We just left here but the quality of care was so great that i’m writing a review on the way home. we recently added a golden retriever pup to our family and we love him very much, but he was vomiting and had a loss of appetite with other symptoms. We were worried and took him here at 2am and got seen immediately. The doctors, nurses, and receptionist were all great. they were extremely thorough and kept us informed the whole time. They were super nice and made us feel comfortable, they even gave us some dog food to take home to help our little guy be more encouraged to eat. all in all, there wasn’t anything seriously wrong with him and the care was affordable as well. it’s a small price to pay for peace of mind. We thank you, and so does Sunny!
Saw us immediately on Memorial Day for a true medical emergency. They took our cat in right as we pulled up and were helpful and caring throughout the process. Unfortunately the diagnosis wasnt a good one, but VCA SouthPaws guided us and explained all of our options with honesty and understanding. I feel good knowing we did everything we could.
My Lab Barrett was hit by a car Tuesday. We called VCA and they were closing the Emergency room due to overfill. Once they heard what happened and how close we were, they accepted us in. Drs Smolski, Hall and Montgomery were the team that got my sweet boy back to us. Lots of phone calls and updates initially. Then, once he was stable they set expectations on when we would get updates from the nurses and vets. They made arrangements for us to visit Barrett while in their care. His nurse Amber was kind and clearly a friend to my sweet baby. When these things happen it is EXPENSIVE, stressful and full of fears. While natural to want clarity, information and return, we also need to be patient with the people that commit their lives to caring for and saving our furry family members. And, remember that they are also trying to run a business. To have quality staff and veterinarians of this magnitude cost money!!!!! Every day they take upon their shoulders the weight of saving our animals to try and send them home to us healthy or on the mend. Thank you to the VCA Southpaws team. While I hope to never see you again, if I do, I know you will take care of my family to the best of your abilities!!!!!!
My miniature poodle puppy, Jazz, swallowed a scrunchy, and as a first-time pet owner I was frantic. I quickly googled to find the nearest 24 hour emergency vet! I found one place- drove all the way there to realize they couldnt help. Then, ended up at VCA SouthPaws. I pulled up, and within 2 minutes they had taken her back while I simultaneously provided the receptionist with her prior medical information. I was in the car for no more than 10 minutes when I got a call back from the receptionist letting me know that she had thrown up the entire scrunchy (intact). WHEW. Music to my ears. Thank you so very, very much to the staff at VCA SouthPaws! You saved my dog! You all were extremely responsive and worked incredibly fast. You all understand that there was a tight time schedule before the object moved to her intestines, and you all really came through. I am forever grateful! Thank you, thank you! Sincerely, a really thankful dog owner.
I had a great experience with VCA today and am so grateful for their care for my puppy, Pebble. We came here because she had a massive allergic reaction to something (probably ate a bee), and her poor little face was swollen so bad she couldn’t open her eyes. I called to see if they’d be able to fit us in before I left, and they took my info over the phone and got me on the roster. When I got there, they took Pebble back promptly and called me with updates every step of the way. They were very straightforward about pricingand incidentals and communicated clearly. Dr. Morelo had to have been horribly busy, but when she called to update me she took time to answer my questions, explain what was going on, and she clearly was affectionate and caring towards my puppy. I felt very comfortable knowing that the team inside was taking good care of my puffy faced puppy. The price for an emergency exam, two injections, continued monitoring over 4.5 hours, and prescription steroids was half as expensive as I was thinking. I was so worried about going to an emergency vet - hearing horror stories of abrasive doctors and outrageous up charge, but VCA dispelled those fears and I am so happy to know we have a great emergency option nearby!
Last weeks visit with the Veterinarian (Dr. Brehm) went well, you can tell hes very knowledgeable.A couple days later the condition of my dog severely worsened, so I reached out to VCA Southpaws via email on Saturday. As of this Tuesday I had not received any communication, so I called and was directed to a voicemail box. As Southpaws (2 minute long) voicemail box recording requested, I left a detailed message leaving my name, my dogs name, reason for calling, and the phone number I can best be reached. The voicemail box states they monitor messages left daily and during business hours.Wednesday goes by and I do not receive a response or communication of any kind. I call again Thursday and am again directed to a voicemail box. As I did on Tuesday, I left my name, my dogs name, reason for calling, and my phone number, and state the severity of my dogs condition and that I urgently need to speak with Dr. Brehm.Same as before, I receive no response or communication. My dogs condition is not improving, so I call again this afternoon and reach a receptionist. She says that I was scheduled for a call-back today (was not communicated to me prior to this call), and that I would be hearing from the doctor, but that she will confirm. I am placed on a ten-minute hold, then the receptionist confirms that I will be receiving a call absolutely no later than 20 minutes. It has been over three hours since that confirmation, and I have not received a call from the doctor. It is a shame, because the knowledge of Dr. Brehm is clear as day, and I felt comfortable knowing that my dog would be in good hands with him. However, the lack of communication and complete failure to follow through on multiple guarantees by VCA Southpaws is jarring and completely unprofessional, especially given their reputation of being a first-class operation. While others may swear by VCA Southpaws, my experience has been a colossal disappointment and I will likely take my dog to one of the other reputable pet hospitals in the area (Columbia Pike, Hope, Town & Country, etc.)
Was very disappointed with my visit. Brought my dog here as recommended by my vet (Caring Hands Clarendon) for vomiting and diarrhea. I was told one price by the doctor and charged another by the receptionist. She took my credit card information and charged my card without reviewing the new grand total. I called more than five times to confirm my email address, was re-assured it was the correct email and that an invoice was sent. After several calls, found out my name was in fact misspelled. The documents I requested were not sent. I received and invoice with no discharge instructions. Five calls later, I had a bill larger than I was told, and a dog who is still vomiting and having diarrhea. Very unhappy and dissatisfied with the service here.
Dr. Mullally was incredibly rude and unprofessional to me and was giving me attitude while I was simply asking questions on the status of my dog. She needs to be fired and learn how to be respectful and actually give good customer service. She charged me $300 just to tell me to follow up with my primary vet, she provided nothing. I’ve never encountered a vet that was so unprofessional and extremely rude. She does not care for the animals or the owners whatsoever. If you come here, avoid her at all cost and go with any of the other doctors they have in the facility. I only went here because I’ve took my dog here before and the doctor was great, I wish I remembered his name, but this time around I was provided possibly the worst vet here named Dr. Mullally.
My dog became suddenly very very sick. She collapsed with white gums and I took her to southpaws. Her vitals tested normal but Dr Smolski felt like it was a good idea to get her blood tested. Results came back anemic and she stayed in the ER for emergency blood transfusion and we started investigating. I was referred to internal medicine with Dr Neiman as we started running more tests. I was called back when they said they would call back, I was told about worst case scenarios upfront, and the nurses, doctors, and front desk answered every single question I had and were extremely kind.My dog loves to go to southpaws. She gets excited to see the technicians and they all love seeing her. She got better, thanks to the expertise and meticulous testing of the staff. You saved my dog’s life. And I thought about it too, if she wasn’t able to come home - this would still be a 5 star review. I can rest assured I can rely on excellent emergency care for my pet just a few minutes away. Thank you all so much for what you do!
I have mixed feelings about this place. First, let me say that my pup has a very unique problem and so the surgical outcome was tenuous at best. That isnt the why I have chosen to write this. Trying to reach the surgical scheduler Alex, has been absolutely frustrating. I am writing this the day before a second surgery and still have no idea of the cost, the time he needs to arrive, or if he will be staying over night. I have called 4 times this week; When he became very ill (not as a result of the surgery) I have to say that, in an emergency situation, this place ROCKS! The emergency vets were absolutely awesome! So all in all, if you have an emergency, I cant recommend more highly. For routine type of treatments or surgery, hands down I am staying at Pender with a shout out to Dr. Voell and Dr. Hyatt two of the best veterinarians that have treated many of our family dogs/animals for well over 15 years.
