Apparently when Golds Gym closed they automatically switched over my membership to Genesis without notifying me. Ive never stepped foot in the place and have been getting charged for the past 16 months and they refuse to give me a refund. The woman I talked to even admitted that it didnt make any sense but she still wouldnt help. Even if the gym is nice the ethics of the people that run the place are horrible and Id stay far away.
Go to BBB.org and search for Genesis Health Clubs to see 158 complaints in the last year similar to mine. You will also find that Genesis Health Clubs is not BBB accredited. We purchased a block of personal training sessions this summer. The trainer we hired for his expertise and knowledge of training young athletes was 20 mins late to the first session and a no show to the second session. Our request for a refund was repeatedly denied with the only option offered was to work with a different trainer. That was not an acceptable option.Do not hand over your money to this company without understanding who you are dealing with.
Put my membership on hold with the understanding I would initiate when I got back into town. They started charging me again and told me I had to cancel in person when I wasnt in town for months. I got charged 2 extra months with no refund after NUMEROUS emails and phone calls. Horrible customer service and communication. Wouldnt recommend at all.
They lock you into a contract for a year min, there is a min $150 cancellation fee. And they will never inform you of this. I highly recommend you stay as far away from this place as possible
Nice facility with great instructors. Love it that they offer step classes!! Will be nice when they do some updating but very clean.
Don’t go to this gym. People are pirates. Offer a month to month membership which is a lie because you have to pay for an extra month after you cancel.
I am new to the area and am super excited that I found this gym. I couldnt ask for better instructors. They are energetic, knowledgeable and inspiring. I love taking classes and this gym offers many choices and variety. The staff is friendly and they care about you and want to encourage you to meet your fitness goals. I have made lots of friends. I love Genesis Health Club.
Been working out here for now over a year. Overall the facility has what is needed to get a decent workout in! The monthly price is reasonable. Some machines are starting to show their age and dont always run the smoothest. There are a few machines that seem to be down and due to the physical distancing there arent other options at times. Just depends on what time of day you are there. I would say 3.5 stars! I do like that there are a range of people with what their workout capabilities are and if you have questions on how to use a machine/ or a certain technique, most are willing to jump and and assist. Overall a pretty friendly atmosphere!
Marques went out of his way to help me understand my new membership and I appreciate his extra care and attention to detail. Dan was great in helping me sign up too!
I think you have some great employees. However, the one ice machine has been broken for months. The steam room has been broken down for weeks. The parking lot has pot holes that could swallow a Suburban. A shiny new sign doesn’t make up for the total state of disrepair. Take care of the basics or your clients will just talk with their feet. I’m actually trying to help here.
Love this place! Marqus made signing up for a membership so easy for us. We were able to workout that day. We enjoy the variety of the machines, and the cleanness of the club. This is a large gym, with many group classes such as yoga. I am really enjoying my experience here.
I love the size of the club, very user friendly and I dont feel just like a person with a card. The front desk staff recognize people as they come in and it makes it feel like family. Honestly I also love that there are older people there when I workout in the morning - makes it very comfortable and I dont feel out of place. My trainer is knowledgable, creative and makes the workouts fun (sometimes) . It feels like home.
Read the fine print before getting membership here. After signing up for a one year membership with Aspen they auto-enrolled me in an automatic renewal which I did not know about. Ended up moving not too long after that and had a change of bank accounts. Genesis must have ended up taking over Aspen. Now today I received a bill from Genesis stating I have a balance with them for over $160 and that they have been adding to my bill for FIVE MONTHS without any sort of notification. Corporate would not answer their phone. Contacted the gym directly and they claimed that they tried calling and sending letters multiple times. They stated that they were unable to leave a voicemail due to it being full which it is most definitely not since I have been receiving plenty of voicemails from other calls and delete them after I listen to them. My address was forwarded through USPS so any letters they sent absolutely would have been forwarded to me. Manager of the gym stated that there was no corporate for me to deal with and he was the only one I could talk to. He stated that he would not shut down my membership without payment. The only thing he could do was lower the payment to $59.50 and stated that he doesnt deal with notifications and that is all handled by the billing department. Manager continued to refuse to give me any sort of contact information for the billing office he kept referring to or corporate even though he kept repeating he is not part of the billing department so he cannot answer most of my questions. Ended up paying the decreased amount just to get the membership ended so they could not keep adding to the bill and send it to collections like he threatened.Terrible customer service from both gym management and corporate office. Would never recommend anyone go here just due to their failure to be able to communicate and lack of customer service.
