I enrolled my Daughter in Alliance AZO. She loves it. They treat her like family, the older girls do a great job looking out for her, and helping her. The Instructors are awesome.
The coaches here have cultivated a strong and close community here. They treated me very well though I had no prior experience and made me feel welcome in class. You can tell the coaches care far more about teaching than making a buck, in a good way, they were never pushy but rather welcoming, joining felt like entirely my decision.I loved the respect and discipline the coaches have instilled in their gym culture, senior athletes go around and greet newer athletes by name and a hand shake, every class ends with a show of respect and camaraderie with all the other athletes in class, within a few classes you will know the name of every member in your group. In a time when society is shunning social interaction it was a breath of fresh air to be back in a community that understands the hidden benefits of face to face interaction and making real genuine friends.

I went here a couple years ago. I wasn’t there for long. I had one of the best experiences out of any martial arts class I’ve taken. The teachers are very helpful and cool. Everyone works together to improve. Overall and amazing place.
The instructors are some of the best teachers and coaches Ive had the pleasure of working with. Everyone is incredibly nice and very enthusiastic. They have a very welcoming and patient atmosphere for first time beginners (especially ones with no prior combat training). The classes are very organized and structured. The owners provide great transparency and respect for their clientele. Overall, Aliance Martial Arts is a great place for anyone of any skill level to safely train. It has a staff and group of students that care about the growth and success to all incomers as an athletes and an individuals.
Was visiting from out of state, for a conference, and decided to check out the gym and sit in on a BJJ class. What a great group of people! I sensed nothing but respect and professionalism, they are extremely welcoming, and the instruction was great! In fact, I had so much fun I ended up doing 2 back to back classes, and I hope to go again. (Not sure what that one negative review is about because their description seems totally out of character with the people I rolled with.)
I trained at Alliance AZO for 6 years as both an instructor and a student. My experiences there have been nothing but pleasant. Im so happy to have formed the lasting relationships that extend to the owners, coaches, and fellow students. I have deep roots here and it is an honor to write, in great reverence, this review.First, Id like to address the reviews that are not 5-Stars. If you read deeply into the individuals experience, they did not train at Alliance AZO or leave much of a review, if at all. This should be taken into consideration. The lengthiest and lowest rated review was during a hectic community event and a bad first-impression was made. Knowing the coaching staff, activity of such behavior is addressed immediately and Im sure the individuals have been spoken to. The reputation of Alliance AZO is the Keystone to its success. As far as the classes, the unlimited training package is your best value. Classes typically run every single day of the week. Informal practice sessions are posted regularly on the Official Facebook page. It is such an active group that its hard to imagine being unable to train. The organization continues to grow with each passing year adding new students, lessons, and a host of different experiences to grow from, both individually and as a collective group.I cannot recommend this place enough. It is worth the investment. You will reach your goals and make friends along the way. The life lessons garnered through this process have made me slightly all the better. The only negative thing I can think of is that you have to move on at some point. But you can always come back!
I was a bit intimidated to start as I was brand new but from the first day I walked in to take a look around I was welcomed by three amazing coaches full of smiles and encouragement. They let me observe a class, came over to make sure I had all my questions answered and even help me get the gear I needed to start the next day. Been with them almost a year now.If you are looking for a place that has no judgment and welcomes everyone equally, this is where you belong. The coaches here really care and they make sure everyone has exactly what then need to be their best. Thank you to all the coaches for giving us a warm and welcoming environment to train in.
I trained here in jiu jitsu for two years. Definitely felt welcomed and enjoyed training with a wide variety of folks. From people actively competing to those just looking for a good workout. Good instruction and a lot of different class times. I moved out of Kalamazoo, and my time training at Alliance AZO is definitely one of the things I miss most!
Hands down best service Ive ever experienced! I walked in nervous and completely clueless and everyone welcomed me with open arms. They made sure I was comfortable and well informed it was the best possible experience for someone looking to get in to Martian arts in Kalamazoo!!! Great attitudes, great atmosphere, great people, great place I would recommend to anybody. Thank you AZO!
This gym is a great place to train at. The gym is clean organized and well kept. The instructors know thier stuff and are easy to train under. Its a great friendly atmosphere to train in. Great for a new beginner who is looking into getting into mix martial arts or someone who already has experience and wants to evolve their game. Alliance Azo also has a phenomenal kids program that caters to each age group. Honestly always enjoy training here.
Outstanding gym and staff, all super humble and talented people. The space versatile and there’s a variety of equipment and products offered as well.
This is the best dojo that I have ever had the privilege to be a part of. I have been involved w/martial arts for 22 years now and in all the time I have been involved there has never been a dojo that I was a part of or even visited that takes care of there students like this one does. It is more like a family get together than a gym. Everyone is a respectful of each other and makes sure that everyone does there best to keep each other safe and healthy. When it comes to teaching kids as well. I truelly feel blessed that my family and myself have been able to be a part of this wonderful group of coaches and martial artist. I look forward to many more years of training there.
Best gym I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending. Ron is truly one of the best around!
Great, family oriented gym. I cant say enough about it. If you are looking for a group of people to support you and help create the best you, there is no better place. Great reputation for a reason.
