It takes a lot to get me voluntarily out of bed to train at 5:30am, but Instructor Derry makes this happen. Combining great strength training with BJJ technique (and of course time to roll) this class is always worth waking up for. The Downtown Club allows two hours of free parking and is a well-equipped facility with everything I need to get ready for work, making it a convenient place to train with a busy schedule. I highly recommend training here.

The best place to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the downtown area! Derry is an excellent teacher and tailors classes to each students specific needs and desired intensity levels. The knowledge being transferred and the training being provided is top-notch. The early class is a perfect opportunity to get your body ready for the day. After a nice workout and several rolls, everything else throughout the rest of the day just doesnt seem so bad. If you cant make it to the early class, try out the lunch class too - its a great chance to take a break and recharge! The facilities are nice and always clean, Ive never had a problem finding parking and everyone is always friendly. This kind of fantastic experience is one that words cant quite fully capture... give it a try, you wont regret it!

Derry Samuel under the direction of Professor Marcos Cerqueira is an amazing teacher. It doesnt matter if its your first day or you have been training for years, Derry provides excellent one on one attention. Training with this group is one of the few places you can train high level martial arts and not feel intimidated when you walk in.

I wasnt sure if I was going to be able to fit Jiu Jiutsu before a full day of work, followed by a full term of school thru-out the week. However, Ive come to realize that taking the time to work with Derry and the other folks; has put to rest my anxieties. Their culture of respect, safety and encouragement got me to give Jiu Jitsu a try for myself. But its their lead-by-example training methods, focus on personal development and a commitment to give their absolute best, is why, dear reader, I invite you to attend a class and see for yourself.

I recently got a job downtown and have moved my full-time BJJ training location from Brazil-021 in Bellaire to the Downtown Club at the Met with Instructor Derry Samuel. It is a different location and instructor but Derry as well as Instructor Danny Kou are continuing the same amazing culture for BJJ training that Prof. Marcos Cerqueira has built at Brazil-021 Houston. Derry and Danny have the same unrelenting commitment to teaching BJJ the right way that focuses on physical fitness and technical skill development while maintaining the utmost respect for your training partners. Derry has attracted a core group with a great camaraderie in the mornings at the Downtown Club. The classes are perfect for anyone thinking of starting the gentle art all the way to serious BJJ fighters. Danny is doing the same with his evening classes. The facilities are spacious, clean and in an ideal location. Instructor Derry and Danny at Brazil-021 Downtown come highly recommended!

I been training BJJ at the Downtown Club since we started in January 2015. Before January I was only training at our Bellaire location. Instructor Derry has help me improve my game in BJJ greatly. Instructor Derry understands the moves and walks you through the moves with precision and detail. Thanks to Professor Marcos because Instructor Derry has a strong knowledge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and its a strong reflection of what Professor Marcos teaches at the Bellaire school. With the help of Professor Marcos and Instructor Derry, I was able to achieve the gold medal in the IBJJF Austin International Open. Instructor Derry was calling the moves to me from the sidelines because he understood my game through all the training at the Downtown Club. If you work downtown and want to learn BJJ this is the location for you. You will receive a wonderful experience and learn a great amount of skill from Instructor Derry. If you want to learn BJJ, learn it from the Best School in town, Brazil-021 School of Jiu-Jitsu, and come try it out downtown. I hope to see you on the mats. Oss!

I began training BJJ with Brazil-021 about three months ago. Ill post my review of the Bellaire location in that particular Google+ page. The downtown facility is beautiful. The Met is a large athletic club, and Brazil-021 uses one of the racquetball courts for their training. Large mats cover all the court except where the student first walks in. Be sure to wear your sandles until you step on the mat!Derry Samuel is usually the instructor in the mornings. As of this writing, he is a purple belt and has a significant amount of experience instructing, as is clear by his teaching style. If youre new, dont be afraid to drop in on the morning classes. Derry explains new movements to students in a very clear and concise manner, and will physically move with you until you get the movement. Another aspect of his teaching that I enjoy is that he immediately shows why a particular movement is incorrect or inefficient by countering it with something that youve learned in the past, or will learn in the near future. Hes also extremely patient with new students. For experienced students, he has no lack of knowledge. While I cant comment directly on the experience of these students, the blue belts and other purple belts seem to enjoy rolling with him, and Ive seen him actively teach them during rolling sessions as well, which is not something that all experienced practitioners will do (unless directly asked). From my perspective, most of the time during live training, he trains to my level, or my level plus one, which is greatly appreciated. No one enjoys getting pounded into the ground constantly during live training, but Derry will still test your training with what is expected of you, plus maybe a little extra to make you grow as a practitioner.Last week, Marcos (Brazil-021 Houstons head instructor) started an evening class on Tuesday/Thursday at 6 PM with purple belt Danny Kou as the instructor to benefit those who work downtown and have a difficult time getting to the Bellaire location due to rush hour traffic. A quick Google search will show Dannys competition record, so I really dont need to talk about that. As someone who was started with Danny as their instructor for the first few days, and often as a rolling partner, I would try to argue that hes as good of an instructor as he is a competitor. Exceptionally patient and with a constant positive outlook, his instruction mirrors Marcos style, and as his competition success is due to (as close as possible) technical perfection, he is an amazing teacher on the technical aspects of grappling. Im planning on driving from my apartment in Montrose to the downtown location for this class, then back to Bellaire (across town) for the advanced classes, just to receive training from Danny!

I have been training with Brazil 021 Houston for 6 years under Professor Marcos Cerqueira at the Bellaire location, but took a year layoff for my new born baby girl. I recently came back to training again with this family oriented team. This location at the Met is new and definitely a gym to check out! This place has everything you need! They provide you with 2 hour free parking in a covered garage, clean showers with towels, weights, and the instructors teaching brazilian jiu-jitsu are superb and detailed! The classes I attend is taught by coach Derry during lunch time and coach Danny in the evening time who are both IBJJF Champions. If you are in the midtown/downtown area. This is a must try for a great work out and learning self defense at the same time! See you on the mats! This place is legit!

Instructor Derry provides a fun yet challenging environment for learning Jiu-Jitsu. Classes normally include a mixture of people from all levels of Jiu-Jitsu who are eager to help one another improve their skills. Instructor Derry provides excellent instruction to the entire group but also takes the time to give one on one pointers when needed. Learning the art of Jiu-Jitsu is not only rewarding but is also one of the best all around forms of exercise I have tried. I would recommend Brazil-021 to anyone looking to learn a martial art, improve their current skill set, or improve their physical conditioning.