This hospital is a scam. I took my dog there yesterday for a UTI and received no help at all. I arrived at 9am on Sunday morning, was on hold for 20 minutes before I was able to even tell anyone I was there and then waited another 20 minutes for a tech to come get her. We were told there wasn’t a long wait for the emergency room so we decided to wait in the car. It was over 2 hours before we heard from anyone again, while my poor dog was just sitting in the back in a crate by herself. The doctor told us she didn’t think it was a UTI and she wanted to run blood work as well as a UA, which was fine, she told us it would be “a few minutes” before a tech could take blood. Another 2.5 hours later we call and say forget it we can take her to her primary if it’s going to take this long, and magically they finally have time to take her blood and urine (for $300!!). After 5 hours they finally release our dog to us with no medication and no answers!! Why did you need my dog for 5 hours to take 1 vial of blood? We ended up paying $450 for them to tell us “follow up with your primary”. This would have been more acceptable (barely), but every time we called to check on her status, we were lied to and told it would be “just a few more minutes”, there was no communication between the staff and us as owners. Such a scam. Do not take your pet here, god forbid it’s a real emergency.
I called this vet to seek support for an emergency eye issue that my dog was encountering. They did not have an ophthalmologist on call, but they recommended two other emergency vets that could help. I highly recommend, as they listened to me blubber in fear and pointed me in the right direction.Thank you so much!
I could not be more grateful to Dr. Boostrom and the entire SouthPaws oncology team. My dog Billie was diagnosed with oral melanoma by our vet, and I came to SouthPaws in a serious state of panic. It was such a relief to speak to Dr. Boostrom, who explained all aspects of the disease and offered several treatment options, answering all my questions along the way. When I shared I was moving in two months, he built a plan that would allow Billie to get all the necessary treatment in time. Every time Billie came in, the vet tech team greeted her with such love, youd think she was a movie star. The vet techs gave me a thorough run-down at the end of each treatment on how things went and what to expect next. The receptionists, the billing department ... everything worked smoothly and effortlessly. I felt supported every step of the way.Billie is sleeping off her last radiation treatment as I type. It remains to be seen how her disease responds to the treatment, but I am certain that she got the best possible care.
This place was straight and to the point. I do wish their front desk staff was a bit friendlier. I also had to call back to request my cats blood work be sent to me so I can give it to her regular vet and the staff seemed annoyed. They helped my cat feel better. All in all. They said her liver enzyme was slightly elevated and could be due to possible hyperthyroidism. My question is why couldn’t they test for that as well? Instead said to follow up with regular vet and explore more blood work. More money again. The one thing I’m highly irritated with is that they gave me a prescription that I cannot fill for my cat same day and I was told start it immediately. I can fill at Walmart but have to wait a few days I believe. I called 3 other pharmacies and no luck. Not cool.I hope I never have to take my pets to an ER again and if I do, I’m not exactly sure if I’d come back here.Update : the prednisolone was 200 dollars for 15 days. Walmart pharmacist told me to return the script because it was ridiculous. The other one was 44 dollars and I luckily got it down to 15.Don’t prescribe medication that you are going to have a hard time filling. And then when you do: it’s 200 bucks for 15 days?Update number 2: I received a call back from the doctor and he greatly apologized about the prescription and said they have it in house for 25 bucks. So, I feel better about the whole thing. Thank you for helping my cat. And bring prompt with returning my call regarding the prescription.
So grateful to Dr. McGee, Hector and all the rest of the staff that helped to save our sweet boy, Koda. We appreciated the affectionate care and effort you showed him as I know he can be quite the handful. Even when we had to go the route of surgery, we were still updated every few hours on how he was doing and what our options/next steps would be. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
The team at SouthPaws took care of our sweet Ladybug. She (and us humans too) was treated with quality care and affection. We called to check on her during the day and in the middle of the night. They always responded with care. To Dr. Silva, Hayley, Mylea, and the entire team at SouthPaws, thank you for your compassion and support during a difficult time. We are so grateful that ladybug was given such great care and compassion.
SouthPaws was referred to us by our primary care provider for our dog Bambi. Dr. Abato was kind, intelligent, and to the point. She is exactly the type of person you want to be managing your pet when tensions are high and your pet needs help right away. She kept us informed and updated throughout the day and recommendations for further treatment. I would recommend coming to this place first as they can perform emergency ultrasounds which is something many of the urgent care centers will not perform.PS Bambi is ok :)
After a very difficult surgery to remove a brain tumour, my dog needed to follow up with an oncologist. Unfortunately, my surgeon was far away and I was left to find an oncologist on my own. South Paws oncology screened my dog and told me that my surgeon was mistaken and that my dog could not be helped by radiation. They dont know what they are talking about. They added that his tumour would grow back in 6-9 months and that was that he would probably die from that. I sent their report to my surgeon at Bush Neurological and he was outraged. He reached out to colleagues and directed me to a new oncologist with a much better bedside manner who provided me with a correct radiation follow up for my dog. I asked for a refund as SouthPaws performed an expensive blood screening and received none. Very disappointing that they refused to do the correct thing. I have been a dog owner most of my life and know that not all doctors are equal and not all services have integrity. Do your research.
Dr. Brock McGee has a very bad attitude. I would not recommend anyone to have their animals seen by him. For the price the quality of my experience was subpar.
These doctors nurses and staff are amazing and super patient. Our dog is being treated for lymphoma and hes doing really well thanks to their knowledge, skills and basic human decency. They do exceptionally well with grumpy clients too (the humans).Using their patience resolve and professionalism.(Its me. Im grumpy clients).Highly recommend !
Our beloved dog Winnie became critically ill and we needed to transfer her to a critical care facility. The transferring facilitys Dr ensured the SouthPaws Team had all the information as to what was going on and to expect us. We were also (understandably), told because of COVID we would not be able to go in and that once we arrived, we would need to call and wait for the team to bring our dog in. When we were driving to South Paws, our dog became unresponsive. As we were pulling to the front entrance, I called and before I could even explain everything, the team had her on a stretcher and we were allowed to come right in. Dr McGee was the veterinarian on at the time. He was incredibly kind when informing us of our options, as we needed to make some very difficult decisions. He provided us with information, guidance and time for our family to make the best decision(s) for our beloved dog. We are grateful to the team at SouthPaws for their care.
I felt the internal vet was not listening to me. Hard to reach and talk to. They gave my dog a very high dose of steroids that I asked many times to ween her off. 30 mg for 33 pound dog. I truly believe we lost her in the end because of this. Go with your gut and if something seems wrong demand it be stopped. Completely heartbroken.
While Southpaws was not able to save our dog Winston, he received excellent care from Internal Medicine staff from the minute we dropped him off. We were fully informed of both his treatment plan and estimated costs throughout his evaluation. We especially appreciate the vet techs and Dr. Hoch, who did everything they could to make him comfortable and get him healthy. Our regular vet recommended Internal Medicine at Southpaws to investigate anemia. We took advantage of an appointment option that allowed Winston to be seen quickly, in just a few days, if we agreed to leave him at Southpaws before 9 a.m. and the doctors would examine him throughout the day, as time allowed depending on emergencies. A benefit to this type of “appointment” was, if additional services were recommended, we could approve it over the phone and he could receive them the same day. After each exam or diagnostic service, Dr. Hoch called us to explain the results and presented us with options based on that information. She explained everything until we understood it. If we had questions in between these calls, we could call internal medicine and talk to a vet tech who would answer our question or have Dr. Hoch call us back. By the end of the day, Winston had a diagnosis and was scheduled for surgery the next day.We were allowed to visit Winston that night, despite Covid, which was really nice. We had been talking with one vet tech all day, but we were greeted by a different (night shift) vet tech when we visited. She was awesome. She was fully aware of Winston’s day and his treatment plan; she even knew when he had eaten. In surgery, they saw that, due to its location, removal of the tumor would be difficult without substantially reduced quality of life. Winston would not be expected to live long. Dr. Hoch called us during the surgery to give us this information and provide us with a range of options. There was no pressure to make any particular choice, and there was no judgment when we decided he should be euthanized rather than have to endure a recovery process which would likely never result in him feeling better. Southpaws also works with a cremation service, which delivered ashes in a memorial urn with a plaster paw print. We are grateful for the compassionate and excellent care our dog received.
