An absolutely amazing organization. My life is changed for the better having found them and adopted a fur baby from them.We started as a foster family for Mace, but as I marketed him and searched for his perfect furever home, I realized I was in love and wanted him for myself. Foster fail!I really appreciate the behavioral support we receive as a foster and after adoption as well.
The volunteers, staff and people who foster pets all work together as one well oiled machine with one goal on mind, getting forever homes for the many, many cats and dogs (kittens and puppies) that end up in several local shelters. My son and I have found our new family member there and we are over- joyed to have Kobe with us.
I understand the idea and have volunteered at dog shelters most of my life. However, there was a dog named Paloma that I was in love with and wanted to take home that day. That dog would have had the most wonderful life with me. They refused, because I told them I had roommates and theyd need all of my roommates to come meet Paloma first..... I was younger and my roommates were in the service industry... I couldnt ask them to take time off from their day to suck the D of politics of this organization for me to get this dog. I should have just lied, I have a wonderful house with a nice yard.... there was no reason I shouldnt have got that dog. But like most Humane Societies or dog shelters it becomes less about the animals well beings and more about politics and rules in the idea that they think theyre doing better for them. Im not saying you shouldnt get a dog from here. I just want to be heard on a situation that was unfair, illogical, and at the end of the day hurt ever party involved. This dog had no home, and all i wanted to do was give him one.
Amazing cause, amazing people that volunteer, amazing animal stories and beautiful animals finding their forever homes. I shop their stores, what you purchase goes to help care for the animals. I donate to their stores, I donate towels and blankets in the winter to the shelter. Please always keep them in mind.
The staff beyond passionate loving friendly I couldnt give the people there a better rating yall if you need to get help for a dog any animal or need to bring a new for a baby into your life these are the most awesome people kudos and blessings.
We showed up to adopt a kitten. We had accidentally went to the wrong side but they told us the correct side to go to. When they did they said that if they had time that the other building could show us the cats they had available IN PERSON. We go to the other door and walk in we are standing there and have to say hello before we are even recognized or heard. Two people finally come out and tell us that they are by appointment only when we were just told by the other side that they would be able to show us the cats? We were also informed we could “meet” the cat via online. They need to get their system straighted out and everyone needs to be on the same page! How can you even meet the kitty online? You should be able to do so in person to make sure the connection is even there between you and the animal. Austin lifted the mask mandate months ago but yet this business can’t even let people come inside??
Those poor staffers and volunteers are so overwhelmed trying to help with all those rescues! Bless them for giving their time and their efforts to make a difference.
Awesome, caring volunteers. Easy to deal with.
These guys do an amazing job with low overhead and mostly volunteers! They have kept us waiting several times and not gotten preventative meds out correctly a couple times, and that is the only reason I dont give them five stars. Cant believe the dogs they accept from Texas towns as far away as Laredo! (saw a city of Larado truck unloading dogs last visit). Please help them by adopting, fostering, or donating!
Austin Pets Alive runs like a well-oiled machine from my experience Nov 2020.After looking for that perfect pet at the 5 nearest rescues around me, I ended up at Austin Pets Alive which is not near to me.They have a match making search on their website AND it does not stop there! After matching about 20 dogs, I was assigned a match maker person who helped me to narrow it down... My heart was for an older dog and the matchmaker nailed it! We have had our precious 2 year old dog for 8 weeks now and the match could not have been better...He came with heart worms and APA was so AWESOME with the treatment to remove the heart worms.
For the most part I know that APA does a great job and is critical in keeping animal population numbers low. With that being said, they sometimes adopt out aggressive animals with serious behavior issues that ARE KNOWN. This includes dogs that have bitten both people and other dogs in the past and they are aware of. These dogs should NEVER be adopted out because they are a huge liability. Plus the owners that usually adopt these dogs aren’t aware of how bad the behavior is and aren’t equipped with the knowledge to help rehabilitate them and are usually clueless as to how bad the behavior really is. It seems very irresponsible to me.
