The woman answering the phone was rude and could barely speak English intelligibly. Rude and nasty. Said I should all animal control - which was their selection number 2 on the machine that processed the calls first. So I redialed the number (after the rude woman hung up on me) and this time selected #2 for Animal Control. And I got a recorded message saying Sorry, this number is for Animal Control only. And it disconnected me. Dont waste your time calling this facility. Its a waste of tax money and the people are rude and utterly unhelpful.

While I cant say that any encounter with these guys was something I wanted to do ( sick cat, someone elses dog ) I will say that when I do I getthere I always am treated well and openly, as well as respect, empathy, and genuinely caring. They are just nice/professional people.Recently, actually yesterday I heard a commotion from my backyard. I had seen two dogs earlier running through and of course sniffing everything in sight. This was the 5th or 6th time they did so and because we have a colony here they always chase the cats away.So thats the back story so back to the situation aforementioned.I heard a lot of barking far too much to not investigate. Sure enough,I look down at the drainage ditch and there is a 3 week old kitten in the water soaked to the bone with the two dogs playing with it.I immediately dove in the water fought off the dogs whichbreed is known to attack when you least expect it and just thrust myhand into what amounted to a hornets nest as this tiny little thingwas just hoisted into the air with two oncoming dogs which I screamed away saying NO! as forcefully as I could. The little one fought me of course as Im charging into the houseto hopefully get him to safety and some kind of peace. Right at this moment hes meowing probably for his Mom doesnt know what to make of me yet.Im 67 so that must have been two stories to a small animal.I cleaned up that little fighter drew some blood and lots of scratches.Called these guys and got maybe the nicest guy I ever met. Hes an ex-copnamed Henry and last time he came here he left such an amazing impression that I never forgot him.Hes so easy to speak with and way understanding.I was stoked to see him again just for that reason. Hes a good guy.The type that you would love to hang with have a beer and if youhave beer shoot the excrement ( since were talking about cats. )Gotta give props when they are deserved. Its a good thing to know that although these guysare a kill shelter (which obviously is notwhat I want to be affiliated with) and Im sure the staffas well. Unfortunately in this state and more particularlyhere in Jax.There can be no termination date for compassion.I take these guys at their word because I trust themto do what they say and err on the side of doing theright thing. Its the best place to go if you need help. Thanks for reading youll be glad you did!PEACEBSF

They are always so kind here and I love the work they do. Yes, they are a kill shelter but from the info they gave me it is humane euthanasia. I bring strays periodically and I know they will be taken care of here! They spay, neuter, microchip, vaccinate, and have foster programs that they work with if they get over crowded. If youre looking for your next family member this is the best place to go.

I was heading to pick up my daughter from school when I see a car in the middle of the road and a few people out of their cars stopping cars from moving forward. I got out of my car and saw a dog injured and dirty. The couple had called animal control but couldn’t wait so I decided to put the dog in the back of my car and drive it to the shelter instead of waiting for animal control on a busy street. The couple helped me carry the dog into the car. Thankfully Animal control arrived and asked the couple what had happened and to avoid anymore injuries taking the dog in and out of a car, I offered to drive the dog to the shelter by following his truck. The dog began having a seizure. I panicked and called the Animal Control Officer that I was following to the shelter. He helped me calm down. He was very professional and helpful.

Just got off the phone with them. My house is overrun by cats. Ive been on the surrender list sjnce this time last year. I might have COVID. They said that they tried calling me back in the end of May, but never heard back. They say this is why they have not called me since. This is ridiculously fallacious, because I literally have the phone records of me calling back not even an hour later. I did this not once, but TWICE! I left message both times. When I called, I started the call off telling her that I was going to need help with two things. I state the first, she got defensive when I tried to tell her that I DID call back, and basically pushed me off the phone when I tried to ask about the second thing. I will say, she was clearly trying to remain courteous and professional, despite clearly a little irked. And while I understand, I have Chronic Epstein Barr. My A/C is broken. I need to get tested for COVID. There are WAY too many cats in my house. Everything is breaking. The state of my house is very literally killing me. I think I have every right to feel that this is getting ridiculous. And its such a shame, because everyone there is always so understanding and patient in person.

