Im a gym junkie and the open floor plan here provides plenty of space for exercise and movement between sets (animal movement, dynamic stretching, asana inspired movement). Ample free weight equipment with an always empty bench to be able to set up on! Separate dance studio space has two large mirrored walls which is perfect for long stretch sessions, dance, studying how the body is moving in various positions. Full cycle studio with great bikes... and the staff has always been kind and considerate. Top 3 gyms Ive been to in last 10 years.I came in from out of town and Mike immediately helped me find a membership plan that would work best for my family and I. Highly recommend this gym!

This is the absolute worst gym Ive ever been a member at. The staff rude and out of shape, they get upset when in-shape people refuse personal training. All the trainers there need a personal trainer its a total joke. Its good for elderly people who want to watch others and complain, its terrible for anyone actually trying to lift. You will get kicked out if your mask falls down during your lift...even though thats just what happens when you actually push yourself in the gym...go to Equinox unless youre old. Then this is the spot for you!

Would give them zero stars if possible. The staff is very friendly. My issue was with corporate who continued to charge me for almost 4 months after I canceled my membership due to covid and then when I finally got a hold of someone they told me they could not refund me even though I followed the correct steps and mailed in the form! Guess they just enjoy stealing from people. Be aware of signing up with them!

Walked in to check the gym because of a couple friends (memebrs at the gym) recommendation and I was given a tour by a guy who said he was the manager. After the tour he explained about the deals they had and everything else and when I said Ill come back with a decision if I choose to join their gym, he told me not to come back because I didnt accept his deal right there on the spot. He also said I wasted his time as hes a busy man. What kind of manager would make these audacious remarks to a potential client? I wanted to think about it because I knew he tried to overcharge me because my friends paid a fee way less than what he was offering me so I wanted to make sure first. I understand you want to charge fees that benefit the gym but dont be disrespectful when someone doesnt jump straight into your sales and overcharging tricks.

Got a guest pass online, but when I went to the gym to redeem it they told me that they no longer redeem guest passes. Instead, a sales guy toured me around the facility and explained the various membership options to me.Classic sales strategy of showing higher “normal” prices and then offering a significantly lower price that “ends soon” to pressure me into signing up on the spot. In addition to the initiation fee and monthly membership cost, there an annual “maintenance fee” as well. When he explained that the maintenance fee is to cover the cost of maintaining the gym, I thought it would as strange to charge that as a separate fee - my expectation would be that you’d include the cost of maintenance in the monthly fees that members pay.The gym was well equipped and clean, and they definitely are one of the best options in the area during Covid.I haven’t decided if I’m going to join yet - the gym itself makes me want to, but I absolutely despise predatory sales tactics, so their whole “free trial” and “promotional pricing” scam makes me want to avoid. Especially considering some of the other reviews on here about how difficult it can be to cancel.Posting here so that others don’t make a trip all the way there expecting to work out using a guest pass, only to be met with a predatory salesman trying to close a deal.

I have not been in Berkeley for 2 years now and tried to cancel my membership when COVID first happened. I wasnt able to because the club was closed and was for a very long time, until recently. I think its extremely inconsiderate to not even consider getting any refunds for the months charged after re-opening. I understand I didnt reach out in March, but I was dealing with taking care of my grandma who got sick with COVID and unfortunately passed away. Its cruel to not even take into consideration the hardships that people all around the world are enduring due to COVID. I myself am a gym owner and have had to refund hundreds of dollars because we understand that the world is going through an extremely difficult time. I spoke to operations manager Lily and she was not empathetic to my situation at all, or at least she didnt sound like it. It wouldve been nice to at least have received good customer service and feel as if she cared at all or wanted to help.

Beware of giving any information to this company. They repeatedly made surprising annual and training fees to my bank account over the pandemic when it was unclear whether or not they were open - they did not send emails to say that they are open, nor did they mention that they made the charges to my account. I learned about the charges through an overdue notice from a credit account I hadnt given to them. Also, if youre interested in any kind of personal training, they will try to pressure you into signing an annual contract with extremely stringent conditions and then they underperform on the promised services. Do yourself a favor and avoid signing anything! Imagine getting multiple charges over 100 dollars without explanation and meanwhile you havent been able to go to the gym in over a year. This happened twice, once after I unsuccesfully tried to close my account with them.

