My beloved noodles was bit by a water moccasin. And the staff was at the door waiting for me. They took her right back. They kept me informed of her throughout the day. Unfortunately she didn’t make it because her little old body couldn’t take it. And we had to put her to sleep 😭😭but they were so caring and compassionate and made it a little easier during her passing. I will forever be grateful for the love and care they gave her during her last few days of life.

We lost our beloved fur-baby and the staff at BluePearl was amazing. Our fur-baby was my daughters emotional support and she was very emotional upon his death. The staff was very attentive to not only our fur-baby but my daughter as well. James, Shane, Rachel, Lizzie and the rest of the technicians was very empathetic, gave us good resources, showed how much they cared and took care of our baby. Thank you so much BluePearl staff you meant the world to us when we need you.

My puppy went through an incident that resulted in his leg to be broken. I went to my local vet office and they immediately sent us to BluePearl. We got there and had my puppy checked in. Within a few mins we got a phone call with what needed to happen. Everything was going great until they told me it would be 3-5 thousand dollars, not including a 660 dollar over night stay for my puppy, for his surgery. We expressed how much he meant to us and asked for any financial help they could provide or payment plans. They didnt give us many options then they casually tell me wife they can chop his leg off and he will be fine on 3 legs. The doctor even said i have a 3 legged cat he will be fine. I work in a for profit business so I understand the need to have some kind of profit. However when youre charging literally double what the surgeon we found is charging, then we question the reason for being in business. There are real people with real problems that are sometimes preposterous and they need a little help. We didnt want it for free we just wanted to pay it over time. It just sucks to go somewhere with some hope to then get shut down over the need to make 1 dollar. I understand cost of facility and employees and all that, but i also understand that we are real humans who need real help sometimes. Luckily we found someone who cares and is willing to help us out after we explained our situation.

Our Chihuahua was a 50/50 chance of making it through the night and with their help and her will to live she has pushed through. You can rest assured your pet will get the finest level of care from each of the professionals at Blue Pearl Specialty + Emergency Pet Hospital in Gainesville Florida. We were involved with all shifts of staff over 2 days and they were all very good!I have included a bunch of pictures of the facility so you can have a better idea of what to expect when you bring your baby in to see them whether middle of the night on a Holiday weekend or just a specialty visit.

Im quite sure I was his dog in a past life...I couldnt be present during his exam, but Pasquale only had good things to say about it later...The communication was superb, and ive never felt more involved in his care before, DESPITE the fact that i wasnt even there with them....Being limited on funds, i was a little worried, but they provided options until we found one that suited both his well being, and my pandemic abused budget. They even went a bit beyond that...Last night, despite limitations, the Blue Pearl staff there at 10:30pm - 12:00am more than proved to me that they cared about my soul mate, and very best friend. This is why I would recommend them to anyone.Extra bonus points and gold star stickers to Emily...

This place is great. Seriously great. This is the second time one of my pets has been here during after hours for emergency care.My senior dog had been ill. Her normal vet hadn’t been very helpful or responsive. I felt like I was bothering them to have them care for my baby. So I called these kind folks and they helped me with a second opinion and diagnosis and then helped explain the options (I knew generally what the answer would be for an 18yr old medium breed dog).Dr. Ashman and the staff were amazing, compassionate, and considerate to both my baby’s needs and our loss. Do not believe the negative reviews. These kind folks were the best to deal with in my time of need. They took good care of my baby and my family in the process.