I cant say enough about the Onslow County Animal Shelter. They have worked so hard within the last two years to make the shelter what it is today. They have implemented a Foster Care program and added awesome Community Outreach Coordinator. They also have Rescue Coordinator, too, that works day and night to find some of the furry friends a rescue to go to. We fostered over 10 dogs for the shelter in the year 2015 alone. They were always there for the dogs needs whether we needed food, medications, or just advise... They have always been there for us. The staff is friendly and dedicated that they make you feel like family. The staff have a tough job to do, but they never lose the enthusiasm, love, and care for each pet. If you need a new furry friend, Onlsow County Animal Shelter is the place to go. They have several homeless pets that need a good loving home. This place should seriously consider implementing an entire new staff. The current one is unprofessional and rude. The staff makes snide comments under their breath to potential adopters. The staff also does not open the door for a crowd of customers when it is pouring rain outside and it is five minutes to opening. One thing in particular that bothered me about this place, is the five day hold. I understand the animals brought in need to be checked out before contact with the public. However, I visited them on a Saturday to inquire about a dog on their website, and I was told it was still on the five day hold, but to come back on Tuesday because thats when it will be available. The shelter is closed on Sunday and Monday, so there should have been no way of adopting the dog until Tuesday. Yet, when I came back on Tuesday, I was told the dog had already been adopted through the foster home it was staying at. What is the point of advertising a pet through the shelter if you are going to tell people who come for it that it cant be adopted because its on a five day hold--but that same five day hold does not apply to the foster home and it can be adopted there anytime?? And shouldnt the staff inform people that they can go to the foster home and adopt the pet there? I definitely was not told that. The staff there is awful.

Being an animal lover I want to help every animal I can. However, I brought kittens here months ago that I found in a parking lot and they pretty much told me I was lying. A few months later, I have four kittens I have been fostering and trying to find homes. So I called to ask if they could take them in, they said no but they could put me on a waiting list which was fine (hoping by then I could find these kittens homes.) just a few days ago, my husband and I noticed these three kittens around our neighborhood without a mother they seemed friendly bc everyone was trying to help feed them. My husband called this morning ask if he could bring them in bc we couldn’t take in anymore cats they said yes. He got there and they were EXTREMELY unprofessional and accused him of lying bc I was on a waiting list. Basically questioning his integrity as a marine and they said “ are you a marine? Well you should think about that” then they asked if I was his wife (name was in the system) already being on a waiting list for these other kittens we have at home fostering. Long story short, I’m very unhappy with how the blonde girl handled herself. I work at a vet office (vet tech) and if we didn’t think this was our last resort for these babies we would’ve never done it. I’ve volunteered at multiple animal shelters and have NEVER been to one this judgmental and unprofessional. If they treat people this way, I can only imagine how they treat animals. I am agreeing with the other people here in regards to loose animals on your property. When I called dispatch and Animal Control called back he said there is basically nothing we can do.WRONG. In the past they have set traps for nuisance animals and possible dangerous strays who repeatedly leave their stool in the yard. You mean to tell me that you supposedly have to get the call in the middle of them doing it right that moment (and possibly attacking you at that moment) as if they will get there in time.....When I called main dispatch to followup on this they refused to answer. This is a disgrace and quite frankly laziness on their part! This is organization is great. I have been a dog foster for about a year taking home several dogs and preparing them for adoption. I have also volunteered several hours inside the building assisting the staff care for the animals. In an attempt to be succinct I will summarize this shelter.(1) Almost every kennel at this shelter is occuppied. Some kennels have multiple animals to save space. Families who foster are the only reason more animals are not euthanized here.(2) The animals here do get sick. Most catch a kennel cough in the same manner that Marines catch the field crud. It is a result of the environment and will go away. The staff attempts to keep fresh air circulating through out the building (weather permitting) and keep the place as clean as possible.(3) Animals may have some type of worm. The shelter is overpopulated and these ailments spread like a virus. The staff tests each animal however, an animal can become sick easily after being tested.(4) The staff is overworked and underpaid. The staff works past the closing time to ensure that the animals are prepared for the night. It takes a lot of work to clean those kennels. There are not many volunteers to assist. Although I have met some amazing volunteers, a few are unable to keep up with the workload.(*) Dealing with abandoned animals with no end in sight works the emotion of anyone who actually cares about the lives of animals. I cannot tell you how many times I have been in the waiting area and heard people surrender animals claiming not to be the owners when they obviously are. Just to try to avoid paying the surrender fee.(**) If you are looking for a four-legged companion, check this place out. Heck, some of these animals only have three legs after some of the abuse they have experienced prior to going to this shelter, they need love too and can be amazing additions to your family.

Throughout the years I have adopted quite a few animals from this shelter and suffice it to say they do an excellent job. It is what it is, this is a county facility subjected to county funding and donations through kind people and a couple local non-profits. 15 years ago this facility had a very high kill rate but now theyve made many changes and improvements. People that complain on here are ridiculous. Animals get sick. Most of them arrive at the shelter sick because theres a lot of people in this area that dont give a damn about them. They dont get them fixed and dont bother to bring them to vets and then they have litters with diseases. You cant fault a shelter because your dog has worms. Being a county facility they bring in hundreds of animals a month. Those animals bring in parasites and viruses and ticks and everything else under the sun. They have limited resources and facilities and a small staff for the amount of work that has to be done. If you think things could be better youre probably right but instead of bashing the shelter on google and scaring people away how about you spend a day volunteering there and help fix what you think is wrong theyd love to have the help.

