I just went for curbside pickup for pet food assistance, the lady gave me a bad vibe at first then before she left she decided to make a comment “nice car” and made a face. Almost like saying oh you have a nice car but you’re getting donations for your pets, like that honestly made feel really upset I cried as soon as I pulled out because she doesn’t know me or what I’m going through at at the moment. I rarely ask for help and when I do I get this treatment. Never going back.
Abusive towards animals – This is the first Shelter that we’ve come across that actively does not want to adopt out their animals. The want to keep them in cages. Now the only way around this is to LIE to F4L about the animal’s experiences at your loving home. TELL F4L WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR. If they ask about the animal going outside, simply say that the animal will never go outside or see the light of day. In their opinion, it is the best way to care for an animal, which is no better than what the animal is currently experiencing in cages at their F4L facility. After research, we found that numerous animals are adopted out without major consideration of human personality, background checks, income, address, work and work-from-home history, previous animal ownership, or other major factors that should come into play when adopting out a living, breathing creature. They simply want to know “is the animal going to be allowed outside?” – so again, just lie on your application. My fiancé and I, cat owners our entire lives, made the mistake of telling the truth: allowing the cat to venture outside in our very large, fenced-in backyard supervised with us by its side. Our adoption application was denied on this fact alone.Their lack of integrity and abusive nature towards their animals is just sad. They are actively passing up on loving homes in an attempt to “standardize” the adoption process of a living creature, consider it a “check-the-box” mentality. This is abusive towards animals that are patiently waiting for their forever homes. The animals deserve much, much more than the absolute trash management and people controlling their destinies.
Please be beware of this so called Adoption Center as they are running a place that is not for the welfare of the pets but their altered Ego and scam. They think some volunteers and so called employees know every thing and in their mind they have this know all attitude and say they are doing it for the welfare of the pet.People stay away from this crooks running this agency and who ever has been put to distress should file a legal complaint on these people to not do this kind of unprofessional dirty tricks to any one after charging high price compared to other Adoption Centers they should be shut down completely as they are not looking at the welfare of pets but theirs.
Love this place!! My wife and i adopted a cat that presented with some behavior issues, but FFL helped every step of the way! Detailed assessment, one on one behaviorist consultations, specific training recommendations, and unfortunately eventually return processing, so they could give her some devoted behaviorist attention. They have a great bedside manner and you can really tell that they all love the animals theyre working with. We ended up adopting a pair of 4mo old kittens who are very socialized and loving already, thanks to FFLs excellent network of fosters!Cant say enough good things about the staff and mission here, 10/10 recommend if you want to donate to their cause or adopt a new family member. ❤️
Very quick and easy adoption process. Love the kitten adopted here, very socialized and sweet. Would recommend adopting from here.
I would not recommend adopting from this shelter there description are not honest about the animals. I was looking at a cat and didnt know it had a serious biting problem until I had to speak with a behavioral person. The cat description played this off as a cat just getting scared in a crate. I come to learn that the cat openly going up to people biting them and drawing blood. These place is openly lying about there animal on the site
A truly caring and professional organization. They use LIMA (least intrusive, minimally aversive) methods and have a behavioral training program. They have a solid volunteer base with knowledgeable staff. Potential adopters are interviewed to find a good match, so that it’s a good experience for both the animal and potential adopter.
I adopted my sweet pup from Friends for Life about 3 years ago. She is the BEST dog I’ve ever met. I couldn’t have picked a better dog. The staff is so kind and genuinely cares about everyone’s best interests.
Always so friendly and helpful. It is a pleasure to be associated with them. Today we brought our new cat 😺 Cardi home. Letting her ease into her new home.
The waitress was nice and helpful but it wasnt busy there and it took forever for some wings to come out. We had four orders and two came out hot and the other two orders came out cold. 😐
An amazing organization to adopt pets from and can help with any info you need for your pet
My wife and I adopted 3 terrific cats in 2020 named Peter, Godiva, and Moira. Im not big on curbside service, but we feel FFL have handled everything well based on our experience. If we adopt another pet in the near future we will definitely be back.
This is a great place to adopt your next family member. My husband and I really wanted a dog and they have a program called sleepover to see if its a best fit for you. Unfortunately for us we work way to much to give our little pup time and attention and they understood. I love this place and when we are actually ready and have time, I will be going back!!!