We brought our 3 year old cat here in August. Upon arrival, It took an hour for someone to come outside to get her (there was all but 2 other cars in the lot)we voiced our concerns that she had been acting strange, stopped urinating earlier that morning, and wasn’t eating or drinking. After 2 hours, the vet called and said he’d need to do diagnostic testing that would cost around $2,000. This included a urinary catheter, clearing of her urinary tract, some x ray imaging, and anesthesia. He said he was sure she had a urinary issue but could not guarantee anything (we’d need to spend the $2,000 in order to get any sort of answers). I understand bills, medicine, costs and other factors. As a triple business owner and chronically ill person myself, I can be sympathetic on both sides. They have a practice to run, but charging $2,000+ to β€œrule out and/or not guarantee a diagnosis or problem to be solved” for that amount of money is like paying to test drive a car, not purchase it, and receive no refund. We stated from the very first phone call that our budget was not high, that we had just moved to Gainesville, my boyfriend is a college student, and the money we were able to spend wasn’t going to be much. I myself have 2 dogs, one who needed 2 knee replacements back to back. I understand responsible pet ownership and the sudden emergencies and costs that come with them. However inconvenient it may have been, we were determined to get her medical care, but were hoping to not be met with price gauging and fear mongering. After speaking with the doctor the second time, we reiterated what we could spend. He then said β€œI’m concerned with her not urinating, if she doesn’t urinate by tonight, she will suffer, I then recommend euthanizing her as it will be incredibly painful.” He said the E word more than 4 times in a 15 minute window. Watching my partner break down over the health of his cat (whom he just brought home for the first time less than a week prior) on top of the stress he already had from moving, was heart wrenching. Hearing this doctor say whatever he could to tear our hearts down so that we’d pull any of the funds we had available out. Due to the chain of events that occurred here: the 4 hours in the car, just waiting with no communication. We told them our budget, we understood our limitations and that possible fate of not being able to help our cat, but was met with 4 times our budget, and an β€œthis is the lowest amount of service we can provide, our hands are tied, this is the only way to help her”. Then the incredibly rude service from the receptionists/vet techs, being treated like our time was disposable, it made me come to a conclusion that I know is a heavy one - this place runs like a money mill and they know that pulling at the strings of pet owners will most likely get them what they want. I have a close friend who just graduated from UF Veterinary Medicine, she wanted to quit more than once because the animals suffering and the stern personality it takes to be a vet, was almost too much for her. That is someone who is in it for the animals. I called and explained the entire situation in which she met me with β€œnone of that is necessary, she needed anxiety medication first, cats are finicky and need to adjust to change, they often present seemingly bad symptoms when it’s just run of the mill stress”. That’s exactly what it was, our cat took 4 days of anxiety meds, and she’s perfectly healthy. She peed the next day, and there was indeed: no suffering. There was no blockage, and I’m glad we didn’t take the advice to euthanize her due to our lack of funds to β€œdiagnose her”. We went with our gut. They’ve now proceeded to try and call my partner on a blocked number, why would you think we wouldn’t answer?

I took my 3 year old cat to the Blue Pearl because she was acting very strange. First off, it took an unnecessarily and ridiculously long amount of time. We arrived at 12 noon and didnt leave until well after 4. We waited for over an hour in the car for our initial estimate (after waiting for over an hour for them to even come out and tell us what the estimate was going to be for, which they claimed was because they emailed the estimate. They did NOT email the estimate, nor did they tell me thats what they were going to do). Secondly, when I said the price was outrageous, they said they would see what they could do. The vet called me and told me that my only other option was to provide pain meds and a urinary muscle relaxer in the hope that she would urinate (he claimed he knew she had at least a partial urinary blockage). He then went on to try to guilt trip me into paying $600 dollars to confirm his diagnosis and then $2,000 for the treatment if the diagnosis were true. I told him I simply do not have that kind of money, as is the case with most people. The vet then went on to say I should euthanize my cat if she did not urinate by the end of the night because she should not be in pain because of my lack of funds. I cried on the way home because I was so scared and felt so horrible. I arrived home with my cat and her meds and she was completely fine within hours. She urinated and has been fine ever since. I understand where the vet was coming from, but it felt like I was being guilt tripped into paying for expensive and completely unnecessary testing when simple medication was all she needed. The fact that the vet told me on 4 seperate occasions during our conversations that it was highly likely without the treatments that I would need to euthanize my cat suggests to me that he/ they care less about the animals and more about squeezing vulnerable and desperate people for every cent they have.I am still angry at the anxiety and overall horrid emotional state that place put me in. I hope others do not have this experience, and that it was just a lack of subtly and compassion on the part of the vet. Sadly, I just do not think that is the case. My cat is happier than ever and under absolutely no circumstances should euthanasia even entered into the conversations based on my cats symptoms and behavior. BEWARE OF THE HORRID GUILT TRIPPING AND PRICE GOUGING THIS PLACE IS PARTAKING IN.

