The bouldering section is small and walls are short comparing to gyms I’ve had in the east coast and mid-west but I really like the setting. Some problems are very technical and I’m a big fan. Lots of focus on your footwork and body positioning. It reminded me of the Japanese gym I had when I lived Asia. However one thing constantly stresses me out during my climb is that their padded flooring is quite firm and there ain’t any additional cushions for landing protection. When I raised my concern to people working there, they told me to try to land on my back but sometimes when I’m working on a project, I could fall in unexpected positions. I once fell on my side suddenly and instinctively leaned on my hand. My wrist definitely felt the significant impact. My friend also hurt her ankle while falling off the wall. I never worked at a climbing gym so not sure about the best practice for mat/flooring, but I’ll say I’ve never seen a gym with flooring this firm or using the same firm flooring without additional crush pads. I have climbed in 20+ different gyms all over the word.

PG Belmont is my favorite gym to go to. It may be small in comparison to the other gyms, but it has such a welcoming vibe that I always want to go back. Amazing and friendly staff, clean facilities, great climbing, and a gym with squat racks! Who could ask for more ☺️ love you, PG Belmont!!

My biggest complaint is the lack of a dedicated, reasonably secure parking lot for this gym. Street parking is very limited on side streets and at times dangerous on El Camino. Its enough of a hassle to keep me from coming back here. Is there anything being done to address this?

I started climbing arround 4 years ago at planet granite in Belmont and since then, I have climbed at dozens of different gyms in the bay and in colorado. I also work at a climbing gym and I have a fair amount of route setting experience. I believe that I have the right qualifications and experience in the climbing industry to say that the setting at this gym has significantly diminished. I know this gym is hard for the grade (way harder than it should be for a commercial gym) however, I’m not talking about the grades when I talk about the quality of the sets. For the people that do actively set at this gym, please dear god focus on handedness for all routes and focus on flow for your top rope and lead routes. I climbed the entire boulder set yesterday through about the v6 range and I can confidently say that there was not a single problem I would have been proud to have put up myself. Very few problems felt like they were forerun and many of the problems were extremely hight depended. Now about the grades. I do not know if you’re doing consensus grading and that might be the problem or if you guys just decided that you want to be 2 grades harder than anything in the area. The gym that I climb at the most in colorado is considered to be fairly “sandbagged” in terms of indoor climbing. Some v5s and a lot of v6s climbed like v7s in my gym back home. Your roped setting is also significantly harder than it should be. I have quite recently flashed 2 12as outside in poudre canyon in colorado and I struggled to top rope 11cs in your gym. Now for the higher grades, this doesnt really matter but for people that don’t climb and are in good shape, v2s should be accessible. I shouldn’t have to watch a group of friends project v1s and v2s because the movement is convoluted and too difficult for the grade. All in all, the setting is just out of wack in this gym.If you own this gym, I highly recommend that you REQUIRE all of your setters to take at least a. Lvl 1 route setting cert course. After observing the current state of the gym, it kinda just seems like u don’t care. I mean if anyone wants to climb in Redwood City, San Carlos, or belmont, you guys are the only option. If there were any other option for climbing in the area, this gym would not succeed. You guys have the wall, the holds, and the facilities required for a great climbing gym. All you guys need is good setting and this gym could be great. Please make the gym great

Nice place for climbing, but bouldering section was pretty small. Also, there was a youth bouldering team that came in midway through my shift and took over one bouldering section. The coach was apologetic and encouraged me to ask them to move if need be, but there were just too many people in that bouldering section. Would be nice to know that that will be happening when you register for a timeslot.

I love Planet Granite and was very excited when they opened their doors after the COVID shutdown. They presently require wearing a mask for safety which I was happy to do. However, I do have some personal safety concerns, detailed below.1. During a very active belay, my wifes mask slid lower on her face and did not cover her nose. While still belaying someone came over and berated my wife for not wearing a mask properly. This distraction resulted in me being off belay at height for a substantial period in time.2. While weightlifting with my mask on I had so much difficulty breathing that I briefly lost my vision. This was during my warm-up sets and hasnt happened before in may years of lifting. As much as it pains me to say this (I do love Planet Granite) I cannot recommend going at the present time. Its not safe, with or without a mask.

Been coming to PG Belmont off and on for well over a decade now and while its a great place in many ways, the way things are run has me wishing someone else would open a new gym in the area.Pros: The climbing community here is great whether its an open climb night or just hanging out in the bouldering room on a quiet sunday. Routes are fun and varied, staff working the floor is always chill. While it gets busy on a weekday evening, theres usual a route to be found pretty quick and off peak times are great.Cons: The classes. Events, birthdays, summer kids clubs are always a pain to in any gym but PG seems to really be good at scheduling stuff at all the wrong times. Lately thats extended to the workout area where class instructors will take over every pull-up bar for a half hour straight, run a class dominating floor space for twice that right in the middle of peak time. Not the PG community spirit at all.Last but not least is the temperature controls. The bay area is getting warmer and warmer and while running AC is not helping the stem climate change, theres a reason other gyms use it or good fans or something to respond so the gym doesn’t end up warmer inside than out on a summer day. Fees rise, services should improve.Fun place, good climbing but the place is too busy and too dated for the costs. High time for more options in the Peninsula to spread out and update.

