears yesterday morning, dropped it off at 9:15 A.M. and Steve assured me that they would get on it shortly. To my surprise, Steve called me at 10:10 A.M. and told me that my Vehicle was ready. Steve was very professional and courteous and quoted me less than 1/2 the price as another local auto shop that I was using and at that other place, they started getting greedy with very high quotes and it always seems I have had to call the other auto shop much later after being told I would given a call when my vehicle was done, at this other shop, and when I call them they always say yeah, its been done for 2-3 hours now, but I never receive a phone call, unlike from Steve at Shifting Gears.Shifting Gears and Steve are my 100% Go-to One Stop Auto Mechanic Shop from here on out. Great place to get your car serviced. I had an appointment and dropped of the night before and was ready to roll in the morning. They are usually busy so call ahead!

Had many business dealings with this shop over several years and I believe it is one of the better shops because the owner is one of the b better owners

If I could give negative stars I would. Car was there for nearly two months and we had it towed somewhere else and the mechanic at the new place said the car was never touched, not even the battery was charged. We kept getting the run around and no calls unless we actually stopped in ourselves. DO NOT USE this place if you want your vehicle back in a timely manner. Not sure why they couldnt just be straight with us.

I like this garage. The only place in key west I trust with my duramax. I have used them for transmission issues, air conditioning issues, rear end issues, turbo issues, tire issues, window issues, air bag issues, and regular maintenance. Steve has been spot on. I have watched customer interaction while waiting for my vehicle and I never saw anything negative. You can be sure if there is a negative review; there is something more to the story. This is a very busy garage. They try to accommodate and help everyone. All my work was done in a timely manner with excellent service, and it was done right.

They were Johnny on the spot getting my truck in within minutes of when I called to repair a leaking tire, mounted it back on, and and even put the spare tire back underneath the truck for me while I waited, all for a very reasonable price. I highly recommend Shifting Gears.

Wow! These guys are awesome to say the least. I dropped in to get my tire patched. It was done in less than half an hour and the price was super reasonable. Really appreciate Steve and the great job he and his crew are doing!

I finally found a good mechanic in Key West that has a reasonable price! very helpful and reliable! was going for a tire alignment but the guy (i didnt got his name) checked and test drive my nissan altima and apparently it needs tire change and oil change. dropped off my car at 8:30am and done at 12pm. Now, it is working good again.

I cant say enough good things about Steve and his team. We had transmission trouble on our way to Key West. We stopped at a couple of places before we got to Key West and everyone recommended Steves shop. We were nervous thinking that it was going to be a major repair, but Steve and his team found the problem. It was a simple repair, and Steve sent us on our way. He is a straight forward and honest man. We made it home, over 1,000 miles away. Thank you Steve!

Very unprofessional! Took many weeks to do a job that they told me was a one-week job. The owner Steve kept delaying the finish date and giving me projected dates when it would be finished and then would change that date again. This happened many times. I had the transmission overheat on me while I was towing my boat and he told me to take it to a transmission shop. I did and the man told me it could possibly be the radiator. I change the radiator and have not towed the boat since to know if it will overheat.My transmission overheating light never came on prior to my new transmission rebuild job.I havent towed my boat with it since and dont know if that same problem will show up. Now I have another problem AAMCO transmission told me was in the transmission. I called Steve several times during the business day and nobody picked up and didnt get any voicemail and sent them an email and he says he didnt get it. I tried to explain to him this new problem and he tried to connect it to the old problem making it my fault that I didnt take care of the first problembefore I even explained to him what the problem was! Which I did in fact take care of.In my opinion it sounds like this man is generally combative in nature and is used to having problems with his customers it sounds like from his combative nature and the unfair tactics of trying to get off of something that I assume he thinks is his responsibility. I even put a new engine in the vehicle and the problem is still happening and he says I need to go back to the engine people LOL.

Steve is very professional and knowledgeable and his guys do great work. They kept our Chrysler 300 limo on the road and cold inside for years. They recently did a full brake job on my Porsche 911-pads, rotors, sensors, for less than half the dealers quote, and fixed the A/C by replacing a low pressure switch under the hood-impressive. They have my full confidence.