The most rude and unprofessional vet I have ever used. Would not recommend to anyone.
We took our puppy here after she had a reaction to eating a toxic plant. They were extremely professional, kind and expedient. They kept in frequent contact with us and were upfront about associated costs and asked our permission before proceeding with the various tests and treatments. Would definitely return if we had another emergency and would recommend to other pet owners.
The staff are professional and courteous and Dr. Neiman is wonderful! I brought my beloved 9-year old cat Sophie in due to chronic kidney disease and lack of appetite. Dr. Neiman was extremely thorough in examining Sophie, very knowledgeable and explained options and next steps. She also prescribed an appetite stimulant and after just one dose my girl is eating like a champ!VCA is very organized and the staff are kind and courteous. I was kept informed leading up to my appointment, received all of the advance paperwork and they ensured all of Sophie’s records were received from our regular vet. Dr. Neiman reviewed her files prior to our visit and recapped her understanding of the situation and Sophie’s status. I’m so happy I made the decision to bring her here. The only reason I did not give it five stars is because I had to leave her there for an ultrasound and was told 2-3 hours tops. After three hours I had to call two times to get an update on her status only to find that they were running woefully behind for ultrasounds. I understand that this is an emergency hospital and that critical patients should receive top priority, however they should have managed my expectations better by letting me know that it could extend longer than three hours. And more importantly someone should have called to let me know they were running late. Regardless I would absolutely recommend VCA and am so grateful to Dr. Neiman and the staff.
Excellent care, friendly staff and very knowledgeable Drs. They have just about any type of care you pet might need all in office. It is always very bright and clean and cute decor throughout. Dr. Brem is very experienced with bully breeds and their breathing issues and was wonderful to work with for soft palate/nate surgery for our Frenchie. He received wonderful care. Would highly recommend this office especially if you have any of the brachy breeds.
My dog’s been seeing Dr. Bromberg, a great eye doctor, for a couple of years and today’s the last day because she’s retiring. So sorry about that.
We had the most disturbing experience with SouthPaws 10 days ago. Our dog went in for diarrhea and vomiting he had experienced the prior night. What started out as something seemingly NOT out of the ordinary, turned into them wanting to perform surgery (for an apparent obstruction), multiple organ issues (liver, kidney, pancreas, pnemonia), and euthanasia (!)- all within less than 8 hours of his arrival. The two doctors that looked after him clearly made a poor diagnosis and prognosis, didnt take a proper action to help our dog, but overly medicated him, which contributed to his mis-diagnosis. After hearing those shocking verdicts, we opted to take him home against medical advice. The following day, we took him to our vet where they were able to help him: he passed this obstruction, his blood levels improved significantly, and he is his old self again. We’ve taken all of our dogs to SouthPaws over the years, however after this experience we don’t have the confidence that they can provide the level of care we were used to having. And we are questioning the competency of the doctors looked over out pet. Clearly, it was all just outrageous charges and no service. Think twice before go there for help!
Thank you to VCA for taking great care of my fur baby for the last year during her battle with Lymphoma. Appreciate you all!!!
My senior dog needed an ultrasound and x-rays. He was seen by Dr. Matthew Gutman. Dr. Gutman was excellent. He was patient, informative, and kind. I got the impression that he not only knows his stuff, but also genuinely cared about both my dog, and about my own feelings as a worried pet owner with a beloved senior dog. I highly recommend him. Also, I was referred to Southpaws. The practice as a whole was recommended to me by my dogs usual veterinarian as being both good for diagnostics and emergencies.
They worked us in for diagnostic imaging within 24 hours after referral from VCA Alexandria. The internist was very sensitive to the situation and took care to share very bad news in a clear and thoughtful way. If your pet needs care beyond any of the basic stuff like vaccines, dentals, and annual exams, spend the extra money and take them straight to an internist.
I cannot say enough good things about Southpaws ER and Dr. Smolski. My dog (large German Shepherd mix) fell extremely ill very quickly. He was sent here for what our Vet thought could be a mesenteric torsion that required emergency surgery. Dr. Smolski saw our dog right away upon arrival, got him hooked up with IVs of fluid and medication and ran some tests. He was frequently in touch via phone as we waited nervously in our car (Covid protocol). He was not convinced our dog had a torsion and wanted to do a sonogram and another X-ray following two or so hours of medication and fluid. Both showed improvement. Many doctors may have rushed to exploratory surgery, but he took the time to make sure he was doing right by our dog and treating the actual problem. Our dog was admitted and Dr. Smolski called throughout the day and night updating us on how treatment was going. We were allowed to visit our dog during his overnight stay and everyone was so kind and gentle with him and us. Dr. Smolski walked us through everything in person while we were there and answered any questions we had. Discharge papers were very detailed and Dr. Kwong (who oversaw our dog’s care next day) answered every question I had over the phone and did not rush me at all. After a week of medication, my dog is much better and recovering very well. I would not hesitate to return to Southpaws. Thank you so very much Dr. Smolski!!
Over the last few weeks I have spent many hours in the Southpaws parking lot (thank you Covid...). The treatment, care and love they show to every animal (and their humans) is remarkable! I feel very lucky to have this amazing hospital, and two amazing oncologists, taking care of my pup while working through a very stressful time in life.
We have used VCA Southpaws for just about the past two years for our english bulldogs ophthalmological issues. I cannot tell you how much anxiety and dread would come over me every time I would have to go see Dr. Nancy Bromberg. She is, absolutely, the worst and most unprofessional veterinarian I have had the displeasure of working with.Bulldogs are notorious for their recurring health issues and anyone with a bulldog would know that it is often like pushing a boulder uphill, especially in the summer months. On each visit I was made to feel like bad pet owner because of the persistence of his eye issues. We have given him four eyedrops, twice a day, for the past 8 months to no avail. We had the poor pup scheduled in for double-eye surgery tomorrow. After no less than a half-dozen calls trying to clarify the billing range we were given, we authorized the lower figure and told them to let us know if they needed more payment once the surgery was completed and more costs incurred. They mistakenly charged us $1,600, which was about $83 less than the lower figure on the range (the higher figure was ~$2,000). Dr. Nancy Bromberg then promptly called back to accuse my wife of trying underpay and blamed us for what was obviously a clerical error. She then abruptly cancelled tomorrows surgery and told us sarcastically to start over with another ophthalmologist before hanging up the phone. We were absolutely floored. Cooper has growths on either eye that are causing him pain, and after waiting for this surgery date (tomorrow) we now have to start over entirely somewhere else. My dog is now needlessly suffering due to Dr. Nancy Brombergs childish unprofessionalism. I am furious with her callousness. I hear she is retiring next week. Good riddance to her. She took a gross pleasure in hurting my pet today. It is no wonder VCA has a 3.7 rating.DO NOT RISK YOUR PETS HEALTH AND WELL-BEING HERE.Do a quick search and find somewhere better to take your loved ones.
