I know how hard it is to find a trustworthy and “Good Mechanic”. So I was very happy when I found this place through a friend. Once I met with Jeff a few times to get my dads car fixed I knew I might have found a spot I was going to take all my cars. Note: if you are looking for a place with a fancy waiting room, receptionist, coffee, and inflated prices this is not your spot. Jeff is a no BS mechanic/owner who will find you the best price on parts and won’t do unnecessary thing to jack up your price.In fact, I once received a total from Jeff for fixing my dad’s car’s O2 sensors which was very reasonable and we had already agreed on it. To my surprise a few hours later Jeff actually called me back to tell me that he had found the sensors even cheaper and gave me the new cheaper price! Good luck getting that at a dealership. This is what being honest and faithful to your customers looks like. I appreciate Jeff and all the work he has done for us. Highly Recommend Mechanic!!. Absolutely awesome place!! Took my truck in a few days ago having no idea what was wrong. They could of racked up an enormous bill but an hour after dropping it off they called and told me it was done. No parts were needed which they could of charged anything and I wouldn’t of known. They didn’t!!! Charged labor only and also fixed a few other minor issues for no charge. I definitely recommend anybody who needs repairs to come here. Down to earth people and great fast service. Honest and fair. I’ll be continuing to listen for people who need work so I can recommend these guys!

Awesome service! Dropped my truck off to get a quote on the AC getting repaired. They found the problem and had the part at the shop almost immediately! Didnt charge for the diagnostic. Ordered the parts and Had me back on the road within hours. Great pricing. Easy to work with. Great customer service. Highly recommended and will definitely be using them again.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDEDTook my car in today and Jeff was super helpful, right away Jeff took a look into my car even though he was busy at the time, Jeff told me it was a simple radiator cap change, but when I took it to other mechanics before hand they told me otherwise they said I would need to change parts that would have cost me a couple thousand dollars. Jeff took one look at it and immediately told me how to fix my issues free of charge. Jeff is a very honest and professional mechanic, you will not regret coming here people!

My sister bought her first car and we needed to get it checked out and an oil change. Jeff was really nice, showed her where all her fluids were located and how to check them on her own, he also checked the entire car to make sure we made a good purchase and would be safe with her 1999 Toyota Corolla. Oil change was a little pricey for a 1999 in my opinion however the service made up for the price. I would recommend Jeff to someone who is looking for an honest guy who won’t bs you! Took my Chrysler 300 to the dealer to have some recalls done. When i go and pick it up they tell me i have a oil Cooler leak. Which Jeff and his guys fixed for me last year. Dealer was looking to charger me $980.00 dollars to fix. I took it back to Jeff and it ended up being a lose oil filter cap that i under tightened. And tightened it up no charge. That right there ladies and gentlemen is what you call a true HONEST Mechanic. I think Jeff Should change the name of his business to A Good HONEST Mechanic. Thanks Jeff !!!!!

The owner, Jeff is very knowledgeable about auto repair. Unfortunately, his staff is quite the opposite. After my satisfactory first visit, I brought my truck in for a different issue. A new mechanic was hired, and he ruined my vehicle, after paying more than $1600 in repair work! My vehicle had to be towed, because of loose nuts and bolts that resulted in permanent damage. The truck was junked, worthless.I do NOT recommend “A Good Mechanic” anymore!

Extremely annoying experience.Brought my 2012 Cruze in for a oil leak. Leak gets “fixed” so I pick up my car, while driving home engine light comes on. Pop my hood to find coolant(not oil) is NOW leaking! And my auto start is no longer working. Bring car back in. They broke something while fixing the oil leak which caused the coolant to leak. Go back to pick up my “fixed” car. The next day I find a huge puddle of OIL in my driveway. Take the car back in and they forgot to put back an item while fixing my coolant leak which caused the oil to leak.You can’t make this up!Engine light is still on and I have no auto start. I have given up on “A good mechanic”

I took my car to A Good Mechanic this week because it was shaking a little bit when driving on the freeway.Jeff did a thorough inspection, and quickly pinpointed the cause. The work we needed done (a wheel balance) isnt something that they do at A Good mechanic, but Jeff still helped me get the repairs done with another shop. He communicated clearly with me at each step, and I feel confident that he will take care of my car well throughout any and all future repairs.

