Our family has been searching high and low for a martial arts school, that was the right fit for our 5 yr old. Im extremely happy that we found U.S. Jow Ga martial arts!! The instructors are nothing short of amazing. My kiddo instantly bonded with a few of the junior instructors, that would basically stick to his side to help him through the classes. I cant express how much that meant to me. They have become big brothers to my son, and we love them all do much! They are gentle, kind, and make learning kungfu so fun! We joined the school about 7 months ago and my kiddo looks forward to every class! The school is handling covid perfectly, and implements every safety measure to keep the students happy and healthy.
My 4 yr old son started at this school back in February. He LOVES it and we are very happy he loves it! At a very young age my son is learning loyalty, discipline, kindness, respect and self defense. All very important attributes to guide himthrough life. USJGMA has been the perfect environment to help teach those attributes. The instructors are all extremely friendly, supportive, and knowledgeable. There is a loyal sense of camaraderie between them and the students. USJGMA is non profit so this means the instructors are not paid and the students are taught by their dedication and volunteer services. Thus, tuition at USJGMA is far less compared to other martial art schools in the area. My son goes to class up to 3x a week. The school has been doing an exceptional job with COVID protocols, precautions and guidelines on keeping everyone safe and healthy. USJGMA uses the motto ‘YUT GA’ which in Chinese means ‘one family’. They have most certainly made us feel ‘YUT GA’ and we feel the same way back!!It also has been an added bonus that my son is a loyal lion dance spectator and USJGMA has the most stellar lion dance performance group around.
Our daughter started at this school last year. The instructors are very helpful and supportive. She really enjoys learning traditional Chinese martial arts and lion dancing. We not only joined a good school, we found a family as well.
Best school in the area. From the first time I walked in, I could tell the instructors care a great deal, and take pride in what they do. I spent a large amount of time researching local martial art schools, and I had found an excellent traditional school with wonderful instructors. I knew after the first free class I wanted to join. I was not expecting Jow Ga kung fu to be such a great stress relief. I suffer from depression and anxiety and found training to be quite therapeutic! Quite a pleasant surprise for me! I have been so impressed with the school, and instructors, my daughter has joined. She absolutely loves the kids class, and frequently asks, when is the next class? If youre looking to learn kung fu, US Jow Ga is the way to go! Wonderful school, and very dedicated instructors!
Great group of people, all very friendly and supportive. No belts, no pressure, no limitations on attendance. Great for kids, and adults, really a very family oriented community. Have been going for a few months now, very happy.
I was so impressed with this Kung Fu school, especially compared to other martial arts schools in the area. My children are not only learning self defense but also values and Cantonese culture in a very positive environment, all for a very reasonable price. The instructors are amazing, and they have been especially patient training my four year old son. The school considers itself one big family, and the more experienced students are constantly going out of their way to assist and develop newer students. The school is also volunteer taught, meaning the instructors arent paid, even though their expertise and professionalism deserve it. This means the tuition for the this school is far less than other martial arts schools in the area, especially since my kids can attend up to three classes a week (adults have access to even more classes.) I really couldnt ask for anything more from a martial arts school.
I came from a very disciplined martial arts school, the Shaolin Kung Fu Institute, in New Jersey studying Shaolin Northern Dragon Style (Lung Jop Pai). I trained for 5 years and spent 1 year as an instructor. That was a spectacular experience and should give context for this review. The environment at USJGMA is very friendly, social and supportive, and very low pressure. Theres a strong sense of camaraderie and rapport between students. One could feel the environment is almost too casual; however, the training regimens intensity doesnt lose a step, and I feel right at home taking it seriously and pushing myself to the limit. Its opened my eyes to different approaches to teaching martial arts. Even if you prefer or are used to stricter environments, like me, its worth being open-minded and trying out. Its hard to deny the results when you observe the students technique. As for what to expect, classtime focuses heavily on physical fitness and endurance. If youre not good with cardio, this is a good way to force yourself into it. The drills also vary, with different exercises on different days. For the Kung Fu, theres an emphasis on partner work and applications from the get-go, which is great for people who are looking for immediate self-defense training. After moving away from NJ, I was nervous if I would ever be able to find a rigorous, traditional style of Kung Fu with an authentic lineage anywhere in the Columbia area, as my Sifu stressed the importance of purity and authenticity in martial arts. Im happy to have found Jow Ga, and the school environment at USJGMA is warm and inviting.