One of the best emergency rooms/vets Ive been to. My pet has always been well loved and taken care of by the vets, nurses, and vet techs.responsive on phone calls, call backs, and provide as much information as possible and answer all my questions! They are so patient and kind in a very stressful time.more info:Unfortunately my pup had a small bowl obstruction and then pneumonia in the span on 2-3months. Both times I brought my dog to this location and each time the front was very professional and helpful, the techs provided as much information as possible, called with updates frequently, and explained what would happen each step away.I cannot speak highly enough of the veterinarians. All of the vets (and surgeons) I have had the pleasure of working with have been exemplary! They are so informative, return calls quickly, provide clear concise information and it really feels they have the best interest of your pet. They did not try and take my money or spend more without me knowing. I voiced my concerns about cost and they were very helpful in providing and estimate and also let me know if things we could hopefully do without to bring the cost down. The vet also helped me with PAWP (a horrible insurance club who refused to pay for my visit - after they had already told me they would pay) and the vet took the time to call and help me as much as possible. My friend has also called this location for advice on her dog and she said each time they have been great and very helpful and did not charge for any advice!I seriously cannot say enough! Thank you everyone at VCA southpaws.**I am a pet owner. I have no affiliation with this group. I am a real reviewer (who infrequently leaves reviews but theyre too good and deserve 5stars)
First time taking our dog there on a Friday night after he swallowed an entire corn cob! They were super responsive over the phone and got him in a room immediately. The corn cob was quickly dealt with and we were back home relatively quickly. Thank you!!
I sat in my car the other night for 5 hours in the cold. I understand that they are an ER and you have to wait that wasnt the issue. It is unacceptable to ask patients to wait in their cars for 5 hours when you only correspond thru the phone anyways. Either let us sit distanced in the waiting room or let us go home and call us. It is not like we can go in and sit with our pets so no idea why we cant leave the premises even to grab a cup of water.
I took my cat to VCA South Paws after he escaped our home and was attacked and badly injured by a large feral cat. This review is for their emergency services and not the normal appointments/vets.My cat is extremely important to me and I was an absolute emotional mess as I was dealing with the situation and worrying that he was not only suffering but also might not survive.COVID has forced the clinic to implement several procedures that essentially require pet parents to stay in their cars. This is frustrating but I was appreciative of their efforts to ensure that their staff and patients remain safe and healthy. They took my cat right away and after some time had passed, they let me know his injuries were severe and hed need to be admitted. That was not surprising to me. They told me to go ahead and go home and theyd call me with updates and estimates. The vet on duty called me within an hour or so and they also provided an estimate for the vet care they felt was needed. They advised me hed need to be admitted for some time while they addressed his major injuries and pain. I was given details about his condition and their treatment plan.In the early evening I got another update about my cats status and how the prior treatments had gone. I knew how critically injured he was and it was hard to stay calm but the vets and nurses were kind and thorough as they explained the situation and options to me.My cat had to stay at South Paws for five days and each day I got 2-3 phone updates on his progress, his health and the general outlook. Vets varied by day - all were excellent. After the second day (he wasnt doing well) they determined a brief, masked and glove visit with my cat could be accommodated as they thought it might motivate him toward recovery and in fact, it did help. His positive reaction to my brief visit was overwhelming and with their excellent, compassionate veterinary care he was able to return home at the end of the week.South Paws saved my cats life. Now, lets talk about the bill.Yes, it sucked. It was painful. But the staff had tirelessly provided my cat with 24 hour critical veterinary care for five days including several different procedures to deal with his wounds. They saved his life and gave me frequent updates throughout the ordeal.Thinking of what it would have cost to put a human under 24 hour care for that duration... well, the vet bill seemed more reasonable. Cost was in the neighborhood of $6k and I know they offer Care Credit payment plans for folks who need it.I cant speak to their normal vet services but I wouldnt hesitate to take any pet there for an emergency.Thank you to the vets, nurses and staff for saving him. We appreciate it and we will always be grateful!
I cant say enough wonderful things about the care that my cat received at VCA SouthPaws. Having recently moved to Northern Virginia, I hadnt yet found a new vet. So when my 18 year old kitty had a sudden stroke-like event on a Sunday afternoon, I went into panic mode. SouthPaws was the first place that I found that was open, and Im so glad we ended up there. She ended up having to stay for two nights, and eventually we put her down. But she received excellent care from Dr. McGee and the entire staff there. They were so empathetic and patient with us as we went through this gut-wrenching time. They let us visit and/or call and check-up on the little girl as much as we wanted. They explained everything very calmly, and we never felt any pressure to move forward with expensive procedures...they presented us with all of the options, including the financial implications, up front and let us be the decision makers. Was it expensive? Yes, but so would any emergency medical care be, especially when youre staying for two nights in a facility. I am so grateful for the wonderful care Dr. McGee gave our kitty, and honestly, the care that he gave my husband and I as he guided us through the difficult process of deciding to let her go, including sending a sympathy card after we left. It really meant a lot.
I went to VCA vet services on Braddock road for a second opinion. The way my pit bull and I were treated was amazing. Not only was the staff loving and caring, but they told me about a coupon they had available on their website for the first visit free. Dr. Sherlock was awesome, yet there was nothing he could really do for our Rizzo. He then sent me over to VCA Southpaws off Arlington Blvd. To say that the beside manner is questionable is an understatement. We turn to drs for our family and our pets, who are family. As soon as I walked in the door, the feeling that I had was an uncomfortable one to say the least. As much as I enjoyed the oriental rugs and the furniture that looked like it should be in a living room of someones home, the feeling I got was less than comfortable. We were taken upstairs to see the surgeon, again another room set up as a sitting area in a southern home, then Rizzo was taken from me to be seen in another area without me being with her. The matter of fact way that the Surgeon interacted with me, throwing around 1000.000s of dollars of procedures, i.e 400.00 for a chest xray, 1500.00 for a cat scan, close to 5,000.00 for the surgery .... i saw that I was there to pay for someones mortgage payment for the month of December. THEN when I asked if there was another facility that may be able to be a bit more economical, he mentioned Caring Hands, but they are not board surgeons. what kind of referral is that? smh. So, to make this story come to a close, I paid at the front desk, $100.00 fee, which is fine, but in the chaos of trying to make sure my dog was not going to be aggressive to other dogs standing in the lobby, my credit card was not given back to me. I got to my vehicle, made some quick calls and then I was called by the front desk of the vet office, stating that I forgot my credit card. IT was pouring rain, I asked the girl if someone could run it out to me, and she said no, we dont have anyone that can do that right now. So, I have been in customer service for years and never once did I treat a paying customer like that. Im sure this place is for the Middleburg uppity people, but for the person who is trying to get the care for her dog as best as she can, its not for me. The surgery will be done for Rizzo by another vet local to me and for a MUCH lower price, same excellent care. Please dont respond to this email as if you can make it a better experience. I know the Google people want you to, but it wont make any difference.
I have nothing but great things to say about this establishment. Like wow! They’ve really mastered taking care of their clients amidst these unprecedented times! Love the efficiency. Job well done! We will be back (well, hopefully not, but you get it!)
I want to thank VCA Southpaws and especially Dr. Linh Luong for the compassionate care given to my beloved kitty, Iris. I had never been to Southpaws before when Iris needed help in the middle of the night last week. Her regular vet was closed and the ER attached to her oncologist at the Hope Center was full, so I was relieved that Southpaws could see her, but I had no idea what to expect. She was fighting visceral mast cell cancer and had developed a secondary cancer or condition in her mouth or throat that caused her to stop eating and drinking, and late at night she started bleeding from her mouth. I brought her to Southpaws and after she was taken from me in her carrier, I sat shivering in my car, waiting. I was hopeful that she could be treated with fluids and pain pills and I could bring her home to figure out her next step of treatment or saying goodbye in the comfort and peace of her own home, as I had planned. Dr. Luong soon called me to discuss Iris. She patiently and compassionately listened to Iriss whole medical history and her recent struggles to eat and drink, and then she gently suggested to me that it was time to end Iriss pain. I was not ready to say goodbye, but looking back now, I know it was the right time, and I am grateful to Dr. Luong for helping me to see that taking her home would not be in her best interest. She assured me that I could be with Iris as she was helped out of her pain and to rest. The staff at Southpaws was so kind as I entered the building and was taken to the comfortable room where the arrangements for Iris were made, and then Iris was brought in to me. She was upset, so I held her and spoke my love to her. They gave us as much time as we needed, and I was able to get her a little calmer. Finally I let them know we were ready, and Dr. Luong came in and very quietly gave my sweet girl her final care. It was very peaceful, and my baby was in my arms as she drifted away. Afterwards, they let me stay with her until I was ready to leave. It was probably the hardest thing Ive ever had to do, but I couldnt have asked for any more kindness, compassion and skill from Dr. Luong and the staff at Southpaws in our moment of need.