Terrible customer service! I decided to sign up for a guest pass to try the club out and see the general vibes before committing. Someone immediately called me back and said due to covid their capacity is very limited, they can give me a tour but cannot let me try out the club because there’s a line to come in and they can’t let me in for free while others have to pay for it. Fair, I let them know that I wasn’t interested in committing if I don’t get to see what it’s like to work out there and the representative explicitly told me that I can come in today and try the club once. Deal, I came in, whoever was working there told me I cannot try it despite me trying to explain that someone else told me I could. What is this inconsistency? Update: I finally received the announcement email that the club in open, 1-2 days after it opened. I went earlier tonight. It was so big, spacious and clean. I know its brand new and these things will change over time, but they have adequate numbers of benches, squat racks, and pull up bars. My only gripe would be, I wish they had more than one decline bench station but gyms are always lacking in those. Coming from Berkeley 24H fitness, this is so much better. Also I had to pay for street parking every time I went to 24 hours fitness in Berkeley but this place offers two hours free parking. Ill update this as time goes on.Update: I wish I could give negative stars to this place. They told me two weeks ago that someone would be emailing me the day before they opened to let us know of the open date. Today, I find out through a friend that they opened and he says he received a phone call. When I called to ask about what was up, I was given no explanation. They refused to let me speak to a manager or to leave a voicemail for a manager. Lousy lousy lousy. Also, the rates they offered me in May 2016 are the same rates they are offering to all of you now. Every time I confronted people at their booths, they encouraged me not to cancel because I had such a special deal. Complete liars.Same as everyone else. I signed up in May 2016. I was told that the gym should be opened by August and September 16 at the absolute latest. The only way I received updates was to find the people selling more memberships on the street. They really should have been sending email updates to everyone who has signed up with the status. I understand things get delayed, but this is very poor customer service.

OK gym, decent weight/equipment selection. Been going there for over 2 years and it seems to be getting more and more crowded even during non-peak times. My biggest issues: 1) someone needs to figure out temp control, the gym is almost always too hot. 2) As some other reviewers mentioned they have a big training area that is only to be used by people paying for the in-gym trainers. I agree with the other reviewers that this bad form. They showed me the space and told me it was for my use when I first signed up. 3) They dont clean or police the equipment regularly. So weights and attachments for machines get scattered all over the gym and you have to go hunting. Plus the treadmills sometimes look as if someone dripped all over them or there are dirty paper towels in the cup holders. Other than that it is OK.

There are little things here and there that could make this club a 5 star but is lacking in some of the details. For example, sometimes I walk in and there is no one at the front desk. This allows for anyone to enter and for theft to become an issue. Another example is sometimes the mopping and cleaning schedule is during peak hours. I was surprised to see someone moving around the equipment during a peak time while people stepped over the mop and the mop was going right up to people on the machines. It was awkward. Locker room needs a detailed clean. Facility itself is nice, just focus on the details more to make it a great gym.

TL;DR: Dont let the sales department ruin the gym for you. Its a great gym. Below is a list of suggestions on how to best navigate City Sports Berkeley if you are a newcomer:1. Take my word and other peoples word that the facility is great, skip the tour, and register on your own terms.Well hang on, of course you ought to check out the place. Very well, schedule the tour. When you do:2. Try your damndest to skip the goofy fitness goals assessment, where you are asked a variety of questions about your life and so forth. If you actually want to do it, then fine, but heads up: it ultimately leads to being asked to put down your cash then and there.3. Bring up the free trial. Amazingly, I had to bring it up myself to get it addressed. Bring up the trial, and enjoy your free trial, for free.4. If you are strongly encouraged to lock in your fees before the free trial, as prices might change at any moment, I strongly encourage you to disregard that. Refer again to #3.Suppose you do lock in your fees, and you realize the type of program you signed up for is not the one you want. Proactively get on the phone and get a refund issued. In my experience they are good about this. Once youve got your cash, proceed to sign up on your own terms.Long story short, dont let the sales representatives get to you, and dont let some of their antics take away from how good this gym is. In my view, the facility is top notch with a little something for everyone. Do check it out.