I went to key west on vacation and while there I had a gas leak. I was only in town for a few days and wanted to get it fixed before driving hours back home. I called around and finally came upon this place and they got me in and got the car fixed in just over a day. I was shocked but very pleased. I went to go pick up the vehicle and it was parked so I would approach it from the rear drivers side. I had given the car to them in good condition, with no scratches, dents or bumps. I paid for the work they did, got in and drove away. My hotel was about 10 minutes away and once I had parked, I walked around and it caught my attention that there was a large scratch and paint missing on the front passenger side (photo posted. White challenger). I have had this vehicle for 6 years and have never hit anything or been in any accidents. I did not drop the car off with damage and I’m very upset that I was not informed about this by Steve, the mechanic. While I will say they fixed the gas leak quickly and fit me in, I will say if you do use this place, please walk around your vehicle for any damage that may have occurred while in their hands.

Do not go there I promise you he will you will regret 💯!!!!!

The ONLY shop in the lower Keys that I trust. Stephen is knowledgeable, fair, and gets it done. I know he has a great following down here, I hope he finds a way to get a bigger shop.

Excellent! I spoke with Steve about 9am about installing a cruise control servo unit, that I had purchased on my own, on my Focus. I brought my car to the shop at 10 and they were done by 11:30. I had called other shops and they wouldnt give me even a rough estimate over the phone. Steve gave me a quote over the phone and the bill ended up being a bit less than he quoted. Beautiful!!! I wish I wasnt moving back to the mainland. Id use these guys for everything.

These guys are great, honest and they work hard. I had my transmission replaced and two electronic sensors replaced. They were able to fix my truck and are fair priced for the quality of work. Come here to get your car fixed!

If you ever have an automotive problem Steve is the only mechanic I trust in the Florida Keys. After 40+ years here Steve is the man to call. That said Steve is so fair that he UNDER charges. Be certain to tip him... and tell him to put the tip in his pocket. Otherwise he gives it to his people.He needs to stay in business and he under charges so tip him well.

Quick service, got my truck back faster than expected. Had a minor transmission issue, Steve diagnosed the issue quickly, didnt try to upsell anything, so far so good!

Best Mercedes place on Stock Island!

My 2002 Porsche boxster had a small electric fire in the dash I figured it would need to be towed to Miami to be repaired but Steve and the crew did an amazing job replacing the fried console and all the wires, he even reprogrammed everything including the keys.I would definitely recommend this place to anyone needing auto repairs.

Well, I called in few days in advance took an appointment, so I didnt have to wait because my schedule is pretty tight and I have a lot of things to do. The day comes, and I went to this shop to get an oil change, Steve told me to wait 15 minutes let me finish this car up. I said: Sir I have to take care of my business I will be back in 15 min or less. I came back in 7 min, and I waited in the office for 8 minutes. As he told me I went to him in exact 15 min, he was holding hes head because too many cars came in at once and I politely said, sir, if you are busy, I can come back some other day that totally fine with me. What happened was extraordinary, he responded so rudely when I was nice and polite. Worst experience I have ever had.

It looked like I had a leak in my car and it looked like it was transmission fluid..It turned out to be nothing and they ran the car through tests and looked it over and determined it. I had all my fluids and they didnt charge me. .I have never been to a garage with that integrity