The woman who answered was very kind and told me it was okay. Once we arrived, both myself, my husband and my badly hurt dog were treated with much kindness and respect. Everything was explained to us completely. When my dog needed to undergo surgery to fix the bite wounds he suffered, Doctor Molstad explained the whole procedure and the expenses more than adequately. The vet tech who helped us was wonderful as well, I am sorry I cant remember her name. They kept our dog from around 10:30 pm to around 6 am. The next morning Milo collapsed and it was too late for UFs vet to do anything. Of course my dog got sick on Christmas Day, so I brought him here due to our vet being closed. I wouldnt have brought him on Christmas Day at all if I wasnt concerned for his life. There were several dogs in the waiting room. I work as a nurse in the Emergency Department, I know and understand wait times can be lengthy. I also understand the triage process. My dog was about 1 and a half and having an acute, life threatening illness. Many dogs were called back before us for chronic issues. Stable dogs that appeared to be content sitting in the waiting room. I know this because I was in ear shot of the front desk for the screening process and I could hear the owners tell the tech who came out to get them. My dog was actively vomiting blood and pooping blood while we were there. And each time I informed the clerk at the front desk. Still they brought back (and not to be mean towards other owners, or state that their problem wasnt a problem) my dog hasnt eaten in 3 days or this patch of skin is itchy Until I finally burst out in tears stating that my dog was going to aspirate after I had to scrap the blood and sticky saliva out of his throat because he was so dehydrated and was choking on it. Only then did they bring him back. We waited about 2 hours, which felt like an eternity. This is not a complaint about wait time. This is a complaint about the triage process and recognizing acute illnesses vs chronic. And if there isnt a triage process in place, maybe there should be.My dog had to stay the night for fluids and IV antibiotics, and the vet told me when he was being discharged that if he was not treated he would have died.I do think the care they provided my dog was excellent once he was seen. They gave you a sheet of the rounding they do every hour, the medications and the times given and being a nurse, I loved it. My dog came back to me like a new dog. The vets and techs there know what they are doing when they are treating the animals. I would return there if my vet was unable to see me.

The staff was absolutely wonderful in caring for Mousse, but also in communication to us for his care. The exceptional service we received happened before we even got there, when we called to see if we could be seen and they let us know to come in right away and that they would begin prepping for him to see the Dr. They clearly listed and informed us on each step they would take to treat him while being very open and up front with any charges for the services before providing. The doctor set a goal of having our guy out in 2 hours pending any urgent arrivals (it is an emergency vet after all) and so we left to get dinner. Before we were done we got a call that our baby was ready! Mousse is home now, happy and healthy - and we are all back to enjoying the holiday with friends and family! A big thank you to the team there and Happy Holidays!

I have been meaning to post a review for quite some time but it keeps slipping by me. After our lab Carly ate an entire bar of soap made with essential oils and proceeded to become very ill one night, we had no choice but to take her into an emergency vet. We were thrilled with the care she received while there. The vet was very attentive and thorough, while being loving to our dog. After an overnight stay for treatment, she was discharged the next day and was a new dog. Im grateful for their services, and for helping us during a very scary event. We wouldnt hesitate to use them again, and will if the need for an emergency vet arises!

My little Boston Terrier saw the ophthalmology team for elevated pressure in his eye. Dr. Mangan was extremely pleasant and patient and was willing to spend as much time as we needed to understand our options to treat the glaucoma causing Murphys discomfort. After the consultation, multiple tests, and two take-home medications, my bill came to $187. I was very surprised; I never seem to get out of my regular vets office for under $300 when we have issues, so this was just a wonderful experience all around.

We just had our pet Paco euthanized. We have never received the courtesy and treatment from a Veterinary as great as we received today. Two weeks earlier, we had him in to see what was wrong. After a complete examination, we received in-depth information on the vets opinion as to the problem and we decided to try a couple of medications to see if they would improve his quality of life. Unfortunately, they did not work so the decision today was to euthanize. Dr. Olivia Pittillo, in consultation with the surgeon, Dr. Eric Herman, were the most courteous and considerate Veterinarians we have ever encountered. We have nothing but the highest regard for Doctors Pittillo and Herman and their staff and recommend them highly.