I wanted my daughter to join the gym. Though she is 12 and lazy. The club rules say she must look 14 to join and is too old for the kids room. I got her to the gym today hoping she would agree to join. But the G.Mgr wouldnt allow her to even sit in the lobby if she wasnt a member. He insisted I make her join the gym. When I tried to reason with him that I wasnt certain if my pre teen would actually use the gym and since she was here she could wait in the lobby for 1 hour till I finished work out. He clearly told me to take her home. Not allowed in the kids room too as she is too old. Wouldn’t make exception for one day. Didnt care if I missed my work out class. I called City Sports to find out when they planned to open. As with any business, they have had to deal with bureaucratic red tape. Now, the club is physically ready to open, but they are still awaiting permits from the city. I dont understand why any customers are upset with the business, as some things are beyond their control. I called, was greeted courteously, maintained my composure and remained friendly, and thus had all of my questions answered sufficiently. One should remember that you catch more flies with sugar than you do vinegar. While the situation can seem a little frustrating, I am confident that the prospective patrons will be satisfied once they start using the facility. As a multi-gym City Sports member, I have witnessed unfathomable filth, ignorance, and total inconsideration from other members. All I can say is that Id hate to see the conditions in their homes. I can only hope that these new members have a little more self-respect for community property.DONT leave your weights lying all over the gym floor!DONT think that you own a workout station because you happen to be using it at a particular time--allow others to work in, as rest is requisite between sets, anyway. The same goes for lap lanes: if two in a lane, you may split lanes, but if three or more per lane, by all means, circle swim (generally counter-clockwise) AND choose a lane with swimmers of similar skill levels. There is nothing more obstructive than a slow swimmer who jumps in and impedes the pace of a more adept swimmer. If you must, then be aware of the more advanced swimmer and do your best to move aside to let him/her pass.DONT use the pool, hot tub, or sauna without taking a full shower--NO oils, lotions, perfumes, soap residue, or dead skin cells are welcome!Pick up your damned garbage EVERYWHERE!When showering, remember that this is a public facility--DONT shave or trim your hair and leave clumps to clog the drains.DONT walk into the shower area fully clothed (including shoes), dragging in dirt and setting up camp, then leaving mud puddles behind. Generally, there is one hook per shower stall (excepting handicapped stalls--which the general public shouldnt be using anyway), so learn to condense and change in the locker room, as that is what it is designed for. If youre otherwise too modest, you might consider (and the operative word is consider--as in consideration of others) going home and creating your mess in your own home.Well, I guess Ill catch no flies..but if patrons want a clean facility, they MUST acknowledge and abide by these rules; management should fully enforce them from opening day, as sometimes even adults need to be treated like children as they dont seem to comprehend the fact that every member has equal privileges but also equal responsibilities in maintaining the most desirable environment possible for EVERYBODY.Having managed a gym on the East Coast, I understand these necessities in maintaining a successful business. I set high standards and expect members to do the same. I can tell you that, with such poor attitudes and habits as outlined above, there would be no business because non-compliant patrons would have their memberships revoked and eventually the facility would not have enough incoming revenue to cover operating costs, let alone pay its employees. When you walk through the doors, smile and greet the desk clerk, get to know and respect others, and be tolerant of cultural differences--THIS GOES TWO WAYS! One group should not have to bend over backwards to accommodate the special needs of another and should not have to be subjected to others demands for preferential treatment.A little consideration and a little common sense goes a long way. Lets hope this gym elevates the bar (sets higher standards) for the others and that people just all learn how to get along.

These people are very shady. They make you pay two months up front, force you into autopay (which we all know is a nightmare getting off of) and then also charge you an additional 50 dollar annual fee after 2 months. They dont tell you about this and you pay even if you dont stay for the year. Run away from these people.

Its a nice gym. It has a pool and all the equipment most people need. Everything is brand new, But unfortunately, some of the staff are rude and unprofessional. Almost always on their phones, and they dont like to answer any questions.Update: I take it back! These guys act like pros now! Very nice and helpful staff. Big change since the first months. Thank you CSC

It is like every LA fitness or 24 hour fitness, it might be a cookie cutter gym but has what the vast majority of people are looking for.If you are looking for a place for cardio machines they have plenty. If you go at a busy time the weight section will be crowded but that can be said for every gym ever. I am usually on 1 of the 3 squat racks and start my workout between 11-1 and never have to wait more than a few minutes, if ever.It is clean and the price is very reasonably for the Bay Area ($25 down and $40 a month or $99 down $35 a month). You can go in and get the sales pitch and ask for a 2 week free trial to check it out.Id recommend it. If you know of better in the area for similar price let me know!

My experience with the sales team has been awful. The date continues to be pushed out. I was told that the gym would be open in Early December as the equipment arrived and needed to be installed. I am not sure how that led to a 2 week delay so communication would be great. We were speaking to a manager, as well. I am sure there will be service issues.

Really bad and rude customer service, just want to take your money and double charge you! Last time I been there, they were asking me to give a good review on Yelp and Facebook in exchange a gift pack! Thats so stupid.

Been coming here for almost two years. Its a newer facility, which is nice. Cardio on first floor (pool, cardio machines and some mats), everything else on second. Theyve steadily been taking away the open spaces, which is why Ive gotten really annoyed with this gym. The one open room is constantly about to be, or in use by a class (only yoga classes get close to full attendance). Recently theyve also taken away the only open workout space to give it to personal training use only. So everyone trying to stretch or do floor work is squeezed into tiny spaces.Even though its newer, theres been work done with the first floor ceiling and water pipes, which I find weird.

