Dr. Smith, Tracie, and Katie were all fantastic. The exams were extremely thorough and Dr. Smith has great bedside manner. My young daughter was very scared when we first arrived for our appointment but Dr. Smith made her feel safe and comfortable. Tracie took time to explain everything to us over the phone prior to our visit and gave us a clear understanding of what to expect. Katie was wonderful as well with our little girl and even gave her 2 stickers which my daughter loved. The whole experience was wonderful. I highly recommend this office for all your vision needs.

My daughter has been attending Vision Therapy with Doctor Smith since the age of 4, which is when she was diagnosed with several eye disorders including Refractive Amblyopia. Over the years the team at The Center for Vision Development has been both encouraging and helpful. Due to their team and the exercises they have her do, her vision has improved tremendously and her and I are so grateful they got to help me improve over these past few years. If you are looking for a team to help with your vision needs I highly recommend Dr. Smith and her team.

After trying all kinds of specialists and various types of therapists to help our son with his extreme anxiety regarding schoolwork in elementary and middle school, the occupational therapist suggested we try the Center for Vision Therapy here in Austin. Although his vision with glasses was normal, it turned out that they determined that his eyes were not tracking together when he looked at lines of letters on the page! No wonder he was struggling and deeply depressed about school. Throughout high school, he participated in therapy exercises at the Center for Vision Therapy which made a huge improvement in his ability to read and retain information. Before therapy, we had serious doubts as to our son’s ability to go to and succeed in college. However, thanks completely to the Center for Vision Therapy, our son proceeded to graduate with a BS from a major state university. Now, since he is also colorblind, we are about to return to the Center for some prescription Chromagen eyeglasses. Our family is eternally grateful to the Center for identifying our son’s problem and helping him overcome the eye challenges we had no idea he was struggling with.

My daughter Evelyn was diagnosed with dyslexia. We tried several programs through the school and even hired private tutors, but she wasn’t improving. A friend recommended vision development therapy. I had taken her to the eye doctor and she had perfect vision. This is different. She ended up having several vision development issues that were corrected with treatment. It didn’t happen overnight, but with therapy she went from not being able to read a menu to reading chapter books. Even she recognized that it was vision therapy that made the difference for her. The doctor, therapists and staff were all wonderful. They made her excited to go. We saw tremendous improvement in her ability to read, but also in her self-esteem. We owe a debt of gratitude to the Center for Vision Development. I highly recommend them.

Unfortunately for adults with amblyopia, strabismus, or other vision issues (commonly all lumped together and called a “lazy eye”), vision therapy is not typically mentioned as a treatment possibility. I asked eye doctors from the time I was 16 on if there was something that could be done for me, and I’m so thankful that - in my late 30s - one finally mentioned vision therapy. I immediately looked online and found The Center for Vision Development and am so thankful I did. I’ve gained some vision and muscle control in that eye, but I’ve also gained confidence with that awareness and muscle control. I would recommend vision therapy to any adult with eyes that don’t align or don’t work together - if you’ve been told it’s too late or that you had to catch it by eight years old, please come check out vision therapy to see if it could help!

Dr. Smith and her team of professionals are truly heroes! The difference the vision therapy program made for my child is remarkable. From lack of balance to riding a bike. From unable to track words on a page to reading books. From unable to read the board and look down to her desk to take notes to a college graduate. From being told she would never drive a car due to vision challenges to a safe licensed driver. I am moved to tears still when I recall how far we have come and what a difference vision therapy has made in the quality of life for my daughter. I cannot put appropriate words on a page to adequately express how very grateful I am for Dr. Smith and The Center for Vision Development.Lisa L.

Our daughter began undergoing vision therapy with the team at The Center For Vision Development after a screening for kindergarten age children came back with some areas of concern. After a full exam with Dr. Smith we found that she was experiencing several visual processing, learning and memory deficiencies. These issues would likely have gone unknown until later in elementary school had it not been for the screening. We are so grateful that Dr. Smith was able to identify Grace’s challenges and develop a plan for healing and growth. After a little over a year of therapy Grace’s vision is improving in all areas, as is her confidence, balance, and frustration tolerance. It is such a blessing to have found Dr. Smith and her program when we did.

