My boyfriend had a haircut with Cari and it unfortunately did not meet our expectations. He did originally schedule with Andi as we liked her work, but it was changed to Cari at the last minute and he didn’t have time to cancel.I will say he did go in with relatively long hair, but wanted to cut it short like the picture. He came home after paying $65 + tip with this haircut. I understand an additional fee for longer hair, but to almost double the price for a subpar haircut seems unreasonable. As you can see in the first picture, he wanted a fade into longer on the top, but instead he got a practically hard uneven line.In addition, he went in a little nervous as he hasn’t cut his hair in 2 years and neither the atmosphere or Cari put him at ease.I really don’t like complaining about service work as I highly respect and give the benefit of the doubt to people in the service industry, and I wouldn’t have minded if it was $65 if the haircut had been what he’d asked for, but it just wasn’t. I ended up trying to clean it up and actually create a fade with his clippers and thankfully we could fix it to some degree, but we are really disappointed with the original outcome.

I went here Wednesday with Carli as my stylist. After the shampooing, facial hot towel w/essential oils, and neck massage, I was dead. $35 man pampering at its finest.

Cari S. Did a wonderful job cutting my hair. It has been months since I’ve been happy with my haircut from going to the less inexpensive places. I think it was definitely worth the price for sure! I told her what I wanted and she did a bomb.com job at listening and doing exactly what I wanted! I’ll definitely be back in her chair!

Prior to Jairleen launching her own establishment, myself and my two boys had followed her, as she made employment changes throughout Grand Rapids, over a 13 year span. After moving to Grand Haven, we now make the drive due to her excellent execution and consistency. A bad haircut or lesser experience isn’t worth finding somewhere closer or cheaper. Shop is clean, has a cool atmosphere, and close to other fun stops in GR. This place will continue to thrive.

My visit to the 1890 Mens Grooming Parlor was amazing! While the place oozes with old world charm, their state of the art services are absolutely wonderful. A shout out to Stephanie (facial) and to Jeff (deep-tissue massage) for making me feel like a million!

I had a appointment with Ashley S. Asked for a high skin fade with a comb over and a simple hard part. There’s no way around this, the haircut was just not good. The service was nice and the parlor was clean. The staff were friendly but unfortunately the haircut just wasn’t up to par. The fade had a extremely hard line and it seemed to arch along side my head. Would definitely not recommend this for 35 dollars. If this was a simple 10-15 dollar walk in hair cut I would be a little more lenient but being 35 dollars and having to schedule your appointments I would expect more from a establishment.

Absolutely awesome atmosphere. Everyone was cheerful and welcoming and the beard trim was on point! Blake Ann did an incredible job cleaning up the hack job I did on my beard! And Jeff was phenomenal with the shoulder, neck deep tissue massage! I have a hard time finding someone to get the knots out of my trunk of a neck and Jeff’s hands worked wonders, and was cheerful the whole time. I’ll definitely be returning!

Hands down best cut I have found in town & this local barbershop does it all. Jairleen does a fantastic job- no matter the time of day or level of traffic, she will take the necessary time to ensure you are taken care of, never rushing and never cutting corners to speed things up. The staff gets to know their customers & always is keen on the details. The place is always sparkling clean, the staff manages their appointments on time, and the energy and conversation is always a bonus too. Wouldn’t recommend for the cost. $35+ with tip for a haircut. Scheduled appointment for 11am. Didn’t start cutting hair until after 11:10. Poor quality line up on my side profile. Actually pushed my hairline up a good 3/4inch on my left side and 1/2 inch on the right side so it looks uneven. Rest of the haircut looks fine.

Had a haircut last week here with jarileen. It was a great experience! I have struggled to find a place that cuts my hair like I want it, and she did an excellent job despite my struggle to explain exactly what I wanted. As long as I am in Grand Rapids I will be coming back!

I had a deep tissue massage by Jeff, who works there now one day a week. Let me tell you, if you have any hesitation, for what ever reason for getting a massage, let it go! Hes been doing this for years and his knowledge and experience will make you feel like a whole different person. Treat yourself and your body will thank you for it. Its clean and professional and this world is too short and too stressful not to get a massage. Im serious when I say, Jeff will help you to feel great and its so good for you!! I guarantee, youll book another one after experiencing the change in how you feel! I loved it and I cant wait to go back again.

Just had a deep tissue massage for the first time and let me tell you, Jeff is amazing. His skill is top notch and I would not hesitate recommending him to anyone. I am new to the Grand Rapids area and am so glad to have found 1890, more importantly that I got Andi as my stylist. Let’s start with the professionalism of the staff and the impeccable appearance of the shop with its great looking barcelona chairs in the wait room, and the chance to have your shoes shined if needed. The barbershop is warm and inviting. Let’s move on to the quality of the staff. I’m sure all of the stylists are amazing but I was lucky to have been paired up with Andi. I kinda just throw a dart in the dark for an online appt based on my time slot. I couldn’t be happier, her professionalism and quality of my haircut was amazing. She takes her time and you never feel rushed. Her personality and attitude is so upbeat and laid back that you leave there a better person than when you arrived. My wife said its her new favorite cut for me, and that it looks like detail was taken into care. My husband tried this place, and its awesome! His haircut is great, and he liked the little extras that were complimentary, like the hot scented (lavender and sandlewood, I think) towel on his face, and the way owner/stylist Jairleen went to the extra effort of giving him a second haircut after the shampoo. He also appreciated the back of the neck massage and shave. Tasteful, simple decor, a combination of modern and turn of the century, make this shop a very welcoming, relaxing place to get a haircut at a reasonable price. My husband will definitely be a return customer.

Gents, never let a good suit be ruined by a bad pair of shoes. I cant recommend the shoe shine services enough. Evan from Harleys Shoeshine is top notch. Ive been getting my hair cut by Jairleen at 1890 for almost 3 year now and I will never go to anyone else. In the past, Ive always been very particular about who cuts my hair and the consistency of the hair cut. I used to go to some of the bigger, franchised-based hair cutting businesses around town, and the quality of the haircut would vary from one week to the next. With Jairleen and 1890, I never have to worry about that. They treat every customer and cut as if its their own family and the level of talent is unmatched. I typically get my beard trimmed and shaped as well, and Jairleen is an absolute pro at that. Ive received numerous compliments about the shaping of my facial hair and its all because of her. I dont leave many reviews on Google, but I would be doing a disservice if I didnt for 1890. I cannot recommend them enough to anyone that is looking for a haircut you cant count on.

Place has a great atmosphere with some pretty good tunes playing in the background, not to mention it was CLEAN. The haircut and beard trim turned out great; really took her time on both to ensure they turned out great.