Evan at the front desk is always super friendly and very personable.
Great value. Easy location. Friendly staff.
Trapped my in a month to month situation when my membership was canceled out in February 2020 and now I have a new balance...not worth it...genesis didnt disclose the fact I had to cancel signing a paper Beware make sure they tell you everything and read the print
I used to belong to Golds gym that went out of business in March. Apparently, Genesis bought them out. Without my permission, Genesis started charging me for monthly membership. I was not contacted at all. I have been calling Genesis for weeks and leaving messages in the business department to stop and refund my money. I have left all my details on the phone message. No one has gotten back to me and they continue to charge me. I guess I will have to contact the attorney general for assistance. Very poor business conduct.
Have been attending this club for 7 years and have always enjoyed my time. Grating membership pricing and well-kept facility. Highly recommend.
Large Gym facility that offers a wide variety of fitness options. Love the group fitness classes. Please note you must use the app to register for the classes as spaces are limited due to social distancing.
Great staff ! This gym has everything you need for your fitness needs. Met a lot of great people while working out here 👍
This gym is great! We are in Des Moines for a month on business and Marqus welcomed us with all the info we needed and gave us a great 1 month package. Our interactions with Marqus and the rest of the staff have been outstanding. We feel safe with the coronavirus precautions and the equipment is all top notch.
Keeping this vague to protect a friend.Specifically regarding the girl at the front desk, and the GM, Marques. Genesis shouldnt advertise/offer services that their staff have no idea how to set up, and then refuse to ask how to do it properly. On top of that, Marques has zero follow through on things he says he will do, and then isnt around when he tells you to come in to discuss the issue.Theres clearly little to no communication between staff and management, or with members, and their contracts are pretty sketchy. This gym is cheap for a reason. Id recommend spending a bit more for better service and facilities.
I wrote a review a few weeks ago, was very unhappy. Marcus called me and the problem has now been resolved to my satisfaction.
Tennis courts are amazing, you can always have fun their and on top of that, you can have fun lifting during the pandemic. They always have you wipe down equipment after use which helps us stay safe
Cheap for a reason. Clogged showers, cold showers, broken equipment often, cleanliness. They do have a lot of weight options though.
Scam artists. They will tell you you’re signing up for a monthly membership and then fill out paperwork for a year long contract after you leave. Then tell you there is nothing they can do to help you. Pathetic, unprofessional, and shortsighted business practices.
Won’t disclose membership online or over the phone unless you talk to membership person only. Seems like typical BS I try to get more out of each person.
Its not fancy like Lifetime, where I switched from, but a 45lb bar is a 45lb bar no matter where you go. Theres also a lot less sales pressure, which is really nice! Because theres less sales pressure, it feels like the people there actually get to know you - your name, your goals, who you train with and when, etc. There is room for improvement (more squat racks would be really nice!) but on the whole Im more than pleased with my decision to switch, especially because Aspen offers a run group that meets more than once a week for more than just socializing and the sauna is much less chatty!
The best part about this place is the opening staff Monday-Wednesday. Very friendly and welcomes everyone by name. Karen is such a sweetheart. The problem is that equipment is often broken for extended periods of time. They limit the availability for you to clean your own equipment as there is two paper towel dispensers between the two main gyms in the building and the cleaning solution is often missing. They do this to mitigate costs and I believe at the risk of their staff and club members becoming sick. They have recently posted signs to wash hands but dont provide paper towels in the mens locker room/bathroom. the Shower/sauna area needs some attention as it appears to not been cleaned/repaired in years. The grout between the tiles is either missing or is growing mold. broken/missing tiles should be replaced as soon as possible.I feel that these problems need to be addressed prior to the things that the genesis health clubs website says it provides, for example free towel service. it appears that theyre still on contract with the prior vendor and not providing its members that towel service for the foreseeable future.Once any of these things change Ill be the first to update this review.