Simply awesome people. We all know that anyone thats lived in Austin anytime. I have the pleasure of delivering to them on occasion. And hope to be doing more with them in the future. Cant say enough good about them a plus all the way
The website is really nicely laid out, and the employees respond so quickly to inquires!
Gosh, I wish I could give even more stars. Such a kind, professional staff and adorable pets in need of forever homes.
I attended Maddies Canine Lifesaving Master Class here and I have to say how grateful I am for the opportunity to do so. APA is a fantastic organization that really puts the animals first and it was an absolute honor to take part in any part of their daily tasks.I learned an unspeakable amount about how we can more effectively save animal lives at our home shelter, and I am now armed with information to assist us in making changes for the betterment of our practices. I would highly recommend this course to anyone working in animal welfare so that you can make a difference too!Come in to see their large selection of available animals and take a forever friend home with you! Their dogs participate in the TOP dog and Canine Good Citizen programs, so if youre looking for a trained canine companion who will become a beloved part of your family, definitely pay them a visit. What they have done for us is absolutely amazing and I will recommend them to anyone, anywhere. Highly recommend!!
Compassionate care for animals awaiting their next home. The animals are the top priority here — sick ones are treated at the medical center and nursed to health before adopting. If you are interested in adopting a dog or cat yourself, make sure to check out their adoption hours online so that you can actually see the lovelies that are waiting to meet you.
Great experience, good people and great service. Got a new pup.
This place is absolutely incredible. The hard work these people put in to ensure that every animal is not just cared for but LOVED is unlike any other adoption center I’ve been to. I would absolutely recommend this facility for anyone who is looking to adopt. They are just the best.In March, I adopted a FelV+ kitty. I was inexperienced with Felvies but I wanted to give it a shot because Vidi the sweetie was too purrfect to pass up! The adoption process was pretty easy and the lady that worked with us was friendly and caring. Unfortunately, about a month ago Vidi got really sick. APA did everything for her to make her better, from accepting last minute visits and squeezing her in even though they were busy, to prescribing her medications, to scheduling her a special surgery to extract all of her teeth (she Developed severe gingostomatitis) all for FREE. All of the vets, vet techs, and volunteers loved Vidi because she was so sweet and it showed in the way they cared for her. Unfortunately, when I got home from work yesterday, I found my poor girl lying on the floor covered in all types of bodily fluids, not moving and barely breathing. I called APA to see if they could do anything but they didn’t answer, so I went to the ER and got the news that she had minutes to live. They suggested euthanasia to ease the process and wanted to charge me $130 just to have her put down, I would have to take her body back with me, which sounded traumatic, and also I couldn’t be there when she passed bc of Covid. Once again I called APA, THANK GOD they answered and said they would see her and put her to sleep free of charge. The ER doc said she probably wouldn’t make the 10 minute drive to the vet, but she did. I got out of the car but was told to wait to sign in, then a sweet volunteer Looked down at my cat and saw she was dying, took her in to show the vet even though she was wrapping up seeing another patient. Less than a minute later he hurried out to get me so I could say goodbye. There was three of us in there, all petting her softly and talking to her so she could pass in peace and know she was loved. They didn’t rush my grieving process, gave me a snip of her fur, and asked me questions about her declining health and explained what they think may have caused her to deteriorate so quickly (FIP). Obviously I was sad, but more than anything I was so grateful for APA for everything they have done for us, especially that they let me be there for her. It brought me so much closure and comfort to see her go and that they handled her so gently and with love.I wouldn’t let the negative reviews discourage you from checking this place out! I am confident that no one cares more for animals than these folks. I am excited to adopt another kitty from them, and so should you! I mean have you read the bios on these pet profiles? They’re SO cute and goofy! They really put so much effort into everything. THANK YOU APA! Keep up the amazing work.RIP Vidi “Phoebe” Liberty Johnson.3/17/2019-8/21/2020
Good pet and Covid practices. Conveniently offers pet surgeries on Sundays.