By recommendation from my primary veterinarian I visited Blue Pearl Vet Hospital in Gainesville, FL with my 7 yrs old cat. The amount of time before I actually saw a vet was excessive being almost an hour. The vet I saw was nice, however did not exhibit a professional appearance. Dingy white coat with worn holes in the elbows, she just looked terrible. My cat was being seen for difficulty breathing and nasal congestion. I agreed to bloodwork, and radiology (x-rays) that was fine but the vet insisted on echocardiogram of my cats heart. Not necessary but allowed anyway. The x-rays required to be sent out for reading at an additional cost. Really, radiology cant be reviewed in-house? They wanted to do an $1,800 ultrasound and I said no.The U of FL Small Animal Specialty Hospital charges $1,200 only 8 miles away that is $600 LESS. I would not recommend Blue Pearl whatsoever. I know they are a franchised owned mega corporate hospitals and they have specific criteria they must adhere but they do not put the owner or animals first. They are interested only in racking up money! This was the second cat over the years that Ive taken to Blue Pearl of Gainesville, and Ill never take another! Never.

This hospital truely cares about giving their patients expert care. They are compassionate about how they present difficult information and they take the time to fully explain what is going on with the animal. I brought my dog, Dexter, here for an emergency spleenectomy. He was seen right away and my doctor, Dr. Luria, kept me informed of everything that was happening the whole time he was there. I was emotional and she was supportive of giving me time to make informed decisions. She was incredibly understanding of how difficult the whole situation was for me. He had surgery overnight and my surgeon, Dr. Herman, let me know when Dexter went in for surgery, he called me as soon as he was out and told me about the procedure. He gave me the time to ask any and all questions I had (even though it was 4:30 am). As hard as that night was for me, I felt I had Dexter at the best place and I knew that he was receiving the best care he could get. During his stay there post surgery, I was allowed to visit any time I wanted (I called first to make sure) and I could call and check on him at any hour day or night. I will be doing treatments that Dexter will now need for hemangiosarcoma with Blue Pearl and I am comforted knowing he will be in the most capable hands. This place is amazing. All of the staff is kind and compassionate, not just the veterinarians. I cant say enough positive things about Blue Pearl.Post emergency, Dr. Sabatino of Blue Pearl is now currently treating my dog for hemangiosarcoma and I know he is in the best possible hands. She takes the time to listen to my questions and makes sure I understand everything. She will call me to check on Dexter in after hours and will also listen to any ideas that I have that could be potential options. She has gone above and beyond to help us with this terrible cancer and I cant recommend her and Blue Pearl more. They are always friendly and you can tell they love your pet the minute you walk in the door (all of the staff)! Going to the hospital with a pet is always an awful experience because generally it is an emergency. Blue Pearl makes that situation the best that it can be and your fur child will be in great hands with anyone there.

To lose a pet is never easy, but this center made the process a little bit better. Around one in the morning, I had to find somewhere to bring our long time family pet to be put down. The front desk personnel immediately answered and assured me that we could walk right in. Once there, the woman upfront helped me fill out the paper work and was so caring. She listened to my stories and was so sweet while I cried my eyes out. She brought me into the comfort room and minutes later I was allowed to hold my cat. The staff gave me privacy as I was saying goodbye. The veterinarian came in and explained the process of what was going to occur. She walked me through every step and made the actual procedure easy on me and my cat. Afterwards, they allowed me time to compose myself and say my final goodbyes. They all grieved with me and I could see that this is more than just a job to them. They gave me a beautiful box and I was able to take her home. The whole process took a little longer than an hour, but it was filled with such support from the whole team. I wish I had gotten everyones name so that I could thank them all personally. I honestly couldnt imagine any team being any more considerate to me. I will be forever thankful to each and every one of them. I know Mary was thankful too.

