Took our kitty Chloe here. Our emergency vet misdiagnosed her w/cancer before pathology even came back. They made too many mistakes, losers!!I knew I was going to being her here to UF. I can’t say enough about how on top of it they were. I was constantly updated about how she was doing before and after testing. Helen the student was fantastic and Dr Walton was the best. I am very thankful. It turned out that Chloe had an inflammatory process going on with her bladder. She is doing fabulously!!
I first took my pet here after it being 2am after I got home from work, and saw my pet had gotten into medicine I had around. They did everything in their power and warned me she might have liver/kidney failure and even lasting effects on her organs, because of the toxicity she ingested. She came home to me after a couple of days, groggy for sure, a week after I brought her to my primary vet, and her functions were COMPLETELY normal. They saved her.Second visit was today, our family pet was sick for a couple of days, started breathing weird a night prior, with plans to take her in, I observed her having a seizure. My plans to go to the primary vet was shaken so I took her here. She was a old girl, a stray that we picked up off the road, and never had gotten a vaccine in her life. Instead of ridiculing me (I wouldnt have been the right person about that anyway) they just accepted it and took her tests like they would a normal pet. It turns out our 11/12 year old stray family pet had severe diabetes that were just showing, and signs of kidney failure. I let my mother handle the call regarding all of the status, and the doctor (Hamilton) was very sweet and caring. She told us her honest opinion when we asked what was best for our pet, and she is in a better place now, where she can dream all day of Mcdonalds hamburgers.A very warm thank you for the receptionists, and Dr. Hamilton, and the techs for taking care of our baby, and my baby previous.
We brought out cat to their emergency room over a weekend... She was critical & despite best efforts she was not able to overcome it. The vets were very thoughtful and discussing all options from minimal to you the most extreme, but also help advocate for what was reasonable to. They did not ever allow our cat to suffer. When it came time to let her go, they were extremely compassionate and thoughtful through out the difficult choice. At no additional cost, they make impressions of your animals paw prints to mail to you and we chose to donate our cats organs which allowed us to have a necropsy to better understand why she died. While our choice to donate her organs was made out of wanting her death to mean something, we found out that the necropsy would be at no cost to us.If you bring your animal there for an emergency, I did not expect to spend several hours waiting to find out the status. But that was because they were stabilizing her.My only complaint is they require 75% of the proposed treatment to be paid up front. While we never asked, it felt like if you couldnt pay for what your pet needed they would let them die. They do not offer any type of payment plans. For that reason I cant give them five stars. Most people dont have disposable income to cover an emergency like this.
Unfortunately We had a bunny that passed away after they said she will be fine she did not have no more than 24 hours to live and I wish I knew that. It could’ve definitely been prevented. I tried calling six veterinarians in my area but unfortunately no one was in so My mom had to drive an hour away to get my daughters pet to be looked at. I’m looking at the reviews now today and I wish I did a long time ago because there’s a lot of one stars. I hope it gets better .
They don’t care about animals they only care about the money, I brought in a kitten less than a week old eyes not even open and they euthanized, when all it would have taken was a cleaning and some stitches, I have been a vet tech for 5+ years. Please for the love of your fur babies do not take your babies to this vet. Take the extra 30 minutes -1 hour drive to take them to Saint. Augustine. They killed this poor baby because they did not want to take the time to let them live. The kitten wasn’t even bleeding so it was a superficial cut (didn’t penetrate the meat, it didn’t hit vital organs) and they KILLED! (Euthanized) this baby not even a week old!!! Please if you love your animals do not take them here!!! I wish I would have read the reviews before I took this baby here they could have had a chance if I wouldn’t have taken them here. A two story building “dedicated to saving lives” couldn’t even save a kittens life with a superficial cut. Please for the love of everything do not please do not take your loved ones here. ❤️ I sat for 20 minutes waiting for a response at the emergency door, from the lady at the desk to get off the phone just to take this kitten back so continued to speak on the phone for 20-30 minutes after me and my husband arrived, in an obvious hurry to save the kittens life. They ONLY care about the money. -5 stars. I will keep making negative rewview till this place makes a change. This isn’t the only thing this place has done wrong!!!
We can’t say enough about UF small animal hospital. It’s never easy hearing that your fur baby might have a serious condition, especially when they are 13 years old. Our dog Romeo was in a little over a week ago for removal of one of his parathyroid glands as well as bladder stone removal & a liver biopsy. From the moment we had our surgery consultation we could tell this was a good place. Alexandra, the student vet on our case, came to take Romeo back for his physical & we were shocked by how calmly Romeo went with her. He has never done this with anyone anytime we’ve had to drop him off anywhere! It was clear that he trusted her! Alexandra & Dr. Schlaeppi were both so informative about the procedure, things they found on imaging, and overall letting us know what to expect. She also praised us for our research we had done on our own & how well we’ve taken care of our sweet boy. They really eased our worries about putting this 13 year old pup under anesthesia too. He went in for surgery the next morning and despite the delays due to other procedures taking a bit longer Romeo’s actual procedure was just over an hour! We were shocked at how quickly they got him in & out. They were fantastic with giving us updates afterward & the days following and even allowed us to see our sweet boy the following day. He is recovering so well & Dr. Schlaeppi has continued to be in communication with my parents for updates about how he’s doing. It is quite a drive from winter garden that we’ve had to make for calcium level checks but seeing how trusting & comfortable our dog is has made the drive worth it. We are so grateful to Alexandra & Dr. Schlaeppi for taking such good care of our sweet boy & putting our minds at ease.
They handled our situation so well, our son has decided to become a vet and go to school here! Amazing staff and the best care available. Thank you UF!
Ive tried bringing my beautiful fur baby Lazarus to UF small vet ER twice and both times I have been met with nothing but smoke and mirrors. They tried to charge me $750 for the first hospitalization while saying that I couldnt have an itemized receipt for what I was being charged for. I ended up paying ~$140 for two prescription medications and his checkup. Beyond this, the second time I called (just wanting an anti-nausea injection) I was put on hold for 15 minutes and was told that I would still be charged a workup fee but that it changed for each vet and that it would be upwards of $60 even though my cat had been checked that morning at another vet which I still had the paperwork for. At the end of the call the girl said my dog wouldnt be able to probably get in today and that I should go to Urgent Vet. If you want help look elsewhere, but unfortunately this is one of the only 24 hour vet clinics in Gainesville so you may not have much of a choice. I was actually once a pre-vet UF animal sciences major and I am so glad I changed my major and avoided being affiliated with this place.
My cat was here about a year ago on the verge of going into liver failure. This hospital saved his life! I was more than pleased with the care he received while he was here. The doctors always kept me informed and made sure I understood everything they were doing. They didn’t ever seem like they were in a rush to get off the phone with me either. I would definitely recommend them!