I never normally write bad reviews, but since APA never responds to any of my emails, I’ve decided to speak up. First of all, this isn’t intended for anyone to stop adopting from APA. I do understand that they can get very busy with the amount of animals they have to take care of. However, if you do adopt, please make sure to take your pet to an actual vet for checkups because they seem to think that every pet is perfectly healthy based on their appearance. They have never responded to the fact that I need medical care for my cat because she is infected with ringworm and was previously infested with fleas before this. I have sent multiple emails regarding this issue. (This is who they told me to contact via their Instagram). I love my cat so much, this is just an honest review from my experience.
APA is amazing! We rescued our doberman from them. If you ever are looking for a charity to donate to. This is the place! If you need a pet, everyone is so helpful! Even after adoption.
Sweet people doing sweet things. Ethically and compassionately.
I tried reaching out to this place in hopes of having my 13 yr old bd party but couldn’t get anyone to respond after calling and leaving several msgs. Very disappointed in the lack of concern to respond to a simple request.
Best experience ever!!! This place really has it together. I am VERY IMPRESSED!!!
Very very nicely organized shelter. The volunteer and staff truly care about and love every dog in the shelter. However, If you are looking to adopt a puppy. It is probably not reliable to trust the breed they tell you. It is not their fault, it is because these dogs are rescued dogs and it is very hard to determine the size and the actual breed until they grow up. Expect a bigger size than what theyd tell you. We adopted our puppy when she was a month old and 10 pound. They told us it is a medium sized dog and will only grow up to 50 pounds probably. Our dog ended up being 90 pounds and a completely different breed than what they said. This does not change the love we have for our dog, just different than what we are expecting. Just have this in mind if you want to adopt a puppy!
Simple and easy to use. Please consider supporting APA! When possible!
My wife and I found a pup on the road during the Austin freeze. I reached out to this organization for help as I was just passing through town. Not only did Patty help immediately, we were able to find him a foster home the same day! It was amazing!
We have adopted 2 dogs from APA! These doggos are my best friends❤️ The people here love their jobs & work very hard. They are doing the best they can with the resources that are donated & granted to them. Very accommodating & understand people that regularly go above and beyond!Thank you APA for saving the lives of these two pups and trusting me to welcome them to my family
An extensive process to adopt a dog. Which is good to protect the animals, but extensive online meetings, calls, email, and paperwork turn it into a week long process. Worth it, if best for the pets which I assume.
The staff acts like they dont want to let you have the animals by basically for ing you to sign your name in blood for an extremely high adoption fee. If you really want to get the most benefit from your dollar for the animals dont go somewhere that pays a ton of overhead and spends a ton of time on paperwork and e planning any former pet owner would now. We went through this for our cat and decided never again. Instead we got a rescue in red Rock
Their COVID procedures are airtight. If you have any animal food, animal carriers, pet beds, etc. they will take these as donations you can drop them off right in front of their medical building C. The loop around on Caesar Chavez will sneak up on you make sure that you are prepared for it.
These guys care deeply for the animals they care for and they have so many unique and creative programs to keep Austin no-kill. Great place, great mission.
This is a wonderful facility! Everyone there loves their work and of the 10 dogs weve had in the last 30 years it came from there. In the same time. We have adopted for cats there . This is my Roxanne who we put down at 19 years old just before Christmas along with mr. Trump. Theyre wonderful with the animals and take care of them and follow up.
They do an awesome job showcasing each pet with great descriptions of their personalities. Only wish that we could meet the cat in person or do trial adoption before finalizing the adoption process.
Two pitties from APA. They do the work of angels.
Austin pets alive has amazing staff and does amazing work! Absolutely recommend!
Wonderful people doing the best they can to help the animals, and doing it well.
They are helping me keep my puppy alive .thank u all for helping chevy and I you made my day . Happy 4:20
They do a great job rescuing & with their foster program. I love fostering and if you have any concerns they help you
Lovely people lovely adoptable pets.
Really nice people. Unfortunately it was closed do to covid which is understandable. But was happy to make a donation of my puppies old wee wee pads and create. And the people were nice to show us were to drop them off.
This rescue is so awesome they are so organized the communication is great, everybody is so so nice and we have them to thank for our sweet puppy! I love how much support they still offer after the adoption is done. It was by far the easiest rescue Ive ever worked with all around A great experience.
