I have been wanting to adopt a pet for awhile, so Ive spent a lot of time on their website where you can regularly expect to see new pets that are available for adoption. I filled out two applications, and the staff kept lines of communication open the entire time. They actually reached out to me to let me know that there was a pet who seemed like a good fit! The staff was friendly, and they were more than happy to answer all of my questions. Id definitely recommend stopping by if youre hoping to adopt!

PLEASE READ: I am extremely upset and heart broken my cat had to be returned to back to the shelter after being given a cat that was full of worms and sneezing intensely when I paid a fee to be dewormed and was not sick like the others. We tried to call them 12 times everyday since the day we received her only for the phone to go to voicemail, left emails, and had to wait outside to be talked to. I cant help but wonder if the free cats are being given regardless of sneezing /sickness to families. I understand policies have changed due to COVID, but it is unacceptable. I fell in love with my new pet only to watch her get sicker within the few days of owning her. Bloomington Animal Shelter must be held responsible for their unprofessional behavior.

We wanted a cat. They have free cat day, because of covid they have it out side with a great turn out. The problem, 30 people show up and every one can get 2 cats but they only have 25 cats. They say we have more kittens inside but cant bring them out. After 2 hours we left with no cat just to find ourself at a pet store.

If I could give this pIace no stars I would. I surrendered a completely healthy young friendly cat that a family member was given and couldn’t care for due to health problems. I only had this cat with me for a day and during the time I had it, all it wanted to do was be held and sit next to you and purr and be loved. I would have kept it but already have other animals. I asked them if they could call me if they were going to euthanize it and they said they couldn’t because they didn’t have the staff to do it. I came back about a week later to ask about the cat hoping to hear it went to a good home but they said they euthanized it and that it wasn’t completely clear what happened and that the cat picked up a skin condition from some of the cats at their animal shelter and it also might have been due to space. I am extremely upset over this and I will never go to this animal shelter ever again and will adopt anywhere else and I suggest you do so too. This place is supposed to give animals a second chance, not ruin that chance by having sick cats be with healthy ones. They also talk about no space but they had only a few cats per room. Like I said before, I am extremely upset about what happened to this cat and I thought it would have had a chance to find a home since it was so healthy and friendly but apparently that’s so hard for them to do because they seem to have an extremely hard time with keeping anything alive or healthy. The least they could have done was given me a call if they were going to euthanize it and also separate the healthy and non healthy ones. If I ever need to find a home for an animal I will never go there again.

Was not a good visit at all. We came to look at a pup that had 4 families come see this pup prior to us mind you. However when we seen the file and realized the dog tries to bite when bathed and hasnt any luck on potty training and we have two small children we decided against adopting that particular pup. The blonde lady at the front counter gave me a look as if I had spat in her face and quickly showed me and my family out. Im not sure what we did to offend her but if we arent inclined to adopt a particular animal I would think taking my carpets and my kids safety in mind I did nothing wrong to deserve to be treated like that. Hopefully if we decide to adopt another dog that would be more suitable for our family we wont have to deal with her.

I adopted a rat terrier and was disappointed to find out she has a slew of health problems. I realize that adopting is a risk but a veterinarian should be checking out ALL of the animals prior to adoption. That way the new family is fully aware of what to expect and isnt surprised when the vet bill skyrockets. I am truly disappointed with this animal shelter and expect better. If you want these animals to find forever homes instead of sitting in a cage, then take the proper measures.

I found a dog online and called ahead to find out if he was still available. I would be driving 2 hours. They said yes, they were open until 7 and took down my info to hold him. I left within 20 minutes to go get him. I was in two traffic jams but got there about 6:20. It took them a bit to find him. They put us in a room to bond and I filled out the paperwork. A girl said shed be back to start the counciling so I waited. She didnt come. Then a guy came back and took the dog saying it was closing time. I went out to the desk. The woman I spoke with on the phone said it was 7 and Id have to talk to the director. She told me Id have to come back in tomorrow. I let her know how crazy this was because I told them I was coming, I had been waiting and couldnt just drive 2 hours tomorrow. Id already adopted a dog there before and had been through their counseling. She spoke to me rudely letting me know that this dog needed more counseling and she couldnt just do it after 7 even if I did drive 2 hours and had been waiting. My MIL was with me and couldnt believe how rude she was and the whole situation. Youd think theyd want the dog to have a forever home! Not if it goes after 7! So now he sits in a cold, lonely cage waiting for love and care.

The staff were very helpful and friendly & was able 2 locate & reunite the small dog with its in owner after determining it had/has a micro chip & was back with his family with an 1hout & a half of bringing him into the shelter. They tell you when you adopt a cat that theres a possibility of respiratory infection. What they actually mean is all of their cats are infected with one or both types of cat herpes. (As admitted by one of their staff when I returned a cat) And its HIGHLY contagious. It is not curable. There are periodic flare ups that require medication. I had to quarantine all my animals and return the cat. It broke my heart. If they KNOW an animal has special needs, they should be required to tell us. Thats like cutting a break line and saying Theres a slight possibility of mal-stoppage. Thats normal. Another thing Id like to note is that when I returned the animal, the desk person said they only have a vet come in once a week in the best of times.

I had a really bad experience here. I was fostering a dog to adopt her and when I brought her in to get spayed I told them I was having a tough time with her separation anxiety. They told me when I came back in to pick her up I could talk to someone about it. They immediately put her on the adoptable animals page and were letting people visit her at the shelter the day after she got spayed and the day I was supposed to pick her up (without telling me about it). They then called me several times asking me if I had decided - let alone I didnt know all of this was happening in the background. I work full time and am in school so I was not free during the day to think it over. They called me several times and said the dog had several applications and I needed to decide if I could take her. They offered me no support. At that moment, I had found no trainer, no dogsitter, nothing, so I had to say no. An hour later I showed up at the shelter to see the dog and asked if I could take her home. I stayed until they closed but wasnt allowed to take the dog home. That evening and the next morning I worked to find a solution. I called at 9 AM and said that I had found a dogsitter and a trainer to work on the anxiety, however they told me someone was already coming to pick her up that day. I had taken care of this dog for a week prior to this and had house broken her, taught her commands, and many other things - she had been a stray. Instead of listening to me or helping me they gave her away to someone who had spent an hour with her the day before. They didnt care to hear why I could now adopt her and just seemed like they were pushing her away from me the whole time. They also said they wanted to get the dogs out of the shelter as soon as possible, so I said I would come that instant thats how much the dog meant to me. They didnt care. I showed up later that day after work and they had already given the dog to someone else. They didnt want to make it work. They pushed her away from me and didnt allow me time to figure out a proper solution. I was pressured into saying no to adopting her, when in reality, if provided with the proper resources I could have taken her home the night I was supposed to.

When I first adopted my dog they were nice. At her first vet appointment, not even a week after I got her, she had a ton of issues that cost around $700. I called the animal shelter and asked if they could help pay for some of the cost. They stated they couldnt. I asked why they would let someone adopt a sick dog without informing them. They stated they had too many animals and the vet couldnt see them all. I had her for a year. She wasnt house trained. When I took her back to the shelter they were awful to me. They treated me like I abused her. I loved her but she was sick and wasnt house trained, I work fulltime and she was becoming a fulltime job.