He says (1) I feel comfortable there (2) everyone is nice (3) it always feels clean there. I highly recommend considering this office for your vision therapy needs. Being completely transparent, sometimes it takes time to see the improvement. But I guarantee you it is worth the wait and worth the finances and time given to the work. Over the course of 6 years, we have made made the 6 hour round-trip to CVD countless times. Dr. Smith & her staff have helped my now teen-age son in more ways than words can describe. With therapy and help from Dr. Smith, he has worked himself out of bifocals, daily headaches, illegible handwriting, balance issues, the inability to track moving objects, lack of peripheral vision, trouble reading, and so many more issues. His school and sports performance have improved drastically, as has his level of self-confidence. The entire staff has always been friendly, and eager to help us every step of the way. We are so grateful for the all that Dr. Smith & the CVD staff have done for us through the years, and thankful that we didn’t listen when educators and other doctors told us that the issues our son faced were just from being “young and immature.”

We cant get her to stop reading books even at bedtime. We are so grateful for CVD and the entire staff. Theyre truly the best. I have been to 4 different centers with little to no results on the severe condition with my daughter, CVD has given us the correct path and we will follow it to get the results we need. And Tracie the Office Manager is the BEST and sooo nice and has been nothing but helpful and informative. And CVD has the best receptionist in the world - Katie - she is the sweetest person ever and always makes us feel so welcome. This is such a hard situation to deal with as a new mom with such a small child, and I can’t thank CVD enough for their help in my daughters health and success with her eyes.

My 10 year old daughter Madison has been going to The Center for Vision Therapy for one year now. We’ve seen incredible improvements during that time - in her tracking, eye focus and ability to determine if a shape which has been flipped or rotated is the same as the original. These improvements have been great, but the most amazing result is that my daughter has become a reader and LOVES to read. We first bought her to The Center for VT because it would take her 30 minutes to read a page with large print, and during that time she would constantly loose her place, skip words and replace words with other words. And she was so fatigued at the end of reading a page that reading became this dreaded activity for both of us. It was painful for both of us and that is an understatement. Although we’ve been really happy with all of the improvements she’s made, I never imagined she would actually come to enjoy reading. Every time I filled out a progress evaluation I would skip right over the checkbox for “your child enjoys reading”, thinking I would never be checking that one off. But all of a sudden, about two weeks ago, she bought home a 400 page book with small print from school, and she’s been reading 50 pages a day!! I can’t even complain that she’s 15 minutes past her bedtime because she’s been reading for an hour and wants to finish one more chapter. She actually told me I had to read the book because “it will change my life”! And she’s excited to read the whole series. Seeing the joy she has come to feel from reading, and the sense of accomplishment and pride that she feels now that she’s become a reader, makes every penny we’ve spent worth it. We are so grateful for The Center for Vision Therapy for turning our daughter into a reader!

We had an amazing experience with Dr. Smith and her team. Our son had a significant concussion, and after visiting several Drs. including child neurologists, we eventually had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Smith. She was amazingly thorough, and was able to uncover several deficits affecting our sons vision, as well as, his brains ability to process what he was seeing. He had even significantly lost his peripheral vision. After many months of therapy, he was able to regain all of his peripheral vision and his brains vision processing skills which in turn, improved his reading and academic skills, as well as, his ability to participate in sports related activities requiring fast visual processing skills. We cant thank them enough! They truly changed our sons life. It was the best money we have ever spent to help our son. Thank you Dr Smith and team!!

Great experience with Dr. Smith! Id been having difficulty with reading, experiencing a lot of fatigue, sleepiness, eyestrain, losing my place, having to re-read the same sentences over and over. She did a very thorough exam of how my eyes work together and put me through some tests that challenged me to determine the extent of my problem. Then she reviewed all her findings with me so that I could understand the reason for my frustrating problem, and then she created a plan for me that would include some therapy in the office, but also some stuff I could do on my own (which actually saves me some money too!). All in all, looking forward to working with Dr. Smith and her staff, and would recommend the office to anyone with similar reading, learning, or eye alignment problems.