If you can, please adopt! We recently adopted a ringworm cat at Austin Pets Alive. They have been so supportive and helpful along this journey. Umiak 36 who we know call Princess Zelda has been recovering wonderfully! They took care of her spay and supplied us with all the information we could possibly need. I highly suggest adopting from Austin pets Alive!
Fostered a cat for 7 months. It finally came around from feral to family. The folks here are great. They made everything easy for us.
I wish I wasnt writing this... but we had a very sad and disappointing experience with APA. We looked for weeks on the website to find our perfect kitties. We finally found two adorable tabby kittens to give a forever home to on their website. We set up a meet and greet with the foster. After, We let her know we wanted the babies, then we put in the application. Next, we got confirmation that we were first in line for adoption! Our family was so thrilled and excited to bring them home, including our kids. We went out and bought them food, toys, kitty beds. Then, shortly after the foster mom sent us a rude email trying to say that because we did our meet and greet with the litter of babies for less than 15 minutes per kitten that it did not count and we could not adopt them and they would go to the next in line. The APA staff then emailed twice telling us they would solve the issue and to not worry- that we would be able to adopt. Then 2 days later after ignoring us, a manager reached back out saying they could not solve the issue. They did offer to wave the adoption fees for our next adoption but ultimately the whole experience was heartbreaking and that was hardly a way to fix it. We might try APA again one day after they one back up to IN PERSON ADOPTION. But their online system right now is a total mess and they did not do the right thing in our case. They gave the babies to someone who was NOT first in line based on their own policy. I feel so sorry for the next family that happens to!! And the terrible thing is- we could have gave those kittens a really great home!
Will never work with these guys again. I will go direct with a breeder and get a dog. If I could give zero stars I would. 0/5
Austin Pets Alive was an amazing experience. They matched me with the perfect fur baby. The process was great.
My experience was terrific. Once we found it, it was very well organized and everything went just right. The people I encountered were very helpful and pleasant. Would highly recommend.
I really hate to write this review because at the end of the day I do love my dog, but the way her adoption was handled was bungled from the start & Im left feeling like Im holding the bag. If you are a first time pet owner this place is probably not for you. First, I was sent the adoption contract while I was already in the process of paying & was told I would be charged an additional $100 deposit pending me getting her spayed, which, fine . I also adopted her while she was on distemper watch, apparently its policy to have all puppies on distemper watch cared for through APA!, I was not informed of that & was told on multiple occasions it was fine to take her to a new vet which I did. Which started a whole new host of problems that ended up costing me more money out of pocket. At this point Ive jumped through multiple hoops, paid out of pocket for medication that was unnecessary, but also supposed to have been provided through APA! If it had been necessary. And now Im being told after all of this that my dog was spayed before she even got to APA!. This all feels very unprofessional. And I havent been offered anything other than apologies. Of course, this being the type of organization it is I have no interest in taking money from them, but I feel pretty helpless here. At one point I was told I could always surrender my dog, which really hurt because I was just reaching out for help. This has been ongoing since the first week of January. Just be aware.
I tried scheduling an appointment through their website and email but never got any response back.
There are few places that when I interact with I think WOW - that place was amazing, in every single detail. APA! is definitely one of those. Ive recently adopted a new puppy from APA and the entire experience has been top notch. These people really care about the pets and the folks adopting from them. I love the care they provide and yes Ill be donating and supporting them going forward. This place is a phenomenal place to adopt a loving and wonderfully cared for pet.