The music in the main weight room is so loud you can’t even hear your own music. The music does not have to be so loud you can’t even have a conversation. This has been an issue for a while and a number of complaints made.
Love the staff. Very helpful in helping you succeed!! Geturdone
Been a member for years it is a great place to workout and achieve your goals!
It was my first time at this gym. I used to go to West Glenn. The people here seem pretty friendly so far. I just moved here from San Diego- Nice gym
I was grandfathered in when Golds Gym closed. I enjoy the facility and the staff at Genesis. It feels like home.
Old flat basketballs in the gym, basketball courts are always full. The temperature in the basketball court is freezing most of the time. Drinking fountain constantly out of order. Ill probably quit membership soon.
Good amenities and large. It is usually very dirty in locker rooms. I heard some reports of theft from lockers some of the people working out here are idiots but I guess that is similar at all clubs. If you can pay more find something better. If not wear some ear plugs and just shut out the others.
Giving 1 star because I can’t give zero. Terrible customer service from the GM Marcus. I’ve never met a GM who can’t fix a problem “because he didn’t work there when it started”. Asked to speak to his boss and he said he doesn’t answer to anyone. Left a message with the front desk girl to have his boss, the owner, call me and never got a call. Clearly they only care about money and could care less about the happiness of their customers. Would never recommend this place to anyone.
Good luck getting out of your contract here; I quit going and quit paying after they took over for Aspen and they continue calling to collect membership payment. They refuse to let me cancel my membership over the phone, claiming that I must do it in person. Sad!
Great gym. Always nice customer service.
Friendly staff, false advertising saying you have access to all gyms. I was a Aspen member before they were acquired. I tried to go to the Hickman gym from West Glenn but was told I’d have to upgrade to their more expensive package to go there. All they care about is money and not taking care of their members!UPDATE: I reached out to their corporate person, ended up being routed to 2 other people. Nobody tried to resolve my issue and basically encouraged me to cancel my membership. This review started off at 2 stars, now it’s a 1 Star. I regret there’s no 0 option.
I went here with a friend to try out the place. At first it seemed promising given that its cheaper than some work out places and upon first glance the facilities looked decent. Then, the horror struck when I went into the locker rooms and was appalled by the lack of cleanliness. The shower tiles have excessive mildew on them (if the shower had all the tiles still in tact) and the ceiling looks to have mold growing on it.Upon leaving I was pressured into joining the gym by a staff member and given their contact information if I changed my mind after repeatedly saying I wasnt interested in joining after seeing the inside of the locker rooms.
Spacious clean friendly staff.
Upon signing up, I informed them of me moving cities in a year before starting my membership. I called before I moved about cancelling had to leave a message because I had called before the person handling my membership came into the gym. Every time I called this place it was around 9 am. Regular business hours. The said person never reached out to me so I called again and again. I moved back to school and I got charged an additional two months because they never told me you have to cancel your membership in person!!! The receptionist could have told me that when I said “I need to speak with xxxxxxxx about canceling my membership.” They don’t do reimbursements!!!!!
Got the good old bait and switch from Aspen on Hickman Road....signed up with the general manager and was told i can cancel at anytime with no fee...I switched to a fitness center closer to home and a week after canceling my membership and being told there will be no late fee, I receive a call saying I am in a contract until January 2020.....Before you think about signing up at Aspen, stop that thought and sign up somewhere else. Thank you for lying and robbing me of 6 months of membership fees....
I joined January 7, 2017. I go every day except Sunday. The gum is always clean. Staff friendly. I dont need to pay Lifetime Fitness $90 per month to lift weights and run on a treadmill. I can pay $25 per month at Aspen. My muscles are growing larger. I am in good shape. Its a gym, not a fancy social club. If you need to look high mucky-muck, join Lifetime Fitness. If you want to get in shape and stay that way, join Aspen.I would give a five star review if they had a rope pull machine.
Ive been going to Aspen for about 7 years and I love it. They offer tons of classes and have a huge weight room and cardio room. Another great thing they have is a womens gym which has a good amount of equipment. If youre looking for a good quality, reasonably priced gym this is the place to go!
