I only wish I knew about Neal’s sooner!! I started to hear grinding when braking. Went online Saturday and requested an appointment at Neal’s after hearing great things about their shop from a few people I know that have used them and know cars better than I do. When they opened again Monday morning, their response was quick and I received a confirmation for the exact time and date I requested. Super easy scheduling. Showed up for my appointment and they were running on time. Repairs ended up being more extensive than I anticipated and they took time to explain why and what needed to be done which made sense…I drive through saltwater often. They offered me a car to use while I waited. The shop was very open and I could observe everyone hustling and being very professional. Repairs were completed in the time estimated from when I handed over the keys. Pricing was more than fair. I used to live in Durham but was visiting from the coast. I drove from Raleigh for this appointment and I will make all my appointments here in the future too! Also, the guys did not mansplain things to me or speak to me with anything but respect. That is a bonus to me because its quite common in every other car service experience I’ve had in my life. It said a lot about the integrity and professionalism of the employees. This is a great place to have your car serviced. They are professional and polite. Been here numerous times over the years and always willing to come back and have a vehicle serviced. They offer a shuttle service cheaper then the dealership for service too.

Went there to get an oil change and my AC fixed. They told me the freon was low (assumably they filled it to see if theres a leak) but they think the compressor is broken and recommend replacing it. I told them Id hold off on replacing it for now. Bill was $152 for the oil change + inspection. My AC works fine now, so now Im not sure they were right in saying the compressor is broken, but maybe its not working as well as it could be?

I love Neals! I get nervous choosing a mechanic because Im a young woman who knows nothing about cars and dont want to feel taken advantage of, but the people at Neals have always made me feel welcome and like Im in charge of my own vehicle. Theyre organized, on-time, and do everything you need.

Had a lot of work done on my car here. Great for oil changes, alignments, inspections, and air conditioning refresh. Competitively priced.Unfortunately, they missed some big stuff when they were doing other repairs (brake was rusted and causing more wear and tear, and my front struts were not great) and I found out when I took it to another garage, who agreed with my assessment that the car wasn’t driving right.

Came in early and dropped my car off. They had my oil changed and tires rotated by the time of my original appointment. Thats not guaranteed depending on how busy they are, but their mechanics are not slackers either. And they threw in a discount for first responders.

I went to a shop to get my lights fixed and they quoted me $800! I took it to Neal’s and they found the correct problem was the wiring and had it fixed right away and ended up only being $60! Neal’s is the best man. I will not take my car anywhere else from now on.

They had my car towed and when I pointed out they did not have adequate signage in the lot across the road from their shop where I was parked, they told me to get off their property. Theyve done good work and although they have sometimes recommended work that was ahead of the manufacturer schedule, they take it off without issue when asked.The woman who works at the front desk is very helpful and friendly. Went to Neals for check engine light diagnostics and they failed to inform me that they didnt work on hybrids before giving me the full report that my check engine light was on due to a hybrid battery issue (which I already knew). Additionally, they kept my car overnight after telling me theyd be done within a few hours, left it unlocked (I was missing a phone charger the next day), and promised me a partial refund months ago that I still havent received. This lack of professionality has been both surprising and frustrating.

I really enjoyed my first visit to Neals garage. It took a long time to get my car because the people delivering my part took a long time. It wasnt Neals Garages fault but they still gave me a free tire rotation, will be going back for sure.

Neals is great! The staff are all top notch. I take my car, a 2006 Honda Accord, and my wifes care, a 2009 Toyota Corolla, to them for both regular and, lets say, unexpected, maintenance. Theyve always diagnosed issues correctly. The work is good and the prices are fair. You cant ask for much more than that.