We have been seeing Jeff since we moved to Grayslake two years ago. Quickly we realized how honest and straight-to-the-point he was. Recently, my Hyundai Accents engine (2016 mind you) failed and I was infuriated. I didnt know what to do, this repair would wipe out our savings. Jeff worked with us tirelessly to not only diagnose the car but educate us on how to work with the dealership for best results. He walked us through every step of the way, giving us his time free of charge. Jeff is responsible for the new engine the dealership has given us, as he has advocated for us from the start about how it was a manufactures error. Not only does Jeff provide quality work, but he provides HONEST work. Once, when my husband had his engine replaced, he asked Jeff if there was anything else that needed to be done. Jeff said No, Id be willing to drive that car to California tomorrow rather than trying to sell us unnecessary repairs that could have been done. It is rare in the service profession for there to be such honesty and to not take advantage of a customer. In effect, it was a test from my husband, and Jeff passed with flying colors.Jeff comes in on days off to do work if you need it. He has a trusted circle of contacts that he uses because he trusts them and would never point us to another business that would steer us wrong. I found this shop via a search on google maps. I wish I would have found Jeff 3 years ago! Jeff is honest, passionate, and beyond trustworthy. I never take my cars to dealers or shops and do 99% of the repairs myself but I got into a bind and needed my AC system evacuated and recharged. Jeff fit me in the same day and did an amazing job. He went above and beyond and gave me 1000xs better service than I have ever had at any shop. Jeffs prices are more than fair but more importantly he will not try to screw you or sell you things you dont need. Jeff is a self-made, honest guy.Who would you rather get service from? The corporate dealers who only care about selling you everything they can (i.e. oh I see you need new wiper blades. We can do that for you for $800) or Jeff, the hardworking honest local mechanic? Jeff, owner and mechanic at A Good Mechanic in Grayslake, IL, is a very trustworthy person. He saved us alot of money over the car dealerships quotes for repairs to our van. He is the most honest mechanic Ive ever met. He takes his time to talk with you, diagnose your problem and come up with how to fix your vehicle. I used to be a person who would go to the car dealership but not anymore, Jeff is my go to person for my car repairs and oil changes. He also says he can do warranty work and really goes out of his way to help a person. I highly recommend him.

My exhaust pipe came undone from the muffler recently so I took it to a shop in Round Lake and they gave me an $862 estimate for repair! This included $250 for a resonator and $465 for the muffler itself. I was skeptical about this quote so I took it to A Good Mechanic and Jeff was able to save me a whole lotta money...because he correctly diagnosed that I did NOT need the muffler replaced AT ALL!!! They simply welded the pipe back on to the muffler and BAM!!! Fixed for $100.If you live within 25 miles of Grayslake and need your car fixed...take it to A Good Mechanic. Dont even bother going anywhere else.

When I get my car serviced there are some important factors. Cost, Honesty and Quality of work. JD Powers awards mean nothing. I learned years ago a car dealer will be dishonest if you have money and they need to book hours. After being cheated at two different car dealer service departments, I turned to private mechanics. I have had a private mechanic for several years now, (the only way to go). My last mechanic passed away and I went looking for another.Jeff will help me troubleshoot over the phone, resolve issues as cost effectively as possible and perform a quality, timely repair. I have now dealt with Jeff for 3 vechile problems. A fuel pump replacement, a transmission problem and a broken window. The fuel pump was replaced for well under half what a dealer would have charged. The transmission problem turned out to be a failsafe mechanism which Jeff successfully diagnosed over the phone and saved me thousands of dollars. Jeff was able to contact his glass person and give me a cost to repair a broken window that was about 1/3 the cost of any other place, installing the window in under 2 hours. Whats more, is I dropped off my car for a $105 window replacement and he drove me home.Its clear, A Good Mechanic, is just that. Jeff and his team are cost effective and provide quality work. No problem is too small or big for this team.

Dishonest and sloppy work with collateral damage to other parts. Over a period of 2 years Jeff or his helper did extensive amounts of work on our 2000 Cherokee and 03 Hyandai SonataThey charged the dealer rate of $90 for our extended warranty services. The work was always poor requiring repeat visits to fix some of the most outrageous things.Sonata steering pump: Leaky fittings on hose repair and wrong fluid installed. He had to flush the system and get the right fluid. later that year the pump failed and the seals on the steering rack failed.Sonata brake job: Used non oem parts and the front brakes lasted only 6k miles. The job requires ceramic pads. terrible knowledge on hyandai vehicle.He lost the wheel lock wrench and we had to go buy a new lug nut set for $67 out my pocket.Sonata battery: I had to go and do the parts run myself to get the right battery.Sonata tuneup: Used cheap non oem coils that failed quickly over winter from condensation inside boots. One of the coils actually made an arc weld burn along the valve cover. He broke the screw mount on the engine cover during this job.Jeep work:Steering leak: replaced steering wheel upside down (air bag aimed at my junk!) and ruined the seals in the steering box on return. Required new box done by Meineke. $500Radiator replacement. They actually cut the bottom of the fan shroud off to get around the fan blade! broke off the hood release handle, cracked the blade on the electric fan. They refused to honor the repair request on this incompetent work.AC leak. Replaced the condenser and pump. The pump failed this week and wouldnt you know it the pump was dry with no oil and the system still had dye in it demonstrating that it was not flushed before being recharged. sloppy and careless!I cannot say enough how disappointed we are over all these broken things that have cost me so much money on a fixed income. Jeffs most frequent excuse for these things was to blame whichever guy he hired off the street to play mechanic on our cars. Jeff was a friend that I trusted to care for my jeep and sonata like it was his own. He has failed as the Good Mechanic he claims to be with these stupid mistakes and incidental damages. I should have held him accountable but he was supposed to be a friend and always said he would fix it one the next service call. Now he wont honor his mistakes.Dont walk, RUN from this business.