0 Stars from me. Do not go there. They are overated. Nothing but kids there not knowing what they are doing. They do not care about you or your baby. They killed my precious LittleFoot, he was my Angel miracle baby boy. He was going to be ok, but they put a feeding tube in him and then did not feed him at all. So why put him through the strain of the tube if they werent going to use it. I have a picture of him before the tube and one after the tube, its like night and day. They can cover their tracks and say thats not what killed him but I know the truth. They wont never admit their mistake. But hey what do they care they got $4,000.00 richer off of us. And still my baby boy is dead because of them. They are heartless. If you truly love your baby and really want a fighting chance dont take them there. They are not what they seem or advertise to be. They do not save lives there, Especially on the weekends. How can you be a 24 hour emergency hospital if your doctors and specialist take the weekends off. It dont matter if you have money or not they still wont save your baby. For all the technology, medicines, every thing at their disposal, still no success rate. They took my heart and are getting away with it. I urge any one who is reading this, please dont make the same mistake I did, do not trust your babys life to those cold hearted monsters.
I took my little guy here a month ago. It was an emergency, but they did not answer the phone the first nor the second time I called and I stayed on the line for a long time. Once we arrived, the wait time was 3 hours only for the vet to tell us he was fine and only had a scratch on his paw and therefore was limping because of that. Took him to a checkup, turns out he fractured his wrist and his pinky and now he will have to live with it because we thought we were waiting for a scratch to heal when in reality his bones were screwed up.
My dog got sick late last night therefore I decided to take her to an emergency vet. Once I got to the hospital the vet sees her and quickly comes out to tell me that she seems to be having a neurological problem and referred me to UF Small Hospital and said this is the only place that will take her at this time to be evaluated by a neurologist. After a minute of making the decision to drive two hours under the rain to the hospital around 1am I called to confirm that they were open. I told her over the phone I just came out of an emergency vet hospital and that the place recommended me to take her there, the receptionist even asked whats the situation and I told her that it was neurological, she said to go ahead and bring her. I told her it was going to be a while since I was far. Once I got there I check my god in and told the second receptionist I was told it was neurological. She was very nice and took her in to have the Vet call me later and ask for my historys dog and then be told by her the exact same thing the first hospital told me. When I ask she said Im just an emergency Vet and no one will be able to see her until the morning since the first neurologist will arrive at 0800. Of course the charge for me to leave my dog until the morning will be about $800.00. When I returned to the reception area and told them about my frustration. The receptionist then dares to tell me she said over the phone no specialist will be in until the morning. Why would I drive two hours in the middle of the night on a rainy night to be told the exact same thing that I was told 25 minutes from my house. Then again she said she told me if it was an emergency then things would be different. We were literally standing in the emergency room of the hospital, again why would I drive two hours when I live closer to Orlando and I could have stayed safely at home and make an appointment with a neurologist during the day. I guess no one can get sick at that time of night. Very insensible no apologies and of course they charged me $134.00 because its their policy. They tried to say I lied and that I was told one the phone the correct information when I clearly wasnt. The Vet didnt even wanted to see me. At least an apology would have suffice but the receptionist that made the mistake didnt even speak to me anymore. Do not recommend.
The receptionist was nice but the rest was horrible, theyre very pushy to get you to pay them exorbitant prices and scaring you into thinking your pet will die if you dont do what they say. They also rlly want you to sign up for a credit card and push it down your throat several times.
They were exceptional at every encounter, especially the oncology and clinical trials teams. They served cutting edge knowledge and genuine care every time. I’m grateful for the time they gave me with my pet.
Wish I could leave -5 stars, I hate this place brought a kitten (eyes weren’t even open yet) im a vet tech I would have taken this cat if my work was open, at this time. The kitten had a cut/gas on its side didn’t even go past the meat, (wasn’t bleeding) and they euthanized the kitten, the bill for just looking at the kitten to see what they had to do was $170 I can’t afford a bill over $1,000 which it clearly was going to be. They euthanized the barely week old kitten, whe all it needed was to be cleaned up and some stitches. If you care for your fur baby DO NOT BRING IT HERE
I would give it a Zero star, service was pathetic. They don’t care for your pet, we waited 5 hours with a crying puppy and they still didn’t see him. Absolutely the worse veterinary hospital I have been too. Do not waste your time!
Was on hold for over 40 minutes. So we decided to drive there. After calling a few vet services that recommended them, they refused to take in 2 kittens claiming there was no space available. Then down talked the other vet services for recommending them. We ended up getting excellent care at the Petsmart on Archer Road since UF refused us. Terrible experience and I will never recommend them to anyone. Just find a local vet office.
Today I took my dog Lucy to veterinary appointment. People working there were nice enough but have very interesting and disappointed story to share. My dog is a rescue and she is scared of new people so doing exams- she had to wear muzzle - which I put on her in the exam room - just seconds before vaccinations and other exams.I was holding her over side and couple students also behind me - while doctor was making exams / my husband was present too taking to her and petting her! She was very scared and tried to move hard and in one move she moved side way and her left front leg went over my back and scratched my back - I felt deep pain but we had to finish exam and all the focus was over her - ASAP when finished I removed muzzle and we stepped out- I was bleeding from my right finger scratched and felt hard pain on the back- I asked my husband to look at my back and he was like you are bleeding very deep 3 scratches from her nails from her left front leg - I went to wash my bleeding finger and looked at my back in the restroom mirror - horrible long scratches burning! I asked receptionist to please give me first aid antiseptic or something to clean quickly wound not to get infected- her respond was she Does Not Have Anything! I asked to go inside and ask doctor please - to clean quickly the wounds- she came out and said - the best is to go home and clean it home! They have stuff for pets! I couldn’t believe my 👂! So I asked again please go inside and ask doctor once more it’s impossible there is not first aid ⛑ most important stuff in the box First Aid kept in every office! No once more - in the Hospital! The doctor came out - - /I showed my back/ —and she repeated they don’t have anything /plus I won’t repeat what else - she said added - and what I heard - because my brain will explode and I am being here very polite toward them and the system they apparently are following and why they - she said they can’t help me! /But once more being in public place especially hospital I don’t care if for pets or humans/ basic human rights is to help one another and I was left to go home!Very very sad and disappointed!I would post pictures of my injuries but not sure how to attach images! By evening now not just scratched back but also bruising all around!
Confident. The University of Florida Small Animal Hospital is a full service, state of the art veterinary facility rivaling most hospitals for human patients. The doctors and staff are professionals that care for our pets and are empathetic to people. My pet has had the best care available. This has been very comforting throughout Emergency, Intensive Care and Surgery.