I normally dont write reviews, but my experience at VCA Southpaws was stellar. I brought my dog here for what ended up being end of life renal failure. The staff was extremely thoughtful, and did not pressure me to jump to the most expensive treatment options on the books. The treatment options were offered, but they seemed understanding to my reasoning to not pursue them. When you are going thru pressure to save what is essentially your child, the last thing you want is feel looked down upon because you cant spend what could end up being tens of thousands of dollars in the process. I felt confident they did all that they could and Im grateful for the limited time I had to spend with my dog prior to his passing. I just want to again thank the staff (specifically Dr. Parquette) for all of their assistance, and thoughtfulness in a very trying time.
My two dogs got into a fight last night (9 year old pitbull and 8 month Stafford mix) and I brought them into VCA South Paw. It was decently late but the staff was very fast, attentive, caring, and efficient. They were also very clear on what needed to be done and about how long it would take. They took very great care of me and especially my fur babies. Shoutout to Dr. Kawecki who did a great job and was very knowledgeable and that whole night staff who were very sympathetic to our incident.. you guys are great!
Overall, decent practice. I’m glad they are here to help our pet.I do not like at all how we have to wait in the car while they take the pets in. I have no chance to talk to the doctor about the issues and concerns I need looked at. So many mistakes can happen without communication. And talking to me after the fact by phone just does not quite cut it.My main Vet allowed us into the facility to speak with the doctor during the exam and it makes such a difference!! At this point, I don’t see why you make us sit in the car when other practices allow the owners in. If we are allowed to walk into a grocery store with a mask on and buy groceries and speak to a clerk while wearing masks, a clicks practice where they wear PPE should be able to handle a limited number of people per day into their facility..
My experience with Southpaw was very positive. Because my sweet dog’s scan was great with positive results, Dr Sloan told me to happily skip out the door and gave me a warm hug. The front staff was very friendly and professional. The sitting area is very pet and people friendly! And the cost for the scan wasn’t bad...I expected to pay more so this was an added bonus! Thank you Dr Sloan and staff!!
I cannot say enough good things about VCA South Paws. We originally started bringing our dog to Dr. Schnedeker at the dermatology department there for a skin condition a year and a half ago. She is great, as are her staff there, Jodi and Sharon. It’s decorated with furniture you might find at home which I appreciate as it helps it feel more homey and less sterile.Unfortunately our dog recently had some sudden onset respiratory issues and we had to visit the emergency department. The doctor kept us informed frequently with updates and explained things to us realistically. We ultimately had to have her put down but I felt so much compassion from the doctor and staff.Obviously any specialty/emergency department will be pricey but I have nothing but positive things to say about our experiences there, so it’s well worth it for your fur babies in my opinion.
Do not use this Vet. VCA should be ashamed to have the people that work at this 24 hour center under its companies name. I thought it was going to be the same quality of service that I get at the Alexandria location, but it most certainly was not. I called due to my puppy possibly reacting to a medication that was given by my original vet at VCA Alexandria thinking they would help me (ignoring the 3.7 rating they have), but the female operator there laughed when I explained that my 11 week old puppy had taken medication for his Giardia and has been irritable and hyper all day. He also been whining and barking non-stop when i placed him in his kennel for the night. Which in the two weeks I have had him it has been the same time every night with no issue. At this point I am struggling to figure out what is wrong with him and have exhausted every possibility so I gave this facility a call. To have your front desk operator not only laugh, but tell me yes it is funny when asked did I say something funny about his situation was the worse customer service I have ever received. Not everyone knows what to do in a situation when their pet is acting out of the norm and if this facility havent realized or understand that then they need new personnel quickly.
This one star is for Ms. Maria, the Oncologist receptionist who was so kind in working with me as we received devastating news about our 3yr old dog, who was diagnosed with Lymphoma. We were referred to Dr. Sheafor, the Oncologist at VCA after diagnosis. Its a shame we cant go into these facilities with our animals to see proper assessment and exams. Dr. Sheafor called me immediately after drop off to discuss Chemo options. Leaving me to wonder was there even another proper exam done? Although the pathologist recommended more testing for my dog, they thought it didnt need to be done so no one offered it to me nor mentioned the request from the pathologist for more testing. As owners should we not have the option to decide if wed like to get more testing done for our babies, to make sure our animals have the best care and treatment for such a terrible disease? Also wrote off, potential Hypo Thyroid issues as UE Thyroid, which I was told by another Veterinarian specialist was complete carelessness, this would play a decision in a treatment plan if so. He will not tolerate Chemo if he is Hypo Thyroid (which VCA never mentioned to me). I had other options I just didnt know what they were at the time because I was told Chemo was my only option for Lymphoma. And in most cases it is unfortunately.I was scheduled for CHOP Treatment when I learned the day before his first Chemo appointment, that more testing needed to be done to determine proper prognosis. Im so glad I didnt follow through with Chemo at this time, it could have potentially made him sicker and even death sooner. And never will I ask an Oncologist for Nutritional advice, looking to make a buck off of recommend Purina and Science diet sales for a dog who has Lymphoma. They most certainly dont support holistic treatment and frown upon any natural supplements to support care. When I asked if I could give CBD oil during treatment, I was given the its illegal response, which is absolutely not illegal. Most Primary Vets are not in a position to recommend or approve CBD oil, however there are Clinics who absolutely support holistic treatment if you chose to do so.Needless to say, I experienced a careless practice and wont be taking any further risks at this facility. Please research your options if you have an animal who is sick and needs help, there is hope and great care out there, I just dont think a Commercial Clinic like VCA will always be able to provide that. They responded to me with the most ugly letter, when I expressed my concerns.
My baby might have had a fighting chance had internal medicine actual cared enough to call back. They told me Im not their only client! There not going to rush to the phone to call me back took 3 weeks to send me the result for his examinations. Because of south paws I had to make the difficult decision to end my babys life. Im broken I lost my life.
My cat ate a bunch of string, so we had to rush her to VCA Southpaws. The staff was incredibly kind and caring, as well as knowledgeable and patient with explaining our options. While I hope emergency vet services wont be necessary again, I would definitely return in the event that we needed to.
This Hospital is a scam, even my vet was so disappointed for the service, My Samantha a 9 years border collie, started to lose weight so I took to my vet and her kidney number were bad, so she sent me to this hospital. Everybody was nice, they talked to you like they care about my pet, so I trusted them, they took my dog for several exams, the charge was more than $1,200.00 which I dont care if the service were right. After those exams, the doctor Heather Hoch, told me that the kidneys values were bad (which I already knew) but in the ultrasound, the kidneys look good, but she would call me with more results, she called me once and told me that the culture exam was fine too, but she was waiting for more results, but it looks like it was urgent to put my dog with fluid, so I said I will do that and I went to their facility to teach me how to do that, a physician assistant taught me, but at that point I didnt know the diagnosis so I asked her what is the problem, she told me that my dog has kidney failure, so I told her if she was sure because the doctor didnt tell me that, so she said yes and my dog only have a few months left.My next step was to go to my regular vet to know more, and she told me that the doctor Hoch sent the result but nothing more, neither a note or a strategy on how to treat my dog, I know this is a terminal disease, but there are many things they could do to prolong the life of my dog, so doctor Hoch never answer, I never knew about the diagnosis from her, she only wanted to put fluids which represent more money I suppose for her and the hospital, but she didnt care about my dog.Samantha died yesterday, my vet gave me some help and she always answers my questions, but the specialist never gave me an answer to my dog. so sad.