Clean facility, family friendly and helpful staff. Would recommend it to everyone
I was told I had a 12 month contract for 10 bucks a month.I paid the full 12 months without canceling. This month, the 13th month I noticed I was charged over 50 dollars.I haven’t visited the gym in over 6 months probably more, I was fulfilling my agreement . I called to politely ask for my money to be returned and I was told the guy who handles that wasn’t in, my number and email was taken. I got no call, so I called back and finally got ahold of Marcus.Beyond rude, bullied me into feeling like I shouldn’t dare ask for money back. I explained I agreed to 10 bucks a month for 12 months. Not 51.89 he then brings up my membership from 2013 I previously had and I explained I was nervous coming back to aspen after that 201: experience, I was promised 10 dollars a month and no hidden fees . Gave them a second shot and I’m regretting it.You can go to life time for $100 bucks.. $48 dollars more than aspen where the gym doesn’t smell like mold, the kids club has staff the actually watches the kids, a pool, clean locker rooms. Not to mention a variety of updated equipment and staff.I asked again for them to return my money and Marcus refuses because I didn’t cancel. As you guys can read from a lot of the other 1 star reviews, canceling with this is nearly close to impossible. They tell you that you have to speak to this person or that person and they’re never in, or you leave a message for you request and nobody ever gets to it.Do NOT sign with ASPEN. Both times for me it’s been living hell to get out of a membership and after they surprise you with hidden cost they skip in you are basically paying the same price you would at an Elite gym at higher standards than Aspen has. Don’t waste your money or time.
A great workout place.
Great variety of exercise equipment and classes. Personal trainers are very personable and ready to assist. Locker rooms, basketball and tennis courts. Kids club and a nursery with very friendly staff that my daughter loves to go see.
A lot to offer. Huge weight room and cardio room. 2 basketball courts, steam room and kids club that has a basketball hoop and tunnels. My kid loves it. They also have a lot of indoor tennis courts but I think they cost extra. Very reasonably priced for a membership.
3 words; Ten Dollar Membership. The price is right for an expansive fitness center featuring free weights, workout equipment, basketball vourts, tennis courts (additional fees), fully equipped locker rooms, tanning, and group fitness classes including martial arts, boot camp, and more. This place has something for every fitness level and interest.Parking can get tight during peak hours, but this place is huge and accommodates a lot of people. Its easily the best value, and best equipped gym in town.
It would be nice if the employees /trainers would slow down in the parking lot. Today one of the trainers were flying through the parking lot and almost struck my fiancé and I. Figured it was an customer until noticing it was a trainer.
Great place to workout!
Big Gym...love the exec area & womens! tend to get bothered by personal trainers only at this gym location. It makes it uncomfortable & usually pulls me out of focus! I normally go to another location for awhile after.
I went in to cancel my membership, which went fine. Months later Im still getting calls that my payment isnt going through and when I call back or email I either cant be helped or my email is ignored.
Large weight room. No wait time. Friendly staff. Plenty of equipment. Lots of lockers. All equipment spaced out. Basically everything that lifetime and anytime fitness is not. And DEFINITELY better than Orange Theory Fitness. That place is a joke.
Great price, nice staff. Older equipment and locker rooms, but work well. Would like to see more group class times available.
Offers a ton of options for the price. Sometimes however the gym area doesnt seem to get cleaned well. Sometimes equipment could be serviced or replaced sooner, but recent upgrades make it pretty good. Basketball courts are a big plus.
Awesome gym! First time there and we were greater and given a tour of the place! You can work out at your own pace or get a trainer!
Too hot and strang smell all over.. you have to block your noise to enter locker room if you care to be clean..loud music... too too too old equipments and most either out date or not standard.. good for some people to chill not serious exercise
Prices are reasonable and a great place to lift. A few downsides: No Pool at this location. Mens locker rooms leave a lot to be desired. However for the price its a great place to work out.
Great, but older facility. They have tennis courts, basketball courts, and lots of areas for working out. Memberships are just an okay price. Overall pretty nice place.