OUR DOG HAD ITS ONLY EYE REMOVED SO THEN THE AHEM doctor SAYS THIS POOR CREATURE MUST SUFFER EVEN MORE AND WEAR THE CONE OF SHAME UPON REALEASE. THE DOG WAS GROGGY AND SEDATED THERE WAS NO NEED FOR TCOS AS SHE DOES NOT HAVE ANY GUMPTION BUT OH WE MUST PUT THE CONE OF SHAME ON THIS POOR POOR DOG BECAUSE APPARENTLY SHE HASNT SUFFERED ENOUGH. GO NOLES
My dog was admitted through ER and then transferred to the Internal Medicine care. I was given 3 updates every day (3.5 day stay) and was always asked whether I had more questions. It is a teaching hospital so you will speak with a student, but youll also speak with the doctor at least once per day. They were patient with all of my questions and ONLY performed the necessary tests for diagnosis and treatment. When I asked whether a CT Scan would be relevant given a finding, the response was the contrast medication would be hard on his kidneys AND it would not change the treatment. WOW....evidence based medicine being practiced vs the for profit hospitals and get as many diagnostic tests as you can...how refreshing! Yes, they want the deposit up front, BUT their charges are significantly less than you will find at a Blue Pearl or other specialty hospital. He received excellent care and I will be keeping the IM in the loop going forward with my primary care vet. WAY worth the 1.5 hr drive each way for me vs the nearer Blue Pearl hospital. Hopefully I will never have to go back, but I will make the drive, if I do. High quality, caring and very smart (top 10 in the country vet school).
I was a bit disappointed with this facility considering that it is part of UF. I had taken my dog there one Sunday night because she had peed a little bit of blood and had shown signs of having a urinary tract infection. I called ahead and they said to go ahead and bring her in and they would check her out. I have never been to an emergency vet before so I had this idea that I would be able to talk to the vet and see them examine my dog. Wrong. I got there at 8 PM, and I did not leave until roughly 1 AM, spending 5 hours in my car since they did not allow people to wait inside the facility. I understand that there were other pets there with greater concerns which is why the timing is not what bothered me. What bothered me was that they ran a series of expensive exams which cost over $300 except for the one thing I came there to have them do: a urine culture. Convenient they left that out huh? It is the simplest and cheapest test out of all the test conducted on her, but they claim that their facility does not do urine cultures and that I needed to make an appointment with my local vet to get one. I wish they had simply told me that they would not do a urine culture FIRST so that I could have had her checked Monday morning at a “local vet” who would do so. Funny part is that even after all their exams, they said they could not come to any conclusion as to why she peed blood. I wonder why. I don’t think I’ll be taking my dog here again since she is not a guinea pig for vet students.
Avoid at all costs.UF small animal hospital is nothing more than a greedy, self-entitled, incompetent veterinary hospital. We took our cat, Archie, here for an emergency Opthalmology appointment due to his third eyelid swelling so much it was coming out of his eye. We waited 2 hours to even be seen and another 4.5 hours to get our cat back to us because they forgot to call us while we waited in our car. I can understand long waits because it wasnt a scheduled appointment. However, I can not understand why they did not even do a basic exam of him, such as listening to his heart, looking at his weight, etc, yet charged us $500. Thankfully we took him to All Cats (who has been amazing since we started going there 4 years ago) for his follow up. Not only did they not charge us for any exam (only some probiotics), they actually listened to his heart and discovered he had developed a grade 4 heart murmur. I know if we had taken him back to UF we would never even know about it until it was too late. We went back to ask why they didnt do the general basic exam every vet does (providing the cat is stable), and they said we would have been charged for an additional exam fee.
I don’t know how to sing their praises enough. After having my ferrets life written off by a money-hungry emergency vet in Davenport, we made the two hour drive to UF where we were greeted with a super compassionate and friendly staff. The facility is impressive and is truly like a human hospital. The can-do attitude coupled with the astounding level of expertise guided my 2 year old ferret through foreign body obstruction surgery without a problem. My baby survived because of their willingness to give her a fighting chance.I can’t believe she survived this, and I don’t know how to thank their outstanding work enough. If you have a small animal that gets written off by vets unfamiliar with them, please come here. They really care and they can really help.
We took our 1 year old puppy to UF for a life-saving heart operation to open one of his valves that was only working at 50%.The staff their are exceptional and really love their job and helping animals. The facility is excellent and up-to-date with the latest equipment. It isnt cheap but the work they do is expensive so there must be a cost landing somewhere. We would choose to go back here with him for any heart issues in the future, despite the 2.5 hour drive.
I took my cat yesterday so that they could take care of him and they cared more about the money than providing my cat with a study I was willing to pay, but they preferred to see the cat suffer than to help him, they only gave me pills and in the morning my cat died 😥😭 no take your animals there
I had a pet emergency (first time) where my 16 yr old cat had a stroke (although I didnt know that at the time). Was very scary and traumatic for me to see him in the condition he was in. I rushed to UF vet med having never been there but knowing they performed emergency services. My cat was taken back right away, examined and the decision to make him in-patient was decided. He was there for 3 nights and 4 days and received the most excellent care. I received calls and updates twice a day from both the students working with him as well as the Dr. They led me through every step of what needed to be done and how he was doing. I could tell they sincerely cared about my pet and wanted to do everything they could to get him better. They were honest and upfront about the cost of everything and never made me feel like I had to be pushed into any test or procedure my cat needed. I always knew and felt I was in control. Although it was touch and go for the first couple days, my cat has pulled through and is now home with me doing very well. I know that the reason he is alive still is because of the knowledgeable expert care he was given at UF vet med. I trusted them implicitly with my cats life and they delivered. I am so impressed with this place and thank Dr. Porter from the bottom of my heart for taking such good care of my cat. Also Marlynne the student that I dealt with was super amazing and knowledgeable and was a very impt part of the process and I appreciate her so much. Cant say enough about this place!
We had a medical emergency with our fur baby on a late Saturday and was referred to UF because it was the weekend and our vet was closed. We expected to have to pay more with it being weekend maybe $1000 but never expected the doctor to tell us $5000! I just broke into tears because there was no way we could afford . The vet talked to us like we didnt understand it was life or death .Of course we knew this but how can someone that cares about animals humans anything but MONEY expect average pet owners to pay $5000. We all have jobs and need to make money but this was unbelievable. We left with our dog just praying she would make it till Monday morning . She made it and we got her to our Veterinarian a man with compassion and professionalism Dr Hagler in Lake City at Columbia Animal Hospital. He saved our fur baby and for not even 10% of what UF wanted. Thanks Dr Hagler, Denise Greene and the rest of Staff at Columbia Animal Hospital. To sum it up we love our dogs like kids but unless we were wealthy we could not save our baby at UF because apparently its all about money there!
They saved my baby louie pomeranian after spending 1000s at another vet in Jax fl I rushed him from jax to uf they are the best vet ever also were 1/2 the price of the vet in jax If you can get your baby to them go they have the best technology there and they will do everything possible to save your animal I will only take my dogs there and its over a hr away but 110% worth it.THANK YOU UF VETS!!!!!!!