UPDATE 14 May 2021: Dropped a star from the rating and thinking about dropping another. New phone system seems to be designed to prevent you from talking to a real person. Voice messages and e-mails fail to receive timely attention, if any reply is made at all. Promises regarding follow ups to messages or conversations are not kept. Repeated *patient* inquiries are required before they respond to requests from pharmacies to confirm or renew scripts. Both the professional staff and the back office are guilty of these failings.ORIGINAL REVIEW: Meh. Definitely not up to national standards for Blue Pearl. The staff certainly cares about the animals and the care appears adequate but less than fair communication between front desk and clinicians. Requests regarding contact with owners are often not honored -- is it so difficult to leave messages for both halves of a working couple these days? Or even *one*, when a callback is promised? Absolutely ridiculous they cant separate dogs from cats in the waiting area (though it can be a challenge when so many dog owners refuse to keep their pets on a short leash). Another review suggests the vet school at UF, certainly the best choice in the area, but theres so much demand for services at UF its tough finding someone taking new patients. BTW, be sure to check/count your pills before leaving BP.

While APES was quick to see our dog on 8/13/16, we got the distinct impression that they were more concerned about how much they could charge us than actually finding out what was wrong with our pet. We made it clear that we were traveling 90 minutes to their clinic but their only comment upon being told that we were on our way was to state that their initial exam fee is $109.00. I was also not very comfortable when they would not do the initial examination of our dog in front of us and instead immediately took her to the back of the clinic.Turns out that our dog had Ehrlichiosis, (something detected within the first 10 minutes by our Vet) which is not very common but can easily be detected with a simple blood smear, which really should have really been an automatic test given that our dog was slightly anemic but showing otherwise healthy organ tests through the blood work. It really did not seem like the attending Vet wanted to give her an IV (to help with her dehydration) unless we left her overnight and only did a fluid pouch and an antibiotic injection when directly asked to do so.Again, the staff was friendly but it seemed like the clinic was more interested in how much money they could collect for their services instead of trying to see what was wrong with our dog and devising a treatment plan.

So now that I have my dogs ashes safe at home with me, I have to worn you never to go to this vet.We arrived at the vet around 10pm. The staff helped me get our dog onto a stretcher. They wheeled him into a back room and they stopped me from following. They said I wasnt aloud to go into the back room with him. I thought, ok, they will just take his vitals. Then we did all the paperwork and waited...and waited. We were the only customers there so I couldnt understand what was taking so long. While I had to sit there listening to my dog cry out in pain while muzzled, the vet techs and the girl behind the counter were making jokes, playing around, and were COMPLETELY inconsiderate. My husband and I were pacing the lobby in tears and while they laughed and fooled around. We waited over 45 minutes to see our dog! I could have sat with him and comforted him, but instead, I had only minutes to say goodbye. When they finally brought him into a room, I took his muzzle off and his lips and tongue were so dry. He looked so stressed out. He had nerve pain and insisted on trying to get up. What did they do, tie him down in the back? I know damn well no one sat with him that whole time.Β  After we put our sweet Judge to sleep, all I could hear is everyone still laughing loudly. It boiled my blood. Have a little respect!!! The girl behind the counter was the worst. As we were paying and balling our eyes out, she could care less and thought her jokes to the boy next to her were more important. As we were leaving, she did say, Oh yeah, sorry about your dog.Β  We own a rescue and have been to so many vets. I will say this one was by far the worst, filthiest, inconsiderate place I have yet to see. These kids need to go back to college and rethink their profession because this is not for them!!Last night as I was picking up his ashes, I saw a vet tech come into the lobby and tell a customer they were ready for her to see her dog. She was able to go back into the room that I was forbidden to go in. I dont know the story behind it. But that made me even more angry. I asked the girl behind the counter if I could get the names of the people that worked the night I was there. She just shrugged her shoulders and said, I dont know, I just fill in here.Β Β  Wow...just wow.

Per recommendation of my Banfield vet, I scheduled an appointment with AVS for my cat who had a cancerous mass on her face. Dr. Herman and staff were very kind to me, especially when I broke down crying because the first cost estimate they gave me was beyond what I could afford (and I thought I could do nothing to save my cat). The nurse, I feel horrible for forgetting her name, handed me tissues and gave me a hug. After some computing they offered me the next best option, which was within my price range. We went through with the surgery and my cat had her stitches out yesterday. Wearing the cone made her sad but that couldn’t be helped. Can’t speak for the emergency services (which I’ve never used), but with scheduled appointments, this place is wonderful. AVS made a traumatic experience for my cat (and let’s be honest, me too!!) as positive as possible. All the staff kept complementing her personality and fur color, I like to think she could feel their good vibes when she was in the back without me.