Ive used Southpaws for years during emergencies but they have really nose-dived during covid. My dog was ready, I had been read my discharge instructions, paid my checkout, and after that it took them over an hour to walk him the 40 to the door. Literally any able-bodied person could do it, but they didnt despite several requests to just give me my dog back.
Terrible! Never take you dog there. They hurt my dog! They got a deposit of 2500. Before they would treat him. And the doctor was so unprofessional in so many ways. There is no reason to make a paralyzed dog cry for a full minute! Or make an old person wait untill it is almost dark. I finally got my dog when I demanded to get him back because I could not drive in the dark! This place is all about power and the money!
We continue to rely on and trust VCA SouthPaws for their speciality medicine departments as well as for their emergency department. We recently tried to take our dog there in the middle of the night for intense gastrointestinal upset; the ER team had just taken on a few critical patients and let us know it would be at least 90 min before they could treat our dog. We were admittedly frustrated, but understood the need to prioritize ER patients based on severity, so we opted to try a different hospital. Long story short, that other hospital kept him for a few hours and then discharged him with orders for a bland diet and metronidazole. Unfortunately, within just a few hours of having him home, it was clear he was not improving, so we took him back to SouthPaws (during daytime hours this time, so no issues getting in to be seen). They were able to run some diagnostics that the other hospital either couldn’t perform or didn’t think were needed, and turns out he needed overnight hospitalization and IV fluids and meds, not a bland diet and antibiotic as prescribed by the other hospital. It was a wildly stressful experience, but I’m confident he got the right care at SouthPaws and realized we really should have just waited there rather than trying a different hospital for the sake of saving time. We’ve used SouthPaws since 2014 and will continue to as long as we’re in the area. Thank you to all the vets, nurses, and staff for taking such good care of our furbabies
Took my dog in for TPLO ligament repair. Staff was incredibly compassionate and professional. They contacted me constantly with updates and information. I was very concerned going in but Dr Baloghs confidence for success and the way the staff conveyed understanding and warmth was a great reassurance. Im addition to the big things (like actual medical care) they did the little things (like using my dogs name and proper gender pronouns) that let me know my dog was in good hands. No price for that.
SouthPaws was incredible when our dog was attacked by another dog. Dr. OKeefe was so gentle and good with him in the exam, and she was incredibly communicative with us throughout the night when he was being examined & stitched in the back. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and the staff was professional and helpful. 5 stars for SouthPaws if you have an emergency situation with your pet.
I took my sick cat there last night, and we were made to wait two hours without seeing a doctor. The nurse didn’t have time to help us either. So as we were going through the lobby to leave, I told the young man who had checked us in that no one had time to see us do we were leaving. The woman sitting at the next computer said, “Good.” This is completely unacceptable. And when I called today to speak to the manager, I could reach only voice mail - for someone who only works weekdays.
Southpaws was amazing in the care of our beloved dog. They helped us make informed decisions about our pet’s care, and made sure all processes were clear and easy. Can’t recommend highly enough.
My 12 year old miniature poodle was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and was not a candidate for surgery. The oncology vets at Southpaws who cared for Chase were Dr. Boostrom and Dr. Sheafor. My poodle underwent three chemo procedures every three weeks over a period of 7 weeks. Dr. Boostrom is remarkably knowledgeable and wise for his age, and is warm and compassionate. Dr. Sheafor is a true dog whisperer. She was down on the floor with my dog, and by touch could tell the exact spinal lumbar that was giving my dog pain. She and Dr. Boostrom always spent the time that we needed--they never rushed off to the next patient. We know now to never complain about waiting, because in our hour of need, the staff would not minimize the time spent with us. (It is a triage situation, sometimes, where the most severely injured get to go first, etc.) Dr. Boostrom was honest with us, and after only 11 weeks since Chase was diagnosed, told us it was time to euthanize. He was there with us in a comfortable room and I got to hold my dog the whole time. The room was decorated like a living room, with a carpet and upholstered chairs. The vet used just the right, soothing words to explain things and help us deal with our loss. The vet assistants were also wonderful, compassionate, and knowledgeable. An extra touch was the little dog angel lapel pin that they gave my family members. Vets are usually extraordinary, but the vets and staff at Southpaws were beyond that into the super exceptional category!
My 7 year old boxer Sydney was diagnosed with lymphoma and I was referred to VCA southpaws. I couldn’t be happier with the care she received from the beginning stages of her diagnosis to when we had to put her down. They are all very compassionate and Dr.Boostrom was awesome! Thank you all for the great care and love for our Syd dog.
We unfortunately had to put down our dog earlier today but the staff couldn’t have been more professional, kind and patient with us. This place is beyond amazing. I felt as if the doctor knew our pain and was just beyond comforting.
My brother went here with his dog who is dying of cancer. This vet was extremely unprofessional and exhibited poor communication. His dog needed a CAT scan, and my brother confirmed three times to ensure the CAT scan was still on. 30 minutes before the appointment was to take place, the vet cancelled it and said they couldnt do it.Finally, a CAT scan was scheduled. After the CAT scan, the clinic was unable to perform surgery on his dog; the cancer had spread too much so they didnt perform the surgery. However, the >$5000 that they charged for the surgery was NOT automatically refunded, and my brother had to proactively call to get a refund on this after over a week of not hearing back from the clinic. The oncologist was also supposed to call to discuss other options besides surgery and never did.If you care about your animal and want the best for them, I would recommend somewhere else.Edit: Im seeing this almost a year later and wanted to update. My brothers dog died months later of the cancer. The surgery to remove the tumor was cancelled because the tumor had grown too big. It is a real shame to think if they had done it sooner that the tumor could have been small enough to perform surgery on. I would not trust this vet with my animal.
This is the worst place for any dogs, animal care. After charging us almost $8000 for our dogs surgery, they tell us they couldnt remove the whole mass? Why cant they tell us that prior? Why cant they tell us that after the scans prior? We spent so much money for our dog and these incompetent, unreliable people misrepresented their actions. I hope these people realize how much emotional burden, stress, money, and for waiting for 1hr outside for them to pick up our dog have caused us to be late for work, our dogs tumor that could, get this, grow again because they could NOT remove the whole thing. I reported them to the BBB! I rally hope they get investigated
Our family dog was treated here after a referral was made from our initial vet clinic. We had no idea our pup was so sick and needed so much care. The entire staff made this heartbreaking time bearable and I would call each person we met my familys heroes. We spent time with our pup, whenever we went to visit it was never a problem and I cherish those last moments. The doctors took so much time to explain what hey were doing and genuinely cared for our pup and my family. The facility is clean and inviting and the operations are organized. I never questioned the care my dog received. This is the care your animals deserve. It literally doesnt get any better.
I can never express my gratefulness and appreciation for what they did for my dog, Teddy and family. Thank you so much.
I’ve been to Southpaws a few different times for a few different dogs- the most notable being emergency care and spine surgery for my Dachshund that became paralyzed and the euthanasia of my family Beagle mix and me and my husband’s Shar Pei mix.For my Dachshund, they were supportive of whatever decision I made and upfront about the cost of the surgery (7,500 +). They did a fantastic job and my dog made a full recovery! For the two euthanasias (one just happened on July 5th), they were caring and compassionate. Everyone who we encountered was kind and understanding and they were very gentle with our dogs. They made sure our dogs were comfortable and we could have them on our laps and support them, even during COVID-19.Wait times can be a while because it is an emergency vet but that is understandable. I have been very satisfied with them and actually like them a lot more than my regular vet.
My pup and I were placed in a room and left for about 40 mins at 9 pm on a Sunday without any updates or anyone checking in on us. When I called the front desk to inquire about the wait time, they said it’s another 1.5 hrs but offered no apologies or explanation. No, it wasn’t busy and yes there were probably other sicker dogs but common courtesy would have been nice. We ended up leaving and going to an urgent care in DC and they were amazing.