Came back here after getting tired of the high rates at lifetime. I was skeptical to come back due to issues with the general manager Marcus and one of there trainers and seeing in the reviews that issues with the GM still existed. I was pleasantly surprised when I came back and didnt have any issues. The lady that manages the front desk, Emily I think, runs a tight ship and knows her stuff. She seems to generally care about her job and helping people. I cant say the same about the General manager from my past experiences. As far as the actual equipment, the gym as a whole is kept up very well. Rarely does equipment break and when it does it doesnt take long to get fixed. In my experience you wont find a gym in the Des Moines area with a better variety of equipment and space. The only thing preventing me from giving higher than 3 stars is experience with the GM. Hopefully the new owners wont tolerate how he treats people and things improve.Update: its 2020 why dont you have adequate Air Conditioning in this facility?
I was member off and on for 10 years. I got a six month job out of state. It costs me more to cancel my Aspen membership then my cell phone contract. I was going to rejoin when I moved back. I will not now.
I was a member of this gym for 30 years and disappointed that new membership rates were being offered for far less than what I had been paying. Received a nastygram in the mail that my credit card had expired. Personally paid them a visit 2 ask for a waiver of 3 months prior high rates in exchange for renewal at a lower rate and was declined. Their membership director not very accommodating. He won the battle but lost the war. Guess Ill go somewhere else
Only thing keeping it from 5 stars, is the older than God Cardio machines. Spacious work out club, great staff. Excellent weights, training facility and classes. .
Lots of classes to chooses from. A good variety of equipment, in good working condition. My boys love the kids club/daycare that is available. The staff is very friendly!
0/5 stars....Was the worst experience I have ever had with a gym, i tried to redeem a groupon and they refused to let me use said groupon here. The reason they gave me was because you can not have previously been a member and try to redeem said groupon here even though no where in the fine print or regulations is this stated anywhere. Talked to the manager at the Hickman road location whose name is Marcus and was completely and utterly rude, would not allow me to talk what so ever, lied about pricing, and was using a very inappropriate tone when addressing me. “Stated that it isn’t his problem”, Then when I asked to talk to his GM or someone up he refused to give me his name or number. The way Marcus treated me was absolutely wrong and it is also wrong how he wouldn’t give me the GM’s name or number, ultimately shows that he was in the wrong and that is why he wouldn’t give me that information. Marcus needs to be talked to and addressed about the way he deals with customers
Love this gym. Rates are low compared to nearly anywhere else and they have 2 full-size basketball courts. Lots of tennis courts too, if you like Tennis.
I moved out of state but I was still being charged even though I am thousand miles away. I was in town in April 2019 and then they made me pay from December till April ok fine I paid and left Iowa and told them to CANCEL my membership. I paid whichcer I supposedly owed them. Fine! But then I was getting charged again monthly. I flew back to Des Moines again. In July and told what’s going on. I told the guy at the receptionto CANCELmy membership (in April’19) didn’t put a note because it was around 7PM despite I never used my card the log activities showed my last log in was way back in November 2018 they still charged. I had to pay again until End of August and now finally I have a paper saying that my membership is cancelled and this guy goes U can keep coming until end of August. He didn’t listen or tried to understand that I already cancelled and it was not my fault that someone forgot to cancel my membership. And there was this guy Markus I think. Very ignorant guy. Rude and careless. I am surprised how he got his job. Instead of getting me a refund they charged me, didn’t treat me like a valued customer and acted like I am cheap it’s only $$ and not a big deal. I asked who is their GM so I could explain the situation and maybe get a refund or something or at least they should of apologized and I would be ok with it. But no! They acted like Markus is big boss there and he does give a damn about anything. Very disappointed! Before you sign up to that location pls re-consider your Other options. 👎👎👎
Love this gym. Would like to see some updated weights in the ladies gym.
Great price for a membership. Love the tennis courts, tanning booth and massage room. Wish they would upgrade the equipment.