My 12 year old male Maltese was taken to the local ER vet hospital 4 times due to labored breathing which then turned into syncope. The first visit, they diagnosed him with aspiration pneumonia and was discharged on antibiotics. 2 days go by and his symptoms are worsening so took him back to the local ER vet and then they said it’s still pneumonia that’s spread on both lungs. Some time passes by and the critical care doc is consulted who clarified that it’s not pneumonia and it’s HF exacerbation (pulmonary edema). He was then admitted overnight. Discharged next day after several doses of lasix and was sent home on a high dose lasix of q8h. He appeared still ill and symptomatic with a RR above 40. Suddenly he would collapse after each dose of lasix - would urinate and defecate himself too. At this point, my husband and I had no idea what to do - was debating whether this meant it’s time to let him go/no more suffering. Finally decided to take him back to the ER one last time to see if it’s an electrolyte imbalance. Labs came back normal. The ER doc was honest with us and admitted they weren’t able to diagnose him appropriately and recommended to take him to UF Vet that night instead. We drove to Gainesville that night and got him admitted at the UF Vet ER at 1130pm. ER doc once again said it’s likely HF exacerbation based on a brief ECHO. They ended up consulting cardiology that night and the on call cardiologist came in at 2am to further evaluate him. He was then appropriately diagnosed with pulmonary HTN and given proper treatment. The UF vet team made sure to update us about his status and what was being done (including how receptive he was with treatment). We’ve never seen him bounce back so well after a hospitalization like this. He’s been energetic with good appetite (it’s like he’s back to being 5 years old again)We’ve never been so thankful and blessed to have had such an amazing team care for him. Dr. Rivera saved his life and is absolutely amazing!! We were so impressed with how thorough their evaluation was (assessed for underlying etiology) and he even came out to meet us in person at discharge. UF Vet went above and beyond and we truly believes it’s worth the 3 hour drive to continue our care with them.
Amazing care and staff. We always feel confident referring patients.
We took our Boston Terrier, Sir Princeton, to the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital in Gainesville after he had gone through several tests with a local ophthalmologist and from there a local neurologist. We were heartbroken to find out that he had been diagnosed with a pituitary brain tumor. We were told that we should get him into the UF Small Animal hospital as soon as possible. At the UF Small Animal Hospital, we were told that Dr. Keijiro Shiomitsu would be treating him and that his next available appointment would not be for 3 weeks. During the 3 week waiting period, our dog became weak and suddenly went completely blind. This all happened so quickly; and, on top of that, it was on a Sunday. We took a chance by sending an email to the doctor. He responded promptly and asked us to bring him in that day. The doctor informed us that they would expedite his tests the following day.It turned out that he would need to have several small doses of radiology for the next 4 weeks. During this time, Dr. Keijiro Shiomitsu and his staff were excellent. They kept us informed before and after every procedure. He, also, would email us when Sir Princeton was home to check on him and thoroughly answer any questions we had.Sir Princeton is doing better than ever. Seeing again, chasing his ball and barking at the other animals in the neighborhood. We highly recommend the UF Small Animal Hospital. It was such a miracle, at a time when we thought we may lose our dog to this horrible disease. The compassion and care provided came from the top down and we could not be more grateful. The Guastella’s on behalf of Sir Princeton
HORRIBLE SERVICE!!! VERY RUDE WORKERS! 0/10 would not recommend!
First of all, the phone either would keep disconnecting on me or no one would ever answer. I sat in the parking lot for 4 hours without anyone giving me a timeframe and finally decided to go home. Thank gos, because no one called me to pick her up until 4am and they sounded surprised I didn’t answer. They kept trying to insist on giving my cat pills to take home even though I explained I’ve tried everything over the years and can’t get her to take pills whatsoever and usually end up injured in the meantime. They won’t accept payment plans and expect everything right on the spot and weren’t very helpful when I told them the estimate was more than what’s in my bank account. They didn’t even wrap my cat’s wound, and sent me home with the cone to put on myself with no instructions. So then I had to rush back and have them put it on. The guy on the phone was clearly who’d just sent me on my way ten minutes prior and pretended he didn’t know who I was? And they told me they could put it on “free of charge”. Lmao you gonna charge to put a cone on usually?? By the time I got home again she had the cone off, so clearly not a job well done. Oh and they kept referring to me as a woman even after I told them I wasn’t...not worth the ridiculous sums of money they ask for. They must only want to help people with pets who are wealthy. Which is ridiculous because we all know UF is loaded.
They saved my dog’s life. They quickly diagnosed him with leptospirosis and he was in the ICU for a week. I got daily updates and they got him home as soon as possible. A week later, he is healthy and back to normal. What was a death sentence or life of kidney damage is now nothing. I am so grateful for the doctors and students who saved my child.
Better bring the bank with you they wanted $5000 for a $271 surgery so i was turned away because i couldnt afford it idk how professional they are but thats robbery when they know people love their pets and will do anything for them. Rivaling the human hospital in cost. Im updating this review, my dog i took to uf small animal hospital and was turned away because they wanted $5000. But what really got me is how the dr was telling me if i leave its a death sentence for my dog i mean really trying to sell it saying my dog would die if i left so i prepared for the worst and hoped for the best. i nursed her Saturday night and all day sunday and got her to my vet first thing on Monday he gave her the life saving surgery and she is doing just fine. And it cost $271. How can $271 go to $5000 just because its Saturday Im so disappointed by how i was treated and how they told me my dog would die if i left, but i want them to know she didnt die like they said she would, i guess my point is if you can get out of taking your pet to uf and take them somewhere else do so or youll be robbed but hopefully nobodys pet has an emergency but if you do dont go to uf small animal hospital
I just wanted to drop you a letter to tell you how very much I appreciated the love and care that you showed me and my baby, Dakota. Throughout the chemo process, you all kept Dakota pain-free, for which I will always be so grateful.Your entire staff were always careful to make Dakota feel safe and comforted through all the procedures. People, like all of you, that really show that it isn’t “Just a job” and are so compassionate, make the journey a lot easier. The process of chemo for 6 months allowed me to have over a year with Dakota that I wouldn’t have otherwise had. He went to the Rainbow Bridge on October 7, 2016. Although my heart is broken, I know that he was never in pain during his cancer treatments and had 15 years in which he was very much loved and gave us all unconditional love.I am forever grateful for your extraordinary team and I will forever be indebted to you.Always,Connie KerceFamily of Dakota Kerce6/30/2001 to 10/7/2016
I want to thank the staff at UF emergency vets for the care of my German Shepherd and compassion with us when we had to euthanize him for congestive heart failure at only 4 yrs old. The vet techs and vets were so kind and helpful in a no win situation for my dog. They gave me clear options for how to proceed and care to all of us during a very unexpected time. I also want to thank them for being the essential workers during this time and caring more about the animals than anything else making it quick and painless process for my anxious boy rather than having to wait around vets offices all day. We really appreciated the clay paw print too, so thank you!
Weve been taking our dog here for physical therapy once a week ahead of a surgical consult for high grade hip dysplasia since November. We were referred here by our usual vet specifically for this reason with the firm goal to have the total hip replacement surgery. When we had the consult (which we waited 4 months for), no one had communicated to us that we needed our dog to fast prior to the x-ray and consult, despite calling multiple times over the last few months asking what we needed to do to prepare for the surgical consult. Weve had an x-ray with our family veterinarian that did not require fasting that confirmed the diagnosis initially. We were given a follow up appointment for the next morning, but were switched to a different surgeon without notice in doing so.The new surgeon, Mr. Ferrigno, was incredibly rude on the phone for nearly an hour after the consult, sounded drunk, insisted on pushing an alternative surgery (FHO), which we have already explored, researched, and discussed with doctors. After this incoherent rambling phone call we did not want this surgeon to operate on our dog. When my fiancé reached out politely to the surgeon we initially scheduled our consult with back in November, she received a rude email back, we work as a team with no other explanation or corrective measure. You would think if you were going to pay 6 to 10 thousand dollars for a surgery on your pet you would at least get to have the surgeon you intentionally scheduled it with 4 months prior.
