Dr Duncan is the best! He is the only vet that diagnosed my dog correctly and gave me 6 more productive years of her life! She unfortunately passed yesterday but again Dr Duncan was right there with me and extremely compassionate wonderful veterinarian. I will forever be grateful for him and the Oakland Animal Hospital. We have had some health issues with our puppy since we got him. Oakwood has always been there to see him, even in last minute situations. They make us feel at ease, especially with not being able to go in with him. They call and explain everything in detail, so we’re not ever left questioning our next steps. Also, being able to get medications is fast and easy. We will definitely continue to send our puppy to them!

Our baby Zelda broke her jaw after hours and Dr. Barko took care of her as if she was one of his own. Every time we call to see how she is doing he takes the time to talk to us. Such a great vet.

Oakwood Animal Hospital is phenomenal. We have a dog who had severe deformities in one of his legs, and they referred us out to a wonderful expert to fix his situation. They have cleared schedules to treat my animals in emergency situations, and when my old cat couldnt be helped, they gave me the time I needed to make decisions and go through with what was best. They provided me with both privacy and comfort before, during, and after the procedure. As long as I have pets in this area, they will be in the great care of the vets at Oakwood Animal Hospital.

Drs. Barkow and Martinez have been mainstays of our dogs care. Dr. Martinez even ran back to the car to emphasize how good a boy he had been, which is nice to hear since our dog has a lot of vet anxiety and is not above lots of growling while hes there. Theyre excellent at getting back to us with his test results, too.

Dr. Barkow took care of both of our dogs for almost all of their 15 years who both passed last year. He is caring, compassionate and an excellent veterinarian.

Where to start, theres so much we want to say about our friends of more than 30 years at OAH. Between our own companions and those we fostered and rescued they have treated dozens of animals for us. In all these years, in all the routine treatments, in all the emergencies, in all the tough, tough euthanasias and all the joy and tears weve shared throughout, they have unfailingly delivered the absolute best in care, treatment, compassion and genuine friendship.We were co-founders and long term members of an animal rescue group and, as such, dealt with a number of local veterinarians. All were good and caring or they wouldnt have become vets in the first place, but none in our estimation checked all the top boxes like Drs. Jonathan Barkow and Dawn Martinez and the staff who upheld their high standards.We recently moved across state and will no longer be able to call on them for everything having to do with the best for our pals. Thats our loss--a big one--but were grateful for what theyve given us and wish them many more years of doing great things for the animals entrusted to their care.

This is a wonderful veterinary clinic with some of the most compassionate doctors I’ve ever met. I’m part of the 3rd generation of pet owners who have brought our animals here. They have an after-hours emergency line which is nice in case you run into a situation at night it’s nice to talk to someone who is familiar with your pet. I’ve also had both of the 2 veteran doctors contact me on weekends, even Sunday evenings, to answer my questions and concerns. It also seems like they really care about involving the pet parents in the plan of care instead of simply prescribing whatever their main recommendation is. My one complaint right now is that they appear to have lost some of their younger vets during the Covid shutdown and it’s aftermath, so getting an appointment usually involves booking really far out, but that does seem to be getting better within the last few weeks.

I get very informative information from everyone there. I value their handling with my kitty and they are all very friendly. I wish I could establish a regular vet that saw my cat every time I brought her in. The office is always clean and convenient from my home.

As of June of 2021 they’re not accepting new patients. This is great when I have a time concerning fracture and I’m just pushed away by every vet clinic known to man. They don’t care about your pet.

Oakwood Animal Hospital has the most caring, empathetic, and knowledgeable veterinarians.My cat got very ill during the Holidays and it all happened so fast. I felt so thankful to be able to call the after-hours emergency number several times during the evening, weekend, and even on New Years Day to get expert advice on how to care for him. Dr. Barkow always answered my calls and communicated everything very thoroughly to me. On New Years Day and many week days around the Holidays, Dr. Barkow, Dr. Martinez, & Dr. Kim stayed late into the evening doing all they could to care for him.Sadly, I had to put my kitty down the day after New Years, but I can rest assured knowing they tried everything they could before we got to that point and they made sure he wasnt experiencing any pain, this means so much to me. I am forever grateful and if I ever have another pet, I will no doubt take them to Oakwood Animal Hospital.

The veterinarians & staff at Oakwood Animal Hospital are always caring & explain any difficulties with my cats. They have a great deal of knowledge & use it to help my cats feel better & become healthier.

Wonderful care here. This was the first time I had a cat needing surgery that was more than an abscess, but Dr. Barkow did a great job of explaining why the surgery was necessary as compared to alternative treatment. He and others did a great job, my cat is quite content, and I am very pleased.

We have been using Oakwood Animal Hospital for nearly twenty years. They are caring and professional. Our newest rescue dog has some health issues that need consistent care, but Im feeling more confident than anxious due to the care and training from the doctors and staff here.