While my baby laid in a room alone, because they would not let me in the back with her, she laid alone locked up in a seizure while they slowly explained what her problem was. I hate this Vet and it makes me sick that she ignored my wishes and let my baby suffer. They suckkkkkkkk. On October 2, 2016 I took our 17yr old Min Pin to Affiliated Pets. He had a lot of swelling in his face that came on quickly. The 6 months leading up to that date he was in and out of our local vets office with many health issues. After talking to the vet, and my husband, we decided it was time to say goodbye to him. The vet, techs, and front staff were very understanding. They handled everything in the privacy of a back room and our vet, Katie, was wonderful through the whole ordeal. I told myself that if I was ever faced with making that difficult decision again for our other animals, then I would take them there. Fast forward to the last week of November. Our 14yr old Pomeranian was diagnosed with IVDD, kidney failure, and bladder cancer. Our vet said to take him home, give him lots of love, and once again say goodbye to another one of our furry family members. On December 4th I took him to Affiliated Pets. Anyone who has ever had to make this decision knows just how gut-wrenching it is. With that said, I walk in with my little guy and sign in. I called ahead but also told the receptionist again why we were there. Immediately I could tell that she was indifferent. I dont expect anyone to cry over the decision I made to put him down. They havent spent the last 14 years with him. I do however expect sympathy. Not someone who wants to go over the paperwork, that comes along with euthanizing an animal, like Im buying a car. Im fighting back the tears while she does this in front of everyone in the waiting room. The moment she decided to tell other patients why I was there- I lost it. She had absolutely no regard for my feelings or keeping the matter private. Not a shred of decency appeared until after I let her know how I felt. Suddenly Im told Im very sorry, let me get you in a room. I said were done here and I left with my little guy in tow. Tomorrow I say goodbye to him at our local vet. Its not broadcasted there. In fact they have a candle in their waiting room with a sign beside it.. it says β€œWhen this candle is burning an owner is saying goodbye to their pet. Please speak softly and be courteous during this difficult time.” Maybe Affiliated Pets could learn something from them.

Back in February, I took my mini yorkie, Buttercup, to our regular vet because I was concerned about her belly feeling lumpy. They did X-rays and told me it was a closed pyometra (her uterus was full of fluid and if it burst, it could be fatal) and that I should take her to Affiliated Veterinary Specialists so I did. AVS confirmed the diagnoses and said surgery needed to be done immediately. They did surgery on her that same night. They called me when they finished with updates, they were excellent to me and my fur baby until I went to pick her up the next afternoon. They gave me three medications for her, including a narcotic, along with the instructions. The narcotic dosages seemed unusual to me but they assured me they calculated the proper dosage in regards to her post surgery weight of 5-lbs. I took her home and kept an eye on her all night. I gave her the medications per their instructions. I took her back that same night around 11pm because my fur baby was jerking around after I had given her the narcotic and I had no idea what was going on. They told me, just to give her some time and she had relaxed about an hour later and sent us home. I continued to give her the medications as instructed. The next day, I get a call from AVS saying they gave me the wrong narcotics. The bottle said each pill was 10mg, turns out they were actually 50mg. I had been overdosing my 5-lbs mini yorkie because these β€œprofessionals” not only gave me the wrong dosage of narcotics but also labeled the medication container wrong. They told me to start cutting the pills into 4 pieces. They’re lucky they somehow figured out this colossal mistake before anything fatal happened to my dog. I wish someone could explain to me how narcotics are accidentally dispensed incorrectly. I was livid after that phone call. Thankfully, my little baby is thriving and doing well after all of this but I would never go back nor recommend this place to anyone else.