My son really struggled with reading his first grade year. He would try to avoid it at all costs and then complain that his stomach and head hurt when we forced the issue. I was frustrated with him at first, and then I was just plain worried that he would struggle with reading for the rest of his life, that we would have to move schools, and that his self-esteem would sink so low that he would stop trying all together. It took a while for us to find Dr. Smith, but when we did, it was like someone just handed us a key. We were vigilant with the exercises and truly within just a couple months, a new child emerged. I cant say that he loves to read (and maybe he never will), but I can say that he is not scared of it anymore and it does not cause him anxiety anymore. He started second grade reading at a 1st grade level, but when he started third grade this year, he was tested as reading at an end of third grade level. He is doing awesome in school and his confidence is incredibly healthy and enabling. We have seen substantial and very real results with this vision therapy program. What could have been some huge problem that affected him for the rest of his life has basically turned into nothing. I am very grateful for this program and would encourage anyone to have their child evaluated. (And by the way, I just started my younger son in therapy as well.)

Early in elementary school our daughters teacher confided to us that she was struggling to keep a consistent margin when she wrote. As she progressed down each line of the ruled notebook paper her indent would increase until by the time she got to the end of the page more than half was blank space before writing began. The teacher encouraged us to have her vision examined and tested for dyslexia/dysgraphia. Her eye exam showed 20/20 vision, and she passed both of the other tests without difficulty. She avoided reading and hated to write anything - even the shortest assignment was a cause for tears. We saw the frustration and wanted more than anything to help but no one could give us any answers. A close friend told us their child had good results with vision therapy from Dr. Smith. I checked our medical and vision insurance coverage and was told it was not covered. When I inquired why I was provided with a general not scientifically proven to have medical benefits explanation. This didnt provide much hope but we were willing to try. I will be the first to admit I was extremely skeptical and afraid of holding out any real hope, no matter how much I wanted things to improve. Meeting the staff at CVD and watching Dr. Smith work with our daughter allayed my concerns immensely. She was not at all surprised to hear about the insurance rejection, and provided me with reams of studies, reports, and findings to send to my insurance company to rebut their no scientific basis claims. Most of all, she spent the time to diagnose the condition, patiently explain it, and assure us it was treatable. Her confidence and caring nature are as deep as her medical skills, and her staff of therapists became close friends as our daughter completed regular therapy sessions. The progress was real, measurable, and when it was complete Dr. Smith showed us before and after test results along with a page of writing with perfect left margins. I truly do not know how our daughter could have overcome the perceptive abnormalities she suffered with if we had dismissed vision therapy as unproven and not given Dr. Smith a chance. The genuine compassion and dedication of Dr. Smith and every therapist and staff member at CVD are beyond measure. There really are not adequate words to express how impressed and thankful we are. When our daughter decided she was ready for contacts Dr. Smith gave her a thorough exam and made certain during followup checkups that everything was correct and coached her on adjusting to them and giving her eyes a rest from them with glasses. Our daughter has graduated high school, still sees Dr. Smith for her annual exams and simply adores her. We consider ourselves very fortunate and recommend her at every opportunity to those who might benefit from her expertise.

Preface: I think it is important to know the history, perceptions, and expectations of the person making a review. This is a long review, but hopefully helpful to someone else.My expectations: Going into it I fully expected to be turned away and told there was nothing that could be done. My reason for visiting CVD: Acute onset double vision age 35. No previous history of double vision or strabismus, rule out stroke and TBI.History:Not long after my 35th birthday (almost 3 years from this review), I had an acute onset of double vision. I spent hours in the offices of the most specialized eye providers in the region, neurologists, chiropractors, etc. I spent hundreds of hours desperately searching the internet for some kind of answer that my doctors could not provide. I was sent out the door with prism lenses that made me nauseous and a shrug of the shoulders that stated, We dont know why it happened or if it will get worse or better in the future, surgery is not an option and vision therapy wont help you. I gave up. Then one day woke up ticked off again and inspired to change my path once more. I thought to myself, why should I believe what they say about about vision therapy? People say those things about chiropractors and acupuncture and I have great results (in other areas) with those specialties. I did a random search on the internet for vision therapy in Austin and I stumbled upon CVD. I bit the bullet, made the call, scheduled an appointment for an eval, passed a kidney stone the morning of my eval, and rescheduled promptly. :)What actually happened: It was then I met Dr. Smith...a firecracker of a woman, a scientist, and a person that I knew immediately would tell me what I needed to know to make the decisions that would change my vision for the future. I spent about 7 hours with Dr. Smith testing this and that...a more thorough exam then all of the other providers I had been to combined. Her attention to detail and desire to help me was unmistakable. The individualized attention received during my first visit for an evaluation, then subsequent visits has been phenomenal. I am on my 6th week of treatments and I notice seemingly everyday changes and improvements. I am not using my prisms as frequently, the double vision seems to be less frequent. We take frequent and consistent measurements to provide substantiated evidence that my eyes are improving. This is really long...blah, blah, blah...Dr. Smith, Dr. Bailey, Tracy and team are extraordinary. They are not only passionate about what they do, but skilled and excellent at it. I have faith in this team...and that was something that I lost 3 years ago when this started. We have agreed that while I may never have an answer for the why or how it happened, I do have a chance for overcoming it and moving forward.