Have always had amazing veterinary care for my fur baby. They are thorough, professional and super caring. Yes, it is a teaching hospital but that is part of what makes it great. Saved my baby many times and I am forever grateful.
ER means emergency. People dont take there dog to the ER and want to wait 24 hrs before they get anything done. Very amateur.
Our Newfoundland was admitted to their ICU and her treatment was 5 Star. Dr Diaz treated her and I Know she received the best care possible. Dr Diaz was compassionate, knowledgeable and talked us through every step of Oreos treatment. Unfortunately we had to euthanize Oreo but thanks to Dr Diaz we had no doubt that it was the right decision.
Awful place to take your pets. Dont recommend them to anyone!
Some of the doctors here give you false hope so that they can have the students use your pet as a guinea pig for training purposes. They are very expensive and I would have thought a teaching hospital would offer more reasonable prices especially since students and interns primarily work on your pets. I would advice other patients to seek out another Animal Hospital such as Blue Pearl where they offer the same services and the prices are more affordable.
I can’t say enough amazing things about the staff & speciality services here. We drive 2 hrs to see Dr. Adin & Dr. Brethel for Dayla’s cardiology appointments. Yes the wait is long but my pets health worth the wait and drive. We went to another specialty cardiologist in Maitland and paid 3x the cost. Just prepare yourself to drop off, clear all appointments from your schedule & stay for the day.Very thorough with medications and timing of meds. I had to wait awhile for meds after her visit so be clear to student via phone that you want all meds sent to the pharmacy so that it’s all ready for when you pick up your animal.
I went there with my female pomeranian that was giving birth with her first litter, but only the sac the baby was in was coming out. I could tell she was in destress and it had been over an hour since labor started. I called ahead and my bestfriend rushed her into the UF Small Animal Hospital with me holding her. They took her back and examined her. They then came out to tell me what the prognosis was and the best thing to do. They told me the price and I about had a stroke,I explained i only had $700 & they helped me so much. Thank God for people who donate. The Good Samaritans paid the rest of the bill for me. I will be donating to then as soon as my place is paid for this time next year.MeRrY ChRiStMaS 2020 !!!!!!
We traveled from Deltona to take our doberman as recommended by our veterinarian. Although our end was not as happy as we would have wanted, the treatment of the staff towards us and our beloved dog was incredible. They were very thorough with the information they presented us with and gave us all the different scenarios. They were warm and supportive during our time of grief. They made our last minutes with our pet unforgettable. I give high praise and send blessings to the entire staff. GOD BLESS THEM ALL. AND THANK YOU
I took my cat there and they sent it home to keep an eye on him and they said they found nothing but then since its really expensive I went to Banfield Hospital and they found his real diagnostic. He had an ulcer in his tongue and he was in a lot of pain. Really disappointed in this place. A lot of money for an inefficient service.
All our pets go to UFL Veterinary Hospital! Best treatment & best outcomes.
This hospital is incredible. They saved my dogs life when he had gastroenteritis. Ive been in medicine for 37 years and only wish they treated humans. Ill never take my baby anywhere else.
The Emergency Service will save your pet’s life in a dire situation by practicing the highest level of veterinary medicine. That said, everything requires an overnight stay and if your animal is not LITERALLY dying, this is not the place you want to go. If your animal does not need to be hospitalized, it doesn’t matter because overnight hospitalization is the only way to get them into the queue for diagnostic imaging. Furthermore, they will charge you for everything they can possibly justify. Here is my case:My very nervous, high stress 10 year old rescue dog presented with neurological symptoms. I tried to get into a Neurology specialist at UF but would have to wait 3 weeks, so to rule out tox or an infectious process (which may get much worse over time if left untreated) I took him to the ER. He had a very minor heart murmur on exam, so to do a chest x-ray (to determine he doesn’t have tumors which hypothetically could be related to his neuro issues because tumors are SO systemic that they would have spread from the chest to the head or vice verse—unlikely as he presented with no symptoms suggesting this was the case) he needs to be put under, but first needs a cardiology consult and get an EKG. In other words, 950$ to rule out tumors everywhere, despite not having ANY abnormalities on blood work or any other indicator of tumors in his chest. With the overnight stay and more testing the next day, another 2500$ but perhaps more. Their approach is extreme- it’s expensive and so beyond logical, careful medicine. They want to rule out every single possibility for every system. Why? Because they can and they know you’ll pay for it because you brought in your animal to get the best care. If you want a dx for the original, presenting complaint in a reasonable period of time (less than 96 hours) for a reasonable amount of money (less than 3-5K minimum), do not bring your animal here. Your time and money are not a consideration in the process- very similar to the US Healthcare System (different in other ways) but that is a rant for another day.
Uf could not find a spine injurie with my dog and their performed multipe test including an mri and the only thing their found is disc issues. Thank you to all the employees at uf for caring and taking you time with our dog. Country you are a great student, respond to questions and are great at what you do. Also to the doctors as well thank you for what you did as well. In other words not sure why the other vet told us why her spine was messed up..?
My cat is receiving care at the oncology department. Dr. Milner and staff are caring, they communicate often with the pet owner, and they are responsive. I am incredibly grateful to them and can recommend them wholeheartedly.
They said that my baby girl had to be euthanized and thanks God we didn’t proceed, we decided to take her home and they refused to prescribe her with any kind of medication to make her feel better, nor they gave us instructions on how to take care of her at home, fortunately we know a doctor in another country and they guided us in helping our baby girl, because of the foreign doctor cant prescribe any medication We only where able to give her chicken broth and Ensure which leveled her kidney vakuesback to normal. Our baby girl is doing great now, fully recovered and as I said at the beginning of this review. thanks God we didnt hear the UF recommendations. When you are a person that decides to make a career as a doctor you cant be a quiter with your patients! If you want your pet to live, stay away from this place.
We drove over 2 hours to get here after having a less than pleasent experience with our normal vet for 48 hours. Thankfully UF was able to find answers within 20 minutes of bringing our dog in, and they called with round the clock updates the entire time. His situation was critical and needed surgery, and they were able to comfort him through the entire thing. The end result worked out in our favor, and they treated him with the upmost care and respect. I will only go here going forward even if it is a far drive and quite a bit expensive. No price can be put on them saving my dogs life. Thank you UF.
Highly recommend. Their level of care is the best in Florida. They saved my dog’s life.
Just brought my puppy home after an overnight stay in the ER/ICU. I experienced great customer service with the guys up front and with the students and doctors I spoke with. Alex at the front desk made me feel better when I was stressing out. Everyone I interacted with was great.I can confidently say my puppy, Darrell, received the best care. Dr. Linder did a great job keeping me informed when he was first admitted. The vet who discharged him, Dr. Wigglesworth, was courteous and kind - she called to check on him hours after discharge and continued to offer empathetic care even over the phone.I will bring Darrell back to UF for his healthcare needs.