But what really made the difference was that Dr. Daw went the extra mile to figure out what was wrong. He did an x-ray and found out Ash had fluid in his lungs, probably from cancer, and that even if we brought him in sooner, he still might not have made it. She has been seen by every veterinarian and tech there over the years. I can say without hesitation, it is the best care anywhere. Professional but caring and empathetic. Have I waited. From time to time, yes. In all medicine emergencies happen and animals get into crisis just like people. These animals are here because they already have a serious condition. I dont mind waiting occasionally because when my dog is the emergency I am grateful they are willing to see her. Has it been expensive. Yes, as is all healthcare for people and pets. She couldnt get pet insurance coverage because of pre-existing conditions. But she is still with me because of their expertise and knowledge and commitment to their patients and clients. The fourth day of illness, after I suggest Parvo, he was tested and supposedly treated, unsuccessfully. A simple test that could have possibly saved our pets life was not performed by either facility. Money will not bring our fur baby back but I asked Affiliated Emergency Pet Services about reimbursement of the $2000 we paid for Totos care and was told they would have someone review it. Do NOT take your dog in on a holiday. They do not have enough staff to see animals in a timely manner. The receptionist was rude and nobody provided me with any update. When I first arrived, she was more interested in taking pizza back to the staff than with talking to me. I ended up leaving in disgust after waiting 2 hours and waiting another 45 minutes in an exam room. I was told there were more critical patients ahead of me, but I was never given updates on how long things would take and the staff didnt seem to care that my poor dog was throwing up all over me or that my dog and I arrived in an uncomfortable state since he had gotten sick in the car, which left a mess all over me and him. When I was about to leave, the receptionist told me that my dog was next in line. She made no comment that I would end up getting stuck in the exam room for a long time. The tech took my dog away and came back in 10 minutes, saying that the vet would speak to me and give me an estimate, whatever that means. I didnt see her again and waited for my poor shivering chihuahua until he threw up on me after we were ignored for so long. When I confronted the receptionist after being in the exam room for over 45 minutes and telling her that my dog was throwing up everywhere, I was told there was only one vet on duty and that we triage (something she liked to repeat every time I asked what was going on). When I requested a manager, I was told there was not one on duty and that I would have to e-mail. Thats all fine, but the real problem isnt triage, its a lack of staff and resources and a lack of supervision. AVSs mismanagement of staff became my problem. When I went to the UF Small Animal Hospital, my dog was seen immediately and ended up being admitted, which tells me that my dog was way more ill than the incompetent staff at AVS seemed to think. So much for triage! The staff at UF were way more professional and thorough as well and made me feel way more comfortable.N.b. My previous visit a few months ago in the middle of the night DID go a lot better, but that was not on a holiday and there were actually competent staff on duty. I would not recommend this clinic because of the inconsistency of level of service. If your dog is not in imminent danger of death, go to UF Small Animal Hospital instead. They are much better equipped and have staff who are much better trained.

Please read before allowing your pet to have surgery at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists (AVS) in Gainesville!! My dog had surgery for a ruptured cruciate ligament in the knee (TTA). Her right leg was done first by Dr. Aragon, who is board certified, but no longer practices in Gainesville. Surgery on her right leg went well with little complication. However, Dr. Herman performed the same procedure on her left leg two months after the right leg, and there were multiple complications.Dr. Herman is NOT board certified (When a veterinarian is board certified, they are TRULY a specialist with extensive experience qualified by a difficult exam). When I asked about his certification, I was told he was preparing to take it and had to complete a research paper before he could. In the subsequent procedures performed on my dog, it came to light that at least one part (and arguably multiple parts) of Dr. Hermans procedure was not done properly; recognized by multiple board certified specialists. I realize that there are no guarantees for any surgical procedures, and that they all come with risk of complication. I also acknowledge that everyone was initially helpful and I was given discounts on the follow-up procedures that were recommended. When I knew mistakes were made, I eventually felt uncomfortable trusting my dog in Dr. Hermans care, regardless of any discounts. However, when my general practice veterinarian and I reached out to AVS other board certified surgeons they respectfully informed they were discontinuing care and refuse to treat my dog (despite the fact it was their only non board certified surgeon, Dr. Herman, who incorrectly performed the procedure). The main reason Im writing this review is to make people aware that the surgeon practicing at the Gainesville location is NOT board certified, but the price of the procedure is the same as if Dr. Herman WERE board certified. And although they advertise an anesthesiologist, she does not practice in the Gainesville location on a regular basis (she would be available through phone call vs being present to monitor my pet and ready to treat any complications or adverse reactions immediately). If I could go back in time I would have taken her directly to the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital, as ALL of their surgeons are board certified, some of whom specialize in orthopedics, and they are NOT paid on commission.
