I have been going to counseling here since the beginning of this year and I have had a great experience. My therapist has been a great help to me. I cant afford to pay for a therapist on my own and I couldnt go to my parents about my issues to try and get a therapist covered on their insurance so this was a great resource. The only time you have to pay is if you dont cancel within 24 hours, which I think is super reasonable since normally therapy would cost more than that. If anyone is considering trying therapy or needs help I would recommend at least trying therapy here, dont let the other comments discourage you!

Terrible reception service. The lady always has an attitude when trying to schedule an appointment if you have a complicated schedule. I cancelled my appointment a week in advance because I realized I would be out of town. There was not another opening for over a month!!! Yet I’m supposed to see someone once a week? okay I guess. Completely understaffed. Students aren’t getting the help they want and need. It’s pointless to go if you need help because unless you’re about to off yourself, no one cares and they’ll put you on a month-long waitlist to see someone. I’d give this place zero stars, but I like and respect the actual counselors who do their job so that one star is given only to them.

Love when I call a day ahead of time to cancel but because I’m two hours shy of “24 hours” I’ll have to pay the $25 fee... which they didn’t mention on the phone at the time, I had to ask because I didn’t want to get the charge. Now I will have to attend this counseling session (which I already pay for through tuition) and be inconvenienced. I would rather use the time to STUDY AND WRITE A PAPER but no I’ll just stress myself out with the LIMITED PARKING (as in 15 PAY TO PARK spaces) and the counseling session that seems to be already pointing out the things I know. I don’t want to go in to confirm what I already know, I want to learn how to HELP MYSELF.

My counselor at CAPS, Dr. C., was so helpful and impactful on my mental health journey. CAPS offers individual, group, and crisis counseling as well as workshops, seminars, and an overnight hotline called HelpLine. Everything is free for students. Dont be deterred by these negative reviews. CAPS isnt perfect, butI had such a positive experience and I hope other students benefit in the way that I did.

Do not go here. I had to miss week 2 of a 3 week workshop for an exam review and they charged me $25 because I missed it and then refused to give me the packet from week 2 and banned me from week 3. I had to pay to miss a free workshop and they refused me helpful resources. Absolutely awful.

Everybody is fine except the old psychiatrist lady. She is very smart and knows how to drive you crazy. I did not say or do anything dangerous. She sent me to the police. I learned a lot from the whole experience, but I hate the fact that the university is not hiring someone who really wants to help.

Posting for a friend:Ive worked with one counselor here (Dr. Carter) and he is a wonderful therapist. I would highly suggest him. However, it is hard to schedule times for when I need therapy. I have had multiple sessions with him, but never the same day twice. They work you into the random spots in their day and do not consider your class schedule, your work schedule, or the location their services are at. If I ride the bus it easily takes me at minimum two hours from leaving main campus to arriving back at main campus. It is also hit or miss with the staff. Some days I they are nice, but other days they are extremely rude. It depends on who you sign-in with and who calls you.

I am so disappointed in this facility and the work that they DO NOT DO!!!!!!!! I suffer from various mental illnesses that I rather not air out but this is not the place to get any type of good customer service or assistance. Not only are they not very accommodating in general but the moving of the facility, and the re-moving of the facility really has been very inconvenient. I will probably update this post if my experience with the establishment changes but I do not foresee that happening.

Very helpful. Started coming in 2016 & was allowed to keep coming after a breakdown & needed a psychiatrist. He (Dr. C) was fairly good but appointments were short (15 min) just to update on how I was. My therapist (Dr. Welch) was extremely sweet, caring & always happy to see me & tried her best to accommodate my schedule.Group therapy is also a good option albeit weird at times but good if you cant get with a personal counselor. The bus ride is ~20 min from main campus which is annoying but I blame that on the university. Definitely are understaffed which again is a funding/university issue

I went twice, and the last time i went, they told me to “visit” a mental health facility for an “examination”. i went here for “crisis” counseling, the person i had was an intern and could literally answer NOTHING on her own. everytime i said something, she said “let me consult my colleagues.” that facility they told me to visit? yea it was horrible and i ended up being inpatient, unable to talk to anyone, i had no type of clean clothes for 3 days, and my roommate had to leave me there by myself.while being there, one of my nurses told me that SCS said i was “no longer allowed to use their services” because my problem “is too severe”.never going again, especially since it does nothing productive. i have to go 1.5 hours away to get proper care. SCS is not worth the stress.

Terrible experience. No one was trying in any sort of way to make students feel at ease or listened to. From the very beginning I felt uncomfortable, the receptionist didnt even look at me and the conselor did not give me any time to just talk about how I was feeling. Additionally, they charged my account when I did not attend the workshop they suggested for me to go to.

I see that a lot of reviews are about people not being taken seriously or not getting the help they need. Maybe somwsomet changed recently, or maybe Im just lucky. But both my counselor and eventually psychiatrist helped me to understand my problems and work though them. If anyone is put off about going, seriously consider if you have an alternative to this. If not, you really have nothing to lose.

The counselors here refuse to help you. Ive gone twice and they sent me out the door. They said it was better for me to find someone in the community when everywhere else is full because they refuse to help students. I tried to at least manage my medications with the psychiatrist and got denied too! Ive heard from other people that they do the same thing. So whats the point of having a counseling center if they arent going to help? You would think with how much money they put into this school I should be able to see a counselor at least.