Don’t bring your animal here unless you expect to get them back in a casket. I made the mistake of bringing my baby bird here because it was the only place that was help his broken leg and instead of splinting his leg, they put him down. An injury which is never fatal, they killed him over instead of trying to save him. I should have known better to trust college students with my baby birds life because all he was to them was a research subject and nothing more. They made no attempt to save his life. He wasn’t supposed to be a learning experience for you, you were supposed to save his life which is why I brought him to them. You have no idea how much I loved that bird.
This place is amazing..we had to rush our Bailey to UF small animal hospital after she was hit by a car.. we arrived and they immediately took her back. A little bit later they told us that her injuries were really bad and would require extensive surgery. We decided together that it would be best for her if we put her to sleep and get her out of pain. All of the staff were very sympathetic and the doctor was amazing . Thank you so much for helping us through this difficult time . And recieving her little plaster foot prints was so sweet
I took my rabbit here first thing in the morning for an emergency with sudden gastrointestinal issues (anyone w rabbit experience would know its very serious and possibly deadly when not handled QUICKLY)I asked the receptionist on the phone beforehand if they had any experience with rabbits with these issues and if there were people there that could handle that and she said yesIt took them about 5-6 hours to get around to fully examining him (for an emergency!!) after i called them about every hour or so for updates on the situationThis review is not to slander the veterinarian at all (she was an angel with wonderful bedside manner and helped the best she could) but rather the way the whole situation was handled for me and my pet by the technicians/others involved because it didnt seem like there was a sense of urgencyNot sure if the lack of urgency was because my pet wasnt a dog or cat but i *really* hope that wasnt the caseI do not want this to happen to anyone else’s pet, and if i ever had another rabbit with emergency issues i would not take them here
Its insane to call this an emergency vet hospital. Literally took my service dog in as a disabled veteran. They not only stepped on him but ran him into the door taking him back because he couldnt see out of one eye. Filled with a bunch of intern students that have no independent thoughts to help. The vet looked at him the night before after he was sneezing blood and could barely breath out of one nostril. They wouldnt call the radiology person in after hours bc they felt him losing and sneezing blood wasnt life threatening...so where in any world does losing blood or sneezing blood not deam a ct scan or mri to find out whats going on. They told me it could be a tumor..cancer..a polup..internal bleeding, but they still felt it didnt warrant a more in depth ct scan. I dont know how they got accredited as a vetrenarian emergency center but even before you go on they tell you prices..not whats going on with your animal and they try to conveyer belt you thru so they get the most money from seeing so many animals in one day. Next day my sevice dogs eye was completely closed then they told me to come back and said he spontaneously got Horner syndrome within 12 hours of leaving their so called emergency room. Basically this hospital does enough to take your money and then tell you your taking more money for tests that say nothing pertinent and even while I was there they called another patient and told them they forgot to charge the 98 dollars and asked them to pay it over the phone after they took their animal jome..who does that? The vetrenarian talked over me on the phone acknowledged that a tumor might be causing his eye to close and his breathing to shorten, told them he was anxious as well and not eating and still they thought he was OK to go home..so lets see not eating, bleeding from nose, basically being blinded in one eye overnight, shortness of breath, vomiting and being anemic in his blood work didnt seem enough to get a ct scan to find out the actual problem, because the vet said well he looks happy and hes wagging his tail he should be OK. If you bring your animal here you might as well schedule another place because your paying to basically sit in their lobby and pay for the interns air-conditioned lobby..oh yea your required to wait outside even if you wear a mask and cant see the vet directly you just have to trust they physically examined your animal and not just the tech told the vet what they thought it might. Absolutely the worst animal hospital..im not gonna even call it a hospital its a lobby with lazy vets that have all the resources to run needed tests and probably were punished by their professors and have to work on the weekends. And God forbid you need anything after hours thats more than kennel cough. You might as well go to walgreens and ask a pharmacist bc theyll do more than this clinic of non independent thinkers and scared interns will every do for your animal friend. I will be contacting the accreditation and reporting them for negligence if anything happens to my service dog after they saw him. They messed with the wrong marine and my service dog is my lifeline so watch the news as well as this review isnt stopping here.
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL facility. If you need anything for your baby this is the place to go. Up to date research and care available along with every speciality you can think of. Anesthesia, Oncology, Cardiology, Dermatology. All with board certified doctors willing to do everything for your pet but not over charge you with unnecessary things. Many celebrities bring their pets here and some people even come out of the country for their award winning care. And you would think the price is much higher but it is comparable to the clinics in the area. Best place for your furbaby. The Oncology department with their group of technicians and doctors are absolutely fantastic, they are all about making your pets best quality of life and they understand how a diagnosis of cancer can weight heavy on an owner.
Absolutely wonderful veterinary care. We drive two hours to bring our pets here. We have seen several doctors, surgeons, techs, and students. Everyone has been extremely knowledgeable, and caring toward our animals. They have caught several things our local vet missed, including life-threatening conditions. Definitely worth getting a second opinion here if your vet cant treat. We have decided to bring all of our animals here, despite the drive, from now on, unless its something really minor. Thank you UF small animal hospital staff and doctors for caring as much as you do!
These kind folks took care of my chihuahua in her last moments. She was the victim of an attack by a larger dog that escaped my neighbors backyard. The decision to put her down was tough but they made the situation very heartfelt and they truly showed that they cared. They gave us a explanation of her injuries and the options available. In the end these people were very kind in their treatment of both our puppy and us. I appreciate their care greatly. Thank you for taking such good care of my little Neese.
We took our two-year-old bullmastiff Molly into the ER on a Sunday night. On Monday morning, they found that she has aggressive cancer spreading rapidly through her body. We made the decision to put her down. Dr. Ayers with the oncology team was phenomenal! She talked us through everything, answered all of our questions, let us have ample time with Molly to say goodbye, and even got emotional with us. During any tragedy, we have to focus on the blessings, and Dr. Ayers was one of the biggest blessings to us during this time. Thank you UF SAH and especially Dr. Ayers for taking such good care of our sweet girl!
Love this place! Take your pet to UF! Itll be the best thing you ever did. I drive from Merritt Island to bring my pup here (2 1/2 hr drive). They go above and beyond to help. At no cost to me they made a 3d model of my puppy to determine whether she was eligible for surgery. You would not get that at a private practice. They are extremely affordable especially for the quality of care you receive. Im talking thousands less. Honestly. I called 6 places in my area and UF beat all of them. Plus they were refunding me money every time I went in there. They give a high and a low estimate and they were always on the low end AND the cost was always below the deposit. You get a team of people: surgeons, Dr.s, radiologists, techs, teachers, students, nutritionists doing everything by the book working together the ideal way because they are teaching, and using the top medical equipment. Plus they call you at least twice a day to update you on your pets condition. They are amazing!