I recently started fostering a family members Kitty when that family member fell ill. Unfortunately I cannot keep her. A friend suggested FFL after various social media encounters to adopt her proved to be strange and untrustworthy characters. Cady and Heather were wonderful at answering the thousand questions that I had to make sure the cat would go to a healthy happy home. They offered psychological pet training, food assistance, Medical Care. Truly a great organization! This morning I drop the kitty off for her 7-Day sleepover trial with her hopeful furever home.As soon as Im in the position 2 adopt another senior dog I absolutely will turn to FFL.
Great organization! Highly recommend them. They do a great job matching people with the right pet. Ive rescued a dog from them and have also received food to care for community cats in my neighborhood.
This place is a scam!!! Do not donate or support!!! I would give NO stars. These people would not help save a dog by pulling him from BARC. Transportation was arranged, adopter was waiting and ready and they would not help. Over and over, No maam, we cannot help you. It was that they WILL NOT HELP. They should be CLOSED PERMANENTLY. USELESS!!!!
I love this place. FFL changes the life of families and animals, they are just great. They do a wonderful job saving cats and dogs, this is where we found our baby Roberto, he had all his vaccinations, he was in perfect condition, loved and even trained! We highly suggest to you to visit them or make a donation, they definitely know what they are doing. Thank you FFL.
A good place with a decent selection
Great shelter! They really help make sure you get a pet that is a good fit for you and the animal.
I found my forever furry daughter through them. Theyre an awesome shelter, the process is easy and a good fee that goes to doing so much. Dulce is great!
Always a wonderful place with lots of resources to help with lost and stray animals.
Great facility although the individual dog rooms seem small. They also work with other rescue groups, so if you have any donations please consider them. If they don’t need your items at that time they can find someone who does. Great work!
Found some kittens that somebody left abandon on the front door of the pharmacy I called and called and tried to find a place to take them these people help me out took the kittens got everything situated really fast the girls there were very pleasant and helpful
Update: To the response from Friends For Life; No I AM NOT MISTAKEN! If you bothered to read the review at all, we CALLED. There was no walk in or any physical or face to face interaction, it was all over the phone. We called to inquire about a mixed puppy they had up on their website. The lady was VERY rude and snapped at me multiple times on the phone. She told me that if I wanted to adopt a puppy that I needed to go online and fill out an application. I filled out an application THAT SAME DAY!! Its been over 2 weeks and not a single person has even attempted to get back in touch with me. Ive called a couple of times since then and got told very rudely, Youll hear something when you hear something! Came in once and got completely ignored!! I lost by furry best friend 2 years ago after 13 years of companionship, this wasnt a whim search or someone looking for a quick Christmas pet.Obviously if you dont have a Gucci, Michael Khors, or whatever designer bag brand and driving a Lexus, they dont want anything to do with you. Very sad since theyre supposed to be a RESCUE.
I had an amazing, easy and hassle-free experience fostering with them. They are great, helpful and responsive.
Weve had the chance to foster through Friends for Life and its been such a great experience. The staff is so kind, helpful, and organized. The shelter itself is clean and well kept. Ive truly never been more impressed with any animal shelter. These photos are of three of the pups weve fostered. Two of them are still up for adoption as of right now :)
FFL is not your typical rescue - they rescue animals that are more at risk of euthanasia which means they may need special care. They can also afford to keep an animal longer and if they feel the need to do so? That animal is still being cared for. They do not necessarily rescue these from the community, but from other high-risk shelters. They also have a food bank if you are on hard times and need help feeding your pet. They would rather your pet stay with you than take it like other shelters in our area.I found a sweet cat which was FELV+. I could not keep the cat for fear of my other cats becoming infected. If I brought this cat to a shelter they would send it to the county and have it euthanized, but I knew FFL had a special area just for these cats where they provide long term care. After contacting they told me I would have to foster until space was available in their FELV area (since their shelter isnt a tardis and FELV is contagious) - they hoped this would be 6-12 months. Luckily I do have a spare room in my home and decided to foster this kitty separately. He did pass away due to his illness before FFL could take him, but I was happy to make his short life a good one. Im okay that they couldnt take him right away since I dont know that living at their facility would have changed the outcome based on my vets observations.Luckily I realize Im not owed anything by this shelter or any other.
I adopted a dog from here just over a month ago and I couldnt more impressed. Before I even met a potential dog, I filled out the online application and was paired with the adoption coordinator, Stephanie. Stephanie is amazing! She talked me through the available dogs and which one would be the best fit for me and my lifestyle. A few days later I went in the the shelter to meet the dog and I instantly fell in love. But the amazingness doesnt stop here! Before adopting an animal, you do a sleepover. Basically you keep the animal for 1 week and at the end of the week, you make your final decision. Awesome idea!! Also, my dog had heartworms when I adopted her and they are doing all the treatments for free. I am consistently amazed with the care they have for the animals in their care and their support for you as the potential adopter. Highly recommend!!