Probably the worst oncology visit you could have at this place. TERRIBLE bedside manner, even the Director of Oncology was rude and refused to offer much of anything. I was told that their Radiation equipment was broken or being updated and Out of Service for 1-2 mos. So why did they take the $200 oncology consult that I called about to set up RADIATION SERVICES when they KNEW THEY COULDNT DO IT!? I was told the front desk staff arent expected to know what equipment is working. Seriously?! Dr also recommended against drugs that scientific studies have proven were effective, and that other Drs since then have questioned why they would say such things. Thus, I am HIGHLY SKEPTICAL about anything here except their attempts to just book consult fees at $200/pop (and that add nothing that google cant tell you when they dont have the equipment they advertise on their website).Anywhere that also refuses to give you estimated costs of services without a fee consult - when you can tell them, what is the cost of an 8 Gy/1x weekly for 4 weeks radiation treatment using a Linear machine is just scamming people.NOTE - if they offer you a prescription check to see if you can get it online cheaper, too. A simple anti-inflammatory I was charged >$50 when on Chewy it was $16.
I was referred to SouthPaws by my vet after my two dogs ate chocolate on Wednesday. I was checked in immediately & the Cavi was taken 1st because of heart issues. A very nice ER vet talked to me, gave his recommendations of an overnight stay & all the procedures that would be performed to get them safe. He presented an itemized bill. I didnt balk at the $4300.00 bill, I just handed over the credit card. He told me about the staffing patterns overnight & to call at any time. Even though he said a nurse would call between 10 am & 11 am & then a doctor between 11 am & 2 pm the next day, I was skeptical. Well, he called me later that night to give an update. A nurse & then the doctor called at the aforementioned time the following day. When I came on Thursday I was astounded to learn that I was getting a $1700.00 credit. All the staff was professional, helpful & compassionate. I would highly recommend this facility. My only wish is that they would put the names of the staff with a photo under the team on their website so I could personally thank the people who took care of them.
Best place ever. My 3 legged, one kidney, hot mess of a dog is grateful for all the care she has received over the years, from soft tissue sarcomas to ITP to Addisons disease, I dont know what Id do if they werent so close by. Lucky to live in Fairfax. From ER docs to oncologists to internal med docs, I really feel they take good care of your babies. Im able to visit when I want if she has to spend the night and they follow up daily via personal phone call. Momma is grateful too
I would like to thank everyone at South Paws, Especially Dr Brehm, Lesley Estrada, and Dr Schaefor. Your time and caring you gave our sweet Fur baby! Its been a very hard and stressful time and your compassion has made is less so! I would recommend to everyone to bring your pet here!
Our beloved 14 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback, Elliott, collapsed on a Saturday evening. We called our typical vet and were told the wait would be a minimum two hours - even for emergencies. We called VCA and were told to bring Elliott over.He was quickly received and with COVID procedures in place, we were kept updated from our vehicle. We dialogued with Dr. Molero regarding Elliotts status and whether surgery made sense. We cannot say enough about the kindness and compassion shown by Dr. Molero. After we made the gut-wrenching decision to end Elliotts suffering, Dr. Molero sat with us as we wept and offered stories about his international adventures. Abandoned and rescued from a horrific situation, Elliott (and his partner-in-crime, Cody our foxhound) then lived with us in four countries abroad. Dr. Molero and her staff provided us all the time we needed to say goodbye and then explained the procedure to us. Recently, we received a beautiful handwritten card from VCA and Dr. Molero. While administering euthanasia at a vet is likely a routine occurrence, her compassion and thoughtfulness comforted us at what is still a very raw time for us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Greg and Andrea
Our dog collapsed and we took him here. They were so wonderful. He had an inoperable tumor on his heart and they were very caring and clear. They gave us options and time. They even came outside with us to give him an injection. They made a hard day much better. *edited: thanks for the response, Southpaws! That was 2 years ago, and I Recently sent some friends to you. We have a new dog and are looking to foster as well so we’ll be back :)
We were very happy with the doctors and service here initially, but then two things happened. Firstly, extra charges were slipped into the final bill that were not reflected in the initial estimate. This would have been fine had it been a small amount, but it wasnt. Furthermore, even though we were eventually reimbursed, the way it was handled was disappointing. They didnt just admit the mistake and reimburse us immediately; it was explained that reimbursement was authorized because our vet had already provided test results that were then repeated by the VCA SouthPaws doctor. Actually, their estimate & bill expressly state that NO procedure will be undertaken/charges made without prior consent of the payee. Breaking their own rule should have been ample cause to merit reimbursement. Secondly, I have been trying to get follow-up advice from the doctor who treated my pet, because his condition seems be worsening. Again, discharge documents expressly advised us to follow up with the doctor within 5-7 days, however, repeated phone calls and messages left have yet to be returned two weeks later. Good treatment is important, but should be assumed at a place like this. In my opinion, follow-up and prompt response defines customer service and professionalism, not just polite receptionists. Lack of these makes me feel like theyre insincere and really only in it for the money. How hard is it to have someone (even just an on-call nurse) return a call and provide follow-up advice, especially when your pets quality of life is at stake?
My dog DArgo had to have emergency surgery on April 16th of this year. From the beginning to end the staff and doctors were friendly and caring. I wasnt able to be with him or in the office because of the virus but it was for safety of the staff. He is home and healing. Thank you to all that cared for him
We had to put our beloved dog, Buddy, a 14 year old Jack Russell down today. It was a hard day as anyone could imagine. Im appreciate of the entire staff, their empathy, and how it was handled.
Dr Hoch was very kind, compassionate and attentive to my dog especially when they were down an internist. I trusted her judgement.Unfortunately he passed away from pancreatitis. I wish I had caught it sooner. Also I wish he could have been fed Via tube bc he may have survived. Early nutrition along with IV fluids is key.I didn’t like the use of Reglan ( didn’t work) for pancreatitis and I especially did not like the nose tube stapled to my dog’s face. How about tape? Didn’t seem humane to me at all but painful!Appreciate the visiting hours but overall extremely expensive as they itemized every treatment and material even if it didn’t work. Military discount was a plus but overall, very distressing experience for me and my sweet little dog.
South Paws VCA was remarkable from the beginning and i wanted to express an extra dose of gratitude and appreciation for the love, support and guidance we received from them.Considering the urgent nature of our beloved pug Pennys cancerous tumor diagnosis, providing her with prompt attention was of utmost concern. Her condition was addressed expeditiously with immediate preparation for surgery. We were thankful for such a quick response to ensure best possible outcome.Contributing to Pennys successful surgery and deserving honorable mention include (not limited to) friendly, helpful staff members: Jenifer Eaton (surgery & neurology reception) Casey (admittance/checkin) Estelle (release/checkout) and Lesley Estrada (surgical patient care coordinator). Lesleys instructional (preop night) phone call made all the difference! Informative, reassuring, and knowledgable, speaking with her was calmning and delightful. She took time to answer all questions and concerns regarding the upcoming procedure.Curbside pandemic protocol was handled with ease and efficiency.Pennys surgery was performed by Dr. Brehm, a highly regarded surgeon who is a caring, talented specialist with extraordinary skill. Following surgery, tumor pathology and evaluation was prepared by Dr. Boostrom, a kind, outstanding oncologist with an exemplary level of expertise.Communication during the entire process was exceptional. Penny received excellent, compassionate care. This meant so much!! The entire experience was an amazingly comforting and positive one!
Dr. Hubert and Dr. Blades were the kindest and most helpful vets we could’ve asked for. Our kitty got very sick very suddenly, and they were very patient in taking our numerous calls and answering our questions. We ended up having to put our lady down, and Dr. Blades sent us a thoughtful, handwritten condolence card a few days later. It may be a small gesture, but it helped us to know that we made the right decision and that the doctors sincerely cared about us, both during and after our time there. I’d highly recommend, VCA truly cares about both pets and their owners and wants to make sure everyone receives the best care possible.