It makes me sad to write a mixed review. Ive been going to Neals for years for fast and competitively priced oil changes, inspections, and minor fixes. Ive never felt pressured to spend more than I needed to.However, recently I need more extensive work done. After a series of unfortunate events (a power outage and snow storm, not their fault), they ended up keeping my car for 7 days instead of one. Even though they couldnt help it, there was no apology and they would not give me a loaner car.When I finally did get the car back and pay them for the work they did, the car was in the exact same condition from before. I took it back to them and told them nothing had been fixed (they would not give me a loaner car again). They then told me it was a set of bigger problems totaling much more money than I was willing or able to spend.I do not think they are dishonest. I really believe they fixed the original problem they said they fixed. However, they did not check to make sure the car was fixed before giving it back to me. Also, because they did not correctly assess the problem in the first place, I ended up spending close to $500 on a car Im now just going to sell.Long story short: great a place for a fast and easy oil change, but for anything more complicated, take your car elsewhere.

Ive gone to Neals Garage many times for routine maintenance of my vehicles but recently I had major brake problems.I called Neals to discuss my options and they were on it! I had my vehicle towed to them that day(which if it happens to be towed after hours, they have a slot on the door for you to put your key). They were very upfront and honest about what my vehicle needed. They even ran into an unforeseen problem, they called me to explain what exactly they found with my brakes and let me know exactly what needed to be done before doing it.My vehicle was towed to them at 5pm and it was ready to be picked up the very next day!I feel they are very honest about repairs needed and very reasonable when it comes to price. And every employee Ive ever talked to there is very friendly and just all around pleasant to deal with. I would recommend Neals Garage for routine maintenance or major issues with your vehicles!

I started having my vehicle serviced here, because it was very convenient. I work at Duke and could drop off in the morning, take the University bus and pick up in the afternoon (car being an older model, sometimes extensive work was needed). Ive been a customer for a couple of years now and use Neals for my newer car (the older one having gone to my daughter). I appreciated having a familiar and knowledgeable person greeting me each time. Prices are reasonable, service is outstanding. At pick up, a detailed explanation of what was done and why is given to me.

I would recommend Neal’s garage to any of my friends and family. Ken, one of the awesome mechanics that work at Neal’s, is a very trustworthy mechanic. Many of these reviews complain of being taken advantage of by costly services that were not warranted. This is far from the truth. There have been several instances that I brought my car in to have an issue fixed that I self diagnosed and Neal’s refused to do the work because it wasn’t needed and it was a waste of my money. The staff at Neal’s is friendly, accommodating and trustworthy. Neal’s garage is clean, far cleaner than most garages that I have been into in the past, including at the dealership!!! The cameras are a cool touch. It is really neat to be able to see my car being worked on real time!Bottom line: I have been to many garages (my uncle used to run one) and by far Neal’s garage is heads and tails the best venue to take your car if you are in need of a fix in the Durham area. The prices are much better than the dealership and the customer service is great! I will continue to service all my vehicles at Neal’s!

Ive been visiting Neals Garage for almost a decade now. During that time, Ive been through two cars, and had my cars serviced for a wide variety of reasons (oil changes, new brake pads, new tires, engine tune ups, etc.). In every situation, Neals has always been fantastic in terms of service speed, communication, and price negotiation. I appreciate the proximity to Dukes campus (as an undergraduate and employee), and the car service to and from the garage.

The staff is always incredibly friendly and helpful. I never have any problem getting a quick appointment and my Jeep is always ready the same day. Despite being new to the area, I feel l can trust Neal’s garage is giving me a great deal and they are being honest with me about what work needs to be done. Scott has always checks in with me a few days following my appointment to ensure the work was performed correctly and I’m completely satisfied with everything.

Frank and helpful service, even when they are telling you things you dont want to hear. They arent here to make your life easier, they are here to make sure your car is running well and you will be safe when you are driving it, which I greatly appreciate. They will help you plan out more major repairs and maintenance as well as giving you options on how to affordably and effectively maintain your car over its lifespan. They have a lot of customers, though, so dont expect to be able to just pop in for service unless it is an emergency.

I called in on the recommendation of several friends that use Neal’s Garage. I had received a quote from a local dealership that I have used to service my 4-runner for 10 years. The quote was high so I sent it to Neal’s, they quickly came back with a response quote and and scheduled a time. The service was quick, they provided transportation to drive, the had online video so I could watch my car being repaired in real time, it was pretty cool. It was a great experience and they have my business for this vehicle going forward!