But our 2 one, we were told on the phone that he was on a “kill list” and had less than 48hrs to find a home or he was gonna be put down. I called the shelter and spoke to some woman, so who is gonna fact check when a dogs life is on the line? So I dropped everything I was doing to go get him. I’m not from here so I’m not sure how shelters work around here. But I was recently told that they do NOT have a “kill list” and I’m just assuming this is how they guilt trip people into adopting pets. I feel like a fool because I’ve recommended this shelter to MANY friends who too were told that there was a “kill list”.Definitely would NOT recommend them now.

Last month my husband and I adopted our new family member Cheddar. He is a mix of hound and Lab. I always wanted to rescue a dog from a shelter, but have always been too scared to ever go in one for fear of becoming depressed. I was pleasantly surprised to walk into a clean building with kind and caring staff members. Everyone that I met that day really cared about the animals in the shelter. I am shocked this shelter has a low rating! I think people have to understand that this shelter is operating on a limited budget and relying on the help of volunteers. People also have to understand that when rescuing an animal you are more than likely going to have to spend some money in case they have kennel cough or worms. These minor inconveniences are cured with a simple visit to the vet (which people should be doing with any new family pet anyway)! This shelter is completely over populated with wonderful, sweet, loving animals because of dirt bag people that have thrown them away like garbage. If it wasn’t for the wonderful staff at this shelter my beautiful loving dog Cheddar would have probably frozen to death somewhere in the woods…alone, and scared. I have had several text messages from staff at this shelter asking how our new family member was acclimating to his new home. The major goal of this shelter is making sure these deserving animals have forever homes. I thought it was wonderful that staff members got in contact with us to make sure we were doing well with our new pet. Rescue animals are the most grateful, loving, and loyal pets you will ever bring into your home. I have a very picky type A personality, and have high expectations… and this shelter met every one! Please don’t hesitate…there is a friendly staff member and a wonderful pet waiting for you!

A lot of people dont realize how overwhelming it can become at the shelter but the staff really does everything they can to help the animals. They have made leaps and bounds in a positive direction over the past few years.

This is by far the worst shelter I have ever been to. Starting this off my husband and myself were looking for a dog to adopt and the people at the front were so nice, at first. We found a dog that we both loved and just had to take her home. Well thats when things went down hill and quickly. She was an amazing dog and we loved her but she was so sick so sick that we couldnt possibly take her to a vet. We thought it was just kennel cough which as well know is an easy fix. No it was much worse than what we thought she had blood in her phlegm our walls were covered in it and would not eat or drink anything we tried it all. Every brand we could think of we bought she didnt even try to touch it. Then she was not using the bathroom at all we took her out every hour and she never used the bathroom the whole time she was here. Then when we took her out with us she was showing a huge amount of dog aggression. She was an amazing dog after all that but from what people we have spoke to they said we needed to take her back cause there was something really really wrong with her. We took her back, we gave them the toys and collar we bought for her she loved them and the people were pissed that we were bringing her back which I can understand but they are so mean it was not our fault that they gave us a dog that was so sick there was nothing we could do for her. My husband asked for a refund and to this day we have never received it. No dog belongs in that shelter at all I feel so bad for them behind the glass. I should have read these reviews before I went there. We ended up getting a puppy else where and as we suspected get had kennel cough from the dog we got at the shelter even after cleaning this place top to bottom.

Offered no help for stray animals. Had to damn near give up blood just to find out where I could find help for stray animals. The lady there was very judgemental.

Relatively easy to use the web site. Hours of operation are not convenient for most people but are clearly listed.

The reviews here are ONLY from people who have had bad experiences, as all of those who had a good experience didnt care to write about it. In 2008, my family adopted a cat from there. We experienced friendly staff and had no problems. I know for a fact that they are not a high kill facility. There are plenty of dogs who have been there for way longer than a week. However, they do not have the facilities to take in and care for ALL of the animals they receive. People complain about the hours of operation, but dont seem to understand that it takes money to keep staff there and it is not like the place is loaded. They rely on donations. Sometimes the place gets dirty, but if they dont have volunteers on hand it is hard to keep up on everything. They have few staff members. It is a lot of work, and I dont think that people realize that. Just because the staff arent good with people (which I havent experienced but maybe they are to some) doesnt mean they are bad to the animals. Go experience the place for yourself, you may have a good experience.

My husband and I adopted a sweet baby from Onslow County Animal Shelter and we dont regret that decision. Some of the reviews Ive read are ridiculous. We found a stray that the staff was kind, supportive and help in helping us get her in their system so that she could find her furever home. I cant say enough good things about the staff and their attitudes when it comes to making sure the animals go to good homes. Maybe some of you condemning them should take some time and volunteer to help or even better donate

My family and i just adopted a wonder dog from there, and the staff were all awesome. They call him by the name we wanted him to have while we waited for the 5 day adoption time. They do the best with what they have and let me tell you, thats a lot.... If youre in the need of a pet I would recommend them any day of the week!!!

I feel they could make more of an effort to avoid euthanasia by contacting no kill shelters and transporting animals to them if they arent adopted within the allowed time frame