My car was pulling to the side and I went to his shop hoping that Steve fix my car. I told him what the problem was and he said he could do it. After I left the car with him, he kept it for 8 days without hearing back from him. After 8 days I called him and asked about the car.His response was its gonna be fixed by the end of the day .. I went by the next day to get the car and it hadnt been worked on. He told me the same thing again - it will be ready by the end of the day..Next day the same story. and the next day, and the next day!!! Looks like his memory was getting erased at night before he goes to bed so he doesnt know what to do in the morning.After 3 or 4 days of this I even told him to stop wasting my time, if you cant do it or dont want to do it, just tell me and I will take my car somewhere else ... and of course he told me that THIS TIME my car is gonna be ready by the end of the day.Then he kept my car for another couple of days giving me the same answer.After 15 days without a car, while its sitting at his parking lot not being worked on, he finally calls me that my car is fixed and i can pick it up. it seems to be working fine. He replaced the control arms and was supposed to do an alignment.I had to drive to Miami the next day and took my car. On the way to Miami I realized that my alignment was completely off. But I asked Steve to MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WAS FIXED and ready to go. When I picked up the car I asked about the alignment as well .. His response was that it drives like a brand new car.On my way back from Miami, I stopped to look at the car and saw I was driving pretty much WITHOUT FRONT TIRES.I was afraid my tires were gonna blow up on me any second because they were so worn down. I had just put these tires on my car a few months prior. Steve responded that I need new tires now and he was sorry he didnt do the alignment.What I need is a better mechanic who can do the job and be responsible . Sorry but you are not the one.You didnt appreciate me calling you a fkng douchedag but honestly how would you call yourself in this situation ?

Dont use this shop ! I had a awful experience with this guys, I replaced the power steering pump on my Mercedes, paid around $ 800 for that, and next week I came back to them because I had some noise coming from steering, and Steve put some more fluid and said thats what it needed. I brought my car to Mercedes Center in Orlando and they had to change the reservoir for the fluid because it was cracked when was removed and GLUED back! Seriously ? Glue for Mercedes ? I would not recommend them to anyone who cares about their car.

They were super busy but still patched my flat tire in 30 minutes to get me back to my vacation. Great job!

Steve and the guys at Shifting Gears have kept our 2003 Mercedes ML500 on the road with over 220K miles. They stand behind their work, and Ive theyve been the least expensive place Ive tried in Key West. The only downside is theyre often swamped... but I cant say enough good things about them.

These guys are the best in the business in Key West. Steve and his crew are professional and extremely knowledgable. Their knowledge extends to import cars. They never cease to surprise me with the breadth of knowledge and experience they possess.

I dont know how I can even give him 1 star. He has had my Jeep for a Month and a half. 6 WEEKS AND STILL HASNT TOUCHED IT. Steve constantly lies and over promises and never delivers. Every time he promises it will be done he acts mad when we call and see if its done. He always complains about his mechanics not showing up and how he should close the doors. Well please CLOSE THE DOORS. Do yourself a favor and take your car elsewhere. This is the second time he has had my vehicle for over a month. And I initially brought it in as scheduled just for him to park in in the back. I was hesitant to post this as I still dont have my car but after the way he just spoke to my wife I cant hold back anymore. The Keys desperately needs other options for transmission work.

DO NOT GO HERE !I needed new rims and tires for my Dodge Avenger. He said he would have to order new tires and rims which was fine because no one else on the island does tires. After waiting 3 months for the rims and tires. He said the front tires fit but the back tires didn’t. So I waited another month.. he showed me black rims which I told him I did not. He then told me “well I have another set in the back I’ll put those on instead” when I went back to get my car the black rims were on my car. After waiting 4 months I was over it so I just took my car with those tires and rims (that I did not want) while driving to work (duval street) my car starting making a weird a noise so I parked it immediately. My brother then decided to drive the car to rock land key on his way there my left tire came off my car completely!! He said it was like driving a huge sleigh over a bridge. We called the tow company and shifting gears said they were sorry about the problem but NOW they had the right tires and rims. So another month went by and I got new tires and rims (the ones I actually wanted) just stock rims. Now as I’m backing up and turning my wheel my car made a scraping noise and something BROKE OFF MY TIRE ! This all started in october after coming back after the hurricane and now my car is still having problem with the tires. THIS PLACE IS A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. I should have just drove up the keys to get my tires done. AVIOD THIS PLACE AT ALLLLL COST

My 2005 BMW Z4 would not start. I had it towed to Shifting Gears and they had it diagnosed and repaired by the next day (new starter and starter circuit). They used OEM parts and charged less than a quote I received from my usual BMW auto repair shop in Miami.