I was up three nights with one of my three boys, and I was thinking only things would get better. Not so. Called the next morning, I am sure with panic in my voice and told them that my little guy needed to be seen. Informed them how he had been up for the last three nights, unable to sleep, (me too)and that he seemed in discomfort. As always the girls at the desk with no appointments available said they would talk with Dr. Barkow about what to do. I was told to drop him off and they performed multiple test on his busy day, and we came up with a plan, and today I have a dog who slept through the night, and took a good walk with the sun shining. This has happened to us multiple times as my dogs and their strange health issues keeps us on our toes, and the staff at Oakwood continue to take care of them with love and respect, and that is how I feel about Oakwood. Thank you at the front desk for always relaying my concerns to the doctors and the doctors calming my fears about my three boys, two who are 12 and one who is 10.

They wanted us to go to MSU for very expensive testing. Instead, I took my best friends advice and took him to Oakwood. After a couple of appointments and med changes, we changed his food. Allergies gone! Have gotten through this last two years with no need for meds.I would recommend them to anyone looking for a new vet, or anyone new to the area looking for a fantastic place to take their fur baby.

I just spoke with Alyssa at Oakwood. It’s important to note that right now ALL animal hospitals and vets around here seem to be completely overwhelmed by COVID-19 and many simply can not accommodate new patients. Alyssa was amazing. She talked to me on the phone for 15 minutes (and I know they’re busy) and walked me through every single question I had about treatments, plans, prices, etc. I somehow figured she might get “credit” for selling me a “Puppy Plan” (discounted/packaged services) and she said no they do not. She was great — made me feel super comfortable and answered every single question for me in detail. It’s been 12 years since we had a dog and we live in a different community but we will still bring our new puppy to Oakwood Animal Hospital because of people like Alyssa.

My dog had an ear issue. My normal vet tried to push me out over a week to be seen or charge me extra as an “urgent visit” for today.My sister recommended Oakwood as an alternative. Oakwood animal hospital is very cautious about the coronavirus, and that’s a good thing. After my cat’s visit, the vet called me at home the next day to check on how my cat was doing and if I had any questions about my experience. I remember when MDs used to do that, many many many years ago. It was a breath of fresh air!

My dog has a very anxious temperament, and Dr. Martinez was very patient and kind to her. Best experience at a vet we have ever had! She made my dog feel as comfortable as she possibly could before doing any invasive treatments.

We took our first dog to Oakwood Animal in 1992. They were always excellent with our dogs care and very supportive as he went thru radiation and chemo in 2000. We had to move in 2004 and when we returned 13 years later we returned to this excellent vet practice with our elderly, epileptic dog and our puppy. I cant praise the staff enough! The dogs have always dragged me into the building!

We can’t recommend Oakwood Animal Hospital highly enough! All of our pets have been patients there for as long as we’ve been in Kalamazoo (30) years. Their excellent treatment and compassion for our pets and our family (through those difficult times when you lose a pet) has been wonderful and healing. We’d give six stars, if we could.

After moving to the area I tried several veterinarians for my kitten & no other places are nearly as caring & honest. At Oakwood they have payment plans & are also very honest about what is actually needed for the animal & are never trying to rip people off. Very caring and would recommend!

They take wonderful care of senior pets AND their people. We started going to Oakwood Animal Hospital because we wanted the best possible care for our senior dog, Billy, and everyone said Oakwood was the place for that. And we have been super impressed both at their competence and their caring. Dr. Barkow in particular is a treasure. Hes super experienced and can handle the kinds of complex medical situations you see in so many seniors. AND he is incredibly caring, making himself available 24/7 during crises. I love Oakwood Animal Hospital and recommend it to everyone!

My dog is elderly and may live another 6 weeks, 6 months, 6 years, who knows. The care that they provide is good and they take the time to explain what the next steps are. Staff is always friendly and quick to take care of any questions, concerns, or scheduling requests. Will definitely be taking my dog here for all foreseeable future visits because of the overall experience.

The veterinarians here are top notch, deeply caring & compassionate. They make sure I understand the instructions for care, and do everything possible to make visits a positive experience for my cats. The staff (both receptionists & vet techs) are wonderful, and the work culture is excellent. I have been using them for decades, and wouldnt go anywhere else.

Oakwood is home to a fantastic group of supportive and caring doctors, vet techs, and administrative assistants who collaborate with one another to provide the absolute best care for our babies. We’ve been to a few vet offices in Kalamazoo but none of them compare to the level of veterinary care Oakwood provides.

Im sure the vets are great, but do not use the online scheduling system. We made an appointment, got a confirmation by email of the appointment, showed up and were told we were not in the system. It takes quite a bit of work to arrange schedules for appointments. There was no effort made to accommodate us that day even though we had confirmation of an appointment.

Overall very happy with service provided here. Caring, competent vets and staff. My only complaint is that they are quick to do tests and upsell without explaining costs first, which can add up very quickly.