Our first visit to UF was in April 2019 for our dog who had a mass on his face that had been previously diagnosed as allergies. Dr. Boyd in dermatology has been so helpful with the whole process diagnostic procedures. We got a CT of our dogs head on July 2, on the same day they ended up doing some biopsies as well. I waited for about 12 hours at UF that day for the CT to be completed, biopsies to be taken, and for the anesthesia to wear off before we went home. Dr. Boyd and her student, Trisha kept me very informed the entire time. Explained all the risks of the procedures. Dr. Boyd has been so helpful with pet insurance paper work as well. The dermatology liaison, Kathy is also very helpful and prompt when replying to emails. 10/10 would recommend bringing your pet here.
My cat was referred to the ER by my regular vet after she had a seizure. By the time I got to campus, they took her in and examined her promptly. They walked me and my husband through all of the diagnostic tests clearly, and were wonderfully kind and supportive when she had to be euthanized. They have a separate quiet room where we were able to spend time with her beforehand. Their staff also facilitated funerary arrangements. I really appreciate how well organized and compassionate they were while I was devastated.
Had a very positive experience. Dr and students were helpful and professional. Gave us options, didnt steer us toward expensive procedures. Felt prices were reasonable. Was impressed with facilities. Was above most county hospitals Ive seen.
These folks are the best. Everyone is very professional, including the students, and the building is very nice. Its what a vet clinic should be.
Couldn’t be more happy with the excellent scare and attention, not only that Cooper has received, but that we’ve received. The staff is vets and vets students are dedicated, hard working doctors that seem to work around the clock caring for our pets. The facility is top notch, they have nothing to envy a human hospital. The state of Florida couldn’t have asked for a better hospital for their ailing pets.
My friends dog was bit by a coral snake. I called multiple small animal hospitals before I had to call UF Small Animal Hospital. All the small hospitals spoke with me in length about how to help and then referred me to UF. I called UF and briefly explained my situation to the person that answered. He told me he wasnt trained in that area. So, I asked to speak with someone that was more familiar to try and ask about the antivenom because it is so expensive and if it would even work for his dog. He then said that the doctors arent allowed to speak with anyone until their animal is brought in to the clinic. And also that it would be $130 (give or take, I cant remember exact) just to be seen. I sat there for a second kind of stunned that this was going to be the end of the conversation. And it was. 1 star for at least picking up the phone. Thanks for literally nothing.
Love this place! My dog got spayed here and i was surprised at how thorough they were. She stayed overnight for observations and my vet called me all throughout the day with updates as to how her surgery went. I was very impressed!
We unexpectedly had an emergency with our 14 year old dog Charlie we rushed him here from another vet 2 hours away and they were fantastic to us and Charlie. We ended up losing him however they helped us though everything when we were. Just a wreck. I miss him so much and just yesterday I received a packed from the hospital it was a card and a plaster with his name and paw print on it. It brought me to tears because it was just so thoughtful of them to do this for us and mail it. I never thought of asking for something like this and it shows how caring they are.
I have English Bulldogs which unfortunately come with multiple health issues. UF Shands SAH was the only one willing to treat one of them for respiratory issues needing surgery. I couldn’t have been more pleased (and relieved) to have them treat him. Twenty four hour care and constant communication during their stay, along with multiple hands including drs, residents, students, etc overseeing the treatment on a DAILY basis. Even received text messages with pictures of my pet during their stay. Am currently having my second bulldog evaluated by their team for treatment...wouldn’t go anywhere else even though it’s an hour and a half drive from my home. Well worth it!! Great care and peace of mind keep me coming back!
I took my beloved cat, Olli, to the UF Small Animal Hospital after he had been throwing up, not eating and hiding from me. While we were there, the staff were very attentive and let us visit him multiple times a day. Olli had a congenital hernia and needed surgery, which we were fortunate enough to afford, despite the steep price even with my 10% student discount. I truly trusted everyone I met there, and I don’t fault them for Olli’s cardiac arrest during surgery. They fought to bring him back — pumping his heart by hand for five minutes — but we eventually had to put him down because he couldn’t breathe on his own and was having seizures as a result of brain damage from his heart failure. I am forever grateful that Olli was not in any pain during his last few days, and I am also very appreciative that the staff worked to secure us funding from the Good Samaritan Fund to help cover the hefty bill. The reason I am rating this 2 stars and not more is because the aftercare I have received has been awful. We were promised a clay paw print of Olli and have yet to receive it over two months later. The hospital staff lost Olli’s bright pink carrier — which we received many compliments on while there — despite me sending pictures and reminding them multiple times about it. I have received no information about my remaining balance for Olli’s care bills, and no one has returned my calls, messages or emails about it either. I did receive a check covering the cost of the lost carrier after fussing about it, but the money is less important than carrier, obviously. What really upset me though is what happened after I called today asking about the status of Olli’s necropsy report. I was originally told we would be mailed a copy 8 weeks after Olli’s death. When that didn’t happen, I waited a bit longer and then called to check in. I received a call back from a doctor who I don’t remember ever seeing work with Olli. He walked me through the report details and answered my questions, but the whole time, he referred to Olli by the wrong species — a dog, not a cat. I’m sure it was an honest mistake caused by stress from COVID19, but it came across as very insensitive during such a hard time for me and my family. I love UF and I’m so grateful for the care Olli did receive, but please, for future patients, work on your aftercare a bit.
Visited the UF Small Animal Hospital for an emergency with my cat. They quickly got her back and kept me updated. To be clear, there is a $130 charge upfront for emergency services PLUS diagnostics, meds, fluids, etc. Its expensive but when you have an emergency these are the folks to go to.
I can not say enough about this place! I will never use another emergency vet or specialist. They actually love their jobs and it shows.
The people were very friendly. The cost was reasonable/affordable and they didnt push you to buy things you dont need. The wait time was pretty short too since we called ahead. Very good experience. Vet was Julia wuerz, and I wish I remembered the name of her senior tech who I think may have been a student, but they were both very nice to my cat who is easily scared and thorough in treating him.
I have had two very poor experiences here several years apart in two different departments and will not be returning. I urge anyone considering taking your pet here to reconsider. Blue Pearl or IVS are far better options for your pet’s specialist needs.I had several communication issues with the staff about surgeries and treatments. One of my cats had eye surgery here several years ago and the first surgery failed, even after being reassured several times that surgery would fix the problem. My kitty had to go under general anesthesia twice in one week to fix his problem. They didn’t charge me a dime for the second surgery, because they “felt bad” at all the money I had already spent, but I believe it’s because it truly was a surgeon error. Another one of my cats this past year was diagnosed hyperthyroid and I made the decision to have it treated with the radioactive iodine treatment UF offers. This treatment is supposed to cure hyperthyroidism and supposedly has a very small chance of failure. My cat became hypothyroid after receiving the treatment here and now has to take medication daily, which is what I was trying to avoid with the treatment. I recognize that they informed me of the risk that the treatment could fail. I just have no faith in the doctors or staff here. I’ve brought two of my cats here and both cats have had procedures that have failed and both times the communication before and after the procedures was poor. The tech would say one thing and then the doctor would say another and contradict themselves. Not sure what the issue is here but Blue Pearl and IVS are wonderful.