Its a good gym of how lot of good memories basketball camps my furry first fitness trainer was their great basketball courts they had that kids area for the Kids Daycare thing lot of memories there when I was a kid too close to a teenager I would recommend it as a gym I really would
Update, cancelling immediately! See details in new review, posting soon. ********Been a member for 20 years, these people have never once asked me to update my home address or phone number or email, I can 100% assure you they dont have any of this information accurate in their system. I dont get any benefits or appreciation or rewards that a brand new member cant get also. Youre just a number, they will gladly take your money. Considering cancelling, they just arent competitive with all the options available at other fitness centers.
Excellent place to work out. Group classes. Kick boxing, yoga, pilates, personal training, treadmill and gym. Spinning classes
The absolute worst customer service I have ever delt with. Do not ever sign anything with these manipulative people. Charged rediculousluly for a nasty dirty gym. Then try to set a personal training appointment and the girl no shows. Call and talk to whoever Abe is and will not do anything to make things right. They make it sound like such a good deal and a good gym and it is in reality a COMPLETE joke.
Love working out here. Have never had an issue.
Low monthly fee. Clean and friendly. Great equipment. Need to stack weights and play better music in the weight room.
They said I signed a one year agreement but cant prove that I did. Be very careful with anything at this place
Love the gym. Great facility. But come on guys, blocking off the Tae Kwon Do studio for classes only and being under surveillance is a little much. Whoever is in control of that space is a little possesive.I know people that love using that space, when no classes are being held of course, myself included. It actually was one thing that made me choose Aspen over everything else. Bold move on your part. I just hope you dont put quarter machines in the shower next. 😂
Top notch facilities for a very reasonable price. If you only want a bare bones membership to lift weights, this place will only cost you ten bucks a month.
Was paying for two memberships, me and my boyfriend. He hadnt gone in a while and they switched the account to his sisters name. The card is in my name. Did not update any other information. Did not remove the billing information and continued to charge me. Now theyre taking me in circles between Merle hay and Hickman and saying I cant be refunded.
Good classes but too crowded. They need a bigger dance studio.
Love Barre class with Kristel. Great price. The equipment is older, but it all works.
The weight benches are always have weights on the bars with no one using them. You would think the employees could come out of there office and restack them.
Crooks.
There prices are Ridiculous It would be better if you go to anytime fitness or something like that. DONT GO HERE they dont help you out in any way at all
Good value for the money. Wish they had swimming pool. Other than that.. I would recommend Aspen Hickman.
I finally got a membership here. Its nice when you leave they always greet you.
I have mixed reviews about Aspen Athletic Club. for just working out its a good place to go its rather cheap and has a good amount of equipment. Our problem was with Taekwondo. Master Jack was rarely there and there were times when there was no teacher there at all without warning. So after we signed a six-month contract for Taekwondo that cost $100 a month which is more than Farrells or any other Taekwondo place we researched we were assured that our contract was cancelled and we would no longer be charged. this was not true as we just received another $110 charge.
Tons of cardio machines and equipment here whether you like free weights or machines. They provide trainers and group classes as well if thats what you are looking for.
At times the popular classes are so crowded that it should be called yoga/zumba beast. I gave three stars because there are excellent teachers, and finally one of the more popular classes moved to a bigger room. It was full almost immediately. You can be crammed like sardines. They can mess up on your paperwork so recheck the red tape. For some reason the classes have become less crowded as of late. I still do not like that they got rid of their pool and hot tub at South East 14th. For me this now comes down to location. Otherwise, the YMCA has indoor walking tracks and swimming pools, and could just as easily join. For now will stck with Aspen due to locations.
This is one of the worse places I have ever been...the way the company has treated me has been extremely horrible. I felt like because of my skin color they did what they did to me.how do you banned someone because they refuse to pay a higher memebership fee. Then how can you tell me that I can rejoin but I need to pay a whole year in advance. It’s sickening to think an organization would act in such away towards a person....i will never forget my experience with Aspen
Great place to workout. Lots of equipment and space to exercise. Can get a bit hectic during busy times of the day, around 5pm.
I love working out here. Encouraging people.
Great place to workout and meet like minded people.
Great Club. Women’s room needs a serious upgrade .
Alas.... WiFi for televisions not working. Went to front desk Nobody knows nothing.
Inexpensive, variety of machines, free weights, large cardio room, Martial arts dedicated section, several tennis courts, steam rooms, decent locker rooms.