This review is for Dr. Nancy Bromberg, the ophthalmologist at SouthPaws. I havent used SouthPaws for any of their other services, so I cant speak to them.Dr. Bromberg is truly an amazing doctor and woman. She has pictures of all the various species of animals shes worked with, on the walls of the treatment room. Its really incredible how much work she has done helping animals. She is very personable and kind. Her good nature is apparent the moment you meet her. She was gentle with my dog. She explained his issue and the procedure she had to do very well.To my knowledge, there are only 2 veterinary ophthalmologists in the area. While I havent used the other one, I can say with 100% certainty that you cant go wrong with Dr. Bromberg.
First time here and the staff was very nice and courteous. Appreciate that they were concerned with my dogs needs first over paperwork.I like the big open waiting area and the room we went in was very cozy.
First, not a fan of them taking my cat and not being able to see them do their exams. They quickly snatched him when I went in and didnt invite me back with them. No idea what they did back there. Second, they said theyd give me his urinalysis results in 48 hours and were now on day three. Im about $400 out right now and my cat is still sick. Hes gotten worse and now I need to make another animal hospital visit for a few hundred dollars more... Somewhere else. Very frustrated.
We called several times. Whenever we called they were too busy to address our concerns and had to call us back or keep us on hold. They didnt allow us to spend more than 10 minutes at a time to visit our dog. We felt very disconnected as a pet owner when our dog was sick. Doctors and nurses perform rounds for fours per day. This time takes away from 15 hour visiting time allowing only an 11 hr. visit window to see your pet. Waiting rooms were saturated with the smell of urine. When we wanted to talk to the doctors, they would put us in a waiting room every time.
Excellent doctors and very helpful, responsive staff
SouthPaws has always been there when weve needed them, Offering skilled and loving care. On our most recent visit, the Dr. saved my sweet puppy through her timely diagnosis of aspirational pneumonia. Each staff members actions show that he/she truly cares about the well being of their clients and patients. Sending a heartfelt Thank you to each of you!
I have taken my dog here a couple times but the most recent visit was the worst. Because they had to check for a foreign object in his throat they had to give him anesthesia. Problem is they gave him too much. When they finally discharged him to me they said he would be loopy and tired. Over 24 hours later and he could barely stand. I took him to his regular vet where they said he was indeed still anesthetized and kept him for the day on fluids and under watchful eye. Worst 48 hours of my life. It was also explained to me by my regular vet that a lot of what was done at southpaw was needless, ultimately causing an astronomical bill. Never going back again, and I have made that clear to my regular vet who normally recommends them for emergencies.
Great experience I was distraught over my Maltese being in pain they were very caring and considerate. I was checked in immediately and placed in a private room. I was seen by the doctor within 10 minutes. I had no appointment I just walked in. Thanks South Paw for healing my baby you are greatly appreciated 🤗
Impressed. When you walk in there are lounge chairs and the atmosphere is relaxing and kinda fun. The staff were all very direct, gave me options and most important got my dog back in action by the time I left. I chose one of many options of medication, tests etc that made sense financially and helped my dog the best. The level of professionalism was at a high and the bill wasnt bad either. I was given a 2 page printout which described each medication and why. I was also told if I had to come back that it would be less than 1/2 of the initial visit which was inexpensive to start with. When you meet good people and talent you know it. This was the place for me. Ive been to 5 other vets around DC included Friendship and it wins hands down.
I wanted to share why I decided to never bring my dog to VCA SouthPaws again. The veterinarians and staff were great. Very friendly, I felt my dog was in great hands. My dogs condition was diagnosed, and during follow up visits I was given all the information needed for treatment moving forward. Even though it has been years since Ive visited VCA SouthPaws, my experience with the front desk was the reason why I never returned. It was a really difficult time for my dog, who needed her stomach checked to later determine she was diagnosed with IBS. The front desk before the procedure issued me a bill in which I thought was reasonable. I told the front desk that I would have the funds available in a few weeks, as all of my funds were paid in full to a contractor beforehand to have my basement completed. The front desk warned me that the invoice was only valid for a certain amount of days and could change when I returned. They explained to me that the price of supplies and medicine changes over time. I didnt think anything of it. I thought this was fair, and told them that was fine with me.Weeks go by and I have the money available to pay for my dogs procedure. I returned to VCA SouthPaws and the front desk issued me a new invoice and we scheduled a date for my dog to have her procedure. I noticed the invoice was a lot higher than before, but luckily I still had the first invoice. The highest up-charge being the miscellaneous fees section going up by $500. I tried to inquire about the charges and was told again that the fee for supplies and medicine go up. I love my dog and at this point, I was going to just pay the hiked charges as my dog was throwing up bile constantly at this point. I didnt know she has IBS at this time and was worried about her health and well-being. I wanted her to be treated. The day of my dogs procedure, my dog and I were there very early. I check in and politely brought up the bill again, primarily the miscellaneous fees. I wanted to know more details of what that was. I couldnt get a straight answer and decided to just pay and get my dog the procedure she needed. My bank card declined, so I showed the front desk assistant on my phone that I had the funds in my account and told her that I would call my bank to fix the situation.Once I was finally able to get in touch with the bank, I discovered the bank temporarily stopped my card for making too many large transactions. It was quickly rectified and I made the payment with no further issues. I sat down and waited for the staff to take my dog away for her procedure. Its pretty quiet, and my dog and I were the only ones there at the time. Another women steps outside of the office behind the front desk, presumably the manager or someone who overseas the front desk. Her and the front desk assistant start chatting, the front desk assistant tries to speak lowly but I could hear the conversation. The front desk assistant is joking to her colleague about my card declining and me calling the bank. I was livid but pretended that I didnt hear those rude and distasteful comments as I just wanted my dog get the help she needed. The lady that appeared to be a manager called me to the front desk, and proceeded to say this, “The front desk assistant told me that you inquired about the invoice, since you are going through financial difficulty we decided lower the bill to help you a bit.” I smiled, hiding the fact that I am even more livid now. They simply removed the unknown added miscellaneous fees that I couldnt get an explanation for. I knew at that moment in time that I would never return. I wasnt going to write this review, but driving by VCA SouthPaws recently reminded of my horrible experience. Check your invoice carefully, its not a business you can trust completely with its bad billing practices.
The staff was extremely helpful, caring and explained everything step by step. My dog absolutely hates going to the vet, but seemed to feel extremely comfortable at southpaw. They were also very great with trying to keep the cost down best they could! I extremely recommend them!
Dr. Boostrom of the Oncology department is great. Do not hesitate on going in to see him if your furry friend has a potential diagnosis of cancer. His review of options and approach will help you through a tough time.
They couldnt even help my cats skin condition after $900 later. I was also charged months later because they are incompetent. Thank God my cat has a great vet now that also doesnt rob you blind.
Brought my dog on an emergency situation at CVCA for bad fainting spells etc... was greeted very kindly at reception desk.... my dog Bonbon was immediately picked-up by caring Staff members and treated without delay, I was kept informed at all time of every procedure and tests doneon my dog by attending Nurse and Doctor in great details. I was so pleased with the compassion an genuine caring they showed me, it wasan exceptional first experience for me. Thank you.
Had to wait more than 50% longer than told. Then had to wait an additional 20 minutes to pay, despite having been sitting in a room and could have checked out at that time. Only one person was on staff
I seriously can NOT Thank Dr. Hubert and the team at VCA enough, on May 31st 2018 I woke to a horror story with my 20 + year old Maltese Tig. A devastating event and a more devastating end. I honestly believe I am still walking in a fog as my pain is still very fresh and real. But I am awake enough to call out superior care and service and I wanted to publicly praise this team for how kind, loving and respectful of me and my dog they were. I am not a 5 Star kind of person but they deserve each and everyone! Thank you so much for everything.
Unless your pet is in need of immediate critical care and no one else is available do not go here. The wait is very very long (hours) and Southpaws is incredibly expensive. The Hope center or Columbia pike animal hospital are better bets.
