My son and I started with Rey in the fall of 2020. We love the atmosphere and the instructors and higher belts are super patient and helpful. We also love the diversity of students, male, female, young, and old. There are a number of Jiu Jitsu philosophies and approaches. We chose Gracie because they focus on self-defense, not sport. Their combatives program is mature, structured, and combined with outstanding online curriculum makes this an incredible value. Since most street fights end up on the ground, I highly recommend you check them out.
I have trained at Gracie jujitsu Colorado Springs on and off for about five years. I know Rey Wissler to be an excellent instructor. He breaks things down into step-by-step detail that is easy to learn. He is a perfectionist and you will receive the highest quality instruction. He works amazingly well with children as he has three of his own. He treats everyone with respect and dignity.
Full disclosure, Im heavily biased and very candid today, but if youre asking. This is Colorado Springs only Certified Training Center (CTC) for the street self-defense fighting art of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, not the sport Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (There are differences) focused on by the other schools. Locally owned and operated while having the support of Gracieuniversity.com with over 225,000 students worldwide in 195 countries. The owners desired to bring change to their hometown communty because there were no programs like these offered at any martial arts school in Southern Colorado. In 2013 they opened against all odds. Its 2020 now, and what a wild ride it has been, but they are still here and improving.Gracie Combatives is the adult program for fastest way to get you to street readiness with techniques and strategies that dont require you to be the biggest, strongest, or the most athletic to survive, enabling the smaller person to win in a fight against a larger opponent. When you come in your not walking into being someones new grappling dummy, you learn in a cooperative method here. So if youve had previous injuries, or you are just little more advanced in your age. You dont have to worry that a younger, stronger, more athletic student is going to smash you and make going to work difficult the next day. This program is also great for First Responders of all types who are ready to have more tools than what is provided (or not provided) for controlling or restraining a threat. Being adjustable to minimize what is needed in use of force situations and effective while on duty. Some of GJJCSs students are in these fields right now and have done exceptional. The Womens self-defense class uses the principles of energy efficiency, natural body movements, and the protection from strikes found in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu but with the goal being disengagement and escape from an attacker. This is a great class for ladies who arent comfortable training in the co-ed classes of Combatives or who just want to know how to get out of or maximize the prevention of a situation. The Gracie Bullyproof program is for the kids. At the core is an actual plan taught to the children and their parents, of how to deal with the problem of bullying. More than the standard pitch of train with us, (do some tournaments and maybe win some medals), and bullying wont happen because youll (magically) gain confidence., there is a method taught here for kids to defend themselves and not become the bully. A method that parents, educators, and school administrators can get behind. A character development program that tracks from the mat to at-home behavior aids in teaching kids the basics of being a good human. What qualifies this instructor to teach? Gracie University HQ (GU) has tested the instructor in a multi-level evaluation process including Federal background check. Looking to find those who best exemplify the teaching methods, Jiu-Jitsu mindset, and the desire to share Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with others, the leaders at GU have found that not all black belts are great teachers and many great teachers are not yet black belts. Thus at CTCs worldwide, a certified instructor can be ranked as a blue, purple, brown, or black belt, if all requirements have been met to the qualifying standards. The instructor doesnt hide that he is not a black belt. So if you feel you can only learn effectively from a black belt, then this isnt the place for you right now and that is okay, but this instructor will put more effort into the teaching of students when compared to others. Some members of the Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu community have questioned GJJCSS facility partner Worktime Athletic Performance (the owner is amongst other things, a retired champion Pro MMA fighter) about the subject of the rank of the instructor (funny, instructor is never questioned directly). To which Worktime has answered, If you want to see, try him. Bold statement.Try Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Colorado Springs out, you could learn something fun and meet some nice people at the least.