Yesterday, I took the dog I’ve been caring for, Tiago, to receive medical care for Parvo here. I’ve been taking care of him for the last two weeks. He followed me home on a walk back from the park as I passed the bus stop where he had been dumped and waiting for hours. According to one of the bus drivers on that route, at least. No collar or tag, no chip, no posts that match his description on Craigslist. I made the decision to keep him 5 days ago as he appeared to be pretty happy living with me and I very much enjoyed his companionship. 4 days ago, the symptoms started and then proceeded to get worse until 2 days ago when it became very clear something was seriously wrong. We went to central Texas emergency hospital where they diagnosed him with Parvo, treated him, and sent him home with me with some meds. We got home around 11pm and within an hour he began to fall even more ill. I stayed up with him throughout most of the night as he cycled between bouts of vomiting and diarrhea. With a recommendation from the vet at central Texas, I took him to APA when they opened the next morning. I was hoping it would just be a matter of getting additional treatment from their outpatient program but when the vet came out to look at him, she told me his odds of surviving with at home treatment was about 30-40%. If I were to surrender him to APA, she told me his odds were closer to 80%, so I did. I have no regrets with this decision but what I don’t understand is why they won’t give me the opportunity to adopt him back. One of the workers there told me it was a legal issue with the city but I don’t see anything under title 3 on animal regulation that prevents such a thing but then again I am not a lawyer. Im guessing this is just a company policy to prevent people from abusing the system for cheap/free medical care, which I can understand. The donations page on their website states that 600 dollars will save the life of a dog with Parvo and 300 dollars covers the basic shelter and medical needs for one dog. Assuming the latter is not already included in the 600 to treat a dog with parvo, the total cost is about 900 dollars. If I am willing to pay this amount, why can’t I have the opportunity to adopt Tiago?
Amazing rescue group here in austin. The passion this organization has is incredible.
I called to donate several boxes of goods and they were happy to take them. I am glad that the items I donated arent in a landfill and hopefully some did and cats use the items for years to come.
Dropped off some linens and pet collars and toys. Saw staff members working hard- they are angels!
The dogs seemed to be suffering in this place :( no staff was available for a matchmaking. Can’t make a appointment for matchmaking either, the website only lets you to book an appointment for a specific dog.
This place is such a blessing! They helped me find our amazing Brucey boy after a total 5 months of trying to find a dog that fits our family (and very picky Yorkie) APA I forever thank you for all you do!
This place is fantasic...they have a staff that really cares about animals ...I, my friends and family members have gotten several animals from here over the last 20 years and we just adopted another about a year ago from there and she has turned out to be a great member of our family ....im a firm believer that you should always adopt ....there are many awesome dogs and cats up there that need a home .....be a hero ...up your family game ...save a life ...
Amazing people and amazing animals
I am so in love with my adopted pitbull Bodhi (APA! ‘Juice’)
We have adopted three animals from here. We could not be more happy about the work they do. Most recently, we adopted Andi (known as Zombie at APA!). She was about to be euthanized at the Palm Valley Animal Center when APA! rescued her. She had been through a lot, and had several issues. APA! had a surgery scheduled for her, and after we adopted her provided us with medication for free. They also performed her surgery at no cost to us. We cannot imagine any other place that would do this, and we am so thankful! We also adopted a kitten nearly two years ago. Her name is Vivian (formerly Firefly). She was a bottle baby at APA!.And we have a wonderful dog named Peyton (formerly Bonnet). We couldnt be more happy. Thank you APA!
This is a great place to adopt a new furry friend.
APA is an Austin staple for adopting cats and dogs. Their compassionate and all-inclusive approach is far and above the best adoption experience I’ve ever had! We were able to take care of vaccinations, spay, and microchipping in a really affordable way. Plus, APA is no-kill. Senior and special need animals get the opportunity they so deserve!!!
I love how much they care for there animals. They make the process for adopting long and very in depth which i personally really appreciate. They insure the animals are going to loving caring homes. Would definitely adopt from here again!
Easy to use website, very simple and strait to the point.
Great place full of great people doing great things.
I adopted my puppy from them during quarantine lockdown and they communicated well with me, talking me through the steps. They continued to do so with her spaying process a few months later.
Love Austin Pets Alive! I highly recommend them. We got our Great Pyrenees Dog there & hes a great dog. They were wonderful!!
This is a terrible establishment! I spoke to a terrible woman name Kate that refused to let me adopt a cat because my current cat likes to sit on my patio and told me that cats should never go outside. Their requirements are so ridiculous that most of there pets will end up dying before ever getting adopted