I would not recommend this facility for anyone who is interested in developing a sense of sportsmanship, self-control or character through martial arts training. We recently interacted with students and instructors from Alliance at the Muay Thai World Expo and in almost 11 years of participation in various martial arts, I have never encountered a group that was so disrespectful to the other competitors and spectators, and so lacking in reverence for the sport. The other competitors and coaches behaved in a way that honored the fact that each participant had invested significant effort and time in attending the World Expo. In contrast to this, I was really dismayed at the apparent lack of responsibility that Alliance’s trainers feel for encouraging integrity or humility in the impressionable young people under their charge. They seemed to have no problem with students grandstanding or attempting to intimidate opponents outside of the ring, for example. I have witnessed students of many ages and greatly divergent abilities benefit from participating in martial arts, not just physically, but intellectually and morally as well. I would strongly advise the individuals running Alliance to take a good hard look at the philosophy that they’re promoting there, as it will not serve these students well overall.
Our Son has been training at Alliance AZO for several years. It is a wonderful facility and the instructors that are teaching really care about the kids on and off the mat. I know that Alliance has helped shape our son into a confident and kind young man. I would highly recommend them to anyone that wants to build confidence in their child .
Have trained for 15 years and AZO is one of my favorite places to catch a class. Great environment, good for people with lots of experience or brand new to the art. Great people all around!
No matter what your goals are this is the place to be. Top notch coach’s for Jiu jitsu, Muay Thai, Judo. Wether your looking to just learn for self protection or if your looking to get back in shape or if your looking to even compete this is the gym to be at. Welcoming to all new and past members with open arms at all times. I say this place is family away from home, everyone looks after each other. Heck you might even make some lifetime friends from stepping out of your comfort zone and joining.
The atmosphere at AZO is amazing. The owners and coaches are extremely friendly and truly care about their students. Whether you are trying to compete or get in shape, everyone is willing to work with you to achieve your goal.If you are looking for martial arts in Kalamazoo, Alliance AZO is the place to be!
I started training at AZO about a year ago, when I finished college and returned to Kalamazoo. Facilities and instruction are excellent. Huge amount of mat space, plus a raised ring and a smaller mat in the front room. Lots of equipment to work with. The gym has nice locker rooms, bathrooms, and two private showers, which are all kept very clean. The jiu-jitsu team has several upper belts who are all excellent teachers and very willing to work patiently with new people. Theres also a strong community of women there, which is not the case at every gym, and its certainly something I appreciate. Everyone is very supportive. I was a little nervous jumping into a new gym, but everyone welcomed me with open arms. I found a team that unites folks of a very wide variety of ages and skill levels; its an environment that anyone with an interest in martial arts can feel comfortable in, while also getting a tough workout and learning a lot.
Impossible to put into words how much this place and more importantly the people in it mean to me. This is my home away from home, my second family, and I wouldnt have it any other way. Alliance AZO for life!!
Rick and dusty are great judo instructors highly recommend they offer so much
AZO has great coaches, facilities, and classes. Everyone is welcoming and excellent training partners. Kalamazoo is lucky!
The training is second to none, and the environment is one of no ego, no b.s., and everyone pushing each other to grow in their chosen art (s).
Ron and the entire Alliance AZO group of instructors and students are top notch! I live out of state and dropped in to Alliance AZO a half dozen times and really appreciated training here. Great training facilities, very positive environment, competitive members, great technical instruction, and super welcoming of outsiders and new BJJ students. I would recommend anyone considering starting BJJ, looking for a new school, or just looking to train while on the road, to give Alliance AZO a try - you wont be disappointed.
I moved from the west coast to the midwest to pursue my studies...a long way from home. My martial arts training--or any sport for that matter--started at Alliance AZO a year ago. Today, I cannot imagine my life without it. Since day 1, the people here have welcomed me with open arms--friendly, encouraging, knowledgeable. Every day I step on the mat, I am challenged to grow physically and mentally, and I find myself approaching the dynamic problems of the sport (primarily jiu-jitsu for me, but they offer a variety of disciplines) differently and more efficiently each time. This frame of mind has consequently percolated into my life outside of the gym. I am both humbled and proud to train at Alliance AZO and call this place home.
Alliance is a great gym with excellent coaching. I train BJJ there and highly recommend it.
Great classes for kids and adults. Lots of options for everyone to enjoy including Jiu Jitsu, MMA, Judo and Muay Thai. Clean gym too, which is important!! Love the gym family!
I have been training and competing for Allliance AZO for a little more than a few years. My progress was consistent due to my attendance and the careful guidance of all the instructors there. Thanks to the coach Ron Blake, Brian Skjold, David Hernandez, Matt Stringham, Colt Withers, and Jamie Blake I was able to compete and win gold medals at several tournament across Michigan and the surrounding states. I have gained insight through martial arts that can supplement any of my lifestyle goals while continually challenging myself to be a better person and martial arts practitioner. Great Place!
Awesome place, always clean. The coaches are knowledgeable and professional.
Awesome gym to train at, coaches go above and beyond ! Would recommend to anyone
This dojo saved my life. Gave me purpose.