Really nice gym. It’s smaller than some of the other Bay Area gyms, but it’s really still a great gym. More of a cozy gym than a power house or tech gym. It’s wonderful for first time visits, occasional, or the regular. If you’re a v11+ climber, you still have an occasional boulder and there is always the Moon board up stairs, but otherwise you might be underwhelmed. It currently 2019, has a wonderful community (but this is always changing). The training facility is great, I have met a number of non-climbers using the facility as well. They have lots of free weights, a large number of cardio machines, and a few classes like yoga and ab-centric stuff.Staff is friendly and courteous.Parking kinda sucks since they have no dedicated lot and you park a block away.Been climbing here since 2017 and have really enjoyed it.

Not a bad gym. I can only speak for the bouldering sections, as I didnt have a belay partner when I went. They made pretty good use of wall space, and the grades were actually comparable to what you would expect when climbing outdoors. Most gyms inflate the grade in my opinion. They didnt have a lounge area or anything, but that may be due to limited space. They have a very nice locker room with sauna. The yoga studio and gym seemed pretty decent. I think there were also two system boards.

He mentioned that I need to fill out another waiver. Wait I have been there for 20 min already and haven’t been able to buy a gift card yet. I left. The lost a costumer. A more fitting name for this business is “Planet Ego”

Kind of a smaller rock gym (though Im admittedly not an expert). I go with my roommate sometimes, and its pretty annoying that they dont have a trial pass or a discount for guests of members (a single day of climbing is $26 with equipment rental). But, this location is easier to get to and park at than the SF location, so thats a win in my book. This is a good place to climb, especially if you can avoid the kids parties.

Love Planet Granite! I thought this was a kitchen counter store whenever I drove past until a friend of mine took me to the Sunnyvale location. I got so into climbing there that I got my own membership, especially since I live walking distance from the Belmont location. Membership includes access to all the gyms (Sunnyvale, Belmont, SF), all the yoga classes, and all the weights and fitness equipment. Sometimes there are a lot of kids that show up for parties and it can be extra challenging to boulder with kids climbing underneath you, but Ive found that going early in the morning is best for bouldering when its nearly empty. Overall great climbing gym.

Bathroom are disgusting! Always smell and the showers have worms!!!The staff can be overbearing as well... Ive had them multiple times follow me into the locker room and (while Im pants less changing- The current manager is most guilty of this) bicker over payment of something already paid for like a locker rented for a year and a gym membership for a year. I regret both FYI!!! I had to literally dig up receipts errrr. The setting hardly reaches anything worth a strong climbers time. Everything is so corporate that they focus on v5/v4 when resetting. Barely one or two climbs that push past v11 its sad ugh. How will a climber growing in this environment be enthusiastic to push further if the gym sets such obvious boundaries? The gym should set for everyone... Not just the weekend warrior!

Review №34

The user experience is too bad in planet granite, compared to touchstone. The most important thing is they are totally not friendly! They only think about making money! You cannot teach others climbing and belaying here, while you can teach others in Touchstone. You cannot say they do this for safety because the belay test is simple and cannot cover all things. They only want to enforce new climbers paying for belay learning session! Touchstone is much better than them. You can teach others in the gym but the belay test is very hard. They require you to take tests more than one time to make sure you know all about belay. And require a lot of additional safety checks and actions. Moreover, different prices of passes and membership for different positions in PG! I want to remind you, please buy monthly membership in SF or Belmont instead of Sunnyvale! The membership is $120 higher in Sunnyvale than in other places! Also other passes! But the 10 visit pass only can be used in the gym you buy this pass! Overall, they only want to make money! My friend signed a waiver before they asked the name and said it didnt exist. Not friendly! And in SF, the pad for signing waiver cannot work. Never care about customers! Please do not come to here!

True, PG Belmont is smaller and older-looking than its sister gyms in Sunnyvale and San Francisco (I call it the stepchild of PG). But its still a nice place to get your indoor-climbing sessions three times a week. For a change up, we supplement our weekly climbs with Sunnyvale PGs crack walls and taller routes, though.PG Belmont shares the parking spaces of Bel-Mateo shopping center. Its less than a block away so youre not crowding residential streets.

Saturdays can get busy with families, but besides that its great.Definitely would give it a try if I were you.