EDIT: in reply to owner response: ok? And the employee should have taken the time to explain that to customers? I work in retail, the way she treated us was a huge no no. Came to get info about booking an appointment. The middle aged woman slammed the door in our face mid sentence while asking about the appointment because it was closer to closing time. Will be adopting elsewhere. Unprofessional & RUDE.
As far as 2021 a comment below about them helping out when you find abandoned kittens on the street IS NOT TRUE. I found 4 abandoned kittens in a parking lot a few days ago, I’m still trying to get some shelter to have them. This is one of the shelters that DID NOT HELP AT ALL. If anything, they send you to animal control, which kills animals if needing space.
Great service they really care about animals.Grateful 🙏
Absolutely wonderful organization - loving, caring staff and volunteers. Totally no-kill which is awesome!!!
KERI is example of a wow 🤩 moment experience. Especially these days! I’m so great full to her and FFL😜. Covid has really been hard for me Financially, job, finding help with animals!! I did give what I could! But things are looking better! So I will definitely be donating more money soon from Geneva my Feral cat. I have two Rescued cats! So knowing she has better chance at life makes my Heart feel good. KERI you are much appreciated for being so warm, and your amazing customer service.
They treat their pets very very well. I always recommend adopting or donating here because they are No-kill. But of course, pets at kill shelters need adopting too! Ive rescued and placed cats through freinds for life multiple times before. Most shelters, in my experiance, dont care at all. These people do.
Theyre kind of rude, but they did help me some pet food
Called to inquire about stray newborn kittens I found and spoke with a representative at the front desk who was extremely rude, told me they wouldnt take them, listed two other shelters and hung up on me as I was responding. Horrible service and clearly dont care about animals the way they should! Would never go here for adoption.P.S. Owner, please do not bother responding - based on your other low reviews, you take no accountability for your employees or service! Must have us confused - even more unprofessional than the woman I spoke with. Would never recommend to anyone. Wow
Based on the Experience my family and the people leaving honest reviews have had, and the obvious bots leaving 5 star reviews, im going to go out on a wim and say that this is some sort of front for some sort of money laundering or illegal business. You obviously arent making money from selling/adopting animals so how are you still in business?
Friends For Life is a GREAT place! The staff and volunteers are so nice and you could tell they are all extremely huge pet lovers who really care for every animal they work with! As a foster based adoption agency, they have pets on site and some at foster homes, but they provide books of all their animals so that you can set up a meet and greet with the pet of your dreams! They also have a 7 day sleep over period where you get a chance to connect with your new fur friend to make sure your newest baby will be a perfect family fit! After adoption, they are still very involved with helping you and your new buddy build the best connection possible. They have a pet behaviorist and certified top trainer available to answer questions at any time... even months or years after adoption is complete! We had a super awesome time through the whole process of our adoption of Spencer the Pup Formerly Know As Dudley, and still take him up there on Saturday mornings for their FREE Puppy Kindergarten training and socialization classes! Anyone interested in adopting a pet should definitely check this place out!
Wonderful people! Everyone should get behind FixHouston!
They will not allow you to adopt if you plan to let a cat be a cat and explore outside. You can only adopt if you intend to supress the cat of its natural instincts to go outside and chase mice and smell the fresh air. People that keep cats indoors I find abusive.
Donating to this place is easy and knowing it goes to a good cause that actually helps is great
This place is amazing,Took a baby kitten 😸🐾 that desperately needed help
The shelter will deny you before reading your application.
I took items for donation. They have a easy drive through system. The staff was very helpful and nice.
I will never be able to say enough wonderful things about this organization, the community they’ve built, or the difference they’ve fostered in our city. ❤️
U must make a appointment online before take your pet to them. Then you must wait til they contact you within 3 to 5 business days to see if your pet is eligible to be dropped off at the shelter
I dont agree with the 4.4 rating. Definitely a 5 star establishment. Super attentive staff, awesome front reception, and reservations always on time. Plus, cute animals cuter staff.
Love this animal shelter! They are a no-kill shelter that works hard to make sure pets and families are a good match. Would definitely recommend you consider them for pet adoption.