Dr Barkow and staff great! The reason for the 3 star review is the ridiculously expensive puppy plan that doesnt cover anything but the vaccinations (that are dirt cheap at tractor supply). My wife was pressured into giving $450 which gave us about $50 worth of shots.Otherwise we are very happy with this vet.Please tell us how your vaccines are different than the ones from other vets. Every month $40 goes to you for absolutely nothing! We still pay for medications and visits while getting the $50 worth of shots comped. TOTAL RIPOFF!

Dr. Martinez and Dr. Walker are the most compassionate vets I have ever seen. They take the time to listen, go over the prognosis and treatment options and care for my dog as if he were their own. Also going above and beyond what is expected. I can’t thank them enough for the time they have invested in us. ♥️

Blake and his staff were amazing. I got him to laugh when he got the play on Jackies name Jackie O Russell, being a Jack Russell. He had a great bedside manner and Jackie felt very comfortable with his attentiveness. I could not recommend a better place for my girl to go.

Everyone in the office is so helpful and welcoming. They really care about your pet and will make sure they get the best care.

The staff here takes great care of our new puppy and two cats. They are constantly returning our phone calls and sitting down with us to explain medical issues. We ask a lot of questions. Their emergency weekend on call doctors, though expensive, have been a big help and sometimes needed.

Oakwood has been taking care of our various dogs over the last 15+ years. All of the vets have been very caring towards our animals and our family. They always present various treatment options and work with us. Love the staff as well.

I had a situation with my pet and the vet was very understanding but unfortunately the front office person was very rude and very unprofessional. You would think working in the front office of a business that customer service would be a high priority but this obviously is not the case.

I have never had problems with regular check ups. The vets and staff are all very caring and knowledgeable. But tonight I needed to get in touch with their on-call vet. Their posted after-hours emergency number rang and rang, then disconnected, over and over again.EDIT: After about a half hour of trying to call the number, the after-hours message finally picked up and I was able to get in touch with the on-call vet. Also, I posted a message on Oakwoods facebook page and got a reply within the hour. I appreciated that response.

I took my cat in who was having urinary issues, peeing in very unusual places like my bed and couch. 455$ later after a blood work and urine sample ( which the urine took 1 week to get results back) found he was healthy. 455$ for that... Sprinkle rd. Vet quoted me 225$ for the same exact thing but would have had results the same day!!!! The urine sample came back (a week later!) with a small amount of crystals and blood. I was told nothing serious just needs new diet food and (kitty Prozac). The day after the results came back my cat started acting strange with looking like he was going to pee but then ran from me. The next morning he looked very ill and and was walking around limping and laying down with his legs twitching. He was super sick and I knew it. I called Oakwood animal hospital and told them He is very sick and he keeps showing signs of being blocked. The only thing they said to me is bring him in for a recheck up fee of 35$. I asked if they could just get him in scense I already paid 455$ a week ago. She said no it’s still a 35$ recheck fee. So I set an appointment and waited in the exam room, where I called Spinkle rd Vet, which told me get him here now. I left the appointment and went straight to sprinkle rd. Also, they did not charge me an office visit! He hasn’t ever been there either! They did the emergency procedure less than an hour later because he was blocked. The people are nice there at Oakwood animal hospital but please be aware they are about the money!!!! The price difference for an appointment with blood work and urine specimen is 225$!!!!!! And I had to wait a week for the urine results!!!! Please do not go there... SAVE YOUR PET!! and SAVE YOUR MONEY!!! Drive a little further for a Vet who actually cares about your pet and not how much money they can make!!!! Please! Oh and if your still reading this... the doctor at Oakwood animal hospital reassured me they don’t work with pricing, and it’s a corporate business!!!! Please be aware!!!!!!!

I recently relocated to Kalamazoo and needed to find a vet in the area during an emergency with my dog. Oakwood Animal Hospital got me in quickly and they were amazing. Dr. Barkow was extremely knowledgeable and really took the time to get to know my dog and what was going on with him. He explained everything thoroughly and even discussed numerous options with me rather than just insisting on one form of treatment. It was very refreshing to speak with a vet that wasnt concerned with getting in and out of the examination room. I felt like my dog was treated as if he was the only one in the building. I also found the LVTs and front office staff to be extremely kind and knowledgeable as well. They knew everything that was happening with my pet despite having numerous other patients in the building. I could go on and on about the great care my dog received but instead Ill just leave it at this - I would HIGHLY recommend this office and will now be returning for all of my future veterinary needs.ETA: Two years later and Im STILL impressed with this veterinary office. My dog had a bout of pancreatitis recently and OAH helped us through it and I am forever grateful. Dr. Barkow remains one of my favorite vets Ive ever had the pleasure of coming across. He takes his job incredibly seriously and his intelligence on veterinary medicine is truly impressive. There is no better feeling than knowing you can trust someone else with your fur baby especially when you dont know whats wrong or how to help them. Dr. Kim also provided top notch care throughout our entire ordeal and often called in just to check on my dog and see how he was doing. I just cant thank or compliment this office enough.
