Everyone is SUPER nice and patient with you. They remind you they all were once where you are (a beginner, I was). I would go back because everyone is very amazing and welcoming here.

Went here once on business and was welcomed with open arms. Carlos (I believe that was his name) taught the class. What a great guy he made me feel as if it was my home gym. I am planning on going back soon for business this is my home away from home in chi town. Classes were full of energy and no ego!

Dropped in to the advanced class. The front desk attendant, the instructor, and the rest of the team were super welcoming. The class was 60 percent men, 40 percent women, which is really good to see in a male-dominated sport.Facilities and showers were really nice and clean. The instruction was logical and professor detailed a few high-percentage techniques, followed by positional sparring, and six minute rounds.I had tough training with everyone there, but there were no egos, and everyone was super friendly.

I’ve been training at Brazil-021 since approximately 2005 and today I was awarded a Brown belt after several years of hard work as a purple belt. As with every belt and stripe I have been awarded along this journey, I feel humbled by the honor and more so by being a part of the 021 family. The owners, Andre & Hanette are gracious and warm people that somehow find a way to help everyone be better inside and outside our school and their message is carried forth by everyone. There is so much mutual respect and support in this familial community that it fulfills me to be part if it.Man or woman, young or old, I highly recommend you (bring your family too) come in and give 021 a try. At the very least, it will be a fun way to get in shape this New Year and ideally you’ll decide to make it part of your lifestyle. You won’t regret it.

Started Jiu Jitsu because I wanted a new hobby. Havent looked back since. This gym is the perfect mix of community/family environment and practical/technical Jiu Jitsu. Dont be intimidated by not having prior experience everyone at this gym treats each other with respect and leaves their ego at the door. This environment is no accident, Andre and Hanette (Owners) do not tolerate anything else.

Really awesome school with a driven and positive environment for learning. You can tell Professors Andre and Hanette really have the right vision and dedication to the school. Thanks guys!I really like that the fundamentals class has a curriculum that focuses on positions. So you wont be bouncing from one technique to the next from class to class. Shout out to coaches Vinny, Paul, Professor Brown and all my awesome training partners!

FREE TO TRY FIRST CLASS!I’ve been curious about jiu jitsu after having training in other various martial arts, and for some reason, I got the courage to try it out this year.My first class was pretty confusing, which is to be expected whenever you are trying something new.u2028u2028 I’m still pretty new, but the class sizes look like they can range between 5-20 people where there are a lot of people with different experience and body types that you can spar with.Professora Hanette is a very passionate and capable instructor. She is able to breakdown fundamental movements for beginners in a way that is easy to understand.u2028 As I take more classes, Im beginning to learn that all their coaches and professors stick to a curriculum for efficient learning. There is plenty of parking at the pay-to-park locations. Some days are free after a certain time during class. Be careful of permit zone parking. The martial arts culture in class is very positive. Everyone I encountered is understanding that you’re a beginner, and everyone is encouraging when you train with them. Higher belts definitely exude experience and they are a great point of reference whenever you feel lost in class. If you are looking to motivate yourself mentally or physically, I would recommend training with this group. I’m one of those people who sometimes needs to see others working hard so that I can do so as well.

I started training here about 2 years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed my journey from the minute I stepped upon the mat. The Professors harbor an environment of respect and learning. Both exhibit a teaching style that fosters understanding, details, and a genuine love for the sport. I cannot express my gratitude for the dedication of the Professors and look forward to training under their teachings for many years to come.

I have been training for almost 8 yrs with BRA 021. My daughter is 10 yrs old and has been training for 4 yrs. You will NOT find instructors with more passion anywhere in Chicago. This school is the real deal with direct lineage to the Gracie family. Very friendly and safe atmosphere to learn the most effective martial art on the planet! Come try a class!

I visited the school while I was in Chicago for the summer and was welcomed warmly. From the first class, I felt like a valuable contributor and student. I highly recommend Brazil 021. The school provides friendly and rigorous training to its students (a hard combination to achieve). Instruction is top-notch. Whether you are looking to train as a competitor or to learn self-defense, Brazil-021 provides both. Ive been training jiu-jitsu for almost 11 years. If I lived in Chicago, I would choose this school over any other.

My son and I have been training at Brazil 021 headquarters in Chicago for the past several months, having come from another school in the area. My main motivation in changing schools was to make sure that my son learned Jiu Jitsu in a great environment. Professor Andre and Professor Hannette have been outstanding teachers---very positive, encouraging, and very detail oriented when it comes to techniques. Weve been very impressed with the school.

If you want to know more than what time it is and want to know how the watch is made this is the place. Team oriented, positive energy, friendly environment, no egos!Classes available for all levels with schedules morning, noon, night and Saturdays. The facility is fantastic with clean showers, this is so rare! It makes it easy for me to train early morning before work.

I first walked into Brazil-021 School of Jiu Jitsu-Chicago Headquarters in bad shape. Not “I used to run track in high school and found beer in college” bad shape. I mean never-stuck-to-any-exercise-routine-ever-in-life type of bad shape. Around that time, I was a food dumpster. I could polish off a 12-inch pizza and a whole order of wings in one setting. I was 305 mostly-fat pounds and I was struggling to tie my shoelaces and get out of cars.I was never good at sports and that created a really bad association with physical activity. Exercise meant reliving all the times I was picked last. Or being met with sighs and harumphs when finally picked. So I just stopped doing it around mid-high school. Time passed. I got older and my eating habits got worse. When I first met with Professor Andre Terencio, I had rehearsed all these words about how careful I would be in case he looked me up and down and showed apprehension, annoyance and skepticism Ive seen so many times from people who just dont want to deal with my size and shape. Well that was time wasted because he and Professor Hannette Staack embraced me from day one. As did all of the other students. People I didn’t know were encouraging me and convincing me to keep at it, even if I could barely hip escape let alone set up an arm bar.I kept coming. Time passed. I got older and earned three stripes on my white belt. I started going to advanced class and nogi. Wearing spandex wasn’t exactly on my bucket list but I finally had the confidence to do it. This past June, I was promoted to blue belt. I not only lost almost 100 pounds in the process, but I fulfilled a lifelong dream to learn a martial art. This is a school where you will work hard. You will leave a puddle of sweat on the mats. You will be pushed further than you could imagine on a Tuesday morning. But all along the way, you will be supported, encouraged, nurtured. Everyone wants everyone to succeed here. Don’t mistake the kindness for weakness. This school is run and attended by world champions. Staack is a legend in BJJ. Terencio is world-renown as well. If you are willing to put the time in, and be consistent, you will reap one of the greatest rewards that could ever be offered in an extremely challenging martial art: one of the best environments to learn. Try a class as soon as possible. Schools are not like this everywhere.

In 2012 I was looking for a place to begin training in Brazilian jiu jitsu and kept hearing great things about Brazil021 so I decided to check it out. I had previously taken one class at a different school and was turned off by the aggressive sales tactics the lead instructor showed when it was time to sign up (with a year long contract). The approach at Brazil021 is anything but aggressive or pushy when it comes to signing up or training in general. Andre, Hannette, and the other instructors are great at knowing how hard to push each individual student so they continue to improve in self-defense and/or sport jiu jitsu without risking injury. They run a tight ship but still leave a little room for having fun and playing safely. Maybe the best attribute of the school though is the community they have created. From day one everyone has been super suportive and welcoming. I continue to take class three times a week and plan on continuing for many years to come!
