I was online searching for somewhere to get one of my sons dreads retwist and the other two haircuts for back to school. We live in Portsmouth and I want to Hampton to the shop and lets say I was very impressed.Very professional and friendly they made the boys and I feel very comfortable and we would definitely be coming back to Hampton for now on!!!

I seen 1029 Barbershop on Facebook advertisement. Now this is not my normal barbershop but my normal barber was out of town, so I gave them a try.As I was walking up to the shop, I notice a barber was outside taking a break. I told him I was there for a cut, so he lead me inside to the first chair by the window - warning #1. Lots of chairs being attended by male and female barbers, as a matter of fact the owner is female. So the place is very diverse. Now there are equal amount of barbers on each side of the shop with a long bench separating each side. Luckily I didnt have to wait cause waiting on that hard bench, with no back support would have been weird. would have been weird. I mean setting there, in the middle of the shop, not knowing anyone and all eyes on ya.The second warning #2 I notice was none of the barbers was wearing a mask, social distancing was out the window and they didnt have a limit on how many guests in the shop. This was a major red flag for me and I should have left, but I didnt so I guess that makes me just as much part of that problem as they are.History shows that the novice barber is in the first chair near the door. Now thats not in all shops because the owner of this shop was in the other chair closest to the door and she seems to be pretty good. However my experience shows that. So that was another warning #3, I had a rookie barber.So I like to get to know my barbers so I engaged in small talk with him. He told me about the shop, how long theyve been in business, how long hes been there (3 weeks) and that the owner was female.Speaking of females, my barber had some comment to say about every female that walked by outside the window. Like how fine she looked in jeans to other comments that I didnt wanna hear. He even went as far to tell me about a woman who offered him a sexual proposal because the haircut she received was so good. Course I didnt believe him based on the haircut I received from him ( more about that later). I just stop talking to him all alone.Now if you think the benches were uncomfortable, the barber chairs were no better. The back would not go straight up and there was no real seat cushion at all. It was a tight fit, not like your typical barber chair that had plenty of room around the hip area. No, this chair was a tight fit, so tight that I was getting claustrophobic. I could not wait for this haircut to be over cause I was ready to get out of that chair. A barbershop should be a place of comfort, were people can hang out during a haircut and chat it up in comfort; thats not the case here.Now for the haircut! As I said, the chair was very uncomfortable, so I was ready to get out of it. Unfortunately, my barber was really taking his time with the cut. Now Im not knocking him for that at all, its just the uncomfort of the chair made it hard to sit steal. I told the barber that I wanted a short on top, medium bald fade with a go-tee trim. He said I got cha and proceeded with my cut. Like I said he took his time. I notice the cut in mirror from time-to-time as he rotated me in the chair - I was not impressed with what I was seeing.Finally the he was done with the cut, handed me a mirror for me to examine it. The top was too high, my mustache was kinda bushy and overall it just was not a clean, sharp cut. Im sure he could have hooked me up it I had asked but I just wanted to get out of that chair.I do like the fact that this place accepts Visa, Master Card etc... I also notice that they speak to everyone that comes in the door, sorta like they to when you are at Moes Southwest Grill. They need a bigger place. Though I respect the fact that the owner hires a lot of barbers, but the place is crowed. Id hate to be in there on the weekend when its busy.Well, thats it. Will I be back? I doubt it. Like I said I have my own barber who just knows how to cut my hair right. 1029 Barbershop needs to do some upgrades in my opinion however other than my barber, I think the others do a fairly good job.

I’m from Jamaica( land of dreadlock and Rasta), living in New York and I’m telling you I’m skeptic about people doing my hair but Nene Payton is exceptional..... I willBe traveling from New York to do my hair every month just to feel as confident and look this good. Thank you much for doing my hair nene! All the barbers and stylists do great work. Used to take my boys for the fresh cuts and daughter for cornrows. They have great hours and are open when many other shops are closed. They can be super busy

I cannot say enough about my experience with NeNe she went out of her to make sure I was happy with my instant locs/loc extensions. My hair natural hair wasnt long enough for me to put it up.NeNe called on her tribe/Fam Fam and they came thru!!! The extensions are human hair and they are hand made. While Ne Ne was working on my hair her fam was making the loc extensions I am truly appreciative and grateful for all the hard work and effort everyone put in.

Each time I step in this place I am always greeted with warm smiles and friendly faces. The barbers are top notch. I highly recommend!

IV is the best. All of the staff there are talented and friendly.

The staff was super knowledgeable and amazing. They cut my toddler boys hair and he barely flinched. The place also had a good ambiance. I would totally recommend this barbershop.

Had a HORRIBLE experience yesterday. I asked the barber to just clean me up. This was my second visit here, same barber within the last 2 weeks. This visit on yesterday, Thomas is his name, the first chair on the left. He jacke my hair up. I will never step foot in this place again. It came highly recommended. I am not putting the establishment down but the barber. I have a barber in Williamsburg who usually does my hair but i relocated from there to Newport News and did not want to travel anymore. Well i guess that was a mistake. I am HORRIFIED what this barber Thomas did to my hair. He did what he wanted. Ignored what i asked. I am so mad. I literally cried in my car. Again, I am not putting down the establishment but the barber is HORRIBLE.

I always get my haircuts from there and its a positive vibe all around and great for little one because u can learn something new everyday.

Every time I have been. I leave with a great haircut. Everyone is nice and friendly. I wont go anywhere else to get my haircut or my beard trimmed.

Look good at first until you need maintenance. This is the scam they make the money then don’t answer calls. Too busy to attend to repeat customers. I will be uploading photos on Facebook instagram and YouTube. Since she wanna play unfair I will expose operation. Don’t go here or u will be disappointed in long run. Extension start looking super crazy just like on YouTube thinning out from real hair. I will keep u all posted about this place. You can’t see the imperfections until few months out. Ijs

My husband has been going to Wally since forever. We recently started taking our son here, and Ivy usually cuts his hair. Although Ive never met her, she knew what I would and wouldnt like. My son actually sits for her and lets her cut his hair and shape him up. He always comes home to tell me about his haircut. I know if I go, he might act up so Im glad I can trust her to do her thing.

Great atmosphere with the kinds of entertaining convos about sports, music, local gossip, and current events that you would find in the African Americans country club that is: the Barber shop! I would highly recommend Nene Payton Cutz for yourself, or even bring the kids. I brought a family member to get a low cut Ceaser. Dre did an Outstanding job on my sons hair, and I plan to make this our permanent spot for cuts from now on!