I finalized the adoption of 3month old kitten Noel just over a week ago. FFL made the process so easy. Because of Covid-19, it was for the most part, virtual But everyone I communicated with was professional, clear as to what the process was & what info was needed, helpful, quick to respond, friendly & obviously very careful & protective of the kitten in their care Thks FFL
My boyfriend submitted an application. According to them a dog cannot at any time be outside. Not even if supervised for short time. They only want people to adopt dogs/cats that are gonna be them 24/7 inside and lock up in 4 walls. I mean I understand small and puppies but when a dog grows up and if you have a doggie door for them to go outside and relieve or to get exercise even in your fenced backyard that is not acceptable by their standards. I just dont understand and they seemed very unprofessional and seem to twist your responses and just assumed that you are not fit. I guess after looking at other reviews here and in Yelp, if you want to get them to at least consider you a candidate for adopting. You must put dog will be inside the entire time. Do not put anywhere outdoor or outside on questionaire. We here being honest and we are not gonna lie. We would like our dog to get outside time to play. We had pets and love them, taken care of before and even adopted from Spca before. I just dont know what to think of this place. I feel like they judge people too quick and assume the worst too soon! I usually do not like writing negative reviews but I feel like I should so people who really love animals do not feel like they are alone if this happens to them at this place. Again, reading some of the negative reviews, I share similar experience with others. :(
Its a nice place to adopt and they help with food and anything thank yall so much for your help
Very nice and patient people. They are providing services for your pets at great deals. The best in town. Communication was excellent. Thanks for taking care of my 4 puppies, 2 dogs, and my moms dog. Attt
The people on the phone was very rude. I dont like rude people. I called to see how much you all charged to get my puppy fixed. The lady on the phone yet putting me on hold for 15 mins. Then she would come back on the phone. Told she didnt have to answer me. Then hung up on me. Really. I dont plan to take my puppy to you all. I called like for a week. The same lady did this to me every time I would call.
I use to volunteer here and all they did is have me do laundry which I mean I don’t mind . But one of the managers I believe, I didn’t know exactly who she was, she was rude towards me for no reason. That’s one of the reason I stopped volunteering at this place.
This is a TOP notch orgainazation! Donate to them if you can. They do so much for animals and their humans.
Eve answered all of my questions and made sure we were 100% comfortable!
Applied to adopt a dog. They dont respond as to your application. They want medical records of any animal you have had ever. They are unprofessional and leave unintelligible voicemails. The adoption questions are the same exact questions you respond to in the adoption questionnaire. How they find homes for any dog is beyond me. Anyone who donates to this shetler or god forbid leaves an animal here is truly being cruel to animals.
Mostly cats at the time I was looking. Maybe lateral they will have more dogs.
I cant speak more highly about Friends For Life. Me and my husband adopted a beautiful puppy. She has enriched our lives in so many ways and were so grateful to her foster and rescuers at Friends For Life. This is an amazingly run facility with people who truly care about these animals. I am especially touched by my interactions with the pet behaviorists and trainers at the Puppy Kindergarten on Saturdays (which helps so much with teaching our new fur baby). I am very thankful for the extensive vetting process to adopt these animals to keep them from becoming strays again. The volunteers at Friends For Life see animals who have been dramatically affected by disease, abuse, and abandonment. Any complaints about their adoption process is, in my eyes, completely unjustified. They are looking for adopters who put the time in to research and give proper care to their animals, because after are... they are our friends for life. Thank you so much for bringing this little angel into our lives. We are forever grateful for your help and fantastic facilities. If you want a pet, please consider adopting! And it doesnt have to just be young kittens and puppies, there are plenty of fantastic adult and elderly dogs and cats that are waiting to find their best friend... and that friend could be you!
The only no kill shelter in houston deserves more than 5 stars
I brought my 3 cats to the free weekend drive for vaccinations, pet food, preventatives, and general wellness checkups. All of the workers were kind and informative (I spoke with Jennifer amd Diane), and Im so thankful for the free vet assistance that Friends For Life provided. Thank you again to the workers for enduring the heat and taking the time for our pets in need. Thank you!
Staff were very friendly and practiced all the safe protocols for social distancing. Sounds crazy but I love the fact that they actually cared about the neighbors and there properties. They were very cautious with my pup being they had a highly contagious dog they were working with. Highly recommend.
Like everybody right now were all having financial difficulty I needed some help with dog food these people jump Right in and took care of it.
I tried volunteering here and they said I had to apply online Im like Im not trying to get a job, just trying to cheer up some lonely cats. Too bad.
Maybe i will be adopting a dog from here. Doing a meet and greet tomorrow. So far, the facility is clean. Dogs are kept in foster homes. They ck you out very well. I like that. Not anyone can just walk in pick and leave with a dog, with them not knowing if it will be treated right or not. Will update my review after tomorrow.