These guys are great. The Toyota dealership started messing up my car when I would take it in, so I had to get out of that situation. My wife had gone to Neal’s a few times, so I tried it out. There was none of that macho car mechanic nonsense like with other places I’ve been. Just a bunch of solid dudes that got my car inspected/fixed up so I could keep it on the road. The location is great because if you have to wait there are plenty of places to eat or shop while you’re waiting. You can even walk around the Duke campus down the road for a little exercise. The mechanics have answered all my questions and even helped me the past few times to understand how I can fix something on my own (as I’m trying to teach myself some mild car maintenance). They’ve got my business.

Neals is the best! I called Tuesday before thanksgiving and they gave me an appointment for an oil change at 9AM on Wednesday. While my car was there they also took it next door to the body shop for an estimate of some previous bumper damage. They had the oil changed and the estimate ready for me by 10AM. I love using Neals for my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Scott and his team are direct in communicating and prioritizing repairs. I know I could pay less going slightly outside of town, but the level of care and convenience is worth it.

Lost my trust. Recommended tire rotation for brand-new tires with 100 miles on them. Quoted me $290 to install a battery that would be $120 less elsewhere. Im going to take a guess that many of the neighborhood folk and students who enthusiastically recommend Neals for years have not bothered looking around for alternatives. Our car stopped working a month ago or so. We took our car to Neils Garage to get it fixed. We have 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe. Scott (at the front desk) gave us an estimate around $1200 (ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS). Too much to spend on our old car however we believed that they were going to do a good job. Big mistake. We paid the around $1200 to Neils Garage, took the car back (with a 3 or 4 days of DELAY), the cars engine light was still ON(???) I was driving the car with my two toddlers and the car stopped in the middle of the road. Almost hit by someone behind me. I called the Neils Garage and talked to Scott. He was very aggressive and rude to me on the phone during our conversation. No word of apology, no word of sorry. Long story short, we took the car back to Neils Garage hoping they will fix it again. After we took the car back to them the second time we received a call from Scott asking us to pay another couple hundred dollars to fix the car AGAIN. We said goodbye to Neils Garage. Took the car to another car repair shop.The owner is the sweetest elderly man, grandfather of 15 children. He checked our car and found a different problem than what Neils Garage told us and he charged us less than Neils Garages estimate. Since then my car is happy again and engine light is finally OFF. I still feel lucky to find this new car repair shop and of course regret my experience with Neils Garage.

Service was prompt and sufficient, and they patiently worked with us while we worked out trying to get the dealer we bought it from to cover some of the cost. People in the office were friendly, and they recognized me as soon as I walked in. Also appreciated the discount for Duke students! This shop almost killed my car.After having my car die on the side of the road, I had it towed to Neals as they were close by. After a few days, they called to say that I needed a new crankshaft position sensor which would cost close to $500. I said, great, go ahead and repair it but I should have known then that they were not very honest as this repair can be done for less than $200 by other shops.I didnt hear from them for almost 2 weeks!!! I kept calling but no one would talk to me. I finally was able to get in touch with the manager who told me that my engine had seized and the car was toast unless I wanted to replace the engine. This made no sense from the cars history. I kept trying to get additional information but they just kept repeating that the engine was shot.They still charged me for the crankshaft position sensor as they stated they could not return it.I had the car towed to Creech Imports in Raleigh who confirmed the engine was fine. It needed a new timing belt and pulley. They had it fixed and ready to go in less than 24 hours.Fair warning that this shop is dishonest and doesnt have good mechanics.

Neals Garage has been my go-to mechanic for the past few years. They always do great work on my vehicle, and provide excellent service. They are extremely flexible in scheduling appointments, honest about assessments and prices, and always willing to go the extra mile.

Initially called for an appointment and asked for a low end and maximum high end estimate. When I arrived, they had no appointment scheduled and quoted me 3 times what they estimated over the phone. While I know estimates aren’t accurate, I think this was an attempt to over charge me. Which luckily, I did not agree to. I went to a nearby garage and paid a third of what these people quoted. Very unfriendly environment as well. Definitely won’t use them or recommend them to anyone in the future.