Customer service isnt that great but they have a pool and some of the fitness instructors are really good. Some employees can be a bit dismissive; others are really nice. Showers are dirty and they dont put down non-slip mats, so the floor often gets slippery.

Very well organized and nice equipment lay out. Variety of exercise options. Swimming lanes only accommodate four people and the lanes are short. Quite pushy in attempts to get you to join.

Fibbed about their opening but hopefully they give their loyal customers a discount for sticking with them. Pretty sure this rating will change but I can only go on what you give me, and that has truly been nothing so 1 is generous. (Member for several months) Has nothing to do with the wait its the telling us its going to to be ready then it being pushed back... several times. Tell me its going to be open in 2018 then I wont have expectations and plans on starting my workout days. As everyone knows, it takes mental preparation to get to the gym and when we get ourselves wound up to go Next week or the week after that and are told oh sorry AGAIN it gets old.Update: Great workout space, very open and great staff 👍🏾 as well.

I liked the club; however, the sales manager needs a professional training so he wont harass the customers anymore. He was trying so hard to force me to sign up at my first visit. His conduct doesnt match to this nice club.

New facility with plenty of space, plenty of new equipment for cardio and strength-training, and friendly staff. Validated parking on the building roof. Small but good pool. Very good place.

Its a fairly nice and well maintained gym. The staff is friendly and helpful should you need assistance with any of the machines and the classes have a fairly wide variety. They have got a hot tub and two lane swimming pool, as well as more cardio machines than I personally think is optomal.

Great gym for semi-recreational gym-goers and those who enjoy posting pics at the gym. Little amount of dumbells, only enough barbells for the benches, one full squat rack, machines must have been selected by someone that doesnt lift, but was given a business plan and corporate account. Good amount of cardio machines.

A big new club. I work out here, because I enjoy the rarely used pool and can get a good workout. Because it is little used, the pool is clean. However, the floors here are filthy. The brown tile and gray grout does little to hide the fact they the floors are rarely cleaned. The showers also need to be checked more frequently.

If I could give less stars I would. These people just want to take your money and run. They pushed back the opening date for months and months and then would not offer a refund. Steer clear of this gym and go somewhere else where they actually care about customer service and are professional in handling concerns

They signed us up in August saying the gym was going to open then. Next month... next month... nothing. Its Jan and they still havent opened but had no problem taking our money. They dont seem to keep their word with giving information or communicate well with their (if they ever opened) customers.

Continually shrinking stretch area. Mediocre lifting equipment. Rising cost of gym membership. I am unhappy with the quality for the price. Moved up here from LA and I really miss my old gym (which offered a higher calibre of equipment and amenities at a comparable and stable price).

Deceiving sales staff had me calling corporate to fix the problems they caused. Do you like getting double charged? Do you like fighting phone operators to get credits that youre entitled to? Do you like dismissive managers and dismissive corporate people? Then this is the club for you. Other than the sales experience, the gym has a good variety of equipment which is brand new, but thats expected for a new gym.

Dear City Sports Club,I find it very rude and not professional that one of your employee name Fallana was racist towards me and my friend. Before I joined this gym I was told that I could bring any guest to workout for a week. I was never informed that I had to register my friend even though she was only a guest. My friend and I we walked-in, Fallana shouted and stopped us. She asked me to sign in again even though I was there in the gym the entire time and she saw me coming from upstair. Anyway, I hesitated her attitude so I signed in again and took my friend with me. She then said my friend needed to sign in too. I told her I have a guest pass for a friend. I was never informed that I need a guest pass like an actual paper to proof that I am allowed to bring my friend in. She was rude with an attitude and said I need a guest pass and I also need to take my friend to go see one of the gym employee to register her in. When I joined this gym no one ever said anything to me. They said I can bring anyone for a guest pass for a week. Then Fallana said its hard to get guest pass because your friend will have wait on the waiting list. Is it true that in order for me or any membership to get a guest pass we must be on the waiting list? I never knew about that at all.I seriously think Fallana doesnt like me and my friend because we are Asian and it seems like shes racist towards us because of her attitude and the way she approach us. We felt uncomfortable and intimidated when she talked to us.I will never recommend anyone to go to this gym especially this is not a friendly environment and the way they handle customer is very unprofessional and rude. For future reference, City Sports Clubs, I hope you are more informative to your customers about guest pass so they (members) will know how to use their guest pass. Isnt this is the promotion for getting people to join your gym? if this is the case then please be more informative in terms of when or how to appropriately use guest pass or if we have to be on the waiting list.P.S.I hope that Fallana will get more customer training and how to handle customers in a professional way not to look down on people or being racist.Thank you,