These guys are great. Weve adopted 2 kitties from them and just recently became fosters for them. Great organization!
Was able to recieve free dog food for my pups. They allow you to get donations every 4months If needed. Very nice place when its open inside for now theyre doing curbside and the process is super fast and easy.
Great place to adopt a pet in need of a home.
This place was amazing with my fur babies. They were super nice and gentle with them 💕
I waited for a waited for a response but never received one...Its too late now
No kill animal shelter, whats not to love.Great staff. Interview process to properly screen and match animals to their new families. Animals are fostered outside the facility so check their website for hours of operation. All furry babies are well cared for, healthy and up to date with vaccinations. If youre up for the responsibility, support this organization, adopt here, and find your friend for life❤️
Unresponsive. This place makes it impossible to adopt an animal
They take great care of the animals and make sure they are matched with great people. This is a great place to support. We adopted two awesome kittens about a year ago, and Friends 4 Life has been so wonderful through the whole process. 💕🐾
After seeing a picture of a cat that I fell in love with, I immediately and excitedly went to apply. The next day, I received an email with a blunt rejection stating that as I selected indoor/outdoor on the application I was being ruled out. At that point, I was heartbroken but still optimistic as I had misunderstood the application (I assumed with a leash and harness or in a gated small backyard my cat could enjoy the outdoors, I also assumed that they HAD cats that were allowed to be outside, based on the way the application is set up). I then proceeded to call the Adoption Coordinator (sent an email and left a voicemail) with no response. Finding that odd, I then contacted the shelter itself and asked to be transferred to the Adoption Manager. This conversation was less than pleasant, un-constructive, disingenuous, and quite frankly disheartening. I then asked to be called by the Operation Manager where finally I had a more transparent and logic driven conversation. My advice to those adopting: the application is more of a quiz and if you do not pass with the perfect, spot on, or exact answers you will be restricted permanently from the shelter and never allowed to apply again. With NO second chances, no education, nor reform. What the shelter fails to accomplish is transparency, open and honest communication, and understanding that potential adoptees only want whats best for the animals as well.Ive had an an off-putting, cold, and rigid experience but I am glad they were open to at least listening to my feedback (though after some resistance).
Caring and efficient staff, always willing to help with whatever hurdle comes up. Ive loved my time being a cat foster!
Amazing non profit service. A gem in our community
Friends For Life is hands down THE gold standard for rescues. Their no kill model is what all others should strive for and their team of staff and volunteers is second to none. Ive been involved with the rescue as a donor and sometimes dog foster and have loved every bit of it. ❤️Adopt dont shop
Delicious tacos and great service, especially one of the waiters named Jessie 😎 Thanks
Im so grateful that a place like this exists in town. Awesome mission that they operate under. I would encourage anyone to give in any way you can... Foster, volunteer time, donate in kind, spread the word, or anything to support this much needed haven
Nice people. Generous.
Best cat and dog shelter in Houston! This is a No-Kill shelter that is very interactive and caring of all the animals. They always ensure the adoption is a good match for the animal and the human. They also support fostering. A must see for the animal companion you are missing in your life.
Wonderful organization. A no-kill shelter that offers fostering and adoptions. The people here are very nice and so caring
I got my Rusty from them 3 years ago and volunteered as well. Wasn’t able to volunteer for very long, but I’m going to again now if their COVID policy allows. And I swore I was only going to have ONE cat, but I’m going to find him a little female buddy since I think he’s really bored. Yep, I’m giving in. 💞 But I wouldn’t go anywhere but Friends for Life!
Great people, cause, facility, cant say enough. They helped me with low cost services at their clinic for a stray dog I took in and then turned me on to several reputable rescue resources. You know these people are serious about helping our furry friends and I SO appreciate it!
I have been volunteering here for a few months now and I must say I am thoroughly impressed. It is a no kill shelter that has been around for a while. The staff and other volunteers are helpful and approachable. They are through about screening individuals before allowing any adoption to ensure that the animal is well cared for. They take good care of the animals they bring in and have a systematic flow of animals into foster care and back onto the premises. They train their volunteers well. They also spearheaded all the animal care at the George R Brown shelter during hurricane Harvey.
You all are the best! So great with my sensitive dog.
Very helpful to meGave me cat food litters and pet beds This was my second time to come.I was told unless I bring spay or neuter papers I could not receive help any more.My husband doesnt believe in it ..and I also rehome alot of them ..so its also a no kill shelter...they offer pet adoption and foster