Ive graduated now and feel a little more comfortable sharing my experience from a short while back. Scheduling was 3 weeks out and, since I was not in crisis, I was just going to have to wait. I was informed there was no cancellation wait list. Before I was seen, a friend was in crisis, so they saw her sooner. And she really was, so that was good. But she wasnt in any danger or harming herself or others, she just had some family issues that were terrible. They still tried to call the police even after her numerous explanations of why there was no chance of danger. Then I was finally seen. Excerpt: Me: ...I just really feel stuck and Im not sure what to do. I mean, what CAN I do? LPC: ...blink, blink... Repeated twice. Then, me: Umm...okay. Well, I guess Ill show myself out. This entire program is the biggest sham. They want to refer you outside of their system saying that theyre not equipped to handle such issues. First off, isnt there a psychiatrist there? Are you telling me that person isnt equipped to assist with boyfriend, family, and academic floundering issues? Not to mention, refer me where? To one of the TWO psychiatrists in CStat who, by the way, each have a 3-month wait list? Again, I would say its a joke, but its not even remotely funny. Its pathetic and, as another reviewer said, Im sure its been established for the sole purpose of the school reporting that they provide support services. And, when you get a chance, go look at the list of group therapy categories they have on their page. Id say its missing a few that many students need.

DO NOT COME HERE !!! DO NOT COME HERE!!! FREE SERVICE,FREE TROUBLE!!!Find someone who is trying to help you rather than the school. This involved with my privacy so I dont want to talk about the details.Im writing this as a part of my recovery for the PTSD because the memory caused by the psychologist here became so desperate that I still have nightmares about that.I hope I will recover from what happened as time goes by. But I hope at least I could prevent someone else from getting hurt.

I went to counseling sessions at SCS for an entire semester and found it to be a positive experience. The counselor I saw, Dr. Williams, is a very good psychologist. At the end of the semester I didnt feel the need to attend sessions anymore because my condition had improved. However, I will say that the extent to which SCS will help you depends on what kind of issues youre facing and the severity of them. The counselors at SCS will help you find another service or therapist in the area if you feel like that would be best. Even if it isnt always a perfect solution, going to SCS is a very good first step if youre seeking help.

MY THOUGHTS: I’ve read through all of the 21 reviews of Student Counseling Services and I’m left with a great deal of confusion. At times, I honestly felt like many of these (1-star) reviews were made in error. Five of the 1-star reviews had no description of their decidedly negative experience whatsoever. While two of the 5-star reviews had no description of their overwhelmingly positive experience with Student Counseling Services (SCS).That said, I urge anyone reading to not base your decision to seek help from SCS on these Google reviews. In general, most people who take the time to leave reviews either had an extremely positive or extremely negative experience and the latter (negatives) are even more likely to leave a review. I think that may be due in part to a cultural climate in America that breeds negativity - a possible explanation of why we’re seeing an influx in depression and other mood related mental health disorders.MY EXPERIENCE: If I were to sum up this semester with one word it would be progress. My psychiatrist (prescriber) and psychologist (talk therapy) from SCS had a lot to do with that, but I am convinced that I’m equally responsible for my treatment outcomes. Counseling DOES NOT fix your problems, but it DOES equip you with the tools to navigate the challenges of life (as a student) successfully. Whether you choose to use those tools or not is entirely up to you.BOTTOM LINE: I am going to finish this semester because of the help I received from Student Counseling Services at Texas A&M University. I hope to be referred to a more long-term provider in College Station next semester (Spring 2019). Not because I don’t absolutely love my SCS providers, but so that other students might have the opportunity to benefit from the incredible providers I’ve had the extraordinary privilege of working with this semester.

My experience was very non-productive. Counseling asked me several times if I felt like a danger to myself even after I made it explicitly clear that I am not. His manager Lenny was very rude and inconsiderate of my time as a student and a working professional and demanded I return a critical phone call when she was done. My meeting with her consisted of her asking me about my music tastes. I got up and left and went to class. A very Bizarre experience to say the least.

I highly recommend Student Counseling Services. I feel like most of the negative reviews here are from people who dont understand the legal obligations counselors (LPCs) have. If your crises or issues youre facing are outside the counselors scope of expertise, they are SUPPOSED to refer you out, its the responsible thing to do. They also legally HAVE to know if youre a danger to yourself or others and report accordingly. This said, the relief I found here is immeasurable. You are limited to 12-ish sessions before they refer out, but I think youll find that if you show up and are ready to discuss honestly what youre going through and are willing to work on stuff, you will find the help you need. Whether youre stressed about the future/graduation, depressed for any number of reasons, feel like youre failing, or even just going through a breakup - definitely make an appointment. My counselor was understanding about my schedule, patient, and reminded me of truths I had long forgotten.Thank you Dr. Welch for everything - I cant imagine what my senior year would have looked like had I not worked up the courage to come talk to you.

Honestly wished it would be better but I got the same referral out to the community despite the fact that I was in a serious crisis both times I tried to receive help. This counseling center is just so the university can say they have resources. It doesnt actually provide any help.