My husband is two months into therapy with CVD and Im truly amazed at the difference! He has had diagnoses for dyspraxia and ADHD most of his life- resulting in difficulty with double and blurred vision, slowed ability to process what he was seeing, poor peripheral vision, terrible depth perception, difficulty focusing or switching tasks, and easily fatigued eyes. In two months, weve seen improvement in every single thing on that list. Hes much more confident driving (unprotected lefts and busy parking lots are no longer stressful), he doesnt get stressed out as easily, hes better able to focus and changes tasks much more easily. He has even cut his ADHD medication in half and has much less trouble on days when he doesnt take it.Weve been using the BEMER for about three weeks, which has helped me personally with some chronic shoulder & back pain and numbness in my hand, as well as clearing up some skin discoloration. He just started the Syntonics therapy this week, so we are looking forward to seeing results with that, as well. Its a huge commitment of both time and money (we are far from wealthy!), but both have been absolutely well spent. The staff at CVD has all been wonderful- very friendly, encouraging, and helpful! I cant recommend them enough!

My ability to focus at work has greatly improved (more on that in a minute) as has my overall productivity. In fact, at work, Im required to look at various forms of documents and correspondence. My coworkers tested my vision therapy progress by giving me a piece of correspondence that had been date-stamped over some numbers that we needed to be able to read. No one else in the office could read it. I confidently asked to look at it and was able to decipher the numbers accurately, and this was only after about a month or so of therapy. This was a situation where I wouldnt have been able to do it prior to therapy. The ladies at work have now made me the go-to person to read unreadable things! My vision is not the only area of improvement. As my wife stated, I have been on a low dose of adderall (10 milligrams/day) and have been able to cut that in half. My energy has increased, and mood improved. I have much more confidence in approaching tasks. Even when I do struggle, instead of shutting down, like I would have before, Im able to charge through and finish as much as I can. My brain isnt so focused on keeping my eyes straight anymore, so it can pay attention to other things! My eyes are open brighter now, and my eye contact has improved. I know I am rambling a bit, but I just cannot express how much this has meant to me. Ive not gotten my life back. Ive simply just gotten my life! The staff at CVD are fantastic and have gone above and beyond in working with us. Dr. Smith is more than knowledgable in the field. While, in therapy sessions, I do not work with her as much, when I do, my eyes get a work out! (this is a good thing!) Travis also puts me through my paces as well, and most of my sessions have been with him. Whether youre an adult needing vision therapy or have a child that you think would benefit, I would absolutely give CVD a call and schedule an appointment! My wife and I have wholeheartedly recommended CVD to families we know from church and at work and will continue to do so. Thank you, CVD, for all you have done and continue to do in my life!

Dr Denise is very attentive and patient with very young children. My son was almost 2. He was on an at-home vision therapy program for his hyperopia, strabismus, amblyopia. He ended up moving to another practice because of scheduling conflicts on our end. At the time, the staff included a vision therapist who was trained in identifying retained primitive reflexes - a topic that is not widely talked about by pediatricians yet is significant to eye tracking/teaming, among other development-related issues. I learned a great deal from her. Front desk service was impeccable.

Happy to have found them in my sons time of need.

Rude and dismissive front desk staff. Dr. Smith also doesn’t take insurance and the initial exam is upwards of $275.