When you call the number presented it hangs up on you.
I cant thank enough Dr. Michelle and Jessica, thank you so much for all the love and care you gave to my baby Princess, Im from Orlando and I recommend Small Animal Hospital to everyone who wants their pet to receive the best health care; it is worth the drive. Jessica again thank you for all the daily calls and updates. You and your team are AMAZING !!!
We had excellent care and compassion from the entire medical team (attending physicians, residents, and technicians). Our sweet 8 year old boxer dog received thorough emergency care. Sadly, she was critically ill and had to be euthanized. We were so grief stricken but received a lot of warmth and kindness from all of the hospital staff. I would highly recommend this veterinary care facility.
I am sharing this review while the loss of my much-loved 14 year old cat is still raw. The vet and techs who helped us with the sudden decision of how or if to end our babys life--I thank you all and you were kind and loving and gave us all the time we needed even though you were so busy yesterday. She passed in our arms knowing she was cared for and I do thank you. The one thing I would like to say: the young man who was working at the reception desk needs to learn some tact. When we brought our baby in, and a very loving young lady came out from the back to help us with her intake, the young man made a comment about our babys not needing a gurney because its just a cat. The young lady covered for his insensitive comment by smiling at us and saying very gently, This is not just a cat. Who do we have here? Overall recommend for professional and caring staff but maybe frontline receptionists could be trained to be a bit more sensitive and aware.
What an amazing experience! The most polite, professional and thorough group of doctors and staff. Cant speak highly enough. Will recommend them to everyone.
24 hour service .. very nice doctors and staff.. way better treatment than ER for humans .. 4 out of 5 due to WAY to expensive..recommended
So slow, but great staff, they did everything they could to help me
Ive had my rabbit here a few times for treatment of chronic eye issues. Great care from the residents and docs. The appointments take longer than they would at a regular vet, but its essentially a teaching hospital. Just be sure to double-check the medication and/or aftercare instructions you get. Most of the time, theyre pretty thorough but this last time they overlooked a few things.
If you are extremely PATIENT and can wait over two hours to get your pet’s prescription then this place isn’t all that bad 🙄
I took my dog in here at 1 AM after going to 2 different vets and animal hospitals telling me nothing was wrong with my dog, Milo. he ended up having 2 seizures after I got home from the last vet. I called the UF vet hospital in ocala, and they stabilized him so we could drive to the UF small animal hospital in gainesville. let me just say, I have never felt more safe and welcomed into a place. he was immediately taken back into the ICU and had a 2 night stay there, and found out he has encephalitis (inflammation in the brain). the vets, techs, students, and all the other staff were amazing! i was so impressed. we just got home today with our sweet milo, and he is starting to act like himself again. i couldn’t be more thankful to have this animal hospital, and have it within an hours drive! i really believe milo is going to be okay, and he has the right medication and diagnosis. overall, UF small animal hospital is an amazing place to go if you need the medical attention!
The most caring staff ever! Especially Dr. Del Nero and Amanda!
Staff here is super nice and VERY caring. I was quite surprised at the more than reasonable rates for services. Love that they offer integrated care as well as treatment.
Staff is overthetop caring, professional, accommodating! The cardiology department is staffed with very special people.
We had an incredible experience with Dr. Souza and the medical team at the Small Animal Hospital. Our 12 year-old dachshund was diagnosed with an extremely rare adrenal gland tumor but Dr. Souza was intimately familiar with the condition. We went through with surgery and I felt my pet was in the best hands before, during, and after the procedure. Two weeks out and our sweet pet seems to be back to his old self for hopefully many more years to come.My only critique of the experience is that the scheduling and check-out procedures seemed to be an afterthought. We could not get scheduled for an exam and imaging on the same day even if we put a deposit on the imaging time so it was not a waste for the hospital. Surgery was only done on certain days and the scheduling team had no concept of what the medical team was doing or empathy for someone traveling from out of town to line up all of these items to make the stay in town as short as possible for both the pets and the humans. If this could have been handled in a better way the entire experience would have been flawless.Overall, the medical care seemed to be the absolute best we could get in the state and I would recommend you get here if your pets life is on the line.
I cant imagine a more backwards facility. From intake to faulty billing weeks later, my experience was a nightmare. Communication from staff was sparse and unhelpful. My pet was given two procedures accidently that never should have been done. Bloodwork was lost. Answers were nowhere to be had due to difficulty communicating between departments.Do not bring your animals here. They wont recieve professional care and you may be billed much more than discussed after the fact.
How often can you say you are in the absolute best place anywhere to get the help you need? You will be at UF Small Animal Hospital. From the initial contact to discharge review you and your pet will be treated with kindness and respect by the most compassionate and competent people you are likely to ever encounter. My husband and I commuted from Miami so that Dr. Whitley, assisted by the outstanding team members in the Departments of Ophthalmology and Anesthesiology, could operate on our fragile 9-year-old, six-pound Affenpinscher. Everyone we encountered, whether working in housekeeping, the cafe, the clerical department, or the medical department, was friendly, helpful, and seemed deservedly proud to be part of such a dedicated group. Many thanks to all--especially Dr. Whitley, Dr. Boss, Wayne Garcia, Holly and Leah--who helped our angel Chloe and us during a stressful time.
I could have seen a local vet in Lake City but drove down to Gainesville as my dog has a history with UF. She has always had a Wellness Plan and been seen there. She had an eye discharge and the whites of her eyes had turned pink. I pointed out several times that Lake City right now has a very high Weed Pollen count and that I had recently changed her dogfood. I was fairly sure she was having an allergic reaction to one of those issues. My options were to Pay the $130 fee and leave WITHOUT a treatment plan or to let their Opthamoligist look at her eyes and Pay $331. The diagnosis......... Conjunctivitis. It took $403. to get her a very small tube of ointment to treat her eyes for allergies. Shame on them.
They saved my 20 week old bulldog with a never before surgery. They are incredible. Thanks Dr Chapman and the team.
I moved to Gainesville about 2 years ago for graduate school. My puppy started presenting with severe allergies and dermatitis since we moved. I sought for help outside of UF because I believed it to be cheaper and right around the same quality. Not only outside vets were more expensive, but they were not able to help my dog. When I decided to take my dog to UF, the vets were willing to work with me. They spent so much time with me explaining diagnosis and treatment, and they even gave me as many free samples (part of my dogs treatment) as they could to help out a fellow student. They have every specialty in veterinary medicine as we do for humans, they are all heavily involved in research, and they have more accessibility to certain drugs and treatments than other private offices.Overall, these vets are great, very knowledgable, and most likely the ones that taught other vets working around the area. I am extremely happy with my visit to UF and I know my dog is too.
My first experience with the University of Florida Veterinary Hospital was when my dogs rear legs would not move due to a car accident. He needed surgery. He had a team of surgeons, an anesthesiologist and rehab doctor. They contacted me numerous times the day of surgery and the days that he was in the hospital to give me updates. The facility is very clean and the staff is very compassionate. My dog walks now and can move his back legs 90%. He is very happy and loves his rehab doctor, Justin Schmalberg.
